Simultaneous removal of dye and heavy metal by banana peels derived hierarchically porous carbons

Deyou Yu,Lili Wang,Minghua Wu

The dye and heavy metal are two principal concomitant pollutants in industrial wastewaters, posing a serious threat to public health and the environment. Herein, we developed a novel strategy to convert banana peels into hierarchically porous carbon (BPCA) and porous carbon oxide (BPCAO) for the simultaneous removal of methylene blue (MB) and Co(II). The as-prepared carbons were systematically characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, FT-IR and XPS. Compared to BPCA, BPCAO showed a better adsorption performance due to its abundant surface oxygen-containing groups. In the mono-component systems, both MB and Co(II) adsorption onto BPCAO were well described by the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. The maximum adsorption capacities of MB and Co(II) were calculated to be 1303.54 and 122.39 mg/g at 298 K, respectively. In the binary system, the interaction between MB and Co(II) was determined and it depended on the initial concentration of Co(II). The adsorption mechanism of MB involved electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking and hydrogen-bonding while that of Co(II) was mainly ruled by the complexation and/or ion-exchange. This study indicated BPCAO could be a favorable biomass-derived adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of the dye and heavy metal.

Effect of phosphoric acid on the surface properties and Pb(II) adsorption mechanisms of hydrochars prepared from fresh banana peels

Nan Zhou,Honggang Chen,Qiuju Feng,Denghui Yao,Huanli Chen,Haiyan Wang,Zhi Zhou,Huiyong Li,Yun Tian,Xiangyang Lu

The acidic environment has been confirmed to have significant influence on the biochar products through hydrothermal carbonization . To investigate the effect of H 3 PO 4 on the surface properties and adsorption mechanisms of the biochar, fresh banana peels were used as feedstock and transformed into hydrochars under the catalysis of H 3 PO 4 with concentration ranges from 0% to 50%wt. The addition of H 3 PO 4 greatly impacted the physicochemical properties of the as-obtained hydrochars, such as carbonization degrees, pH values, amount of surface acidic functional groups and then further affected the adsorption mechanisms of lead ions on those hydrochars. Hydrochars catalyzed by H 3 PO 4 with higher concentration showed higher degree of carbonization, lower value of pH and fewer amount of acidic functional groups, while lower content of H 3 PO 4 could not completely catalyze the degradation reactions and resulted in larger quantity of intermolecular locked oxygen containing groups that could not be participated into the adsorption process . Among all six samples, hydrochar generated in 30%wt H 3 PO 4 exhibited the best adsorption property of 241 mg g −1 , possibly due to the largest concentration of the acidic functional groups on the surface rather than in the intermolecular structure of the carbon. It had been confirmed that the adsorption mechanisms were the combination of surface complexation, cationic exchange and part of precipitation. Hydrochars derived from fresh banana peel via hydrothermal carbonization catalyzed by phosphoric acid could be excellent adsorbents for lead removal in aqueous environments .

Eco-friendly flame retardant poly(lactic acid) composites based on banana peel powders and phytic acid: flame retardancy and thermal property

Kong Fan-bei,He Qi-lin,Peng Wei,Nie Shi-bin,Dong Xiang,Yang Ji-nian

A novel bio-flame retardant (PA-B) was prepared based on green materials--banana peel powder (BPP) and phytic acid (PA), then PA-B was used to prepare flame retardant poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites. The flame retardancy and thermal property of PLA composites were studied. It can be found that the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PLA composite with 15.0 wt% BPP is 22.1%, showing the heavy dripping during the combustion and failing to reach the vertical burning tests (UL-94) V-0 rating. However, when 15.0 wt% PA-B is added, the LOI is significantly increased to 37.5%, and the composite can reach UL-94 V-0 rating with the dripping problem is obviously reduced. Furthermore, PA-B is helpful to ameliorate the thermal property of PLA composites under the high temperature. The char residue of PLA/PA-B15 is 10.9 wt% at 550.0 °C, showing much higher value than that of PLA/B15 (3.3 wt%) and pure PLA (almost nothing left). From flammability analysis, PA-B not only is a crucial part of promoting the formation of char layer with high quality in the solid phase, which can play a “barrier effect” role to protect the underlying matrix and retard combustion process, but also has the flame retardant effect in the gaseous phase on the basis of PO· free radical. This work provides an efficient way to prepare bio-based flame retardant PLA composites, and also offers a new method to reuse agricultural wastes like banana peel. Banana peel derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon with enhanced electrocatalytic activity for complete oxidation of methanol under room temperature

Cuixing Xu,Gangyong Li,Yongyue Ning,Ming Zhou,Zongqian Hu

4-Amino-TEMPO (TEMPO-NH 2 ) is an organic oxidation catalyst capable of completely oxidizing methanol at room temperature. However, poor electron transfer between bare electrode and catalyst is not conducive to excellent catalytic performance. Herein, banana ( Musa nana ) peel, an abundant biomass waste, was employed as the precursor to prepare banana peel derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon (BPN-PC). The BPN-PC possesses high surface area (302.3 m 2  g −1 ), large pore volume (0.19 cm 3  g −1 ) and abundant defective sites, enabling BPN-PC attractive for the electrochemical applications. The BPN-PC modified glassy carbon electrode with nonimmobilized TEMPO-NH 2 (BPN-PC/GCE-TEMPO-NH 2 system) generates higher oxidation currents for methanol/formaldehyde/formate than those of GCE-TEMPO-NH 2 system. Especially, it exhibits wider linear ranges, higher sensitivities and lower detection limits for the methanol/formaldehyde/formate detection compared with GCE-TEMPO-NH 2 system. In addition, complete oxidation of methanol was further verified by gas mass spectrometer. Employing Prussian blue-multiwalled carbon nanotube composite as cathode, the open circuit voltage (0.53 V) and the maximum power density (106.3 μW cm −2 ) of the assembled BPN-PC-based mild methanol fuel cell are both higher than those of fuel cell without BPN-PC (0.31 V and 24.0 μW cm −2 ). These results suggest the great potential of cost-effective BPN-PC in electrochemical applications.

Biochar-based CuFe2O4 composite material to activate peroxyacetic acid for degradation of tetracycline

Xiaofeng Wu,Jianfeng Ma

Using banana peel as raw material, the composite material CuFe2O4@BC was synthesised and used it to activate peracetic acid (PAA) to remove tetracycline (TC) in water. The crystal phase, morphology, and chemical bonding of the composite were analysed by XRD, SEM, FTIR, XPS, and other characterisation techniques. In the degradation experiments, CuFe2O4@BC showed high catalytic activity and found that the best dosage ratio of CuFe2O4@BC and PAA is 300 mg/L: 3 mmol/L, and under this condition, the removal rate of TC in 60 min reached 85%. CuFe2O4@BC showed degradation effect in a wide pH range, and the catalytic activity was found to be the best under acidic conditions. At the same time, after five cycles of test, the composite still maintained more than 80% of TC removal rate. The free radical quenching experiments proved that the main active species in the reaction were •OH, CH3COO• and CH3COOO•.

Banana Peel-Derived Porous Carbon Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME) with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) for the Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Cheng Qian,Pei Zhang,Chao Nie,Hui Jiang,Linghu Cai,Xiangyu Chen,Minghua Liu

Green MgO-based banana peel activated carbon (MgO-BPAC) with distinctive pore structure features was synthesized with magnesium nitrate as the template and activator. A novel solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was prepared by fixing MgO-BPAC on the surface of a stainless-steel wire using silicone sealant. The fiber was coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for headspace-solid phase microextraction-GC-MS (HS-SPME-GC-MS) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The laboratory-constructed fiber showed good extraction efficiency for naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and anthracene and the corresponding analytical parameters were determined. The method provided low detection limits (0.86–2.12 ng/L) with satisfactory replicate extractions of one fiber (relative standard deviations ≤ 10.30%) and fiber to fiber reproducibility (relative standard deviations ≤ 13.92%). To validate the performance of the homemade fibers, this approach was used for the determination of the PAHs (0.05 μg/L) in spiked environmental water samples and good recoveries (92.67%–114.45%) were obtained. This study introduces a biocarbon material as a functional fiber coating component which adsorbs aromatic constituents through hydrophobic interactions.

The magnetic biochar derived from banana peels as a persulfate activator for organic contaminants degradation

Xing Rong,Meng Xie,Lingshuai Kong,Vinothkumar Natarajan,Long Ma,Jinhua Zhan

The magnetic biochar (γ-Fe 2 O 3 @BC) derived from banana peels was synthesized by a facile one-pot thermal process and used as the cost-effective and recyclable persulfate (PS) activator for organic contaminants degradation. The results showed that the encapsulated iron oxide nanoparticles not only introduced the magnetism into biochar for easy separation, but also influenced the catalytic ability for PS activation . The γ-Fe 2 O 3 @BC was found to be highly effective for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation without pH adjustment. A complete removal of BPA was obtained within 20 min with an observed rate constant (k obs ) of 0.1849 min −1 , which was almost two times as large as that (0.0956 min −1 ) of pure biochar. Further, it exhibited high mineralization efficiency for the degradation of various organic contaminants. The high catalytic activity could be attributed to large BET surface area, dispersed iron species, abundant oxygen functional groups and rich doped nitrogen. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies confirmed that OH , SO 4 − and O 2 − were all involved in the radical oxidation process which was responsible for BPA degradation. A mechanism of PS activation by the γ-Fe 2 O 3 @BC catalyst was proposed based on the synergistic effect of biochar and iron.

Activated porous carbon materials with ultrahigh specific surface area derived from banana peels for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries

Yan Yinglin,Wei Yiqi,Li Qiaole,Shi Mangmang,Zhao Chao,Chen Liping,Fan Chaojiang,Yang Rong,Xu Yunhua

A series of banana peels derived porous carbon (BPPC) materials were fabricated by pyrolysis carbonization with different numbers of KOH activation. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller tests indicated the number of activation effectively improves the specific surface area and pore volume of the BPPC. Amongst, the BPPC-2 (activated twice) possesses ultrahigh specific surface area (2044.57 m 2  g −1 ) and large pore volume (2.40 cm 3  g −1 ) on account of the improved hierarchical porous microstructure. After S loading process, the resultant C/S composites were introduced as cathode material in Li–S batteries. The S/BPPC-2 composite cathode exhibited a higher initial specific capacity (1481.54 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C) and a better reversible capacity (351 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 1 C) than those of others. It also exhibited excellent high rate performance even at 5 C. The enhanced electrochemical performances were ascribed to the improved specific surface area and larger pore volume of the BPPC-2, which effectively facilitated the intimate contact between sulfur and the conductive matrix, accommodating severe volume change. Besides, the micro/mesopores provided high adsorption power to inhibit the dissolution of polysulfides. This research suggested that the activation number played a key role in improving the electrochemical performance of composite cathode in Li–S batteries.

Chemical Recycling of Catalytic Glycolysis of Polyethylene Terephthalate with Potassium-Rich Biomass

Zhe Bai,Zhixian Bao,Haoquan Hu

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products are ubiquitous in daily life, offering convenience but posing significant environmental challenges due to their persistence and the difficulty of recycling them. Improper disposal of waste PET contributes to severe pollution and resource loss. Chemical degradation has emerged as one of the most effective methods for recovering and reusing waste PET. This article introduces a catalytic glycolysis strategy for efficient and environmentally sustainable PET recycling using potassium-rich biomass, specifically banana peels. The study demonstrated that K2O and K2CO3, derived from calcined banana peels, significantly catalyze the glycolysis of PET. Under optimal conditions, complete degradation of PET was achieved within 1.5 h at 180 °C, without additional chemical reagents. Product distribution confirmed that high-purity bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate could be obtained. The interaction between K2CO3and ethylene glycol plays a critical role in determining the competition between glycolysis and alkaline hydrolysis. Furthermore, Density Functional Theory calculations provided valuable insights into the transesterification process during glycolysis. The reaction system also demonstrated excellent compatibility with colored PET products. This study successfully realized the simultaneous recycling of post-consumer PET and banana peels, offering a novel and sustainable approach to waste valorization.

Solid phase extraction of carbamate pesticides with banana peel derived hierarchical porous carbon prior to high performance liquid chromatography

Menghua Li,Caina Jiao,Xiumin Yang,Chun Wang,Qiuhua Wu,Zhi Wang

In this work, biomass derived hierarchical porous carbon (BHPC) was prepared via a facile, cost-effective and green route by carbonizing banana peel waste. Textural characterization shows that the material possesses hierarchical pores and a large Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of 561.8 m2 g−1. The BHPC was used as a solid phase extraction sorbent for the enrichment of carbamate pesticides from cucumber and watermelon samples coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector. Under the optimal conditions, good linearity was obtained in the concentration range of 0.2–80.0 ng g−1 for propoxur and bassa, and 0.5–80 ng g−1 for isoprocarb, with a correlation coefficient (r) larger than 0.9969. The limits of detection of the method were in the range of 0.05–0.20 ng g−1. The results show that BHPC has great potential to be applied for the isolation and preconcentration of organic analytes from complex matrices.

Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon from Biomass with Efficient Toluene Adsorption and Superior Catalytic Performance

Jing Zhang,Jianwu Zou,Xiang Xu,Zhuang Li,Zheng Zeng,Liqing Li

The chemical composition and surface groups of the carbon support affect the adsorption capacity of toluene. To investigate the effect of catalyst substrate on the catalytic performance, two different plant biomasses, banana peel and sugarcane peel, were used as carbon precursors to prepare porous carbon catalyst supports (Cba, Csu, respectively) by a chemical activation method. After decorating PtCo3nanoparticles onto both carbon supports (Cba, Csu), the PtCo3-su catalyst demonstrated better catalytic performance for toluene oxidation (T100= 237 °C) at a high space velocity of 12,000 h−1. The Csu support possessed a stronger adsorption capacity of toluene (542 mg g−1), resulting from the synergistic effect of micropore volume and nitrogen-containing functional groups, which led to the PtCo3-su catalyst exhibiting a better catalytic performance. Moreover, the PtCo3-su catalyst also showed excellent stability, good water resistance properties, and high recyclability, which can be used as a promising candidate for practical toluene catalytic combustion.Keywords:PtCo3bimetal;carbon support;toluene oxidation;N-doped;toluene adsorption

Simultaneous removal of As(V) and Pb(II) using highly-efficient modified dehydrated biochar made from banana peel via hydrothermal synthesis

Varney Edwin Johnson,Qi Liao,Bob Wisdom Jallawide,Richmond Anaman,Charles Amanze,Peicheng Huang,Wei Cao,Chunlian Ding,Yan Shi

Efficient removal of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) from industrial wastewater has long been a critical environmental issue due to their serious risk to human health. Therefore, in this work, a modified banana peel biochar (MBPB) was prepared by mixing calcium nitrate , diammonium hydrogen phosphate , sulfuric acid, ferric nitrate with dehydrated banana peel biochar as adsorbent for As(V) and Pb(II) removal in wastewater, and their absorption mechanism was investigated. SEM-EDS, TEM, FTIR , XRD , XPS , BET, kinetic, and isothermal characteristics of MBPB and pristine banana peel biochar (PBPB) were conducted. The behavior of both metal ions on MBPB and PBPB was well explained by the pseudo-second-order kinetic with Langmuir and Freundlich models. We found that the two biochar’s behaviors were mixture processes of monolayer and multilayer adsorption , achieving maximum capacities as determined by the Langmuir model of 39.5 mg g −1 (MBPB-As), 33.2 mg g −1 (MBPB-Pb), 30.8 mg g −1 (PBPB-Pb), and 23.5 mg g −1 (PBPB-As), with maximum efficiencies of 98.7% (MBPB-As) and 90.3% (MBPB-Pb) under optimum conditions. Thermodynamic tests showed that As(V) and Pb(II) removal on MBPB was a spontaneous and endothermic physisorption process. MBPB showed great reusability in As(V) and Pb(II) removal, with removal rates as high as 71.4% and 66.5% after five cycles, respectively. Selective adsorption of As(V) and Pb(II) was also investigated on MBPB, and the removal rate was still high in the mixture of heavy metals. These findings provide a feasible method for the environmental-benign utilization of banana peel as a low-priced adsorbent in wastewater treatment .
