Tris (trimethylsilyl) phosphate (TMSP) and tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate (TTFP) was added to carbonate solvent-based electrolytes as dual-additives to enhance the performance of LiNi 0·5 Mn 1·5 O 4 (LNMO). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that both TMSP with high oxidation ability and TTFP with high oxidation resistance participated in the formation of cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) films. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the constructed CEI films had excellent electronic insulation and ionic conductivity , reducing the interfacial impedance of the LNMO electrode, and improving the electrochemical performance of LNMO/Li half-cells and LNMO/Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 full-cells. As measured by the nuclear magnetic resonance , the incorporation of TMSP and TTFP significantly reduced the HF content in the electrolytes. Therefore, both LNMO/Li half-cells (500 cycles with 95.7% capacity retention) and LNMO/Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 full-cells (200 cycles with 79.9% capacity retention) displayed higher cycling stabilities at 5 C owing to the synergistic effect of TMSP and TTFP. In comparison, capacity retentions of ∼76.5% after 500 cycles and ∼37.2% after 200 cycles were respectively achieved for the LNMO/Li half-cells and LNMO/Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 full-cells with the standard electrolyte at 5 C. This study provides strong evidence that additive combinations can improve the electrochemical performance of high-energy and high-voltage cathode materials .

The structural transformations, oxygen releasing and side reactions with electrolytes on the surface are considered as the main causes of the performance degradation of Li-rich layered oxides (LROs) cathodes in Li-ion batteries. Thus, stabilizing the surfaces of LROs is the key to realize their practical application in high energy density Li-ion batteries. Surface coating is regarded as one of the most effective strategies for high voltage cathodes. The ideal coating materials should prevent cathodes from electrolyte corrosion and possess both electronic and Li-ionic conductivities simultaneously. However, commonly reported coating materials are unable to balance these functions well. Herein, a new type of coating material, La2CuO4 was introduced to mitigate the surface issues of LROs for the first time, due to its superb electronic conductivity (26–35 mS⋅cm−1) and lithium-ionic diffusion coefficient (10−12–10−13 cm2⋅s−1). After coating with the La2CuO4, the capacity retention of Li1.2Ni0.54Co0.13Mn0.13O2 cathode was increased to 85.9% (compared to 79.3% of uncoated cathode) after 150 cycles in the voltage range of 2.0–4.8 V. In addition, only negligible degradations on the deliverable capacity and rate capability were observed.

To solve the major problem of interfacial side reactions between LiMn 1.5 Ni 0.5 O 4 (LMNO) and liquid electrolyte at high voltages, zirconium phosphate (ZrP) wrapped cathode material LMNO@ZrP, with different aspect of ZrP in 2 wt% and 4 wt%, have been prepared by a hydrothermal method. In particular, we focus on the distribution of ZrP on the LMNO surface to find out the optimal coating material and amount. The effects of ZrP coating layer have been investigated by comparison of the properties of the ZrP coated LMNO (LMNO@ZrP) and pristine LMNO electrodes by several electrochemical characterizations. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results show that LMNO@ZrP-3M-2 electrode exhibits an improved electrochemical property of suppressing the impedance increase. In the cell life test, LMNO@ZrP-3M-2 electrode shows a high capacity retention of 94.6% after 200 cycles at 55 °C.

In this study, we successfully synthesized a novel LiCoPO 4 (LCP) nanosheet cathode materials with nitrogen and fluorine co-doped carbon layer (LCP/C–NF) using a solvothermal method and carbonization process in multiple carbon sources including sucrose, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The LCP nanosheets possess a high exposure of (010) crystal planes which shortens the Li + transport path. The N and F co-doped carbon coating layer had more defects and facilitates the formation of Co–N and Co–F bonds at the interface between the carbon coating and LCP, resulting in improved interface stability and suppressed Co element dissolution. LCP/C–NF exhibits excellent discharge capacity of 126.69 mAh g −1 at a current rate of 1 C, with a capacity retention of 98.99% after 200 cycles and 64.94% after 1000 cycles. At a high current density of 10 C, the initial specific capacity is 112.1 mAh g −1 , with a capacity retention of 53.32% after 500 cycles. Additionally, this material maintains high electrochemical activity even at low temperatures of 0 and -15 °C. The N and F co-doped carbon coating method has a strategic significance in the industrial application of high voltage Olivine-type lithium cobalt phosphate cathode materials.

As one of the most promising cathode materials for next-generation energy storage applications, spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) has been highlighted due to many advantages. However, it is still hindered by poor electrochemical stability derived from the bulk/interface structure degradation and side reactions under high working voltage. In this work, fast ion conductor Li3V2(PO4)3 (LVPO) is adopted to modify the surface of spinel LNMO by a one-step facile method to harvest the maximum benefit of interface properties. It is found that 1 wt % LVPO–LNMO exhibits the most excellent cycling performances, retaining great capacity retention of 87.8% after 500 cycles at room temperature and 82.4% for 150 cycles at 55 °C. Moreover, the rate performance is also significantly improved (90.4 mAh g–1 under 20C). It is revealed that the LVPO-involved layer could effectively suppress the surface side reactions under high working voltage, which mainly contributes to an improved interface with desirable structural stability and excellent kinetics behavior without sacrificing the surface electrochemical activity in an electrochemical environment. Thus, the dissolution of transition-metal ions is effectively mitigated, avoiding further structure degradation of the bulk material. Especially, it is also established that the vanadium (V) ions in LVPO could be to a certain extent migrated into the surface lattice of LNMO to generate a V-involved transition layer (Li–Ni–Mn–V–O surface solid solution), which greatly co-contributes to the enhanced electrochemical performances owing to the prominently depressed charge-transfer resistance.

The lack of electrolyte that is stable under high potentials hinders the application of high-voltage cathode materials for lithium batteries; the introduction of electrolyte additives is clearly the most effective solution to address this issue. Herein, we investigated the synergistic effects of trimethyl borate (TMB) in two dual-additive electrolytes on protecting the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 and LiCoO2 cathode materials under high potentials. The interactions of TMB with fluoroethylene carbonate and the catalysis of the decomposition product of TMB to tetramethylene sulfone lower the onset oxidation potential of these additives and are beneficial in forming a stable cathode electrolyte interphase film on the cathode materials. This work sheds light on another way of electrolyte designing for high-voltage cathode materials.

The instability of the electrode–electrolyte interface in high-voltage cathode materials significantly hinders the development of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, 1,3-diphenyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (DTS) is employed as an electrolyte additive to enhance the cycling stability and capacity retention for Li||LLO (Li-rich layered oxide) batteries operating at 4.8 V. Theoretical calculations show that DTS can preferentially oxidize on the surface of the cathode. The oxidation forms a robust cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) on the LLO surface, significantly mitigating cracking, regeneration, and irreversible phase transitions of the LLO cathode. As anticipated, the Li||LLO batteries with the DTS electrolyte exhibit a capacity retention of 85.4% after 100 cycles at 4.8 V compared to the baseline electrolyte (45.2%). Furthermore, these batteries demonstrate superior capacity retention after 100 cycles at 4.8 V, even with the presence of 1000 ppm of H2O.

LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Mg 0.1 O 4 and LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Al 0.1 O 4 was synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion synthesis method at 700 °C in 30 min. Both of the two products are non-stoichiometric and disordered LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 spinels. The two products exhibit similar reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability at 1C rate at room temperature. The initial reversible capacity of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Mg 0.1 O 4 and LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Al 0.1 O 4 are 114 mAh/g and 113 mAh/g, and remain 100.0% and 98.9% after 100 cycles at 1C, respectively. LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Mg 0.1 O 4 shows better rate capability and much better cycling stability at 10C rate than these of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Al 0.1 O 4 . At 10C rate, the capacity retention of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1. 4Mg 0.1 O 4 is near 100% after 100 cycles, but the capacity retention of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Al 0.1 O 4 is only 80%. LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Mg 0.1 O 4 also displays better cycling stability at 55 o C than that of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Al 0.1 O 4 . The excellent electrochemical performance of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.4 Mg 0.1 O 4 is attributed to its higher crystallinity, larger Li + diffusion coefficient and lower charge transfer resistance.

Halide-type solid electrolytes (SEs) have emerged as a new class of promising Li + conductors due to their high ionic conductivity , good deformability and excellent oxidation stability. Nevertheless, to move a step closer to the application in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs), the poor compatibility against metal anode for halide SEs needs to be addressed. Herein, a dual-halogen trigonal SE, Li 2 ZrCl 6- x F x is developed. With the proper incorporation of F, the SE can maintain high ionic conductivity and considerable moisture stability. Moreover, protective-layer-free ASSLBs prepared from the single SE and high-voltage cathode materials LiCoO 2 can be reversibly cycled in the voltage window of 2.52–4.32 V (versus Li + /Li) with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 95.57%, and maintain 76% of the initial capacity after 70 cycles. The good electrochemical performance is originated from the in-situ formed interface protective layer between SE and Li alloy, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and computational characterizations. This work indicates that developing mixed halogen-based SEs is a cost-effective way to improve the stability of halide SEs against alkali metal anode, and could accelerate the application for high-voltage ASSLBs.

Solid-state lithium batteries with solid polymer electrolytes have recently attracted extensive attention due to their promising potential in high energy density and safety. However, the principal issues plaguing the solid polymer electrolytes are their restricted ionic conductivities at ambient temperature and the limited tolerance to the widely used high-voltage cathodes (such as LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2, NCM811), thus limiting their practical applications seriously. In this regard, a superior polymer-in-salt solid electrolyte from poly(caprolactone)-graft-polyrotaxane (PGPE) is developed for high-voltage lithium batteries operated at room temperature. The PGPE displays remarkable electrochemical properties at room temperature, with an exceptional ionic conductivity of 4.89 × 10–4 S cm–1 and a lithium-ion transference number of approximately 0.64, stemming from the rapid segmental motions of PCL sidechains by the enhanced dynamics of the cyclic molecules along the axial polymer chain of polyrotaxane. More importantly, the PGPE demonstrates a high electrochemical oxidation voltage of ∼4.7 V, suggesting the excellent electrochemical stability of PGPE against the NCM811-based cathode. Owing to the dense LiF-rich CEI self-generated on the NCM811 particles in the cathode, the transition metal ion diffusion is successfully constrained and the PGPE is well protected from continuous decomposition. The PGPE also shows superior interfacial stability between the metallic Li and the electrolyte. As a result, the all-solid-state NCM811|PGPE|Li cell exhibits superior discharge capacity (196 mAh g–1) and extraordinary long-term cycling stability (74% capacity retention at 150 cycles) at 30 °C.

A topological structural polymer is designed and synthesized by sequential living polymerization of pinacol vinylboronate and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate using hyperbranched polystyrene as the core. The as-synthesized polymer containing lithium salt is casted onto the ceramic electrostatic spinning film to prepare the composite solid polymer electrolyte . As predicted, the electrolyte shows a high ionic conductivity of 9.63 × 10 −5 S cm −1 at room temperature , which likely due to the creation of conductive network on the surfaces of the nanowires. In addition, introduction of poly(pinacol vinylboronate) segments onto the hyperbranched polymer strongly improves the electrochemical stability (reaches 5.2 V) of the electrolyte in comparison to the one without poly(pinacol vinylboronate) chains. As a result, the LiFeO 4 /Li cell using the electrolyte presents excellent long cycle stability at 50 °C (average discharge capacity of 130 mA h g −1 with coulombic efficiency close to 100% over 800 cycles at 0.5 C) as well as very good cell performance at room temperature (discharge capacity reaches 162 mAh g −1 with average coulombic efficiency of ∼100%). More importantly, we also confirm that the electrolyte can be applied to high-voltage cathode materials , such as LiCoO 2 and Li 1.2 Mn 0.5 Ni 0.2 O 2 -based cathodes, which also shows satisfactory cell performance.
