Aedes albopictus (Skuse) is a vector of several arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya, West Nile, and Zika viruses. At present, the use of synthetic insecticides is the main vector control strategy. However, the widespread and long-term use of insecticides has aroused several problems, including insecticide resistance, environmental pollution, and non-target species effects, thereby encouraging researchers to search for new alternatives derived from natural products. In recent decades, essential oils (EOs) as natural alternatives to control mosquitoes have received increasing attention. In the initial larvicidal activity screen, two Rutaceae plants (Citrus aurantium and Citrus paradisi) EOs were selected and evaluated for killing Ae. albopictus larvae. The LC50 values of C. aurantium and C. paradisi EOs against Ae. albopictus were 91.7 and 100.9 ppm, respectively. The main components of C. aurantium EO include diethyl o-phthalate (37.32%), limonene (10.04%), and methyl dihydrojasmonate (6.48%). The main components of C. paradisi EO include limonene (60.51%), diethyl o-phthalate (11.75%), linalool (7.90%), and styralyl acetate (6.28%). Among these main components of the two EOs, limonene showed potent larvicidal activity, with the LC50 value of 39.7 ppm. The nanoemulsions of limonene were prepared and characterized. The duration of larvicidal activity was greater in the limonene nanoemulsions than when limonene was applied in solvent. This study demonstrates that EOs of plants in family Rutaceae are a potential resource to develop new larvicides, and nanoemulsification is an effective method for improving the physicochemical properties and efficacy of natural products as larvicides.

Composite bio–based multifunctional air filtration is a great challenge and development trend for personal protection. This work was inspired by nature mutualism to produce bio–based and essential oil loaded nanofibrous membrane with multiple functions of high–performance, antibacterial, and mosquito–repellent. The cinnamaldehyde (CMA) and poly(hexamethylene biguanide) (PHMB) were introduced into the cellulose acetate (CA) polymer system to achieve functionalization, and then the CA/CMA/PHMB ultrafine bimodal nanofibrous membrane was prepared through one–step electrospinning. Compared to eugenol, the CMA contributed to the refinement of fiber and minimized the reduction of mechanical properties, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity. On the other hand, the PHMB enhanced jet splitting and synergistically improved antibacterial ability with CMA. The filtration efficiency for PM 0.3 , the pressure drop, and the quality factor were 99.78%, 59.5 Pa, and 0.1028 Pa −1 , respectively. The bacteriostatic rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and the mosquito–repellent rate were 99.65%, 99.99%, and 92.7%, respectively. Lastly, the batch preparation of this solution was explored, which contributed to commercialization. This work provides a novel and simple approach to efficiently fabricate multifunctional high–performance air filter, which will promote the development of bio–based and sustainable air filter.

We studied the knockdown activity and lethal toxicity of 6 essential oil compounds—methyl salicylate, linalool, 2-phenethyl alcohol, eugenol, β-citronellol, and trans-cinnamaldehyde—as fumigants against adult female Culex pipiens pallens in the laboratory. Of the 6 products tested, trans-cinnamaldehyde was the most toxic (LC50 = 0.26 µl/l air, 24 h) with a slow knockdown time (KT95 = 176.5 min at 0.5 µl/l air). Methyl salicylate displayed a lower toxicity (LC50 = 1.17 µl/l air, 24 h) but the fastest knockdown activity (KT95 = 16.8 min) at the sublethal concentration 0.5 µl/l air. Furthermore, the binary mixture of methyl salicylate and trans-cinnamaldehyde exhibited a combined effect of fast knockdown activity and high toxicity against Cx. p. pallens adults, showing potential for development as natural fumigants for mosquito control.

To explore novel terpenoid repellents, 22 candidate terpenoid derivatives were synthesized and tested for their electroantennogram (EAG) responses and repellent activities against Aedes albopictus. The results from the EAG experiments revealed that 5-(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl)-2-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-yl formate (compound 1) induced distinct EAG responses in female Aedes albopictus. At concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 mg/L, the EAG response values for compound 1 were 179.59, 183.99, 190.38, 193.80, and 196.66 mV, demonstrating comparable or superior effectiveness to DEET. Repellent activity analysis indicated significant repellent activity for compound 1, closest to the positive control DEET. The in silico assessment of the ADMET profile of compound 1 indicates that it successfully passed the ADMET evaluation. Molecular docking studies exhibited favourable binding of compound 1 to the active site of the odorant binding protein (OBP) of Aedes albopictus, involving hydrophobic forces and hydrogen bond interactions with residues in the OBP pocket. The QSAR model highlighted the influential role of hydrogen-bonding receptors, positively charged surface area of weighted atoms, polarity parameters of molecules, and maximum nuclear-nuclear repulsion force of carbon-carbon bonds on the relative EAG response values of the tested compounds. This study holds substantial significance for the advancement of new terpenoid repellents.

Mosquitoes are well-known vectors of malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, yellow fever, Zika and many other diseases, and have become a great threat to public health. Nowadays, chemical insecticides are widely used for the control of mosquitoes. However, their widespread use has created some serious problems, such as insecticide resistance , environmental pollution, and toxicity to human beings. With the objectives to develop novel botanical and eco-friendly insecticides for mosquitoes, in this study we examined the chemical compositions of the essential oils (EOs) from different aging years of Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (PCR, Guangchenpi in Chinese), and investigated their anti-mosquito activity in details. As a result, 39, 44, 48, and 40 main components were identified from the 1-, 5-, 10-, and 15-year PCR EOs, respectively. For each PCR EO, D-limonene (47.90–56.39%) and γ -terpinene (14.98–17.03%) were the major components. These PCR EOs showed potent larvicidal activity against Aedes albopictus ( A. albopictus ) larvae (LC 50 = 54.50–68.23 ppm ppm), and some of the major components were also very active, including D-limonene (LC 50 = 56.17 ppm), γ -terpinene (LC 50 = 64.28 ppm), β -myrcene (LC 50 = 54.51 ppm) and terpinolene (LC 50 = 57.69 ppm). These PCR EOs exhibited similar larvicidal activity, and their insecticidal activity may be attributed to the major constituents such as D-limonene, γ -terpinene and terpinolene. In addition, thymol was found more effective against A. albopictus adults (LC 50 = 96.82 ppm) than the other components, such as methyl 2-(methylamino) benzoate (LC 50 = 382.10 ppm) and α -terpineol (LC 50 = 507.54 ppm), and this compound could be one of the active components responsible for the adulticidal activity. Enzyme inhibition assays suggested that the activity of acetylcholinesterase , mixed function oxidase and esterase were significantly inhibited, which may result in the mortality of A. albopictus larvae. The present findings clearly demonstrated that naturally-occurring PCR EOs and the functional components display potent insecticidal activity against A. albopictus larvae and adults, and therefore, strongly suggest that PCR EOs and the main components are exploitable as botanical insecticides for the control of mosquitoes.

Personal protective clothing with versatile and durable features is highly desirable for daily and specific environmental scenarios. Especially for outdoor workers or sports enthusiasts, prolonged outdoor exposure requires their clothing to be more functional to cope with a wide range of situations, such as heat stress in summer, odor generation after sweating, and mosquito bites. These not only reduce the wearing comfort of clothing, but also bring potential heat stroke, skin infections and diseases brought by mosquitoes. Currently, most outdoor protective clothes focus on a single function, such as waterproofing and UV protection and are not able to cope with the demand of multiple protections. In this paper, we developed permethrin-containing triblock cationic polymers (PTCPs) that can multi-functionalize outdoor clothing. Benefiting from their high affinity to polyester fibers, PTCP modified polyester yarns were obtained by an aqueous based finishing process. After that, a scalable machine-knitting fabrication technique is employed to fabricate Janus outdoor protective clothes (Janus-OPC). The as-prepared Janus-OPC exhibited excellent one-way moisture transfer properties (forward cumulative one-way transfer index (OWTI) of 924.23%, and backward OWTI of −690.52%), antimicrobial properties (97.73% and 99.72% against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively), and mosquito repellent properties (repelling rate of 76.19%). Moreover, the protective performance of the Janus-OPC was maintained after 50 times of equivalent home laundering cycles. This multifunctional protective clothing opens up a new direction for the next-generation outdoor wear.
