Development of rechargeable alkaline Zn–Mn batteries has been facing big challenges for low working voltage and poor cycling stability, although they have advantages of low cost, high safety, and simple maintenance. For the first time, this work demonstrates a record high voltage (1.78 V) for rechargeable alkaline Zn–MnO 4 − battery achieved by a high reversible redox pair of MnO 4 − /MnO 4 2− , which shows excellent cycling stability up to 1,500 cycles at a high current density of 20 mA cm −2 without obvious capacity attenuation. The MnO 4 − /MnO 4 2− redox reaction investigated by ex-situ scanning electron microscope as well as ultraviolet and visible absorption spectrum indicates high reversibility of the MnO 4 − /MnO 4 2− redox couple after the activation during the first discharge process. Furthermore, benefiting from the liquid-phase reaction nature of MnO 4 − /MnO 4 2− , a flow battery is further prototyped to show highly stable cycles with 95.8% of discharge capacity retention for 600 cycles at the current density of 40 mA cm −2 .

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) utilizing hydrogel electrolytes have emerged as promising sustainable solutions for flexible energy storages owing to their intrinsic safety and mechanical stability. However, the inherent poor toughness, low Zn 2+ transference number, and lacking electron field regulation capability in conventional hydrogel electrolytes exacerbate uncontrolled Zn dendrite growth and side reactions, posing a substantial challenge to interfacial stability between the Zn anode and the hydrogel electrolyte. To address this, here we present a novel biphasic hydrogel electrolyte capable of both multi-scale stress deconcentration and dual-field regulation via polymerization followed by salting-out and coordination strategy. The well-designed hydrogel electrolyte demonstrates high toughness of 17.5 kJ m −2 , an ionic conductivity of 60.6 mS cm −1 and a Zn 2+ transference number of 0.753, collectively achieving highly reversible Zn plating/stripping and exceptional interfacial stability. Consequently, the Zn||NaV 3 O 8 ·1.5H 2 O (NVO) full cells equipped with this hydrogel electrolyte show remarkable electrochemical performance, including high capacity (375.4 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), outstanding rate capability (188.9 mAh g −1 at 8 A g −1 ) and long-term cycling stability (91.6 % capacity retention after 3000 cycles), with sustained performance under harsh conditions such as high temperature, high humidity, and low temperatures (−30 °C). Furthermore, the assembled flexible pouch cells demonstrate exceptional mechanical and environmental adaptability, reliably powering a circular lamp even under severe bending at both room and −30 °C. This work provides fundamental insights into Zn anodic chemistry in multifunctional hydrogel electrolyte and offers practical guidelines for constructing advanced zinc-based energy storage devices.

Silicon oxide (SiOx) is becoming a hot spot in the research of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, the low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), weak conductivity, unsatisfied rate performance, and significant volume changes during cycling of SiOx have hindered its commercial application. Herein, a silicon–carbon composite material (SiOx/C–Sn@NC) was synthesized, featuring metal tin that is embedded within and on the surface of the SiOx framework. Additionally, a nitrogen-doped carbon layer was incorporated into the material to further mitigate volume changes. Benefitted from the discrepant lithiation/delithiation potentials of Sn and Si, the formed structure significantly limits the volume changes of the formed anode during the cycle, enhancing the cycle life and stability of the SiOx/C–Sn@NC material. Additionally, multiple nodes are provided in the part where the bridged Sn is in contact with the N-doped carbon to enhance the Li+ diffusion during charge and discharge and overall conductivity, promoting the lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. The SiOx/C–Sn@NC anode displays an ICE of 73.42% at 0.5 A g–1, retaining a capacity of 680 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles. In addition, this anode also exhibits excellent cycle performance of 591 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles, with an ICE of 70.37% at a current of 2 A g–1. The prominent cycle performance and electrochemical stability of SiOx/C–Sn@NC far surpass those of commercial silicon–carbon and graphite, offering a new pathway for the commercial application of silicon oxide-based anodes.

Metal halide perovskites are promising optoelectronic materials due to their unique luminescent properties. However, their practical application is limited by their poor chemical stability, especially in humid environments. Moisture can cause phase changes or chemical decomposition, resulting in significant fluorescence quenching. In this study, a copper-based organic–inorganic hybrid metal halide (t-BA) 3 Cu 6 I 9 is synthesized (t-BA + is the tert-butyl-ammonium ion (C(CH 3 ) 3 NH 3 + )). This material exhibits water-induced luminescence, and its chemical stability in humid environments is being investigated. Tetragonal t-BA 3 Cu 6 I 9 is not luminescent, but it reacts quickly with water in the air. The resultant (t-BA) 2 Cu 2 I 4 ·H 2 O has a broad green emission peak at 520 nm, high photoluminescence quantum yield of 59.4%. Remarkably, (t-BA) 2 Cu 2 I 4 ·H 2 O is converted back to t-BA 3 Cu 6 I 9 at temperatures above 40 °C. This phase conversion is highly repeatable, and the luminescent intensity can be fully recovered after 50 transformation cycles. The mechanism of luminescence is investigated through temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra and theoretical calculation, which suggests that (t-BA) 2 Cu 2 I 4 ·H 2 O has a more localized charge distribution and sufficient polyhedral distortion, resulting in a bright and efficient emission from self-trapped excitons. This is the first report of water-induced luminescence in copper-based metal halides, and it paves the way for stable luminescent materials that are responsive to humidity.

Neutral Zn–air batteries offer advantages in dendrite suppression and carbonation resistance, however, their performance is limited by high overpotentials resulting from insulating discharge products and sluggish oxygen kinetics. Herein, a closed-loop iodide-oxygen cycle mechanism for a neutral aqueous Zn–air/iodide hybrid battery (ZAIB), integrating oxygen and iodide redox chemistry, is proposed. A multifunctional electrocatalyst, featuring FeN nanoparticles anchored on a hierarchically porous carbon matrix, is designed to drives oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and iodide oxidation/reduction reactions (IOR/IRR). This catalyst spatially confines zinc hydroxyacetate dihydrate (ZHA) precipitates within its honeycomb meso-macroporous framework, thereby preserving triple-phase boundaries. During discharge, I – generated from I 3 – reduction enhances the kinetics, thereby increasing discharge voltage. Concurrently, OH – formed during ORR reacts with the electrolyte to produce ZHA. Upon charging, thermodynamically favored low-potential IOR dominates, regenerating I 3 – from I – and decomposing ZHA to release OH – . The released OH – then spontaneously reacts with I 3 – to regenerate I – and evolve O 2 , resulting in a reduced charge voltage. Consequently, the neutral ZAIB achieves a low charge/discharge voltage gap (640.1 mV), high energy efficiency (54.0%), and exceptional stability (>1800 h at 2 mA cm −2 ). This synergistic mediator-catalyst codesign strategy offers a viable pathway to high-performance neutral metal–air systems.

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) represent a promising battery strategy to achieve high energy density with great safety. However, inadequate kinetic property and poor interfacial compatibility remain great challenges, which impede their practical application. A prototype of dual-ion conductor of Li+ synchronized with Cu+ unlocks a four-electron redox reaction with high reversibility and fast kinetics. As a result, the constructed ASSB exhibited a high reversible capacity of 603.0 mA·hour g−1 and an excellent cycling retention of 93.2% over 1500 cycles. Moreover, because of the ion highway connecting active materials and catholytes constructed by dual-ion conductor, remarkable temperature tolerance (−60°C) and excellent rate performance (231.6 mA·hour g−1 at 20 mA cm−2) were achieved. The superior electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the migration pathway with small energy barrier and low tortuosity once the Cu+ introduced into Li6PS5Cl. This work creates a unique perspective of ASSBs with dual-ion conducting strategy, thus inspiring a potential developing strategy of state-of-the-art ASSBs.

Rechargeable multivalent metal (e.g., zinc (Zn) and aluminum (Al)) batteries are ideal choices for large-scale energy storage owing to their intrinsic low cost and safety. However, the poor compatibility between metallic anodes and electrolytes strongly hampers their practical applications. Herein, it is demonstrated that confining multivalent metals in a biomimetic scaffold (Bio-scaffold) can achieve highly efficient multivalent metal plating/stripping. This Bio-scaffold is well-tailored through the synergy of a parallel-aligned array of fractal copper branches and a CaTiO 3 (CTO)-based coating layer. By virtue of this design strategy, the as-developed Bio-scaffold-based Zn- and Al-metal anodes exhibited dendrite-free morphologies with high reversibility and long lifespan, as well as excellent performance for Zn and Al full batteries. Theoretical modeling and experimental investigations reveal that the fractal copper array not only facilitates multivalent ion diffusion and electrolyte wetting but also effectively reduces the local current densities during cycling; Meanwhile, the CTO-based coating layer effectively blocks interfacial side reactions and enables a homogeneous ionic flux. This work opens a new avenue for developing multivalent metal batteries.

A cost-effective and highly efficient electrolyte with a wide electrochemical window, high reversibility of Mg plating/stripping, non-/low-corrosivity, good compatibility with cathode materials, and tolerance of trace water and impurity is crucial for the commercialization of rechargeable magnesium batteries. In this work, a novel boron-centered non-nucleophilic electrolyte that meets all the above requirements is prepared via a facile and economic approach from the raw materials B(TFE)3/MgCl2/CrCl3/Mg (BMCM). The as-prepared BMCM electrolyte is mainly composed of tetracoordinated anions [B(TFE)4]− and solvated cations [Mg2(μ-Cl)2(DME)4]2+. The BMCM electrolyte demonstrates attractive electrochemical performance, with a low overpotential (∼139 mV), a high Coulombic efficiency (∼97%), a high anodic stability (∼3.5 V vs Mg/Mg2+), and a long-term (more than 500 h) cycling stability. Moreover, BMCM shows good compatibility with the CuS cathode material. The CuS|BMCM|Mg full cell delivers a discharge specific capacity of 231 mAh g–1 (at 56 mA g–1), which can retain ∼88% even after 100 cycles. Importantly, the BMCM electrolyte is cost-effective and tolerant of trace impurity and water, which has great potential to be commercialized. This work is expected to promote the development of practical rechargeable magnesium batteries.

Inherent dendrite growth and side reactions of zinc anode caused by its unstable interface in aqueous electrolytes severely limit the practical applications of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). To overcome these challenges, a protective layer for Zn anode inspired by cytomembrane structure is developed with PVA as framework and silk fibroin gel suspension (SFs) as modifier. This PVA/SFs gel-like layer exerts similar to the solid electrolyte interphase, optimizing the anode-electrolyte interface and Zn 2+ solvation structure. Through interface improvement, controlled Zn 2+ migration/diffusion, and desolvation, this buffer layer effectively inhibits dendrite growth and side reactions. The additional SFs provide functional improvement and better interaction with PVA by abundant functional groups, achieving a robust and durable Zn anode with high reversibility. Thus, the PVA/SFs@Zn symmetric cell exhibits an ultra-long lifespan of 3150 h compared to bare Zn (182 h) at 1.0 mAh cm −2 –1.0 mAh cm −2 , and excellent reversibility with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.04% under a large plating capacity for 800 cycles. Moreover, the PVA/SFs@Zn||PANI/CC full cells maintain over 20 000 cycles with over 80% capacity retention under harsh conditions at 5 and 10 A g −1 . This SF-modified protective layer for Zn anode suggests a promising strategy for reliable and high-performance ZIBs.
