Cryogenic origin of fractionation between perchlorate and chloride under modern martian climate

Li Dongdong,Zhao Yu-Yan Sara,Meslin Pierre-Yves,Vals Margaux,Forget François,Wu Zhongchen

The high perchlorate (ClO 4 − ) to chloride (Cl − ) ratios observed at the Phoenix landing site, northern polar region of Mars, have been puzzling since detection. However, a lack of understanding of perchlorate-chloride-water systems under cryogenic conditions makes it difficult to assess ClO 4 − /Cl − ratios during deliquescence-related processes. Here we quantitatively evaluate ClO 4 − /Cl − fractionation in deliquescence-induced brines of magnesium- and calcium-perchlorate-chloride salt mixtures under subzero conditions, by measuring solubility data and constructing temperature-dependent thermodynamic models. We find that under specific relative humidity (RH) and temperature ( T ) conditions, deliquescence of perchlorate-chloride mixtures may form brines with fractionated ClO 4 − /Cl − signatures. Appropriate RH -T , water-limited conditions, and aeolian processes are required to produce and preserve the elevated ClO 4 − /Cl − signatures in soils. Under the present climate, the north polar region can support ClO 4 − /Cl − fractionation and potentially enrich perchlorate for longer periods on global Mars. This highlights the uniqueness of Mars’ arctic environment and its implications for modern habitability.

Acute exposure of perchlorate on zebrafish larvae: Neurotoxicity during development

Xiaoran Xue,Zaiqiu Zhang,Yang Yang,Lin Hu,Mingyi Zhao,Qingnan He

Objective This study aimed to assess the acute developmental toxicity of perchlorate exposure and identify its manifestation of neurotoxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) model. Methods Zebrafish larvae were exposed to sodium perchlorate at early developmental stages and the phenotypes of various developmental abnormalities were observed and recorded. Neurodevelopmental toxicity has been studied in particular in terms of central nervous system apoptosis, peripheral motor abnormalities, and abnormal autonomic motor behavior. Samples were processed for pathological, transcriptomic, and PCR analyses. Results Acute exposure of zebrafish larvae to perchlorate resulted in developmental toxicity in a concentration-dependent manner. Heart rate abnormality (33 %), slow blood flow (37 %), abnormal size of liver (23 %), delayed yolk absorption (70 %), and abnormal body pigmentation (100 %) were observed in the 3.83 mg/mL group. Heart edema (10 %), heart rate abnormality (60 %), slow blood flow (67 %), abnormal size of liver (77 %), delayed yolk absorption (100 %), abnormalities in intestinal morphology (30 %), abnormal body pigmentation (100 %), and shorter body length (47 %) were observed in the 4.03 mg/mL group. Developmental neurotoxicity was characterized by brain apoptosis, damage to the central nervous system ( P  < 0.01) and peripheral motor neurons ( P  < 0.0001), and reduced autonomous motor distance ( P  < 0.01). Transcriptomic analysis revealed that c3a.1, c5, fga, fgb, and fgg were upregulated in the complement and coagulation cascades, and the mRNA levels of c3a.1, dusp1, slc2a6, purba, and klf9 were found upregulated in PCR. Conclusion Acute perchlorate exposure on zebrafish larvae caused various developmental toxicity in a concentration-dependent manner, notably neurotoxicity. We believed the immunological and inflammatory responses were involved.

Highly Selective Removal of Perchlorate from Water: Roles of Unconventional Hydrogen Bond and Hydrophobic Cavity

Jian Ao,Lingjun Bu,Yangtao Wu,Jinming Luo,Shiqing Zhou

Selective perchlorate removal from surface water is a pressing need due to the stringent perchlorate drinking water limits around the world. Herein, we anchored N + –C–H hydrogen bond donors in hydrophobic cavities via interactions of cationic surfactants with montmorillonite to prioritize perchlorate bonding. The prepared adsorbent exhibited high selectivity over commonly occurring competing anions, including SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , PO 4 3− , HCO 3 − , and halide anions. High adsorption capacity, fast adsorption kinetics, and excellent regeneration ability (removal efficiency ≥ 80% after 20 cycles) were confirmed via batch experiments. Unconventional CH···O hydrogen bonding was verified as the primary driving force for perchlorate adsorption, which relies on the higher bond energy (∼80 kcal·mol −1 ) than conventional bonding. The removal efficiency of anions followed the order of the Hofmeister Series, demonstrating the importance of hydrophobic cavities formed by the tail groups of cationic surfactants. The hydrophobic cavities sheltered the C–H bonds from interacting with anions of low hydration energy (e.g., perchlorate). Furthermore, a fixed-bed column test demonstrated that about 2900 bed volumes of the feeding streams (∼500 μg L −1 ) can be treated to ≤ 70 μg L −1 , with an enrichment factor of 10.3. Overall, on the basis of the hydrophobicity-induced hydrogen bonding mechanism, a series of low-cost adsorbents can be synthesized and applied for specific perchlorate removal.

Rapid analysis and risk assessment of perchlorate in wild edible mushrooms from Yunnan, China

Zhixin Fei,Hang Zhang,Qing Song,Mingyue Sun,Chengxi Li,Min Liu

Ubiquitous perchlorate contamination has become an important food safety issue related to human health, but contamination characteristics and health risks of perchlorate in wild edible mushrooms remain unclear. In this study, a method based on dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) clean-up procedure combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was established for the rapid analysis of perchlorate in wild edible mushrooms. Sample pretreatment was achieved by acetonitrile extraction followed by clean-up with florisil and graphitized carbon black (GCB). The proposed method presented satisfactory linearity, accuracy, precision, negligible matrix effects, and low limit of detection (LOD) (0.15 µg/kg) and limit of quantification (LOQ) (0.5 µg/kg). The recoveries at four levels (0.5, 3, 30 and 300 µg/kg) were 93.1–108.7% with relative standard deviation ranging from 2.9% to 18.2% for mushroom samples. The validated methodology was successfully applied to detect 109 wild edible mushroom samples belonging to 8 species collected from Yunnan, China, and 95.41% of the samples were found to have detectable perchlorate contamination. Concentrations of perchlorate ranged from below LOD to 29.81 μg/kg, with a mean value of 4.11 μg/kg. The risk assessment results for perchlorate in wild edible mushrooms showed no health risks to consumers.

Poly (ionic liquid) anchored granular activated carbon for efficient and selective removal of perchlorate: performance, DFT calculations and mechanism

Pin Hou,Xinyu Sun,Jianhui Guo,Chunrong Wang,Cesar Nieto-Delgado,Jianbing Wang

The study developed a novel adsorbent for improving perchlorate removal efficiency by anchoring Poly (ionic liquid) (PIL) onto granular activated carbons (GACs) via radical polymerization. The authors characterized the physical–chemical properties of GAC modified by PIL (PIL-GAC), and investigated its performance and mechanism for perchlorate adsorption. The results show that the introduction of dicationic ionic liquids dramatically increases the positively charged nitrogen (12.59 %) and point of zero charge (pH pzc  = 9.79) of GAC, resulting in a higher attraction for perchlorate. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal a better adsorption energy (−162.58 kJ/mol) of perchlorate on imidazole N, highlighting its potential selectivity over other N and O functional groups. PIL-GAC exhibits a maximum adsorption capacity (Q m ) of 300.05 mg/g at 25 °C, which is 12 times higher than that of pristine GAC and better than previously reported adsorbents. Additionally, this Q m is pH independent within pH 4 to 10. The perchlorate adsorption on PIL-GAC fits the Langmuir (R 2  ≥ 0.98) and pseudo second order kinetic (R 2  > 0.99) models, indicating a spontaneous process primarily driven by chemisorption. Remarkably, PIL-GAC also exhibits sustainable regeneration and greater selectivity for perchlorate with a lower hydration energy (−214 kJ/mol), over nitrate, chloride, and sulfate with higher hydration energy (−306, −347, and −1090 kJ/mol). After adsorption, PIL-GAC demonstrates a decrease of N + and an increase in Cl - , indicating that perchlorate adsorption of PIL-GAC mainly involves electrostatic interaction and ion exchange. Therefore, this study offers a promising method for efficient and selective removal of perchlorate from water.

Modified micro-graphite catalysed biodegradation of perchlorate and the analysis of community changes

Zhaozhou Peng,Xing Geng,Tongxin Zhang,Junzhang Li

This study investigates the effectiveness of modified micrometer graphite (MMG) in enhancing the biodegradation of perchlorate in sludge. Different MMG types, specifically GO205, GO003, ATGO205, and ATGO003, were evaluated for their impact on perchlorate degradation rates. The results showed a significant acceleration in perchlorate reduction, particularly with the MMG variant GO205, which achieved complete degradation within 48 hours, marking a six-fold increase compared to controls. This rapid degradation also correlated with enhanced microbial activity, as indicated by increased cytochrome C concentrations and electron transport system activity, suggesting a boost in overall microbial metabolic functions. Additionally, shifts in the microbial community composition were observed, with a notable increase in perchlorate-reducing bacteria populations. The study highlights MMG's potential to improve perchlorate remediation processes efficiently and offers promising insights into its application in treating perchlorate-contaminated environments.

A functionalised interface for controllable decomposition of ammonium perchlorate by a self-assembly method

Haiyang Yu,Lei Huang,Yaohua Liu,Chunhua Liu,Chen Chen,Xing Zhou

A functionalised interface construction strategy was developed by coating an ammonium perchlorate (AP) surface with quaternary ammonium cation surfactants using a self-assembly method. The functionalised interface transforms AP decomposition from high temperature decomposition into low temperature decomposition, and provides pressure-sensitive control over the mass ratio of AP decomposition in the two stages. Further study using molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory reveal that the functionalised interface hinders the adsorption of NH 3 molecules and promote the adsorption and decomposition of ClO 4 on the AP surface, all of which could contribute to controlling AP decomposition.

Simultaneously ammonium and perchlorate remove via the partial nitrification-anammox coupled sulfur autotrophic system

Guiying Zhang,Jingmei Liu,Yi Han,Liang Xia,Jianbing Zhang,Jianbo Guo,Haibo Li,Yanan Hou,Yuanyuan Song

In this study, partial nitrification-anammox coupled sulfur autotrophic (PNA-SA) system was constructed for removing ammonium and perchlorate from composite wastewater simultaneously. The removal rates of ammonium and perchlorate could reach 94.2% and 93.1%, respectively, at an ammonium concentration of 60 mg N∙L −1 and a perchlorate concentration of 30 mg N∙L −1 . Ammonium was mainly removed by anammox bacteria (AnAOB) in PNA reactor, while perchlorate removal was attributed to perchlorate reducing bacteria (PRB) in SA reactor. Furthermore, combined with Pearson analysis, N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs)-mediated quorum sensing regulated the production of TB-EPS, improving biofilm stability and thus ensuring the removal performance of reactors. 16sRNA gene sequencing results indicated that the key functional bacteria in the PNA reactor were Comamonas and Candidatus Kuenenia , and the key functional bacteria in the SA reactor were Sulfurimonas , Thiobacillus , and Defluviimonas . These key functional bacteria ensured PNA-SA system feasibility and stability. Such results indicated that PNA-SA system could be used to treat ammonium and perchlorate composite wastewater, thereby providing a new strategy for removing such composite wastewater.
