Structure regulation of lignin-derived N-doped carbon-supported Ni catalyst for efficient upgrading of ethanol to higher alcohols

Quanzhou Xu,Xing Fei,Xueqing Qiu,Xiaofei Wang,Tiejun Wang,Xuliang Lin,Sha Li,Yanlin Qin

The selective conversion of biomass-derived ethanol into higher alcohols is a desirable but challenging process for the efficient production of value-added chemicals from alternative carbon sources. However, the current catalysts used in ethanol coupling exhibit low conversion rates and yields towards the formation of higher alcohols, necessitating significant improvements in their efficiency for practical applications. In this work, a lignin-derived N-doped carbon- supported Ni catalyst for ethanol coupling was designed and synthesized. The Ni@NC catalyst, synthesized using diethylenetriamine as the nitrogen source with a mass ratio of nitrogen source to lignin of 2:1 and a molar ratio of metal to lignin of 20:1, demonstrated excellent performance, with an ethanol conversion rate of 81.1% and a yield of C 4+ alcohols reaching 35.3%. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that nitrogen-doped lignin, in appropriate quantities, along with the metal active component, forms a Ni-N-C structure that controls charge redistribution between the support and the Ni catalyst. This structure hinders the interaction of reaction intermediates and inhibits the production of by-products in the decomposition reaction, resulting in a higher yield of C 4+ alcohols. This study presents a more cost-effective and efficient approach for developing ethanol-coupling catalysts and holds promise for expanding the utility of lignin-derived catalysts.

Direct Conversion of Syngas to Higher Alcohols over a CuCoAl|t-ZrO2 Multifunctional Catalyst

Chao Huang,Can Zhu,Mingwei Zhang,Yongwu Lu,Qianhao Wang,Heming Qian,Jiangang Chen,Kegong Fang

Graphical Synergetic effect : The physically mixed CuCoAl|t-ZrO 2 multifunctional catalyst could achieve superior selectivity towards alcohols while simultaneously inhibiting the generation of hydrocarbons from CO hydrogenation. Selective synthesis of higher alcohols from syngas is promising but remains challenging owing to the low stability and selectivity towards higher alcohols. Here we introduce a CuCoAl|t-ZrO 2 (t denotes tetragonal crystal phase) multifunctional catalyst that can achieve an alcohol selectivity of 64.8 % with 79.6 % C 2+ OH, and a total selectivity of alcohols and olefins to 81.7 %. The proper proximity was tuned to increase selectivity towards alcohols and decrease the selectivity towards hydrocarbons. The lower surface [H*]/[C*] ratio due to the stronger basic sites of the CuCoAl|t-ZrO 2 limited alkyl (CH x ) species hydrogenation, and promoted CO insertion and carbon chain growth, resulting in improving the alcohols selectivity. Meanwhile, the weaker adsorption of bridge-type adsorbed CO and the lower decomposition rate of multi-bonded adsorbed CO over CuCoAl|t-ZrO 2 inhibited hydrocarbon generation. The selective promotion of the reaction route via the synergetic effect between CuCoAl and t-ZrO 2 was proposed to boost higher alcohols selectivity. This work may aid the rational design of effective multifunctional catalyst with synergistic effects for tuning selectivity.

Graphical Get a move on ! Biofuels such as renewable alkanes and higher alcohols have drawn considerable interests. Herein, carbon supported phosphated ruthenium-molybdenum (RuMoP) catalysts were employed in continuous trickle-bed reactor for converting sorbitol into renewable alkanes and higher alcohols. The results showed that RuMoP catalysts presented a complete sorbitol conversion and high yields of alkanes and alcohols in gasoline and diesel range. Finally, detailed characterizations were performed over relevant catalysts for correlating their catalytic and physicochemical properties. Biofuels such as renewable alkanes and higher alcohols have drawn considerable interests for the use in internal combustion engines. Especially, higher alcohols could be used as a blending agent for diesel fuels. Herein, carbon supported phosphated ruthenium-molybdenum (RuMoP) catalysts were employed in continuous trickle-bed reactor for converting sorbitol into renewable alkanes and higher alcohols. The results showed that RuMoP on an active carbon (AC) support presented a complete sorbitol conversion and high yields of alkanes and alcohols in gasoline and diesel range. Subsequently, carbon nanotube (CNT) supported RuMoP was prepared and studied in detail for comparison. RuMoP/CNT presented a low C−C bond cracking property in sorbitol conversion and high selectivity of C6 products in gas-phase (C6 alkane, 74.7 %) and oil-phase (C6 alkane and alcohols, 87.8 %). Finally, detailed characterizations (N 2 -adsorption, XRD, HRTEM, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, Py-IR spectrums, etc.) were performed over relevant catalysts (RuMoP/C and RuMoP/CNT) for correlating their catalytic and physicochemical properties.

Application of solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE-GC-MS) in resolution of metabolism pattern of higher alcohols in rat plasma

Yufei Liu,Xiaonian Cao,Zhilei Zhou,Qingxi Ren,Zhongwei Ji,Min Gong,Yuezheng Xu,Weibiao Zhou,Shuguang Chen,Jian Mao

Higher alcohols are key factors affecting sensory quality and post-drinking comfort of alcoholic beverages. A strategy combining solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE-GC-MS) was established to analyze the metabolism pattern of higher alcohols in rat plasma after gavage of 4 common alcoholic beverages including huangjiu, baijiu, wine and brandy. 7 mL of dichloromethane was determined as the optimal extraction condition, and 8 higher alcohols were precisely quantified with detection limits of 1.82−11.65 μg/L, recoveries of 89.07 %−110.89 % and fine repeatability. The fastest absorption and elimination rates of plasma total higher alcohols were observed in baijiu and huangjiu group, respectively, and the highest peak concentration was found in brandy group. Additionally, the metabolic rate of plasma isoamyl alcohol in huangjiu group was faster than that in wine group at the same intragastric administration dosage. This study may provide potential insight for evaluation of alcoholic beverage quality.

On the use of Tequila for the biosynthesis of SiO2 nanoparticles

Martinez E. Gándara,Villarreal N. Elizondo,Coronado K. A. Chavez,Cuellar E. M. López,Hernández A. Guzman,Delgado D. Martínez,Delgado F. Paraguay

The aim of this work is the synthesis of SiO 2 nanoparticles starting from Tequila as green chemistry, which implies something novel. Tequila was used as a capping, a reducer, a surfactant and stabilizer from a solution of silicon tetraacetate, deionized water, acetone, and sodium hydroxide. The structure, optical absorption, and morphological analysis of these nanoparticles were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–Visible spectrophotometer, and TEM. The XRD analysis indicated an amorphous phase of SiO 2 nanoparticles; the size of the synthesized nanoparticle is about 20 ± 30 nm and optical absorption analysis indicated a peak in the 260 nm range. More than 175 constituents were found in Tequila and the most common constituents were 2-methyl-1-butanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol. These higher alcohols are a good disperser and they could not only increase the number of nucleation sites but also reduce the rate of grain growth. A green and cost-effective method for the synthesis of SiO 2 NPs using Tequila which focused on the utilization of a novel and original way, was demonstrated. Graphical abstract

Bimetallic CuCo nanoparticles derived from hydrotalcite supported on carbon fibers for higher alcohols synthesis from syngas

Lianfang Wang,Ang Cao,Guilong Liu,Lihong Zhang,Yuan Liu

Higher alcohols synthesis (HAS) is a strong exothermal reaction which leads to the formation of hotspots on the catalysts and the hotspots result in poor selectivity, and Cu–Co based catalysts are one of the most promising to which the formation of Cu–Co alloy is critical. Therefore a new scheme was proposed, based on the excellent thermal conductivity of carbon fibers (CFs) and the uniform mixing of metal ions in layered double hydroxides (LDHs), the latter favors the formation of metallic alloy. Nanocomposites of LDHs and CFs were prepared by using co-precipitation method and used for HAS, and characterized by using FTIR, N 2 adsorption–desorption, XRD, TPR, SEM and TEM techniques. In the composites, nanosheets with the typical LDHs morphology are perpendicularly grown on the surface of CFs while intersecting each other, creating a highly open and porous structure. After reduction, Cu–Co-alloy nanoparticles are formed from the LDHs. The resultant catalysts showed high activity and much high selectivity to higher alcohols. The reported methods can be expanded to prepare other LDHs/CFs composites.
