Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) has been proposed as a potential solution to supply aquatic food in an environmentally friendly way. However, little is known regarding the impacts of IMTA on the growth rates and food quality of both animals and plants, as well as the seasonal effects. In this study, we conducted field mesocosm experiments using monoculture and coculture systems with the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and the macroalga Ulva linza for four weeks in different seasons (autumn, spring and summer) to address the research gap. To evaluate the environmental pollution caused by shrimp culture, there was no water exchange for culture systems including shrimps. Compared to monoculture of L. vannamei , coculture with U. linza significantly reduced dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, 98.5–99.0%) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP, 98.2–98.8%) but enhanced dissolved oxygen (DO, 56.2–68.7%) and pH (10.7–18.6%) by the end of culture. Compared to monoculture, coculture stimulated the growth rates of L. vannamei by 38.1–58.8% and U. linza by 241.9–290.4% in all seasons, and increased the lipid content of L. vannamei by 24.2% in autumn and by 37.9% in summer and the contents of protein and ash of U. linza by 23.8–29.0% and by 27.6–68.6%, respectively, in all seasons. Coculture enhanced the content of most amino acids in U. linza and the content of total fatty acids (FA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids in L. vannamei in all seasons in comparison with monoculture. In addition, coculture lifted swelling capacity by 28.9–40.5%, water holding capacity by 39.8–43.3% and oil holding capacity by 31.4–32.4% for U. linza in autumn and summer. Apart from relieving eutrophication , deoxygenation and acidification, IMTA increased growth rates of both shrimp and Ulva and improved functional properties of U. linza , suggesting a green and productive aquaculture mode.

Dysregulation of cholesterol homeostasis is a major risk factor of atherosclerosis, which can lead to serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke. Liver X receptor (LXR) α and β are transcription factors belonging to the nuclear receptor superfamily, which play important roles in cholesterol homeostasis. Selectively activating LXRβ provides a promising strategy for the treatment of atherosclerosis. Here, we employed atherosclerotic apoE-knockout mice to evaluate the effects of saringosterol, a phytosterol with potent and selective action for LXRβ, which we identified previously in edible marine seaweedSargassum fusiforme. We found that saringosterol treatment reduced the atherosclerotic plaque burden without having undesirable adverse hepatic effects in apoE-deficient mice fed an atherogenic diet. Meanwhile, reduced serum levels of cholesterol, accompanied by altered expression of LXR-regulated genes involved in cholesterol absorption, transport, efflux, excretion, and elimination, were observed in apoE-knockout mice after saringosterol treatment. Together, our study not only establishes saringosterol as an effective cholesterol-lowering and anti-atherogenic phytosterol but also provides insights into the underlying mechanism. Keywords:saringosterol;liver X receptor;cholesterol metabolism;atherosclerosis;Sargassum fusiforme

Recently, microplastics (MPs) have attracted extensive attention to their wide distribution and potential toxicity in ecosystems. However, there was a lack of research focused on MPs in seaweed bed ecosystems. This study investigated the distribution and toxicity of MPs in macrobenthos in Sargassum ecosystem. According to the in-situ investigation results, the abundance of MPs in the sediment was 0.9–2.3 items/g, the indoor microcosmic experiment was constructed. After exposure to MPs (0, 2, and 20 items/g) for 30 days, the abundance of MPs in macrobenthos exhibits a concentration-dependent increase. However, there was no significant bioaccumulation of MPs at the trophic level . The indoor toxicity test revealed that MPs induced oxidative stress and altered intestinal microflora composition in macrobenthos, even at actual environmental concentrations (2 items/g). It may result in a perturbation of the organism's homeostatic equilibrium. High-concentration (20 items/g) MPs had a greater impact on alkaline phosphatase (AKP) in Mollusks . The increase in AKP activity could be indicative of an adaptive mechanism in some macrobenthos while the decline in AKP activity might signal a decrease in their survival. These results elucidated the fate of MPs in ecosystem and the ecological risks of MPs to large benthic animals on model environmental conditions.

Anode materials , as the core component of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), have huge impacts on power generation performance and overall cost. Stainless-steel sponge (SS) can be a promising material for MFC anodes, due to its open continuous three-dimensional structure, high conductivity and low cost. However, poor biocompatibility limits its application. In this paper, a polypyrrole/sargassum activated carbon modified SS anode (Ppy/SAC/SS) is developed by electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole on the SS with the SAC as a dopant . The maximum power density achieved with the Ppy/SAC/SS anode is 45.2 W/m 3 , which is increased by 2 orders of magnitude and 2.9 times compared with an unmodified SS anode and a solely Ppy modified SS anode (Ppy/SS), respectively. In addition, the Ppy/SAC layer effectively eliminates electrochemical corrosion of the SS substrate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that Ppy/SAC modification decreases electron transfer resistance between the bacteria and the electrode. Furthermore, in vivo fluorescence imaging indicates that a more uniform biofilm is formed on the Ppy/SAC/SS compared to the unmodified SS and Ppy/SS. Due to the low cost of the materials, easy fabrication process and relatively high performance, our developed Ppy/SAC/SS can be a cost efficient anode material for MFCs in practical applications.

Diabetes is a complicated endocrine and metabolic disorder, which has become an epidemic health issue worldwide. Fucoidan is extensively distributed in the brown algae and several marine invertebrates exhibiting diverse biological activities. In the present study, the physicochemical property of Sargassum fusiforme fucoidan (SFF) and its effects on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice and gut microbiota were investigated. Diabetes mice not only showed abnormal blood glucose, but also accompanied by multiple symptoms, such as gradual emaciation, decreased body weight, increased food and water intake. Compared with diabetic mice after 6-week treatment, administration of SFF significantly decreased the fasting blood glucose, diet and water intake. Furthermore, SFF attenuated the pathological change in the heart and liver, improved the liver function, and suppressed oxidative stress in STZ-induced diabetic mice. Simultaneously, SFF significantly altered the gut microbiota in the faeces of diabetic mice, decreased the relative abundances of the diabetes-related intestinal bacteria, which is a potential mechanism for relieving the symptoms of diabetes. Therefore, SFF might be considered as one of the promising complementary and alternative medicines for the management of diabetes mellitus in future.

Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) is an immunosuppressive virus which has caused heavy losses to the poultry breeding industry. Currently, there is no effective medicine to treat this virus. In our previous experiments, the low-molecular-weightSargassum fusiformepolysaccharide (SFP) was proven to possess antiviral activity against ALV-J, but its function was limited to the virus adsorption stage. In order to improve the antiviral activity of the SFP, in this study, three new SFP long-chain alkyl group nanomicelles (SFP-C12M, SFP-C14M and SFP-C16M) were prepared. The nanomicelles were characterized according to their physical and chemical properties. The nanomicelles were characterized by particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity index, critical micelle concentration and morphology. The results showed the particle sizes of the three nanomicelles were all approximately 200 nm and SFP-C14M and SFP-C16M were more stable than SFP-C12M. The newly prepared nanomicelles exhibited a better anti-ALV-J activity than the SFP, with SFP-C16M exhibiting the best antiviral effects in both the virus adsorption stage and the replication stage. The results of the giant unilamellar vesicle exposure experiment demonstrated that the new virucidal effect of the nanomicelles might be caused by damage to the phospholipid membrane of ALV-J. This study provides a potential idea for ALV-J prevention and development of other antiviral drugs. Keywords:Sargassum fusiforme;polysaccharide;long-chain alkyl group;antiviral activity;ALV-J

s Food allergy (FA) has emerged as a pivotal concern for food safety and public health worldwide. Among marine-derived nutrients, fucoidans have shown promising anti FA potential, yet the absence of studies on well-defined fucoidan structures has made it quite challenging to establish a clear relationship between their structure and anti-allergic activity. Our previous studies demonstrated that crude fucoidan from Sargassum graminifolium substantially ameliorated FA symptoms and further isolation yielded a S. graminifolium fucoidan SGF-2. Nevertheless, its structural characteristics and anti FA properties remain elusive. In this study, we elucidated the major backbone linkages of SGF-2 via methylation analysis combined with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and evaluated its anti FA potential in an ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mouse model. The results showed that SGF-2 intervention effectively mitigated FA symptoms by markedly reducing OVA-specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and related cytokines levels, decreasing the incidence of diarrhea and the spleen index, and suppressing intestinal inflammation. 16S_rRNA sequencing analysis demonstrated that SGF-2 interventions could effectively counteract gut microbiota disruption induced by FA by partially enhancing microbial community diversity, augmenting the relative abundances of probiotics that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and suppressing the relative abundances of harmful bacteria. Furthermore, the levels of SCFAs in feces increased following interventions with SGF-2. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that SGF-2 reversed the imbalance of Th1/Th2 polarization, particularly by inhibiting the Th2-type immune response and promoting the differentiation of Regulatory T cells (Tregs). These findings suggest that fucoidan derived from S. graminifolium holds great promise for the development of functional foods.

Type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) is a complicated metabolic disorder that is now considered as a major global public health problem. Fucoidan exhibits diverse biological activities, especially prevention of metabolic diseases. In this regard, we herein aimed to reveal the beneficial effect of Sargassum fusiforme fucoidan (SFF) on high-fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ) induced T2DM mice. We noted that on the one hand, SFF significantly decreased fasting blood glucose, diet and water intake, and hyperlipidemia, while on the other hand, it improved glucose tolerance. Furthermore, SFF reduced epididymal fat deposition, attenuated the pathological changes in heart and liver tissues, and decreased oxidative stress in diabetic mice. To explore the underlying mechanisms of these ameliorative effects, the gut microbiota was analyzed. Notably, SFF highly enriched benign microbes including Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium and Blautia, as well as increased levels of (R)-carnitine and choline in the colon of diabetic mice. This may be a potential mechanism for alleviating T2DM, thus implying the benefits of SFF as an adjuvant agent for T2DM treatment. Taken together, this study demonstrated a promising application of fucoidan as one of the adjuvant agents for the management of T2DM in the future.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is considered a rapidly growing chronic disease that threatens human health worldwide. Extracts of various seaweeds have been shown to have anti-diabetic activity. Sargarsum fusiforme, an edible brown seaweed, has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-obesity activities. In this study, we investigated the beneficial effect of an ethanol extract of S. fusiforme (EE) on type 2 diabetes in mice induced with high-fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ). Administering EE to the diabetic mice significantly reduced food intake, water intake and fasting blood glucose (FBG), while improving glucose tolerance, lipid profile and ameliorating hepatic oxidative stress. Furthermore, these animals also exhibited significantly diminished epididymal fat deposition, as well as less pathological changes in the heart and liver tissues, while displaying some highly enriched benign gut bacteria (e.g., Intestinimonas , Oscillibacter , Lachnoclostridium, unidentified_Lachnospiraceae , Roseburia and Anaerotruncus ) and a lower abundance of bacteria associated with diabetes or other metabolic diseases (e.g., Enterorhabdus and Romboutsia ). Metabolomic analysis revealed reduced levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), such as l -valine and l -isoleucine, aromatic amino acids (AAA), such as l -tyrosine and l -phenylalanine, and increased levels of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (4-HPA) in the gut content, suggesting that EE may impact T2DM through modulation of these compounds in the gut of the animals. Taken together, the results implied that S. fusiforme may contain valuable active components other than polysaccharides that have potential benefit in alleviating T2DM.
