Introduction: Tuta absoluta is currently considered one of the most devastating invasive pests of solanaceous plants worldwide, causing severe damage to the tomato industry. Insects use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to locate host plant for feeding and oviposition. Those VOCs could be developed as lures for pest monitoring and control. Methods: In this study, the differentially accumulated VOCs between the preferred host (tomato) and non-preferred host (eggplant) were analyzed by GC–MS method, and their roles on female T. absoluta host selection and egg laying behaviors were investigated using electroantennography (EAG), olfactometer and cage experiments. Results: A total of 39 differentially accumulated VOCs were identified in tomato and eggplant. Strong EAG signals were obtained in 9 VOCs, including 5 VOCs highly accumulated in tomato and 4 VOCs highly accumulated in eggplant. Further olfactometer bioassays showed that 4 compounds (1-nonanol, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl octanoate and o-nitrophenol) were attractive to T. absoluta females, while 5 compounds (2-phenylethanol, 2-pentylfuran, trans,trans-2,4-nonadienal, 2-ethyl-5-methylpyrazine and trans-2-nonenal) were repellent, indicating that VOCs from host plants play important roles in host plant preferences. The attractive activities of 1-nonanol and ethyl octanoate, as well as the repellent activities of trans,trans-2,4-nonadienal and trans-2-nonenal, were further confirmed in cage experiments.Discussion: In this study, two attractants and two repellents for T. absoluta were developed from plant released VOCs. Our results could be useful to enhance the development of eco-friendly and sustainable pest management strategies for T. absoluta.

Eugenol (EUG) is a natural compound with antibacterial and insect repellent activity. Its processing, utilization, and storage are limited due to its strong volatility, instability, and low solubility in water. In this study, an amphiphilic polymer-based nano-green coating (CMC-CYST-EUG) based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) has been prepared, EUG was grafted into CMC by thiol-ene click reaction of Cysteamine hydrochloride (CYST) to reduce the volatility of EUG. When exposed to the same environment, the antibacterial duration of CMC-CYST-EUG increased by 7.8 times compared with pure EUG. Liquid holding capacity of CMC-CYST-EUG on pakchoi leaf surface increased by 81% compared with EUG solution. It shows that CMC-CYST-EUG has good adhesion to fruits and vegetables and can prevent the loss of EUG. Strawberry treated with CMC-CYST-EUG can be stored for 7 days. Within the concentration range of 0.5–0.25 mg/mL, the antifeedant rate of CMC-CYST-EUG to pests was significantly higher than that of EUG. Importantly, cytotoxicity tests show that CMC-CYST-EUG is considered safe at low concentrations. This synthetic material provides a strategy for the development and utilization of volatile active substances.

Electroantennogram (EAG), Y-tube olfactometer, and wind tunnel bioassays were conducted to test the electrophysiological and behavioral responses of Cryptorrhynchus lapathi L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to six individual volatiles and seven essential oils (compounded volatiles). The aim of this study was to select effective plant compounds that can be used in the development of semiochemical-based push–pull methods for the control of this harmful insect. Male and female C. lapathi displayed strong EAG responses to linoleic acid, α-pinene, ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol, geraniol, turpentine oil, and salicylaldehyde. Y-tube olfactometer assays indicated that salicylaldehyde and α-pinene elicited strong repellent effects on female C. lapathi . Linoleic acid and ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol showed greater luring effects on male and female C. lapathi compared with the control. Turpentine oil was stronger repellent, and geraniol showed stronger luring effects on male C. lapathi than the control. Wind tunnel assays with both male and female C. lapathi indicated that salicylaldehyde, α-pinene, and turpentine oil elicited repellent effects compared with the control. Linoleic acid, ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol, and geraniol were stronger lures of both male and female C. lapathi than the control. These results provide a basis for the further development of C. lapathi luring and repellent agents.

The cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne (F.), presents a significant management challenge as a stored product pest. The beetle's increasing resistance to conventional fumigants necessitates the search for alternative solutions to mitigate losses in agro-based industries. Here, we constructed a small molecule compounds library containing twenty-eight methyl benzoate-related compounds (MBCs) and evaluated their repellent and toxic effects against cigarette beetles by Y-tube olfactometer behavioral assays, free-choice box assays and fumigation assays. We found that six MBCs (methyl 3-methoxybenzoate, methyl benzoate, methyl 3-formylbenzoate, methyl 2-aminopyridine-3-carboxylate, methyl 2-aminobenzoate and methyl 4-amino-2-methoxybenzoate) act as repellents for cigarette beetles. Notably, methyl benzoate (MeBA) was effective across a broader range of concentrations (200–4000 ppm) compared to other MBCs. Four compounds (methyl 3-formylbenzoate, methyl 2-aminopyridine-3-carboxylate, methyl 2-aminobenzoate and methyl 4-amino-2-methoxybenzoate) required higher minimum concentrations (500–4000 ppm) than MeBA for repellence, while methyl 3-methoxybenzoate was effective at a concentration (10 ppm) lower than that for MeBA. Mixtures of MeBA with methyl 3-methoxybenzoate and methyl 3-formylbenzoate enhanced the repellent effect against cigarette beetles when compared to MeBA alone. Additionally, exposure to varying concentrations of MeBA, methyl 3-methoxybenzoate, methyl 3-formylbenzoate, and methyl 2-aminobenzoate resulted in 100% mortality of cigarette beetles. Our findings indicate that specific MBCs offer the potential for their use as repellents and fumigants for this problematic stored product pest.

Mosquito bites are prevalent occurrences among various populations worldwide, mosquito repellent chemical components (MRCCs) have been extensively utilized. MRCCs have been frequently identified in environmental settings nowadays. However, the implications of these compounds on skin conditions, particularly Atopic Dermatitis (AD), are not well understood. In this investigation, we analyzed three commercially available MRCCs: DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), IR3535 (ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate), and picaridin (2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-piperidinecarboxylic acid 1-methyl ester). A comprehensive analysis was conducted utilizing various databases to identify potential targets associated with exposure to these MRCCs and their correlation with AD. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses revealed that exposure to these MRCCs influences inflammation-related pathways. Additionally, molecular docking studies indicated significant binding affinities of DEET, IR3535, and picaridin to critical core targets and receptor proteins. Furthermore, a series of cellular assays were conducted to empirically evaluate the actual effects of these three MRCCs on the induction of AD. The results suggest that MRCCs may facilitate the progression of AD by influencing inflammatory processes. This study provides a conceptual framework for understanding the association between MRCCs and the risk of AD, thereby contributing to the formulation of strategies aimed at mitigating their effects on dermatological disorders.

Simple SummaryDue to the environment and human health concerns of synthetic repellents, essential oils (EOs) as natural alternatives have received increased attention. In this study, the repellent activity of 60 commercial EOs againstAedes albopictuswas evaluated. In the initial screening, 8 active EOs including cinnamon, marjoram, lemongrass, bay, chamomile, jasmine, peppermint2, and thyme were selected. Twenty-one major constituents (>5% relative area) in the 8 active EOs were identified via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Cinnamaldehyde, citral and terpinene-4-ol displayed the highest repellent activity with more than 60% RR, which were more active thanN,N-diethyl-3-methyl benzoyl amide (DEET). Next, their nanoemulsions were prepared and characterized. In the arm-in-cage assay, cinnamaldehyde- and citral-based nanoemulsions have prolonged mosquito protection time compared with their normal solutions.AbstractMosquitoes are one of the most important disease vectors from a medical viewpoint in that they transmit several diseases such as malaria, filariasis, yellow and Dengue fever. Mosquito vector control and personal protection from mosquito bites are currently the most efficient ways to prevent these diseases. Several synthetic repellents such as DEET, ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate (IR3535) and 1-(1-methylpropoxycarbonyl)-2-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperidine) (Picaridin), have been widely used to prevent humans from receiving mosquito bites. However, the use of synthetic repellents has raised several environment and health concerns. Therefore, essential oils (EOs) as natural alternatives receive our attention. In order to discover highly effective mosquito repellents from natural sources, the repellent activity of 60 commercial EOs againstAe. albopictuswas screened in this study. Eight EOs including cinnamon, marjoram, lemongrass, bay, chamomile, jasmine, peppermint2, and thyme, showed a suitable repellent rate (>40%) at the tested dose of 10 μg/cm2. Then, their main constituents were analyzed by GC-MS, and the active constituents were identified. The most active compounds including cinnamaldehyde, citral and terpinen-4-ol, exhibited an 82%, 65% and 60% repellent rate, respectively. Moreover, the nanoemulsions of the three active compounds were prepared and characterized. In the arm-in-cage assay, the protection times of the nanoemulsions of cinnamaldehyde and citral were significantly extended compared with their normal solutions. This study provides several lead compounds to develop new mosquito repellents, and it suggests that nanoemulsification is an effective method for improving the duration of the activity of natural repellents.

Plant-based insect repellents are environmentally-friendly and play a practical and economic role in preventing the transmission of diseases to humans. Preformed 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (pHEMA) hydrogels were functionalized with pedant triazinyl-β-cyclodextrin (T-β-CD) with the aim of improving the ability to host and release plant-based repellents. The structural and thermal properties were investigated by FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The most potent mosquito repellents, geraniol, methyl salicylate and trans-cinnamaldehyde, were screened from 35 plant-based compounds through Y-tube olfactometer assay. Pendant T-β-CDs did not affect the swelling of the hydrogels and exhibited low cytotoxicity towards mouse embryo fibroblasts, and no skin irritation or allergy was observed on human skin treated with modified hydrogels loaded with repellents. The physicochemical properties of the repellent and its affinity to form complexes determined the role played by the CDs in the loading and release. Methyl salicylate possessed an optimal stability constant KS (232.19 M−1) and thus it got a longer protection duration with higher repellent activity. Increasing the crosslink density resulted in decreases in the degree of swelling, the amount of T-β-CDs bonded to hydrogels, and the duration of complete repellency. Additionally, pHEMA hydrogels with pendant T-β-CDs showed good recyclability. The new hydrogel formulation loaded with plant-based repellents may provide a suitable, eco-friendly and safe approach to achieve protection against mosquitoes.
