Tough Hydrogel Reinforced by Meta-Aramid Nanofibers for Flexible Sensors

Zhiwen Hou,Yongzheng Li,Donghao Zhang,Cun Peng,Yan Wang,Kunyan Sui

Hydrogels exhibit significant promise for advanced flexible sensing applications owing to their intrinsic softness, biocompatibility, and customizable functionalities. Nevertheless, their limited mechanical strength poses a critical barrier to practical implementation. In this study, we engineered a mechanically robust alginate/chitosan (SA/CS) hydrogel reinforced with meta-aramid (PMIA) nanofibers. The resulting composite hydrogel achieves a tensile strength of 16.8 MPa, substantially exceeding the performance of conventional biomass-derived hydrogels. When employed as a flexible sensor, the hydrogel demonstrates exceptional pressure-sensing capabilities, featuring high sensitivity (178.41 MΩ/MPa below 5 kPa), rapid response kinetics (0.4–0.8 s), and sustained stability (>200 cycles). Leveraging these properties, we successfully monitored vocal cord vibrations and finger motion trajectories, highlighting their potential for biomechanical sensing applications.

Tough double network hydrogels with rapid self-reinforcement and low hysteresis based on highly entangled networks

Zhu Ruixin,Zhu Dandan,Zheng Zhen,Wang Xinling

Most tough hydrogels are reinforced by introducing energy dissipation mechanisms, but simultaneously realizing a high toughness and low hysteresis is challenging because the energy dissipation structure cannot recover rapidly. In this work, high mechanical performance highly entangled double network hydrogels without energy dissipation structure are fabricated, in which physical entanglements act as the primary effective crosslinking in the first network. This sliding entanglement structure allows the hydrogel network to form a highly uniform oriented structure during stretching, resulting in a high tensile strength of ~3 MPa, a fracture energy of 8340 J m −2 and a strain-stiffening capability of 47.5 in 90% water content. Moreover, almost 100% reversibility is obtained in this hydrogel via energy storage based on entropy loss. The highly entangled double network structure not only overcomes the typical trade-off between the high toughness and low hysteresis of hydrogels, but more importantly, it provides an insight into the application of entanglement structures in high-performance hydrogels.

Photocurable 3D printing high-strength gels for flexible wearable devices and surgical models

Huijie Li,Jian An,Qingbo Bao,Youjie Rong,Jianhua Fei,Xiaomin Zhang,Xiaobo Huang

Hydrogels are considered to be ideal materials for the preparation of preoperative models and flexible wearable devices due to their softness and plasticity. However, there are still some problems in their application, such as how to achieve the construction of complex spatial structures through 3D printing and poor mechanical properties of the gel, especially poor tear resistance will greatly shorten the service life of hydrogels. In this study, with acrylamide (AM), stearyl methacrylate (SMA) and Multi-arm Crosslinking Agent (AGE-M) as the main raw materials, we provided a tear-resistance gel that can be photocurable for 3D printing. Through digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing, various gel-based preoperative models and devices with complex structures can be prepared. More importantly, the printed gel is endowed with excellent tear resistance by introducing the AGE-M as a nanoscale high-functionality crosslinker. In addition, the conductive substance sodium chloride is introduced to make the gel have a certain conductivity, and the organic solvent glycerol is introduced to replace part of the water to form a binary phase organic solvent, which endows the gel with excellent anti-drying and anti-freezing properties, to be suitable for more environments. Therefore, this work proposes a tear-resistance gel processed by DLP-based 3D printing technology, which can be used for the personalized manufacturing of organ models and flexible wearable devices, and is expected to be used in surgical training and artificial intelligence.

Preparation and characterization of double macromolecular network (DMMN) hydrogels based on hyaluronan and high molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol)

Changjiang Fan,Chao Zhang,Liqiong Liao,Sheng Li,Weiping Gan,Jinping Zhou,Dong-An Wang,Lijian Liu

Abundant research efforts have been devoted to meet the demands for high-strength hydrogels in biomedical applications. Double-network (DN) hydrogels and homogeneous hydrogels are two typical samples. In this study, a novel ultra-strong and resilient double macromolecular network (DMMN) hydrogel system has been developed via a two-step sequential cross-linking process using hyaluronan (HA) and high molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) for the first and second network, respectively. A lower concentration of the HA precursor solution and a higher concentration of the PEG precursor solution as well as a higher molecular weight of the PEG precursor are beneficial to produce high-strength DMMN gels. Dynamic light scattering measurements demonstrate that DMMN gels possess the more evenly distributed polymer networks; the distinctive double and relatively evenly distributed networks of the DMMN gel make it combine the current DN and homogeneous network strategies for preparing robust hydrogels. The optimized DMMN gel is capable of sustaining up to 50 MPa of compressive stress. Besides, DMMN gels exhibit excellent cytocompatibility. This study expands the DN principle in designing and fabricating high-strength hydrogels with biocompatible macromolecules that show a promising prospect for biomedical applications.

Hydrogen-bonding reinforced robust hydrogels for load-bearing and sustained lubrication

Ruiyao Ma,Yanru Liu,Huijuan Lin,Ling-Bao Xing,Hui Liu,Shuanhong Ma,Feng Zhou

The creation of bionic hydrogel characterized by optimal friction and load-bearing is essential for implantable artificial materials. High-stiffness and robust poly (methylacrylamide and methacrylic acid) hydrogels (P(MAAm-MAAc)) were synthesized using intensive cross-linking and intermolecular/intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Subsequently, an embedded lubricating layer was developed on the robust base, which formed layered structure similar to articular cartilage. It possesses distinctive mechanical characteristics (tensile strength: 3.9–4.4 MPa; elastic modulus: 27.8–38.6 MPa), along with superior lubricating and load-bearing capabilities. When water served as lubricant, the hydrogels exhibited low friction coefficient (COF ∼ 0.039), negligible wear, and sustained endurance over 18,000 sliding cycles. This high-stiffness and robust multilayer hydrogel possesses extensive application potential in bionic articular cartilage, medical devices, and other domains.

High strength hydrogels with multiple shape-memory ability based on hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions

Houchao Jing,Lin He,Jinyang Feng,Hai Fu,Shuang Guan,Peipei Guo

Hydrogels with multiple shape-memory ability have aroused great interest due to their promising applications in various fields. Nevertheless, the weak mechanical performance of most shape-memory hydrogels seriously impedes the practical application in more complex environments. Herein, we reported a novel hydrogel with both high mechanical and multi-shape memory properties composed of stearyl methacrylate (SMA), acrylic acid (AA) and quaternary chitosan (QCH). The electrostatic interactions between AA and QCH together with the hydrophobic interactions of alkyl chains in SMA endowed the hydrogel with great strain–stress and fatigue resistance. Furthermore, due to the reversible destruction and construction of physical cross-links, the prepared hydrogels also exhibited the shape-memory ability in response to different stimuli, such as temperature, pH and NaCl solution. Additionally, the multiple shape-memory effect could be accomplished via programmable combination because of the relatively independent physical interactions in the hydrogels.

An ultratough, stretchable and thermo-responsive hydrogel for dynamic information encryption-decryption and high-fidelity seafood freshness monitoring

Zhouwei Tan,Zhipeng Liang,Xiaowen Xu

While food safety, including spoilage and adulteration, concerns millions, developing a system to address both challenges is challenging. We present a mechanically robust, thermally responsive hydrogel with dual modes for advanced information encryption and smart food freshness monitoring. Composed of a poly(acrylamide -co- 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) network and a calcium alginate network, the hydrogel exhibits impressive mechanical properties, including a breaking elongation of 1402 % and toughness of 249.8 kJ/m 3 , far surpassing existing hydrogel indicators which typically exhibit < 800 % strain and < 100 kJ/m 3 toughness. It also shows excellent fatigue, tearing resistance, and repeatable adhesiveness, withstanding 10 cycles of loading-unloading and achieving tearing energy of 1.12 kJ/m 2 , outperforming current hydrogel indicators, exhibiting tearing energy of < 0.5 kJ/m 2 . The hydrogel features a tunable lower critical solution temperature from 31 °C to 43 °C by adjusting acrylamide content, enabling dynamic thermo-responsive opacity transitions. This property allows it to serve as an anti-counterfeiting platform where information can be hidden or revealed with temperature changes. By integrating the pH-sensitive dye curcumin, the hydrogel effectively monitors food freshness, with strong correlation to TVB-N levels (R² > 0.937), outperforming current polymer film indicators (R² < 0.70). This work introduces a superior hydrogel system that combines advanced anti-counterfeiting and intelligent packaging, enhancing supply chain integrity and consumer safety.

Dual-Ion Synergy Achieves Megapascal Strength and High Conductivity in Wearable Hydrogel Sensors

XinYi Tian,BoLin Fan,BoHao Wang,Yajuan Li,YaJun Zhang,XuDong Yu

As three-dimensional crosslinked polymer networks with high water content, conductive hydrogels show great potential for applications in flexible wearable electronics, health monitoring, and related fields, owing to their biocompatibility, stretchability, self-healing capability, and tactile sensing performance. However, conventional hydrogels often suffer from limited mechanical strength and low ionic conductivity, highlighting the need to develop hydrogel-based sensors that combine high toughness, sensitivity, and excellent electrical performance. In this work, we developed a dual-ion-regulated double-network hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium acrylate, acrylic acid, MTAC, and lithium chloride via a facile one-pot method. By introducing dual cations (Na + and Li + ), we established electrostatic interactions and coordination bonds within the network, which—together with dynamically reversible hydrogen bonds—resulted in a crosslinked structure that provides outstanding mechanical and conductive properties. This dual-cation (Na + /Li + ) regulation strategy synergistically enhanced the hydrogel’s elongation at break (1001%), tensile strength (1.2 MPa), and toughness (7.24 MJ/m 3 ), while also achieving high electrical conductivity (8.4 mS/cm) and excellent sensing sensitivity (gauge factor = 6.44). As a strain sensor, the hydrogel effectively monitors both large-scale and subtle human motions, including limb movements, pulse, and facial expressions, demonstrating its strong potential for health monitoring and human–machine interfaces.

An Alkaline Based Method for Generating Crystalline, Strong, and Shape Memory Polyvinyl Alcohol Biomaterials

Mohammad Ali Darabi,Ali Khosrozadeh,Ying Wang,Nureddin Ashammakhi,Halima Alem,Ahmet Erdem,Qiang Chang,Kaige Xu,Yuqing Liu,Gaoxing Luo,Ali Khademhosseini,Malcolm Xing

Strong, stretchable, and durable biomaterials with shape memory properties can be useful in different biomedical devices, tissue engineering, and soft robotics. However, it is challenging to combine these features. Semi-crystalline polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been used to make hydrogels by conventional methods such as freeze–thaw and chemical crosslinking, but it is formidable to produce strong materials with adjustable properties. Herein, a method to induce crystallinity and produce physically crosslinked PVA hydrogels via applying high-concentration sodium hydroxide into dense PVA polymer is introduced. Such a strategy enables the production of physically crosslinked PVA biomaterial with high mechanical properties, low water content, resistance to injury, and shape memory properties. It is also found that the developed PVA hydrogel can recover 90% of plastic deformation due to extension upon supplying water, providing a strong contraction force sufficiently to lift objects 1100 times more than their weight. Cytocompatibility, antifouling property, hemocompatibility, and biocompatibility are also demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. The fabrication methods of PVA-based catheters, injectable electronics, and microfluidic devices are demonstrated. This gelation approach enables both layer-by-layer and 3D printing fabrications.

A dual crosslinking strategy to fabricate hemicellulose-based tough hydrogels for flexible sensors and triboelectric nanogenerator applications

Lihui Zhao,Lili Dai,Hongna Yu,Daihui Zhang,Chenhuan Lai,Yupeng Liu

Conductive hydrogels have emerged as auspicious materials for applications in flexible sensors and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Nevertheless, enhancing mechanical robustness, adhesive properties, electrochemical performance, and signal stability under extreme strain conditions remains a significant challenge, particularly for specialized sensor applications and energy harvesting through TENGs. Herein, we report the synthesis of double cross-linked network conductive hydrogels employing divinylbenzene‑sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles and esterified hemicellulose as cross-linking agents, in conjunction with MXene as the conductive filler. The synthesized hydrogels demonstrated exceptional super-stretchability (4844 %), robust self-adhesive properties (12.3 KPa on pigskin), high sensitivity (GF = 2.36, pressure sensitivity = 0.59 KPa −1 ), superior electrical conductivity (1.93 mS/cm), and a broad and stable sensing range (tensile range: 0–1500 %, compressive range: 0–0.3 MPa). Owing to the hydrogel's rapid and stable signal responsiveness, it exhibits significant potential for applications in human motion detection and specialized signal recognition. Additionally, the assembled TENGs demonstrated outstanding energy harvesting performance. This research provides novel insights into fabricating flexible sensors and TENG hydrogels with superior mechanical, adhesive, and electrochemical properties.

Multi-responsive, tough and reversible hydrogels with tunable swelling property

Man Zhang,Rui Wang,Zhenqiang Shi,Xuelian Huang,Weifeng Zhao,Changsheng Zhao

A novel family of multi-responsive, tough, and reversible hydrogels were prepared by the combination of dipole-dipole interaction, hydrogen bonding interaction and slightly chemical cross-linking, using monomers of acrylonitrile, sodium allylsulfonate and itaconic acid. Reversible gel-sol transition was achieved by the flexible conversion of the dipole-dipole interactions between acrylonitrile-acrylonitrile and acrylonitrile-sodium thiocyanate, and the hydrogels could freely form desired shapes. The dipole-dipole and hydrogen bonding interactions improved the mechanical strength of the hydrogels with a compressive stress of 2.38   MPa. Meanwhile, the hydrogels sustained cyclic compressive tests with 60% strain, and exhibited excellent elastic property. The hydrogels were sensitive to pH and ionic strength, and could keep their perfect spherical structures without any obvious cracks even after immersing in strong ionic strength (or pH) solution for several reversible cycles. Furthermore, the hydrogels were recycled for environmental pollution remediation, and showed great potential to be applied in water treatments and other related fields.

Ultrathin and Highly Tough Hydrogel Films for Multifunctional Strain Sensors

Qian Zhang,Qian Wang,Guangyu Wang,Zilu Zhang,Shan Xia,Guanghui Gao

With good flexibility and biocompatibility, hydrogel-based sensors have been widely used in human motion detection, artificial intelligence, human–machine interface, and other fields. Previous research on hydrogel-based sensors has focused on improving the mechanical properties and signal transmission sensitivity. With the development of human smart devices, there is an increasing demand for hydrogel sensor comfort and more application functions, such as ultrathin structures and recognition functions for contact surfaces, which are realized with higher requirements for the thickness, flexibility, friction resistance, and biocompatibility of hydrogels. Inspired by the ultrathin and flexible characteristics of human organ biofilms, we constructed conductive hydrogel films by using the flim-casting and glycerol–H2O secondary hydration methods. This ultrathin structure enables the hydrogel films to have a high elongation at break of 523.3%, a stress of 3.5 MPa, and a good friction resistance. Combined with the excellent sensing properties (gauge factor = 2.1 and a response time of 200 ms), the hydrogel film-based sensor can not only record human motion signals but also recognize the surface texture and roughness of objects, such as glass, brushes, wood, and sandpaper with mesh sizes of 80, 50, and 24, accurately. In addition, this hydrogel film has a series of excellent properties such as UV shielding, antiswelling ability, and good biocompatibility. This research provides a novel way for the development of emerging soft-material smart devices, such as hydrogel-based electronic skin and soft robots.
