Combating infections from drug-resistant bacteria: Unleashing synergistic broad-spectrum antibacterial power with high-entropy MXene/CDs

Panyong Wang,Qiannan You,Yulu Liu,Huimin Miao,Wen-Fei Dong,Li Li

The growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics has posed challenges in treating associated bacterial infections, while the development of multi-model antibacterial strategies could efficient sterilization to prevent drug resistance. High-entropy MXene has emerged as a promising candidate for antibacterial synergy with inherent photothermal and photodynamic properties. Herein, a high-entropy nanomaterial of MXene/CDs was synthesized to amplify oxidative stress under near-infrared laser irradiation. Well-exfoliated MXene nanosheets have proven to show an excellent photothermal effect for sterilization. The incorporation of CDs could provide photo-generated electrons for MXene nanosheets to generate ROS, meanwhile reducing the recombination of electron-hole pairs to further accelerate the generation of photo-generated electrons. The MXene/CDs material demonstrates outstanding synergistic photothermal and photodynamic effects, possesses excellent biocompatibility and successfully eliminates drug-resistant bacteria as well as inhibits biofilm formation. While attaining a remarkable killing efficiency of up to 99.99% against drug-resistant Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , it also demonstrates outstanding antibacterial effects against four additional bacterial strains. This work not only establishes a synthesis precedent for preparing high-entropy MXene materials with CDs but also provides a potential approach for addressing the issue of drug-resistant bacterial infections.

High-entropy TiVNbMoC3Tx MXene hybrid with balanced dielectric-magnetic loss for high-efficient electromagnetic wave absorption with environmental stability

Yongpeng Wu,Chaolong Chen,Fei Pan,Xiang Li,Wei Lu

With the advent of the 5G era, there is a growing demand for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers that offer both efficient absorption and improved environmental stability. Transition metal carbides/carbonitrides (MXene), with their atomic-layered structures and high electrical conductivity, offer substantial potential for crafting efficient electromagnetic functional materials. Yet, enhancing the antioxidant capabilities and addressing the poor loss mechanisms of traditional MXene absorbers remain challenging tasks. In this context, a TiVNbMoC 3 T x high-entropy MXene (HE-MXene) and its magnetic hybrids were synthesized for the first time. The unique multicomponent structure of high-entropy MXene reduces grain boundary formation, thereby slowing the progression of oxidation reactions. The incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles induces interface polarization loss or strong magnetic coupling, thereby enhancing EMW attenuation. These magnetic HE-MXene hybrids demonstrated a minimum reflection loss of −57.59 dB at a matching thickness of 1.46 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.72 GHz at a thickness of 1.53 mm. Furthermore, the magnetic hybrids also exhibited outstanding oxidation and electrochemical corrosion resistance. This research provides valuable theoretical insights for the development of electromagnetic composites within high entropy (HE) systems, showcasing significant potential for long-term applications.

A novel high-entropy TiVCrMoC3Tx assisted LDI MS for serum metabolic fingerprint in rheumatoid arthritis

Zhilong Chu,Xi Yu,Xiao Wang,Wenqiang Zhang,Yuming Li,Xinfeng Yan,Weining Yan,Hongzheng Meng,Lingyu Li,Guanhua Zhang,Ruya Wang,Miaomiao Li,Jun Li,Weiqiang Liang,Chunxia Ma

Worldwide, rheumatoid diseases account for approximately 37.57/100,000 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can effectively reduce associated risks and improve quality of life. To achieve this, accurate and rapid advanced tools are required. Herein, TiVCrMoC 3 , a novel high-entropy two-dimensional (2D) carbide MXene that exhibits excellent electrical conductivity, is prepared and applied to surface-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) analysis for the first time. TiVCrMoC 3 demonstrates superior performance in small-molecule detection compared with typical inorganic and organic substrates. Moreover, its exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity (limit of detection (LOD) at the 10 pg/mL level), excellent repeatability (coefficient of variation (CV) <4%), excellent quantitative detection capability (coefficient of determination = 0.99987), clean background, and broad analyte coverage. Results showed that TiVCrMoC 3 -assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) is efficient in screening RA diseases, with the advantages of high throughput and low cost. It enables accurate and quantitative analysis of various low-concentration metabolites in 1 μL of biological fluid within seconds. Combined with machine learning, TiVCrMoC 3 -assisted LDI-MS is used to accurately diagnose multiple RA samples. A total of 8 potential different small-molecule metabolites between individuals with osteoarthritis (OA) and RA were identified based on relative quantification methods, and their associated metabolic changes were discussed. TiVCrMoC 3 -assisted LDI-MS provides a potential tool for the rapid diagnosis of RA and may pave the way for precision medicine.

NIR-II-amplify high-entropy MXene-based sonosensitizer as sonodynamic therapy promotes methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus–Infected wound healing

Wei Song,Danyan Wang,Shuai Xiao,Xiaojun He,Wei Xiong,Jianliang Shen

The growing pace of two-dimensional (2D) transitional metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) has become a spotlight for recent research. Similarly, the need to close the gap left by conventional antibiotics, fighting off bacterial infections, and drug resistance has become eminent. Especially, MXenes are widely used as excellent photothermal agents. However, there are limited reports on MXenes as sonosensitizer. Herein, a high-entropy MXene (HEM), TVNMC was fabricated for the generation of reactive oxide species (ROS) against Methicillin-resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Interestingly the energy storage and conversion from the diverse composition of the TVNMC MXenes allowed the generation of ROS under US irradiation and even enhanced under Photothermal therapy. This combinatorial therapy undertook a near-total kill and eradication of MRSA with its biofilm. Moreover, TVNMC MXene simultaneously eliminated MRSA abscesses while promoting wound healing with negligible anomaly to murine tissues under sonodynamic and photothermal therapy, making the TVNMC MXene a promising sonosensitizer for possible biomedical usage. Overall, this system provides great potential for the use of high-entropy MXenes as a new type of sonosensitizer in anti-infection therapy.
