“Amphiphilic” carbon dots (A-CDs) with a strong green fluorescence emission were synthesized by a simple and green method at room temperature. The characterization demonstrated that the synthesized A-CDs have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties and could be dispersed well in aqueous and organic solutions. As a fluorescent probe, the fluorescence of A-CDs could be obviously quenched in the presence of iodine (I2) and the quenching rate is proportional to the concentration of I2. Therefore, the A-CDs could be used as fluorophores for the detection of I2 with higher selectivity and sensitivity, and the linear working range for the I2 sensor is 80 nM–10 μM with a detection limit of 3.5 nM (S/N = 3). More interesting is that IO3− and I− could be transformed to I2 with different sample treatment processes, therefore, the I2 sensor based on A-CDs could also be used for the analysis of iodine species (I2, I− and IO3−) in samples. The possible mechanism has also been discussed in this work, and the high selectivity response to I2 can be attributed to the amphiphilic properties of A-CDs, which bring I2 closer to A-CDs and quench their fluorescence. The proposed I2 sensor has been successfully used for the analysis of iodine species in highly saline water, and the satisfactory results of detection and analysis of iodine species in samples demonstrate that the developed I2 sensor based on A-CDs has potential application in the fields of environment and clinical medicine.

Emulsification and separation are of great significance in oil recovery. Herein, we report a synergic system of polymers and silica particles, which can achieve the emulsification and separation of heavy oil through the alkaline/acidic solution. Since the high salinity of formation water is an inevitable issue for chemical waterflooding, the effects of salinity on the properties of heavy oil emulsions were investigated by the zeta potential, interfacial tension (IFT), separation efficiency, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and rheology in experiments. The results show that heavy oil emulsions at extreme salinity (up to 50 g/L) remain stable under alkaline conditions. But conversely, the separation process of heavy oil emulsions is expedited under acidic conditions. Furthermore, the interaction mechanism is also elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations to provide a well-researched interpretation of the experimental phenomena. The self-assembly between the polymer and silica particles is seriously affected by the salt ions through the electrostatic screening effect, with increasing zeta potential values from −52.5 mV to −18.1 mV, and the interfacial films are crippled, exhibiting more viscous properties, which induces the separation of heavy oil emulsions. However, it can be stable under alkaline conditions with separation efficiencies of less than 14.3% in 24 h. This novel reversible PS system is used in hypersalinity (30 g/L) to realize emulsification and separation without any demulsifiers, breaking through the current salinity limit of polymer waterflooding (EOR increased by 15.51%). The findings of this study can help for a better understanding of the molecular mechanism of switchable heavy oil emulsions and develop a potential solution for EOR in reservoirs with high salinity.

Graphical This study develops a highly salt-resistant, hydrophobic associative polyacrylamide (CHFR) to enhance the reuse of high-salinity flowback fluid. Its microstructure is characterized using FT-IR and ¹H NMR, while rheological analysis confirms its superior thickening properties and salt tolerance. CHFR significantly outperforms conventional systems, providing a novel solution for efficient fluid reuse in high-salinity reservoirs. The reuse of flowback fluid is a critical strategy for mitigating environmental pollution and reducing the costs associated with hydraulic fracturing technology in oil fields. However, in high-salinity formations, the electrostatic shielding effect caused by high-salinity flowback fluid significantly reduces the thickening efficiency of polyacrylamide-based thickeners, thereby hindering the reuse of flowback fluid. In this study, we synthesized a novel, high-salinity-resistant, hydrophobic associative polymer (CHFR) by incorporating the hydrophobic monomer octadecyl polyoxyethylene methacrylate (N1810) into acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and methacryloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride (DMC). FT-IR and 1 H NMR confirmed the successful synthesis of CHFR. The polymer demonstrated a viscosity retention of 53% in a 20,000 mg/L NaCl solution and 46% in a CaCl 2 solution, exhibiting salt tolerance concentrations that were 10 and 30 times higher than those of conventional PAM/AMPS. At 100 °C and a shear rate of 100 s −1 , CHFR retained 78% of its viscosity. The interaction process between salt and CHFR can be divided into four phases: the initial period, the rapid viscosity decline period, the slow viscosity decline period, and the stable viscosity period. The CHFR polymer exhibits excellent salt resistance, providing a new type of polymer thickener for the reuse of high-salinity flowback fluid.

Fluorescent whitening agent 351 (FWA351) is an emerging highly persistent pollutant with potentially harmful effects on human health and aquatic ecosystem. However, developing highly effective adsorbents for the pre-treatment of environmental water samples containing FWA351 remains a problem. In this study, a novel polymer supported hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid (PS-[HMMim][Cl]) was prepared via a simple one-step method and used for the removal of FWA351 from water. It was found that the PS-[HMMim][Cl] exhibited an ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 1203.6 mg/g for FWA351 and maintained high removal efficiency in a wide pH range (2.0–9.0). Notably, even the concentration of FWA351 was as low as 0.005 mg/L (5 ppb), FWA351 could be effectively removed by the adsorbent, achieving an enrichment factor as high as 447.8. Various inorganic salts (such as KCl, NaCl and MgCl 2 ) at the concentration up to 1.0 mol/L had no obvious effect on the removal efficiency. The PS-[HMMim][Cl] also displayed outstanding adsorption performance towards fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) with similar structure to FWA351 and could be regenerated and reused for at least 8 cycles. Finally, the adsorbent was applied for the pre-treatment and then detection of FWA351 in six kinds of environmental water samples. Mechanism studies suggest that the synergistic driving forces of electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction and ion exchange are responsible for the efficient adsorption of FWA351. This work provides a new strategy for efficient adsorption and analysis of FWA351.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation presents significant potential for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. However, prolonged operation in marine environments often results in salt accumulation, which adversely impacts the performance and lifetime of system. Despite the progress in material design, achieving efficient evaporation while mitigating salt crystallization remains challenging in high-salinity water. In this study, we synthesized a hierarchically structured C 18 H 37 -MXene/PA/MS evaporator employing a simple yet effective methodology specifically designed for applications in high-salinity water environments. The evaporator features a dual-region configuration, with an upper hydrophobic light-absorbing layer comprising modified MXene and polyamide (PA) membranes and a hydrophilic lower layer consists of hydrophilic melamine sponge (MS). This innovative design, incorporating an ultra-thin polyamide interlayer, significantly enhances interfacial stability, thereby mitigating the interfacial separation typically observed in conventional Janus materials during prolonged usage. Furthermore, the meticulous control over the thickness of the hydrophobic layer (5.54 μm) ensures optimal thermal insulation properties of the material. Consequently, the C 18 H 37 -MXene/PA/MS evaporator demonstrates an impressive evaporation rate of 1.49 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 sun illumination, with a high energy efficiency of 92.8 %. Furthermore, the Janus architecture ensures steady performance in high salinity conditions, sustaining a high evaporation rate of 1.46 kg m −2 h −1 even in a 20 wt% NaCl solution. Furthermore, under natural sunlight, the daily freshwater yield reaches 8.91 kg m −2 . The exceptional evaporation efficiency and robust salt resistance highlight its strong potential for water desalination and wastewater treatment, contributing to the advancement of sustainable water resource management.

Treatment of hypersaline waters is a critical environmental challenge. Pervaporation (PV) desalination is a promising technique to address this challenge, but current PV membranes still suffer from challenging issues such as low flux and insufficient stability. Herein, we propose in situ nanoseeding followed by a secondary growth strategy to fabricate a high-quality stable metal–organic framework (MOF) thin membrane (UiO-66) for high-performance pervaporation desalination of hypersaline waters. To address the issue of membrane quality, a TiO2 nano-interlayer was introduced on coarse mullite substrates to favor the growth of a UiO-66 nanoseed layer, on which a well-intergrown UiO-66 selective membrane layer with thickness as low as 1 μm was finally produced via subsequent secondary growth. The PV separation performance for hypersaline waters was systematically investigated at different salt concentrations, feed temperatures, and long-term operation in different extreme chemical environments. Besides having nearly complete rejection (99.9%), the UiO-66 membrane exhibited high flux (37.4 L·m–2·h–1) for hypersaline waters, outperforming current existing zeolite and MOF membranes. The membrane also demonstrated superior long-term operational stability under various harsh environments (hypersaline, hot, and acidic/alkaline feed water) and mild fouling behavior. The rational design proposed in this study is not only applicable for the development of a high-quality UiO-66 membrane enabling harsh hypersaline water treatment but can also be potentially extended to other next-generation nanoporous MOF membranes for more environmental applications.

Organic phosphonates have been widely used in various industries and are ubiquitous in wastewaters, and efficient removal of phosphonates is still a challenge for the conventional processes because of the severe interferences from the complex water constitutions. Herein, an Nd-based nanocomposite (HNdO@PsAX) was fabricated by immobilizing hydrated neodymium oxide (HNdO) nanoparticles inside a polystyrene anion exchanger (PsAX) to remove phosphonates from high-salinity aqueous media. Batch experiments demonstrated that HNdO@PsAX had an excellent adsorption capacity (∼90.5 mg P/g-Nd) towards a typical phosphonate (1-hydrox-yethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, HEDP) from the background of 8 g/L NaCl, whereas negligible HEDP adsorption was achieved by PsAX. Attractively, various coexisting substances (humic acid, phosphate, citrate, EDTA, metal ligands, and anions) exerted negligible effects on the HEDP adsorption by HNdO@PsAX under high salinity. FT-IR and XPS analyses revealed that the inner-sphere complexation between HEDP and the immobilized HNdO nanoparticles is responsible for HEDP adsorption. Fixed-bed experiments further verified that HNdO@PsAX was capable of successively treating more than 4500 bed volumes (BV) of a synthetic high-salinity wastewater (1.0 mg P/L of HEDP), whereas only ∼2 BV of effective treatment capacity was received by PsAX. The exhausted HNdO@PsAX was amenable to a complete regeneration by a binary NaOH NaCl solution without significant loss in capacity. The capability in removing other organic phosphonates and treating a real electroplating wastewater by HNdO@PsAX was further validated. Generally, HNdO@PsAX exhibited a great potential in efficiently removing phosphonates from high-salinity wastewater.

Interfacial solar desalination generation (ISDG) presents a promising solution for obtaining freshwater from seawater. However, developing solar evaporators with robust salt resistance using simple methods to ensure consistent desalination performance remains a major challenge. In this study, we engineered a solar evaporator (CuS-PDA-PVAF) by modifying polyvinyl alcohol foam (PVAF) with polydopamine (PDA) and CuS using a straightforward solution immersion method. The incorporation of PDA and CuS enhances the sunlight absorption capability of PVAF to approximately 98 %, resulting in an evaporation rate of 1.44 kg m –2 h –1 under 1-solar intensity. The CuS-PDA-PVAF solar evaporator leverages the macroporous structure and excellent hydrophilicity, enabling it to withstand 15 wt% saltwater while maintaining a steady evaporation rate of about 1.17 kg m –2 h –1 . Outdoor tests confirm that a 1 m 2 CuS-PDA-PVAF can generate approximately 5.6 kg of freshwater daily. This solar evaporator, designed simply and resistant to salt, possesses substantial potential for alleviating freshwater scarcity.

In this work, the superhydrophobic polypropylene (PP) composite membranes with modified surface were successfully fabricated by loading the SiO 2 nanoparticles and attaching low surface energy 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane. The impact of deposited nanoparticle size on the surface roughness , heterogeneous nucleation barrier and critical nucleus size versus the loaded nanoparticle size ( d ∗ nuclear / d ) was simulated by the model combining the surface roughness and superhydrophobility with the critical nucleation energy. The optimized loaded nanoparticles size maintained the proper roughness and d ∗ nuclear / d to ensure the desired performance of antifouling. The improved superhydrophobic surface enhanced the anti-wetting ability of the membrane for vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) purpose. The resulting modified membrane possessed good anti-wetting ability and stable anti-fouling performance during long-term continuous and batch operation of VMD treating high salinity water system. The fouling rate of the fabricated membrane was decreased to 20% of the one of the original membrane under 15 wt% high salinity feed condition.

Toxic metals are usually present as organic complexes in high-salinity effluents from various industries. The efficient removal of such metal complexes is an imperative but still challenging task due to their stable structure and high mobility. Herein, we propose a new strategy to remove Cu-carboxyl complexes from high-salinity water by using a commercially available nanocomposite HZO-201, i.e., nanohydrated zirconium oxide (HZO) confined inside anion exchanger D201. In contrast to D201 and a cation exchanger D001, which both adsorb Cu-citrate negligibly, HZO-201 exhibits preferable adsorption toward Cu-citrate (∼130 mg Cu/g-Zr) at high salinity (1.5 wt % NaCl). On the basis of scanning transmission electron microscopy energy-dispersive spectrometry (STEM-EDS), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) analysis, the formation of ternary complex among Cu(II), citrate, and the embedded nano-HZO is evidenced to be responsible for the removal of Cu-citrate. The exhausted HZO-201 can be regenerated with a binary HCl-NaCl solution for repeated use for 5 cycles without capacity loss. Fixed-bed adsorption demonstrates that HZO-201 column is capable of producing ∼1150 bed volume (BV) clean water (<0.5 mg Cu/L) from simulated high-salinity wastewater, whereas only ∼10 BV and ∼60 BV was produced for the D001 and D201 columns, respectively. Furthermore, HZO-201 shows excellent removal of Cu(II) complexes with three other carboxyl ligands (oxalate, tartrate, and succinate).

ZID16PM, a zwitterionic hydrophobic associating polymer, has equivalent positive and negative charges and some hydrophobic monomers with twin-tailed long hydrophobic chains. It exhibits a great heat resistance and salt tolerance to the common salt in formation brine (MgCl2, CaCl2, NaCl, and KCl), which is attributed to its anti-polyelectrolyte effect and strong association force. High-salinity water (seawater or formation water) can be prepared as a fracturing fluid directly. In this paper, the formation water of the West Sichuan Gas Field is directly prepared into fracturing fluid with a concentration of 0.3% ZID16PM (Fluid-1), and the seawater of the Gulf of Mexico is directly prepared into fracturing fluid with a concentration of 0.3% ZID16PM (Fluid-2). Finally, rheological measurements, proppant suspension tests, and core matrix permeability damage rate tests for the Fluid-1 and Fluid-2 are conducted. Results show that after 120 min of shearing at 140 and 160 °C, respectively, the viscosity of Fluid-1 remains in the range of 50–85 mPa·s, and the viscosity of Fluid-2 remains in the range of 60–95 mPa·s. And the wastewater produced by an oilfield in Shaanxi, Xinjiang, and Jiangsu are also prepared into fracturing fluids with a concentration of 0.3% ZID16PM, the viscosity of these fracturing fluids can remain 32, 42, and 45 mPa·s, respectively, after 120 min of shearing at 160 °C. All results demonstrate that the polymer ZID16PM displays prominent performance in fracturing fluids. Keywords:zwitterionic hydrophobic associating polymer;salt effect;fracturing fluid system;high-salinity water;oilfield wastewater

Despite its eco-friendly nature, the use of photocatalysis in the treatment of high-salinity wastewater continues to pose significant challenges due to the unclear mechanism of how salinity impacts free radical generation. This study utilizes an electrostatic self-assembly method to integrate polythiophene (PTh) – a conductive polymer – with sulfur-doped graphitic carbon nitride (S-CN), thereby creating a composite of π-π conjugated photocatalyst (PTh/S-CN). Sulfur doping introduces an intermediate band gap in the catalyst, enhancing photon absorption. The hybridization also significantly broadens the light absorption spectrum of the composite, facilitating electron transfer to the triazine ring. By comparing the changes of free radicals during PTh/S-CN degradation of tetracycline (TC) in high-salinity and non-high-salinity waters, the formation processes of superoxide radical ( O 2 − ), hydroxyl radical ( OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation were elucidated. Experimental results showed that the degradation rate of TC by 5% PTh/S-CN reached 80.9% under visible light irradiation. High-salinity water bodies are more conducive to the production of 1 O 2 . The degradation pathway of TC and the toxicity of its intermediates were evaluated. It was confirmed that high-salinity water favored 1 O 2 production when other conductive polymers (such as polyaniline (PANI) and polypyrrole (PPy)) were hybridized with S-CN. This study highlights the free radical transformation pathways in high-salinity and non-high-salinity waters, underscoring the key role of non-radical pathways in high salinity water. It also offers new insights for designing photocatalytic materials suitable for high salinity wastewater treatment.
