A highly porous animal bone-derived char with a superiority of promoting nZVI for Cr(VI) sequestration in agricultural soils

Kai Liu,Fangbai Li,Qingwen Tian,Chengrong Nie,Yibing Ma,Zhenlong Zhu,Liping Fang,Yuanying Huang,Siwen Liu

Paddy soil and irrigation water are commonly contaminated with hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] near urban industrial areas, thereby threatening the safety of agricultural products and human health. In this study, we develop a porous and high specific area bone char (BC) to support nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and apply it to remediate Cr(VI) pollution in water and paddy soil under anaerobic conditions. The batch experiments reveal that BC/nZVI exhibits a higher removal capacity of 516.7 mg/(g•nZVI) for Cr(VI) than nZVI when normalized to the actual nZVI content, which is 2.8 times that of nZVI; moreover, the highest nZVI utilization is the nZVI loading of 15% (BC/nZVI15). The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of BC/nZVI15 decreases with increasing pH (4 – 10). Coexisting ions (phosphate and carbonate) and humic acid can inhibit the removal of Cr(VI) with BC/nZVI15. Additionally, BC exhibits a strong advantage in promoting Cr(VI) removal by nZVI compared to the widely used biochar and activated carbon. Our results demonstrate that reduction and coprecipitation are the dominant Cr(VI) removal mechanisms. Furthermore, BC/nZVI15 shows a significantly higher reduction and removal efficiency as well as a strong anti-interference ability for Cr(VI) in paddy soil, as compared to nZVI. These findings provide a new effective material for remediating Cr(VI) pollution from water and soil.

Fabrication of electrospun cellulose/ball-milled bone char membranes for fast, efficient and selective sorption of aquatic U(VI)

Junjun Li,Tatiana Cherkasova,Yakovlev Alexey Nikolaevich,Peiling Yuan

Powdered sorbents in aqueous solutions suffer from the deficiency in the solid/liquid separation even the sorption capacities were higher than their bulk or less-dispersed forms. The combination of powdered sorbents with membranes would be highly desired to balance the contradiction between high separation efficiency and sorption capability. In this study, cellulose/ball-milled bone char (CL/MB) membranes with sub-micrometer diameter (276.0–281.7 nm) and developed porosity (21.5–98.6 m 2 /g) were fabricated by electrospinning technique. Bone chars originated from the pyrolysis of bone residuals at 350 °C, 500 °C and 650 °C could well dispersed in the electrospinning solvent. CL/MB membranes could adsorb U(VI) with fast kinetics (180.0 min), efficient capacity (309.8 mg/g at pH 5.00 and T 298 K) and excellent selectivity against the interference of coexisting ions in simulated waters. With spectroscopic analysis , the formation of (Ca(UO 2 ) 2 (PO 4 ) 2 (H 2 O) 3 precipitation was dominant for the selectivity. The surface complexation of O-/reductive N-groups with U(VI), the electrostatic attraction of deprotonated O - with positively charged U(VI) species, the cation exchange of U(VI) with Ca 2+ components, and the cation-π coordination of U(VI) should also be considered. This study pave the way for the feasible utilization of electrospun CL/MB membranes as a promising sorbent to capture aquatic U(VI).

Efficient lead immobilization by bio-beads containing Pseudomonas rhodesiae and bone char

Junpeng Li,Rui Bai,Wei Chen,Chongyuan Ren,Fan Yang,Xiaochun Tian,Xiaofeng Xiao,Feng Zhao

Mineralization of lead ions (Pb 2+ ) to pyromorphite using phosphorus-containing materials is an effective way to remediate lead (Pb) contamination. Bone char is rich in phosphorus, but its immobilization of Pb 2+ is limited by poor phosphate release. To utilize the phosphorus in bone char and provide a suitable growth environment for phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, bone char and Pseudomonas rhodesiae HP-7 were encapsulated into bio-beads, and the immobilization performance and mechanism of Pb in solution and soil by bio-beads were investigated. The results showed that 137 mg/g of phosphorus was released from bone char in the presence of the HP-7 strain. Pb 2+ removal efficiency reached 100 % with an initial Pb 2+ concentration of 1 mM, bone char content of 6 g/L, and bio-bead dosage of 1 %. Most Pb 2+ was immobilized on the surface of the bio-beads as Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl. The soil remediation experiments showed a 34 % reduction in the acid-soluble fraction of Pb. The bio-beads showed good stability in long-term (30 d) soil remediation. The present study shows that bone char can be turned into an efficient Pb immobilization material in the presence of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria. Thus, bio-beads are expected to be used in the remediation of Pb-contaminated environments.

Nitrogen-functionalized bone chars with developed surface area for efficient adsorption of multiple aquatic pollutants

Ziyan Yang,Yuhui Dong,Xiang Meng,Xiaoli Yang,Rui Hu,Yuhao Liu,Junfeng Wu

Bone chars pyrolyzed from bone residuals exhibit impressive performances to remove heavy metals given the integration of hydroxyapatite and carbon components. Considering the complexation of functional groups with metal ions and the adsorption of molecules by porous pores, this work prepared nitrogen-functionalized bone chars (NMBCs) with developed surface area (16.99- to 6.71-fold enhancement) and favorable surface modification (maximum 6.03 at% of N) via a ball milling of pristine bone chars with the assistance of ammonia hydroxide. NMBCs presented excellent maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) (339.8 mg/g), U(VI) (466.5 mg/g), and methylene blue (338.3 mg/g) (pH 5.0, T 293 K) from ideal solutions. The effects of geochemical conditions including contact time, solution pH, ionic strength , humic acid, and ambient temperature on adsorption behaviors were investigated. NMBCs favorably adsorbed Cr(VI) (221.8 mg/g at pH 2.0, 175.4 mg/g at pH 4.0) and U(VI) (202.1 mg/g) from simulated wastewater and seawater respectively. With the analysis using spectroscopic technologies, the dominant mechanisms of Cr(VI), U(VI), and methylene blue were the integration of electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, precipitation, cation exchange, cation-π coordination and π–π interaction. This work provided a promising reference for the functionalization of bone chars with enhanced performance and multifunctionality in the remediation of pollutants.

Fabrication of electrospun cellulose/chitosan/ball-milled bone char membranes for efficient and selective sorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions

Du Xuan,Rashid Suraya Abdul,Abdullah Luqman Chuah,Rahman Norizah Abdul

Separation materials have received increasing attention given their broad applications in the management of environmental pollution. It is desired to balance the contradiction between high separation efficiency and selectivity of separation materials. The integration of ball-milled bone chars with electrospun membranes might achieve this balance. In this study, electrospun cellulose/chitosan/ball-milled bone char (CL/CS/MB) membranes were by well-dispersing ball-milled bone chars with nanoscale size (98.9–167.5 nm) and developed porosity (40.2–373.1 m 2 /g) in the electrospinning solvent. The synergistic integration of distributed MBs (5.4–31.5 wt.% of loading hydroxyapatite on the membrane matrix) allowed the efficient sorption of Pb(II) with fast kinetics (20.0 min), excellent capacity (219.9 mg/g at pH 5.0, T 298 K), and favorable selectivity coefficients (2.76–6.79). The formation of minerals was dominant for the selective sorption of Pb(II) by combining the spectral analysis and quantitative determination. The surface complexation with O-/reductive N-species, the cation exchange with inorganic Ca 2+ , the electrostatic attraction with deprotonated O − , and the cation-π coordination with the aromatic carbon via the π-electrons should be not ignored for the capture of Pb(II). This work demonstrated the feasibility of electrospun CL/CS/MB membranes as a promising candidate for the remediation of aquatic pollutants.

Sorption of Cd2+ on Bone Chars with or without Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment under Various Pyrolysis Temperatures: Comparison of Mechanisms and Performance

Qing Guo,Hongmei Tang,Lu Jiang,Meiqing Chen,Nengwu Zhu,Pingxiao Wu

In this study, bone char pretreated with hydrogen peroxide and traditional pyrolysis was applied to remove Cd2+from aqueous solutions. After hydrogen peroxide pretreatment, the organic matter content of the bone char significantly decreased, while the surface area, the negative charge and the number of oxygen-containing functional groups on the bone char surface increased. After being pyrolyzed, the specific surface area and the negative charge of the material were further improved. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Cd2+adsorption were studied, and the influence of solution pH and the presence of ionic species were investigated. The experimental results showed that the samples with lower crystallinity exhibited less organic matter content and more surface oxygen-containing functional groups, resulting in stronger adsorption capacity. After being treated with hydrogen peroxide and pyrolyzed at 300 °C, the maximum adsorption capacity of bone char was 228.73 mg/g. The bone char sample with the lowest adsorption capacity(47.71 mg/g) was pyrolyzed at 900 °C without hydrogen peroxide pretreatment. Ion exchange, surface complexation, and electrostatic interactions were responsible for the elimination of Cd2+by the bone char samples. Overall, this work indicates that hydrogen peroxide-treated pyrolytic bone char is a promising material for the immobilization of Cd2+.

Insight into iron oxychloride composite bone char for peroxymonosulfate activation: Mechanism of singlet oxygen evolution for selective degradation of organic pollutants

Yifeng Zeng,Fan Wang,Dongqin He,Jun Li,Hongwei Luo,Xiangliang Pan

The activity of iron-based catalysts in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is limited by the redox cycle of Fe(III) and Fe(II). In this work, iron oxychloride (FeOCl) with a unique layered structure was loaded on the bone char (BC) to enhance the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Characterization of the FeOCl-BC catalyst reveals that the loading of FeOCl changed the composition and structure of BC and BC reduced the bond gap of FeOCl. Acetaminophen (APAP) as a target pollutant could be almost completely degraded at neutral pH, and the removal rate reached 0.6597 min −1 . APAP could also be selectively oxidized by FeOCl-BC/PMS system in the presence of some inorganic anions (SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , and Cl − ) and humic acid . Quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), chemical probes, and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) confirm that the primary oxidation mechanism of the FeOCl-BC/PMS system was dominated by 1 O 2 . The 1 O 2 was generated from the conversion of O 2 •− and the self-dissociation of PMS, involving the formation of metastable iron intermediates and the redox cycle of Fe(III) and Fe(II). The unique structure of FeOCl, the transport of lattice oxygen and the enrichment of electrons by carbon defects play an essential role in generating reactive species. In this work, the limitation of the redox cycle of Fe(III) and Fe(II) was broken by loading FeOCl on the surface of BC, and a new catalytic mechanism was proposed. This work provides a new perspective for the construction of efficient iron-based catalysts and the practical application of PMS-based AOPs.

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of Pb(II) and complex Cu(II) species by biowaste-derived char with amino functionalization

Yuanli Liu,Jiang Xu,Zhen Cao,Ruiqi Fu,Chuchen Zhou,Zheni Wang,Xinhua Xu

This work aimed to develop a feasible technology to reuse dead pig biowaste for heavy metals removal , which was first carbonized into pig bone char (PBC) after pyrolysis and further functionalized with amino ( NH 2 ) to improve its affinity with heavy metals. The application of PBC after NH 2 -functionalization for aqueous heavy metals removal was explored, including Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , and different complex Cu(II) species. PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 showed comparable performance with AC@SiO 2 -NH 2 . The adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was 120 and 30 mg g −1 , respectively. The NH 2 functionalization enhanced the adsorption of complex Cu(II) species, and PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 exhibited good performance under a wide pH range and coexisting ions. The adsorption of Cu(II) EDTA species with an EDTA/Cu(II) molar ratio of 1.0 by PBC would be enhanced ~3 times and ~6 times after NH 2 functionalization and further addition of Fe 3+ , respectively. The results of EDX , elemental mapping, and XPS confirmed the adsorption of Cu(II) species. The adsorption kinetics , isotherm, and thermodynamics of different Cu(II) species by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 were investigated. The regeneration of PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was easily performed via acidic wash. These results suggested the application potential of the reuse of biowaste, which could be a promising adsorbent for aqueous heavy metals after specific functionalization.

Role of superoxide radical and singlet oxygen in peroxymonosulfate activation by iron-doped bone char for efficient acetaminophen degradation

Yifeng Zeng,Fan Wang,Dongqin He,Jianqiang Sun,Jun Li,Hongwei Luo,Xiangliang Pan

Bone char is a hydroxyapatite-rich product obtained by calcining animal bones. However, the role of inorganic hydroxyapatite is often overlooked in bone char-catalyzed persulfate systems. In this work, iron was doped into swine bone-derived biochar (Fe-BC) by simple impregnation, and the Fe-BC catalysts were used for the first time to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The obtained Fe-BC/PMS system could rapidly degrade the target pollutants (0.0529 s −1 , 90 s) employing singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS). The characterization results demonstrated that iron was mainly intercalated into the catalyst by substituting calcium sites in swine bone biochar, and the Fe-BC composition was significantly affected by annealing temperature. A comprehensive study including quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), chemical probes, and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) revealed that 1 O 2 was the dominant ROS. According to the characterization results, 1 O 2 was generated from the conversion of superoxide radical (O 2 •− ) and the self-dissociation of PMS. Iron was the main active site of Fe-BC catalysts, and the carbon defects and oxygen-containing groups also played roles in catalyzing PMS. The Fe-BC/PMS system exhibited outstanding oxidative capability over a wide pH range (3.0–9.0) and was resistant to interference from some high concentrations of anions (Cl − , NO 3 – , and SO 4 2− ). This work provides a new perspective on using animal bone-derived biochar catalysts in advanced oxidation processes.

Pyrolyzed bone char for nitrobenzene adsorption: Insight into the physicochemical characterizations and adsorption mechanisms

Shakeel Ahmad,Mingyi Zhang,Yu Li,Xinzuo Yang,Feilong Gao,Jingchun Tang

In this study, the preparation of pyrolyzed bone chars for the removal of nitrobenzene (NB) from the water was examined. Adsorption properties of bone chars prepared at diverse pyrolysis temperatures (300–900 ℃) were investigated for removing NB from aqueous solutions. At higher temperatures (700 and 900 ℃), bone chars showed superior adsorption properties for NB removal, and physicochemical characterizations showed that the pyrolyzed bone chars possessed improved properties and amended porous structure after pyrolysis treatment. Pyrolysis temperatures of > 700 ℃ contributed to the dehydroxylation of hydroxyapatite of bone chars, increasing their NB adsorption performance. Maximum NB adsorption capacity of higher temperature pyrolyzed bone chars calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model was 142.41 and 204.34 mg/g for bone char-700 and bone char-900, respectively, indicating that the bone chars had the potential for enhanced NB adsorption. For adsorption isotherm parameters, two-parameter (Langmuir and Freundlich) models showed satisfactory results of NB adsorption on bone char from aqueous solution. Adsorption kinetic parameters of NB adsorption on bone chars showed pleasing results for the pseudo 2 nd order model. This study shows that the pyrolyzed bone char is an efficient adsorbent for removing NB from water.

Mechanism of targeted adsorption and specific action of bone char on ionic organic pollutants: An analysis based on differences in physicochemical properties

Yuyu Li,Jiale Liu,Xian Liu,Lujia Han

Adsorption is a widely recognized and effective method for treating high-concentration organic industrial wastewater. Bone char (BC) is a promising adsorbent for removing ionic organic pollutants (IOPs) from printing and dyeing wastewater due to its advantageous adsorption properties. To analyze BC's targeted adsorption and specific action mechanism on IOPs, the author first elucidated the physicochemical properties of BC under different preparation conditions. Subsequently, the study compared the targeted adsorption efficacy of BC on various types and molecular structures of IOPs. Through correlation analysis, feature importance analysis, and consideration of the properties of the target substance, the study investigated the targeted adsorption laws of BC for IOPs. Lastly, for substances with specific adsorption characteristics, range analysis, structure–activity relationship analysis, and quantitative analysis of adsorption mechanisms were employed to elucidate the action mechanism of BC. The results indicate that the differences in physicochemical properties (especially CEC and pH) caused by the inorganic mineral components of BC and the number of conjugated double bonds in the molecular structure of IOPs are key factors determining the adsorption effect. Controlling BC's pore structure and electrical conductivity based on the aggregates' conjugated double bonds and particle size can improve adsorption outcomes. The hierarchy of preparation factors influencing the adsorption performance of BC is pyrolysis temperature > particle size > pyrolysis atmosphere. The adsorption of malachite green (MG) by BC primarily involves chemical reactions, including mineral complexation effect (52.38 %), electrostatic interaction (24.76 %), π-π interaction (8.15 %), metal ion exchange (8.12 %), and physical pore filling (6.59 %). It is speculated that the primary interaction mechanism between BC and MG is through cation-π bonds formed between metal cations dissociated from the inorganic mineral components of BC and MG, facilitated by strong electrostatic interaction. The findings offer a theoretical basis for the practical utilization of BC in adsorbing IOPs.
