Due to long-term operation under high voltage, the cathode of lithium metal battery undergoes parasitic reactions with the electrolyte, resulting in non-conductive polymers that severely affect the battery's electrochemical performance and kinetics. In addition, the safety performance of the battery is seriously compromised by severe lithium deposition on the lithium metal side. The use of electrolyte additives is one of the most cost-effective strategies for improvement. A low-cost boron-based additive bis(pinacolato)diboron (BDB) has been proposed in this work which has relatively high activity during battery charging and discharging. A protective cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) film was formed by BDB on the surface of NCM811 in advance to resist HF and solvent erosion. Furthermore, the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film that BDB participates in on the lithium metal surface exhibits high ion conductivity and effectively inhibits the formation of lithium dendrites, thereby ensuring the safe operation of lithium metal batteries. The lithium metal battery utilizing BDB not only exhibits optimal electrochemical performance with a high cut-off voltage of 4.6 V, but also demonstrates potential for further development in the realms of rapid charging and discharging.

Li metal batteries using high-voltage layered oxides cathodes are of particular interest due to their high energy density. However, they suffer from short lifespan and extreme safety concerns, which are attributed to the degradation of layered oxides and the decomposition of electrolyte at high voltage, as well as the high reactivity of metallic Li. The key is the development of stable electrolytes against both high-voltage cathodes and Li with the formation of robust interphase films on the surfaces. Herein, we report a highly fluorinated ether, 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-[(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy) methoxy] ethane (TTME), as a co-solvent, which not only functions as a diluent forming a localized high concentration electrolyte (LHCE), but also participates in the construction of the inner solvation structure. The TTME-based electrolyte is stable itself at high voltage and induces the formation of a unique double-layer solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film, which is embodied as one layer rich in crystalline structural components for enhanced mechanical strength and another amorphous layer with a higher concentration of organic components for enhanced flexibility. The Li||Cu cells display a noticeably high Coulombic efficiency of 99.28% after 300 cycles and Li symmetric cells maintain stable cycling more than 3200 h at 0.5 mA/cm 2 and 1.0 mAh/cm 2 . In addition, lithium metal cells using LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 and LiCoO 2 cathodes (both loadings ∼3.0 mAh/cm 2 ) realize capacity retentions of >85% over 240 cycles with a charge cut-off voltage of 4.4 V and 90% for 170 cycles with a charge cut-off voltage of 4.5 V, respectively. This study offers a bifunctional ether-based electrolyte solvent beneficial for high-voltage Li metal batteries.

Solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is quite an attractive candidate for constructing high-voltage Li metal batteries (LMBs) with high energy density and excellent safety. However, sim ultaneous achievement of high-voltage stability against the cathode and good compatibility with the Li anode remains challenging for the current SPE technology. Herein, a dual-layered solid electrolyte (DLSE) consisting of an oxidation-resistant poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) layer facing a high-potential cathode and a reduction-compatible poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) layer incorporated by Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) nanoparticles and an ionic liquid plasticizer in contact with a Li anode was fabricated. The uniquely designed DLSE holds favorable overall properties in ionic conductivity, Li+ transference number, and mechanical strength. Moreover, the combined advantages of two polymer electrolyte layers greatly address the interface issues on both the cathode and anode. Consequently, the high-voltage LMBs employing the DLSE exhibit excellent room-temperature performances including high rate capacity and long cycle life.

The development of stable electrolytes for high-voltage lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is crucial for advancing battery technology. Diluted high-concentration electrolytes (DHCEs) have shown promise in enhancing interfacial stability, yet challenges persist due to the thermodynamic instability associated with conventional hydrofluoroether diluents and the interphase issues of monofluoroaromatic hydrocarbon diluents under high voltage conditions. In this study, we propose the incorporation of methyl 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,4-nonafluorobutyl ether (CNFE) as an additive to fluorobenzene (FB)-based DHCEs for high-voltage LMBs. CNFE with a molecular structure devoid of β-hydrogen guarantees the thermodynamic stability of FB-based DHCEs compared to conventional hydrofluoroether-based DHCEs. Moreover, CNFE promotes the formation of a LiF-rich and stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI). Consequently, a Li‖LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cell demonstrates a remarkable capacity retention of 84.8% in the 700th cycle at a high cutoff voltage of 4.4 V.

The development of gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) is considered to be an effective strategy to drive practical applications of high-voltage lithium metal batteries (HLMBs). However, rare GPEs that can satisfy the demands of HLMBs have been developed because of the limited compatibility with lithium anodes and high-voltage cathodes simultaneously. Herein, a novel strategy for constructing polymer matrixes with a customized frontier orbital energy for GPEs is proposed. The as-investigated polymer matrix (P(CUMA-NPF6))-based GPE (P(CUMA-NPF6)-GPE) obtained via in situ random polymerization delivers a wide voltage window (0–5.6 V vs Li+/Li), large lithium-ion transference number (tLi+, 0.61), and superior electrode/electrolyte interface compatibility. It is to be noted that such a tLi+ of P(CUMA-NPF6)-GPE, which is one of the largest tLi+ among high-voltage GPEs in a fair comparison, results from the high dissociation of lithium salts and effective anion immobilization abilities of P(CUMA-NPF6). Ultimately, the as-assembled HLMB delivers more enhanced cycle performance than its counterpart of commercial liquid electrolytes. It is also demonstrated that P(CUMA-NPF6) can scavenge the active PF5 intermediate generated in the electrolyte at the anode side, thus suppressing the PF5-mediated decomposition reaction of carbonates. This work will enlighten the rational structure design of GPEs for HLMBs.

Lithium metal is an ideal anode to replace graphite because of its high theoretical specific capacity. However, the surface of the lithium anode is prone to producing uncontrollable lithium dendrites, which seriously hinders its mass production. The morphology and chemical properties of the SEI layer have a key influence on the electrochemical precipitation of lithium ions on the electrode surface. Therefore, modifying the SEI layer is an important strategy to suppress lithium dendrites. This paper describes an effective additive, [tert-butyl(diphenyl)silyl] trifluoromethanesulfonate. The results reveal that the additive can be preferentially reduced on the surface of the lithium anode to form a flat and dense SEI layer, which further inhibits the consumption of the electrolyte and improves the electrochemical reversibility during the lithium plating/stripping process.

Electrode (including cathode and anode) /electrolyte interfaces play a vital role in determining battery performance. Especially, high-voltage lithium metal batteries (HVLMBs) with the Ni-rich layered oxide ternary cathode (NCM) can be considered a promising energy storage technology due to their outstanding energy density. However, it is still extremely challenging to address the unstable electrode/electrolyte interface and structural collapse of polycrystalline NCM at high voltage, greatly restraining its practical applications. In this work, a novel electrolyte additive, tris(2-cyanoethyl) borate (TCEB), has been used to construct the robust nitrogen (N) and boron (B)-rich protective films on single-crystal LiNi 0.6 Co 0.1 Mn 0.3 O 2 (SNCM) cathode and lithium metal anode surfaces, which could effectively mitigate parasitic reactions against electrolyte corrosion and retain the structural integrity of electrode. Remarkably, the SNCM||Li metal cell using TCEB-containing electrolyte maintains unprecedentedly superb capacity retention of 80% after 100 cycles at an ultrahigh charging voltage of 4.7 V (versus Li/Li + ). This finding provides a valuable reference to construct a stable electrode/electrolyte interface for the HVLMBs with achieving high-energy density.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes are outstanding candidates for next-generation lithium metal batteries in the realm of high specific energy densities , high safeties and tight contact with electrodes. However, their applications are still hindered by the limitations that no single polymer is electrochemically stable with the oxidizing high-voltage cathode and the highly reductive Li anode, simultaneously. Herein, a bilayer asymmetric polymer electrolyte (SL-SPE) without accessional interface resistance that using poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) as a “bridge” to connect the sulfonyl (O S = O)-contained oxidation-tolerated layer and polyether-derived reduction-tolerated layer (SPE), is proposed and synthesized by sequential two-step UV polymerizations. SL-SPE can provide widened electrochemical stability window up to 5 V, while simultaneously deploying a stable Janus interface property . Eventually, the superior high-voltage (4.4 V) cycling durability can be displayed in LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 |SL-SPE|Li batteries . This finding provides a bran-new idea for designing multifunctional polymer electrolytes in the application of solid-state batteries.

High-voltage lithium metal batteries suffer from poor cycling stability caused by the detrimental effect on the cathode of the water moisture present in the non-aqueous liquid electrolyte solution, especially at high operating temperatures (e.g., ≥60 °C). To circumvent this issue, here we report lithium hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) as an electrolyte additive. We demonstrate that the addition of a 0.6 wt% of LiHMDS in a typical fluorine-containing carbonate-based non-aqueous electrolyte solution enables a stable Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) coin cell operation up to 1000 or 500 cycles applying a high cut-off cell voltage of 4.5 V in the 25 °C−60 °C temperature range. The LiHMDS acts as a scavenger for hydrofluoric acid and water and facilitates the formation of an (electro)chemical robust cathode|electrolyte interphase (CEI). The LiHMDS-derived CEI prevents the Ni dissolution of NCM811, mitigates the irreversible phase transformation from layered structure to rock-salt phase and suppresses the side reactions with the electrolyte solution.

Practical high-voltage lithium metal batteries hold promise for high energy density applications, but face stability challenges in electrolytes for both 4 V-class cathodes and lithium anode. To address this, we delve into the positive impacts of two crucial moieties in electrolyte chemistry: fluorine atom (-F) and cyano group (-CN) on the electrochemical performance of polyether electrolytes and lithium metal batteries. Cyano-bearing polyether electrolytes possess strong solvation, accelerating Li + desolvation with minimal SEI impact. Fluorinated polyether electrolytes possess weak solvation, and stabilize the lithium anode via preferential decomposition of F-segment, exhibiting nearly 6000-h stable cycling of lithium symmetric cell. Furthermore, the electron-withdrawing properties of -F and -CN groups significantly bolster the high-voltage tolerance of copolymer electrolyte, extending its operational range up to 5 V. This advancement enables the development of 4 V-class lithium metal batteries compatible with various cathodes, including 4.45 V LiCoO 2 , 4.5 V LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 , and 4.2 V LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 . These findings provide insights into design principles centered around polymer components for high-performance polymer electrolytes.

High-voltage lithium (Li)-metal batteries with cell-level energy density over 350 Wh kg −1 are promising energy storage systems . However, the aggressive interphase chemistries associated with highly reactive Li-metal anode and high-voltage cathodes impede their practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate the targeted stabilization of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) in high-voltage Li-metal batteries by asymmetrically sustained-releasing different additives. An asymmetric sustained-release film loaded with lithium bis-(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) and LiNO 3 on each side is investigated as a proof-of-concept. The sustained-releasing of LiBOB and LiNO 3 can maintain a localized concentration at the high-voltage cathode and Li-metal anode fronts respectively, thus forming a stable B-containing CEI and N-containing SEI. As such, issues like dendrites growth, parasitic side reactions and transition metals dissolution under high-voltage are addressed simultaneously. Based on this strategy, the 30 μm Li|LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (4.1 mAh cm −2 ) batteries deliver a capacity retention of 80% after 173 cycles under a cut-off voltage of 4.5 V.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) coupled with a high-voltage Ni-rich cathode are promising for meeting the increasing demand for high energy density. However, aggressive electrode chemistry imposes ultimate requirements on the electrolytes used. Among the various optimized electrolytes investigated, localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have excellent reversibility against a lithium metal anode. However, because they consist of thermally and electrochemically unstable solvents, they have inferior stability at elevated temperatures and high cutoff voltages. Here we report a semisolvated sole-solvent electrolyte to construct a typical LHCE solvation structure but with significantly improved stability using one bifunctional solvent. The designed electrolyte exhibits exceptional stability against both electrodes with suppressed lithium dendrite growth, phase transition, microcracking, and transition metal dissolution. A Li||Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cell with this electrolyte operates stably over a wide temperature range from −20 to 60 °C and has a high capacity retention of 95.6% after the 100th cycle at 4.7 V, and ∼80% of the initial capacity is retained even after 180 cycles. This new electrolyte indicates a new path toward future electrolyte engineering and safe high-voltage LMBs.
