Dual-mode driven Marangoni actuator with spontaneity and controllability as a soft robot

Liyang Jing,Yiheng Song,Shuyan He,Xinming Fu,Zhengliang Du,Xianze Yin

The investigation of Marangoni effect-driven actuators holds significant importance due to their wide-ranging applications in smart devices and biomedical fields. However, traditional Marangoni hydrogel actuators often lack spontaneity and are difficult to control. In this study, we designed and prepared a dual-mode driven Marangoni hydrogel actuator (DDMA) which combines the spontaneity of solvent exchange-based hydrogel actuators with the controllability of photothermal-based ones. DDMA not only exhibits excellent ethanol loading capacity but also demonstrates both sustained motion for approximately 21 minutes and rapid motion. Furthermore, controlled motion can be achieved under infrared light, by adjusting the illumination point, the hydrogel can navigate through complex N-shaped mazes and achieve turning angles exceeding 180°. This spontaneously controllable potential of hydrogel motion holds great promise in the field of intelligent transportation and soft robotics technology.

Light Fueled Manipulation of Bubble Motion Against Buoyancy via Photosensitive Substrate

Haonan Li,Yijing Yang,Xun Zhu,Hong Wang,Dingding Ye,Yang Yang,Qiang Liao,Rong Chen

Flexibly and precisely controlling bubbles is of paramount significance for biological and chemical analysis, reaction engineering, etc. However, the buoyancy force acting on bubbles is significant, making it difficult to precisely manipulate bubbles. Particularly, controlling the anti-buoyancy motion of bubbles remains a fundamental challenge. Herein, a versatile light strategy for manipulating the anti-buoyancy motion of bubbles via a photosensitive substrate is developed. Upon focused laser beam irradiation, an intense Marangoni effect associated with non-uniform temperature distribution is induced underneath the bubble. The created excess Laplace pressure drives the bubble to move against the buoyancy force downward to the focused-laser-acted region, manifesting an excellent phototaxis motion. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the Marangoni effect is responsible for actuating the anti-buoyancy motion of a bubble. With this light strategy, the bubble collection, transportation, and on-demand release can be flexibly implemented. Moreover, the phototaxis motion of bubbles inspires a manipulation protocol via the integration of 3D-structured design of photosensitive substrate. This light strategy for manipulating bubbles not only possesses sufficiently high accuracy and quick response, but also circumvents the limitation of the liquid volatility and multi-dimensional motion, which provides new ideas for rational control of bubble behaviors.

Light-Operated Dual-Mode Propulsion at the Liquid/Air Interface Using Flexible, Superhydrophobic, and Thermally Stable Photothermal Paper

Ri-Long Yang,Ying-Jie Zhu,Dong-Dong Qin,Zhi-Chao Xiong

The direct transformation of external energy into mechanical work by the self-propelled motor inspires and promotes the development of miniaturized machines. Several strategies have been utilized to realize the self-driven motion, but in some cases multiple power sources are needed, and this would complicate the operation in diverse environments. In this regard, the dual-mode self-propelled system based on a single power source is highly desirable. In this work, single-light-actuated dual-mode propulsion at the liquid/air interface is realized by using flexible, superhydrophobic, and thermostable photothermal paper made from flexible ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires, titanium sesquioxide (Ti2O3) particles, and poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating. The superhydrophobic surface enables the thermostable photothermal paper to float on the water surface spontaneously and significantly reduces the drag force. In the usual situation, the heat power produced by the photothermal effect is utilized to trigger the Marangoni propulsion. While the Marangoni effect is quenched in water containing the surfactant, the propulsion mode can be directly switched into the vapor-enabled propulsion mode by simply increasing the light power density. Particularly, the light-driven motion in a linear, curvilinear, or rotational manner can be realized by designing the self-propelled machines with appropriate shapes by using the processable photothermal paper. It is expected that the as-prepared dual-mode self-propelled, flexible, superhydrophobic, and thermostable photothermal paper-based devices have promising applications in various fields such as microrobots, biomedicine, and environmental monitoring.

Motion-based glucose sensing based on a fish-like enzymeless motor

Mingtong Li,Hui Zhang,Mei Liu,Bin Dong

In this paper, we report a fish-like enzymeless motor, which consists of a phenylboronic acid modified poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel and a surfactant, i.e. sodium dodecyl sulfate. The motor is capable of moving autonomously upon exposure to the glucose molecule. This phenomenon originates from the complexation between glucose and phenylboronic acid, which leads to the swelling of the hydrogel and the release of the surfactant, thus propelling the whole structure based on the Marangoni effect. Interestingly, the motor's moving velocity is directly proportional to the glucose concentration. Through the introduction of a magnetically responsive material, the motion direction of the motor can be manipulated. More interestingly, the combination of the glucose-dependent motion and magnetically steerable motion allows us to directly visualize the glucose concentration in human serum or urine. We thus believe that the motor reported in the current study may have potential for application in the field of glucose sensing for the detection and monitoring of diabetes.

Controlled Movement of a Smart Miniature Submarine at Various Interfaces

Ying Chu,Liming Qin,Liang Zhen,Qinmin Pan

Smart miniaturized aquatic devices have many important applications, but their locomotion at different interfaces remains a challenge. Here, we report a smart miniaturized submarine moving at various air/liquid or oil/water interfaces. The microsubmarine is fabricated by a CO2-responsive superhydrophobic copper mesh and is driven by the Marangoni effect. The microsubmarine can not only transfer among different interfaces reversibly but also move horizontally at the interfaces freely. The unique locomotion of the device is attributed to a CO2-triggered switch between superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Moreover, the microsubmarine exhibits good stability and excellent oil repellence at the oil/water interface. Our study provides a strategy for fabricating smart aquatic devices that have potential applications in environment monitoring, water purification, channel-free microfluidics, and so on.

A Light-Powered Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on the Photothermal Marangoni Effect

Chongxian Liu,Dongjie Jiang,Guiqiang Zhu,Zengzhao Li,Xiaojie Zhang,Pan Tian,Dan Wang,Engui Wang,Han Ouyang,Meng Xiao,Zhou Li

The photothermal Marangoni effect enables direct light-to-work conversion, which is significant for realizing the self-propulsion of objects in a noncontact, controllable, and continuous manner. Many promising applications have been demonstrated in micro- and nanomachines, light-driven actuators, cargo transport, and gear transmission. Currently, the related studies about photothermal Marangoni effect-induced self-propulsion, especially rotational motions, remain focused on developing the novel photothermal materials, the structural designs, and the controllable self-propulsion modes. However, extending the related research from the laboratory practice to practical application remains a challenge. Herein, we combined the photothermal Marangoni effect-induced self-propulsion with the triboelectric nanogenerator technology for sunlight intensity determination. Photothermal black silicon, superhydrophobic copper foam with drag-reducing property, and triboelectric polytetrafluoroethylene film were integrated to fabricate a triboelectric nanogenerator. The photothermal-Marangoni-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (PMD-TENG) utilizes the photothermal Marangoni effect-induced self-propulsion to realize the relative motion between the triboelectric layer and the electrode, converting light into electrical signals, with a peak value of 2.35 V. The period of the output electrical signal has an excellent linear relationship with the light intensity. The accessible electrical signal generation strategy proposed here provides a new application for the photothermal Marangoni effect, which could further inspire the practical applications of the self-powered system based on the photothermal Marangoni effect, such as intelligent farming.

Effect of ultrasonication on rising characteristics of a single gas bubble

Yannan Liang,Hainan Wang,Ruoqian Zhou,Danlong Li,Haijun Zhang

In recent years, ultrasonication has been used to enhance flotation process. Gas bubble is the unique carrier during mineral flotation, and thus its characteristics play an important role. However, the bubble rising characteristics under ultrasound action are not clear. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the effect of ultrasonication on bubble rising behaviors in deionized water and MIBC (Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol) solution. A laboratory visualization system of bubble motion with ultrasonication was designed based on the high-speed dynamic video technology to record the bubble rising process and analyze bubble rising characteristics. Bubble aspect ratio was found to increase with the surfactant concentration increasing, but the rising velocity was in opposite state. In each solution, a significantly higher bubble sphericity was observed with ultrasonication than that without ultrasonication, conversely, the bubble rising velocity was smaller under the action of ultrasonication. A roughly negative linear relationship was found between the bubble shape and rising velocity, and the ultrasonication diminished this relationship. Marangoni effect was considered as the cause of MIBC affecting the bubble motion, and possible explanations of ultrasonication affecting the bubble motion were given from the perspective of bubble surface wave, cavitation bubble oscillation and sound radiation force.

Kinetic Insights into Marangoni Effect-Assisted Preparation of Ultrathin Hydrogel Films

Ye Tian,Xiaoying Gao,Wei Hong,Miao Du,Pengju Pan,Jing Zhi Sun,Zi Liang Wu,Qiang Zheng

In a previous work (ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces2017, 9, 34349–34355), a facile approach was reported to prepare thin hydrogel films based on the Marangoni effect. After dripping onto a water surface, a drop of ethanol solution of poly(stearyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) [P(SA-co-AAc)] spread quickly to form a thin film. The solvent exchange from ethanol to water led to the gelation of polymer solution which turned into a hydrogel film. Here, we investigate the scenario and seek for the governing kinetics of the Marangoni effect-assisted preparation of hydrogel films. By incorporating aggregation-induced emission fluorogens into the P(SA-co-AAc) solution, so that fluorescence appears at the gel state, we found that the spreading usually completed before the full gelation of the entire film. The spreading and formation of the gel films were influenced by the molar fraction of SA, f, and the polymer concentration of ethanol solution, CP. The spreading was blocked when CP was too high, whereas the film was fragmented into small pieces when CP was too low. At an intermediate CP, uniform hydrogel films were obtained. Steady spreading at a constant speed was observed during the processes which yielded uniform hydrogel films. Both CP and f influenced the spreading process by tuning the surface tension of the ethanol solution and the viscoelasticity of the gelated film, as suggested by our theoretical model. This work provided kinetic insights into the Marangoni phenomena of viscous polymer solutions. The strategy and principle should be applicable to other systems on preparing thin supramolecular gel films with versatile functions.

Enhanced Marangoni Flow to Fabricate Uniform and Porous SiO2 Films: Toward Superior High Transparency, Antifogging, and Self- Cleaning Properties

Sijun Li,Donghui Kou,Aini Wu,Lei Gao,Shufen Zhang,Wei Ma

Fogging on transparent substrate greatly impacts transmittance, causing inconvenience and potential hazards. Increasing surface roughness to enhance hydrophilicity often reduces transmittance. Here, by enhancing the Marangoni flow to inhibit the coffee-ring effect during SiO 2 droplet drying, we propose for the first time to manufacture superhydrophilic and high-transmittance coatings with porous structures on various substrates, including glass and resin. This approach relies on a simple, potentially large-scale ultrasonic spray method to enhance the Marangoni flow of SiO 2 dispersion with different particle sizes by adding multiple surfactants to reduce the surface tension of the dispersion. The water contact angle of the SiO 2 film decreases to below 5° within 0.5 s, imparting anti-fogging properties to the substrate. The film exhibits a transmittance of 93.1% at 580 nm, surpassing the inherent 90.8% transmittance of the bare glass. Notably, the film shows remarkable self-cleaning properties due to potent hydration from eco-friendly SiO 2 nanoparticles and the porous structure. Owing to the hydrogen bonding between tightly packed small-sized SiO 2 particles as well as between the particles and substrate, the surface morphology of the film on glass remains intact even after washing, and soaking. The porous SiO 2 film, with a contact angle dropping to below 5° within 0.5 s, maintains its superhydrophilicity even after being exposed to high temperatures, UV irradiation, and humidity conditions. The simple production process of the porous SiO 2 films offers a promising method for preparing high-transmittance anti-fogging films with significant industrial potential.

Self-Swimming Droplets Driven by the Synergistic Effects of the Fast Interfacial Polymerization and Hydrolysis Reactions

Xiaodong Lian,Jingwen Luo,Yizhou Ding,Bin Yuan,Yapei Wang

Self-swimming droplets, as an intriguing phenomenon in the microscopic realm, have traditionally been achieved by harnessing the interfacial properties of small-molecule emulsifiers. Herein, we successfully prepared self-swimming droplets by employing polymers. Leveraging the synergistic effects of fast interfacial polymerization and hydrolysis reactions, a polymer layer is rapidly formed at the oil–water interface, followed by the generation of weakly amphiphilic substances that establish an interfacial tension gradient. Thus, strong Marangoni circulation flows were induced to propel the droplets to move spontaneously. The interfacial behavior of the self-swimming droplets was investigated, revealing regular oscillations and the spontaneous formation of microdroplets on the larger droplet surface. Comparative experiments confirmed the synergistic effects of the two types of reactions in forming self-swimming droplets, as the absence of either reaction hindered autonomous movement. The movement time reaches 758 s, and the maximum speed of droplet movement reaches 5.08 mm/s. This work not only enriches the variety of self-swimming droplets but also provides theoretical guidance for designing and preparing innovative self-swimming systems.

Areal Density Control of Liquid-Supported Carbon Nanotube Thin Films

Zhengqi Lao,Xiu Liu,Fuzhen Li,Yaoguang Chen,Kang Yang,Ling Chen,Li Jiang,Kancheng Mai,Zishou Zhang

Carbon nanotube (CNT) films have extensive applications due to their excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. A grand challenge is controlling areal density of CNT films to accommodate various applications. Here, a method based on the Marangoni effect is used to fabricate liquid-supported CNT films with tunable areal density, scalable area, and transferability to arbitrary substrates. By adjusting the viscosity and surface tension of the base liquid media, the Marangoni flow area of surfactant-assisted single-walled CNT (SWCNT) dispersion on the surface of base media was controllable and sparse or dense SWCNT films can be easily obtained. The thickness of the films is controlled by changing the concentration of the SWCNT dispersion. These SWCNT-based transparent-conductive films have widely controllable transmittance and conductivity and exhibit great photoelectric properties (T ∼ 82.4%, Rs ∼ 407 Ω/sq).

Unraveling programmable motion of MXene/polyurethane motor driven by the near-infrared light

Yu Xu,Haoyu Qi,Mingming Sun,Zongxu Liu,Qing Liu,Kang Li,Wei Guo

While light-driven motors that can exhibit characteristic response have attracted significant research attention, they generally lack a stable and editable structure for exploration the versatile motions and their practical applications. Herein, a MXene/Polyurethane (PU) motor with robust “brick-and-mortar” structure was configured as the platform to study the light-driven self-propelled behaviors and mechanisms. Our experimental and theoretical results demonstrated that the external near-infrared laser (NIR) light stimulus triggers the photothermal Marangoni effect to create the local difference in surface tension, which serves as the driving force to overcome the flow resistance. The MXene/PU motor floating on the water phase exhibited programmable motion under the irradiation of NIR light, especially, complex motions such as directed motion, clockwise and counterclockwise rotations, and intermittent motion (alteration between resting and moving states). More interestingly, the MXene/PU motor can not only move along any complicated routes such as maze but also execute the stir task at designated place on the water surface. We believe that the fabricated MXene/PU motor has potential to fundamentally solve challenges in cargo transport and beyond, and the concept of remote motion-control of micro-objects by external stimulus can inspire further explorations of design of self-propelled motors and systems.
