Scintillators have garnered heightened attention for their diverse applications in medical imaging and security inspection. Nonetheless, commercial scintillators encounter challenges with costly rare-earth metals and toxic elements like thallium (Tl), driving the need for sustainable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternatives to meet contemporary X-ray detection demands. This study focuses on exploring the potential of Cu+-doped Rb2AgI3 as an effective metal halide (MH) scintillator. One-dimensional (1D) Rb2AgI3 and Cu+-doped Rb2AgI3 single crystals (SCs) were synthesized by using the conventional temperature-lowering crystallization method. When excited by UV light, Cu+-doped SCs emitted a broad sky-blue light at 490 nm with a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (PLQY) of 76.48%. Remarkably, under X-ray excitation, these Cu+-doped SCs demonstrated an outstanding light yield of 36,293 photons MeV–1, a relatively low detection threshold of 1.022 μGyair s–1, and a rapid scintillation decay time of 465 ns. The prepared translucent scintillation film has good uniformity and flexibility, with a high spatial resolution of 10.2 lp mm–1. These results position Cu+-doped Rb2AgI3 as a leading candidate among promising X-ray scintillators, offering superior scintillation light yield, excellent stability, and nontoxicity.

High-performance X-ray scintillation detectors are crucial for X-ray imaging applications, relying on scintillators with high light-yield (LY). In contrast to conventional scintillators with large bandgaps ( E g ), halide perovskite materials with low E g exhibit high LY, emerging as next-generation scintillation materials. Additionally, doping with rare-earth ions extends the emission wavelength to the near-infrared (NIR) region, effectively suppressing light self-absorption of perovskite materials. Here, we fabricated a Ytterbium-ion (Yb 3+ ) doped CsPbCl 3 : 2%Yb 3+ single crystal (SC) with a large-size of Φ30 × 40 mm via the Bridgman method, which exhibits a low E g of 2.88 eV and efficient NIR luminescence centered at 985 nm, achieves a high steady state LY of 83 703 photons MeV −1 , and a large effective “Stokes shift” of 563 nm. Furthermore, we prepare a series of flexible scintillation films by embedding CsPbCl 3 : 2%Yb 3+ powder in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Owing to the efficient NIR luminescence, these films enable clear X-ray imaging even under bright white-LED interference, demonstrating a low X-ray detection limit of 17.8 nGy air s −1 and a high spatial resolution of 10 lp mm −1 . This work provides a high-LY NIR scintillator for X-ray flexible imaging, paving the way for low dose-rate X-ray imaging for portable and fast radiography.

A series of Ce 3+ -doped Gd 2 O 3 -GdF 3 -Al 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glass scintillators (GSC x and GLC x ) were successfully synthesized in reducing atmosphere for future imaging application. The transmittance of GSC x glasses exceeds 85 % in range of 500–800 nm, and the cut-off edge red shifts as the Ce 3+ concentration increases. In photoluminescence (PL), GSC x glass scintillators have a 360–600 nm broadband emission with a shoulder peak at around 450 nm. Meanwhile, the PL lifetime of GSC x glasses is close to the CeF 3 crystals, and the PL QY of GSC 3 glass scintillator reaches up 70.2 %. For scintillation application, the integral XEL intensity of GSC 2 and GSC 3 glasses is 31.3 % and 24.4 % of that of BGO crystal. GLC 2 and GLC 3 glasses exhibit similar spatial resolution of approximately 7 lp·mm −1 . Moreover, the light yields of GSC 2 and GSC 3 glass scintillator are 1702 and 1690 ph/MeV excited by γ-ray, respectively. The nonproportionality of GSC x glasses is less than 3 % in the range of 100–1400 keV due to the large density and Z eff . As Ce 3+ concentration increases, both the fast and slow components of the glasses decrease (103.7 ns–89.7 ns, 1454.4 ns–1012.8 ns), and the proportion of fast component also increased from 3.3 % to 4.7 %. For γ-ray imaging, the scintillation light events of the glass can be observed from SiPM array, and the central position (−2, −1) have the highest count rate of the system. The results show that GSCx and GLCx glass scintillators deserve further development for future applications.
