Membranes are the dominant material for seawater desalination and clean-water harvesting, which are commonly composed of synthetic polymers, showing low hydrophilicity and environmental hazard. Herein, we developed a low-cost, intrinsically green, superhigh-water flux Janus cellulose membrane (CEM) via a facile cellulase etching strategy. Coating cellulase on the single surface of cellulose membrane (such as top surface), triggers effective etching on its top section rather than bottom section, which architects an asymmetric-pore structure of the Janus CEM including porous top-and dense bottom-layer. Such distinction endows the Janus CEM with an unprecedented high-water flux of 135.75 LMH and a low salt-water ratio of 0.29 g·L −1 for 1 M NaCl solution, which is 17-time higher and 62-time lower than that of the pristine CEM. Our Janus CEM enables a promising participant for the advanced membrane materials toward versatile separation engineering .

Loose nanofiltration (LNF) membrane with exclusively high dye rejection and inorganic salt permeation are remarkable method to treatment dye/salt wastewater for the achievement of zero liquid discharge. Herein, a long molecule bis-tris propane with amines and hydroxyl groups was firstly chosen as aqueous monomer in interfacial polymerization to fabricate a novel polyester-amide LNF membrane. Noteworthily, the investigation of morphology characterization and preparation conditions revealed that the size of molecule was a vital influence factor for the formation mechanism of unique loose structure of LNF made by long molecule. A new insight about the size of long molecule to form ultrathin thickness of self-repression layer on the formation mechanism of LNF was proposed in this work to replenish the previous theory. A series of characterization verified that the polyester-amide layer is negatively charged and hydrophilic due to the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on the surface. Meanwhile, the tailored 0.3-LNF exhibited high water permeability (114.9 L m −2 h −1 ), dye rejection (98.83% RB 5) and low salt rejection (11.72% NaCl) under 0.5 MPa, which displayed good performance for the fractionation of dye/salt mixtures. In addition, the polyester-amide LNF membrane possesses a superior antifouling and stability performance.

Water-purification membranes with high water flux, excellent recycling ability, good anti-fouling property, wide range for different oil/water emulsions separation, and strong water-soluble dyes removal ability are highly desirable for water purification but still a challenge to be realized. In this work, we show a simple method to address this challenge, in which halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have been decorated on the poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane surface through one-pot method via the aid of KH550 and dopamine. The [email protected] composite membrane exhibits superhydrophilic and under-water superoleophobic performance. In addition, our membrane can separate wide oil/water emulsions (including surfactant-stabilized and surfactant-free emulsions) from wastewater with high efficiency (>99.65%), outstanding recycle ability with good flux recovery rate (FRR > 95%) and good anti-fouling performance (the underwater oil contact angle (OCA) is 155.8 ± 1.8° with low oil adhesion) and high water flux (7994 ± 150 L m −2 h -1 ). Interestingly, our membrane also removes different water-soluble dyes (e.g., Congo red, methylene blue, and rhodamine B) from waste water by simply filtering. Those outstanding properties make our membrane hold great potential applications in real-world water purification and environmental protection.

Oily sewage caused by oil spill accidents has become a severe problem in the last decades. Hence, two-dimensional sheet-like filter materials for oil/water separation have received widespread attention. Porous sponge materials were developed using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as raw materials. They are environmentally friendly and easy to prepare, with high flux and separation efficiency. The 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic acid cross-linked anisotropic cellulose nanocrystalline sponge sheet (B-CNC) exhibited ultrahigh water fluxes driven by gravity alone, depending on the aligned structure of channels and the rigidity of CNCs. Meanwhile, the sponge gained superhydrophilic/underwater superhydrophobic wettability with an underwater oil contact angle of up to 165.7° due to its ordered micro/nanoscale structure. B-CNC sheets displayed high oil/water selectivity without additional material doping or chemical modification. For oil/water mixtures, high separation fluxes of approximately 100,000 L·m −2 ·h −1 and separation efficiencies of up to 99.99 % were obtained. For a Tween 80-stabilized toluene-in-water emulsion, the flux reached >50,000 L·m −2 ·h −1 , and the separation efficiency was above 99.7 %. B-CNC sponge sheets showed significantly higher fluxes and separation efficiencies than other bio-based two-dimensional materials. This research provides a facile and straightforward fabrication method of environmental-friendly B-CNC sponges for rapid, selective oil/water separation.
