Polyamide pervaporation membranes, with excellent stability and resist swelling at high temperatures, enable superior capacity for high-salinity solutions compared to other pervaporation membranes. However, the low permeate flux impedes their technical realization for large-scale applications. Here, we prepared a pervaporation membrane based on a 5-sulfinyl amino isophthaloyl dichloride (NSO) monomer. NSO contains a sulfinamide group, which can be used as an acid-binding agent to combine with H + to promote the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction, thus inhibiting the growth of the polyamide layer and leading to the formation of a thinner separation layer. In addition, the sulfinamide group is converted to an amino group during the IP process, which can continue to participate in the IP reaction and further enhance the cross-linking degree of the separation layer. The resulting ultrathin and highly crosslinked polyamide pervaporation membranes show exceptional performance in pervaporation desalination, achieving a pervaporation flux of 50.54 kg m −2 h −1 and a rejection of 99.99% when measured with 3.5 wt% NaCl solution as feed. NSO monomer presents a promising pathway to overcome the limitations of pervaporation desalination membranes, advancing the application potential of polyamide membranes for practical high-salt wastewater treatment.

An effective polymerization system was developed for the synthesis of highly cross-linked hydrophilic monodispersed microspheres with both the micropores and mesopores inside. A series of poly( N , N ′-methylenebisacrylamide) (PMBA) microspheres with the diameters ranging from 100 to 300 nm were synthesized by distillation precipitation polymerization with N , N -dimethylacetamide (DMAC) as the porogen, acetonitrile as the solvent, and MBA as the cross-linker and monomer. The particle size, morphology, and porosity varied according to the variation of the DMAC content. The porosity was determined by physical adsorption of nitrogen, and reached the maximum at 7.5 vol% of DMAC with the specific surface area at 135.8 m 2 g −1 and the total pore volume at 0.43 cm 3 g −1 . The porous and hydrophilic microspheres showed excellent swelling property in water and adsorption property for the Cd(II) in aqueous solution. Meanwhile, carboxylic groups were incorporated into the porous microspheres to achieve porous poly( N , N ′-methylenebisacrylamide- co -acrylic acid) (P (MBA- co -AA)-P), which exhibited obvious synergies of the pores and functional groups on the adsorption and provided a perspective application of the Cd(II) removal.

New approaches for the engineering of well-defined, pore modality, and multi-chemical functionality nanocomposites are crucial to generate the next generation of functional materials with recoverable and easy preparation properties. Here, a catalyst and heat free polymerization reaction is exploited and fabricated zwitterionic system around magnetic nanoparticles. N-aminoethyl piperazine propane sulfonate (AEPPS) and dopamine (DA) are introduced as the zwitterionic system, which provided abundant zwitterionic groups (NH 2 , SO 3 − , N + ) and strong adhesion and various oxidation state properties. And that, the zwitterionic engineering will assemble between AEPPS and DA whereby Schiff base formation or Michael type addition. Whereafter, a series of sophisticated array of microscopic, spectroscopic, and structure techniques verify the formation of highly crosslinking internal zwitterionic architectures, well-defined core–shell structure, and better porosity. The zwitterionic structure–function relationships and striking porous structure are explored in a multi-interaction adsorption assay. The adsorption capacity of the magnetic nanocomposites was 1065.8 mg/g. And that, the system exhibited with hydrophilic-hydrophobic activity towards glycoprotein and better performance to bioactive protein (Ig-G) isolation form human whole blood sample. The synergistic enhancement interaction in hydrophilic target enrichment, easy preparation, and soft substrate properties of the AEPPS-DA zwitterionic materials make them intriguing candidates for sustainable biomedical loading and chromatographic separation.
