Oil spillages and industrial discharge of oily water have caused severe damage to global environment. Currently a great many of oil-absorbing materials including graphene aerogels, superhydrophobic cellulose aerogels and polymer foams have been developed to effectively separate oil and water. However, most of the absorbing materials show limitations in separation of high-viscosity oils because the diffusion speed of high-viscosity oils into the porous materials is very slow at room temperature. In this article, a novel oil/water separation material was fabricated from rock wool superhydrophobically modified by PDMS/SiO 2 nanoparticle treatment. The modified rock wool could circularly absorb spilled oil and reload after combustion or squeezing. Most importantly, the modified rock wool worked well in continuously collecting high-viscosity oil with the aid of electric heating due to its excellent heat resistance. Because the rock wools have been industrially produced in large scale with very low prices and they are degradable naturally, this kind of spilled oil treatment was demonstrated to be a low-cost and environment-friendly method for the high-viscosity oil separation.

Transparent surfaces with anti-pollution and anti-adhesive properties show promise for optical windows. However, there is currently no effective way to create glass surfaces that are impervious to highly viscous and sticky oils, like crude oil. In this research, an electrical-heating silica glass with resistance to high viscosity oil was prepared using a femtosecond laser process. An inner micro-channel system was fabricated by the femtosecond laser wet etching method, and the surface was treated to be superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic through femtosecond laser irradiation. The prepared sample could be electrically heated by its internal heating unit, which could reduce the viscosity of the crude oil. Thus, the prepared sample is resistant not only to typically low-viscosity oils, but also prevents the adhesion of crude oil, which would be widely applied in anti-pollution optical windows.

Membrane separation has been considered as a promising technology for oily wastewater treatment . However, membrane fouling significantly limited its practical applications especially for oils with high viscosity and concentration. In this study, we propose membrane based nondispersive solvent extraction for continuous separation and recovery oils with high viscosity and concentration from oil-in-water emulsion. In this process, oil-in-water emulsion and extraction solution (hexane) was separated by a porous hydrophobic poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibrous membrane and flowed on each side of the membrane. The strong affinity of PVDF membrane and high solubility of hexane towards oil (e.g., lubricant oil) endowed continuous transfer of oil from emulsion side to hexane side. Different from conventional physical sieving, fouling enhanced transfer of lubricant oil in this process. Lubricant oil flux was up to about 336 g/m 2 when 1% lubricant oil-in-water emulsion was used and increased to 935 g/m 2 in case of 10%. Moreover, lubricant oil can be easily recovered through hexane evaporation both in low (17 o C) and relative high temperature (67 o C). Water content of recovered oil (0.10 ± 0.02%) was almost the same as original samples (0.11 ± 0.02%). Strategy proposed in the current study offers an effective way for treating oil-in-water emulsion with high viscosity and concentration.

Rapid and safe implementation of viscous crude oil cleanup is still a daunting challenge. Superhydrophobic materials are outstanding candidates for handling solvent spills, but are limited to recovering low viscosity oil and organic solvents. Hence, a polyurethane foam (PMRP-PU) integrating superelasticity, dual solar-responsive and fire resistance was fabricated by blending MXene and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) via self-foaming method. The surface temperature of the PMRP-PU reached 105 °C after simulated sunlight irradiation for 600 s. PMRP-PU had outstanding adsorption performance for low-viscosity oil and organic solvent (∼70.1 g/g) at room temperature, and the adsorption capacity of high-viscosity oil was also increased by 202.1 % compared with pure PU. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of PMRP-PU-3 remained at 92.7 % of the original level after 20 cycles of experiments. Excellent acid and alkali resistance and high temperature stability also greatly improved the environmental adaptability of the foam. Contrary to the flammability of pure PU, the peak heat release rate and total heat release of PMRP-PU-3 were decreased by 22.6 % and 25.2 %, respectively, and the melt dripping phenomenon disappeared during burning, exhibiting excellent fire safety. Briefly, this polyurethane foam can be repeatedly used for oil spill cleaning, and has a broad development prospect in the field of oil-water separation.

The principle of fibrous coalescers is to induce the coalescence and growth of small oil droplets in oil-in-water emulsions to achieve oil–water separation. However, they are poorly adaptable to emulsions containing high-viscosity oil. In this study, pressurized air is dissolved in the oil-in-water emulsion, microbubbles are released by reducing the pressure, and the emulsion is subsequently processed through a fibrous coalescer. Adding microbubbles altered the oil removal mechanism within the fibrous bed from oil droplet coalescence and growth to oil droplet–microbubble floc flotation, which significantly improved the emulsion separation efficiency of the fibrous bed, especially in complex emulsions containing surfactants and low salinity. Notably, the decrease in the interfacial energy of the oil droplet–microbubble floc caused oil droplets adhered to fibers to detach and renew quickly. Moreover, the curved interfacial tension increased oil droplet buoyancy and kinetic energy collectively drove the detachment of oil droplets from the fibrous bed. Effective, dynamic anti-fouling of the fibrous bed was able to maintain high throughput during long-term emulsion separation. This study provides a theoretical basis for the industrial application of fibrous coalescers for the treatment of oily wastewater produced during extraction high-viscosity crude oil.

Frequent oil spills at sea and the large-scale marine fires caused by them seriously jeopardize the marine ecosystem and human health. In this study, the use of multifunctional oil-absorbing materials was expected to solve the problems triggered by marine oil spills. Herein, a multifunctional coated polyurethane foams (FPMA-PUF) were prepared by immersing polyurethane foams (PUF) into a coating containing fluorinated polydimethylsilane (F-PDMS), silica, hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-OH), and ammonium polyphosphate (APP). The results showed that FPMA-PUF exhibited superhydrophobicity, chemical stability, and mechanical durability, which was capable of adsorbing and separating a variety of oils in a stable manner. FPMA-PUF had excellent flame retardancy and self-extinguishing after 65 s of combustion, which could reduce the risk of fire. In addition, FPMA-PUF also had a certain degree of fire resistance in the simulation of marine oil fire. FPMA-PUF could be used in combination with a pump to achieve the recovery of oil within 52 s for fire extinguish. This work provided a new direction for dealing with the adsorption and separation of high-viscosity oils, safety prevention and control of fires caused by marine oils, as well as fire extinguishing treatment, and realizing the benign strategy of extinguishing the fire by pumping the oil strike at the root of the trouble.

Separating water-in-oil emulsions is important in terms of environmental protection and resource recovery. To address the challenges posed by the water–oil interface, superwetting materials have been designed to accomplish separation through filtration and adsorption. Superhydrophobic membranes prevent the permeation of water droplets owing to extreme repellence and their size-sieving abilities. However, their use in remediating water-contaminated oil is limited by high oil viscosities. Meanwhile, in-air superhydrophilic sorbents are rarely employed for the separation of water-in-oil emulsions due to the thermodynamic and kinetic limitations of water adsorption in oil. Herein, the integration of an under-medium superlyophilic membrane with the hierarchical porous structure of wood is presented for filtration-driven selective adsorption of water from surfactant-stabilized (10 g/L) water-in-oil emulsions. Compared to filtration through a natural wood membrane or direct adsorption using an under-oil superhydrophilic wood membrane, the under-medium superlyophilic wood membrane demonstrated high separation efficiencies of > 99.95% even when applied to the regeneration of high-viscosity lubricating (6.3 mPa s) and edible (50.5 mPa s) oils, exhibiting viscosity-dependent fluxes and excellent stability. Moreover, the cost of purifying 200 mL of lubricating oil using the modified wood membrane was much lower than the oil’s market price and required a low energy consumption of ca. 1.72 kWh. Environmental implication The ever-growing use of petroleum and industrial/domestic oil products has led to excessive (estimated at a million tons per year) output of waste oils. Because direct discharge of waste oils into the environment causes serious pollution problems, separating water-in-oil emulsions is important in terms of environmental protection and resource recovery. Here filtration-driven water adsorption has been demonstrated to be a feasible method for the remediation of water-contaminated waste oils, even those that are highly viscous.

The separation of high-viscosity oil–water emulsions remains a global challenge due to ultra-stable interfaces and severe membrane fouling. In this paper, SiO2micro–nanoparticles coated with polyethyleneimine (PEI) were initially loaded onto a stainless steel substrate. This dual-functional design simultaneously modifies surface roughness and wettability. Furthermore, a covalent crosslinking network was created through the Schiff base reaction between PEI and glutaraldehyde (GA) to enhance the stability of the membrane. The membrane exhibits extreme wettability, superhydrophilicity (WCA = 0°), and underwater superoleophobicity (UWOCA = 156.9°), enabling a gravity-driven separation of pump oil emulsions with 99.9% efficiency and a flux of 1006 L·m−2·h−1. Moreover, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrate that the SiO2-PEI-GA-modified membrane promotes the formation of a stable hydration layer, reduces the oil–layer interaction energy by 85.54%, and exhibits superior underwater oleophobicity compared to the unmodified SSM. Efficiency is maintained at 99.8% after 10 cycles. This study provides a scalable strategy that combines covalent crosslinking with hydrophilic particle modification, effectively addressing the trade-off between separation performance and membrane longevity in the treatment of viscous emulsions.

This research employed a simplistic approach to modify polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and graphene oxide (GO) onto the surface of the PU skeleton, and then synthesize an oil–water separation material (rGO@PDMS/PU) with photothermal conversion performance and superoleophilic/superhydrophobic properties through high-temperature reduction. The synthesized rGO@PDMS/PU can adsorb organic solvents or oil that are 19–37 times its own weight, while also having a 99.1% oil–water separation efficiency. Additionally, rGO@PDMS/PU also has good photothermal conversion ability. Under the intensity of 1 sunlight ( q = 1 kW m −2 ), its surface temperature can reach 95.4°C within 10 s. Relying on the excellent oil–water selectivity and photothermal conversion capabilities of rGO@PDMS/PU, we also build a novel oil-gathering device that can successfully make oil recovery on the water surface in situ. When the device is under light conditions, its crude oil recovery efficiency is nearly four times higher than when there is no light. Therefore, this new oil-gathering device has broad application prospects in high-viscosity oil leakage incidents such as crude oil and engine oil.

Industrialization releases many high-viscosity oil pollutants into the environment, requiring a hydrophobic recyclable oil-absorbing material. Therefore, a self-heating and superhydrophobic melamine sponge (MS) by connecting polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated with functionalized molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets on a three-dimensional microstructure of a commercial MS (MoS2/PDMS/MS) via a simple and low-cost dip-coating method. The prepared sponge showed a water contact angle of 151.8°, indicating that the modified sponge exhibited superhydrophobicity. Due to the addition of MoS2, the modified sponge can convert light into heat, and its surface could be heated to 59.7 °C within 30 s. Because of the excellent MoS2/PDMS/MS photothermal performance, the sponge could decrease the viscosity of the high-viscosity oil, absorbing the high-viscosity oil efficiently. After simultaneous thermal analysis and repeated compression tests, the modified sponge exhibited high thermochemical stability, mechanical property, and reusability. This superhydrophobic multifunctional sponge shows excellent potential for high-viscosity oil absorption.

Frequent oil spills have caused severe environmental pollution and ecological issues. Conventional adsorption materials are attractive candidates for oil spills, but their effectiveness is hindered primarily by certain high-viscosity oils. In this work, we fabricated a bio-based aerogel which is composed of sodium alginate and polyaniline-modified attapulgite, with photothermal conversion and water repellency (water contact angle > 138°) via freeze-drying and hydrophobic modification with polydimethylsiloxane . The composite aerogel has strong chemical stability, with a maximum absorption capacity of 32 g/g. Furthermore, the aerogel exhibits exceptional photothermal performance, achieving a surface temperature increase to 85 °C within 3 min under 1.0 sun irradiation. This capability reduces silicone oil absorption time from 4 to 1 min, conserving 75% of absorption time and reaching a silicone oil absorption capacity of 21 g/g. The separation efficiency of the aerogel for emulsions is also satisfactory, which greatly broadens its application range. The preparation of solar heated aerogels provides a potential solution for exploring biomass materials to solve the problem of oil spill recovery on a large scale.

Rapid and efficient recovery of crude oil spill is still a great challenge because of its high viscosity and limited flowability at ambient temperature. Given this dilemma, we propose a simple and fast crude oil remediation solution by loading green, low-cost and scalable superhydrophobic fiber felt onto the shipborne oil recovery device, which enables the whole process from crude oil adsorption to recovery. This fiber felt (FF) is prepared based on inexpensive and readily available softwood pulp, and then the adsorbent is endowed with excellent photo/electrical-thermal conversion properties through simple in-situ growth of polypyrrole (PPy). Its surface temperature can rapidly reach 65 °C under 1 kW·m −2 light intensity and 93 °C under the low voltage of 8 V, which makes it high-efficiency in oil spill cleanup under sunlight/low-voltage input. Importantly, combined with COMSOL simulations, the flow behavior of crude oil in the real pore channels of the material is thoroughly investigated, revealing the flow rate distribution and diffusion characteristics of crude oil in the pore channels under different thermal response conditions, which offers a theoretical basis for the adsorption of crude oil. This study integrates the easily prepared fiber felt, which has excellent oil adsorption property, with shipborne oil recovery device, solving the problem of traditional adsorbents being difficult to realize large-scale application due to complex preparation and the lack of supporting devices, and providing an efficient emergency solution for high-viscosity oil spill pollution.
