Natural materials possess inherent multilength-scale structures, showcasing outstanding mechanical properties such as strain-stiffening, high damping, and shape-memory features under ambient conditions. Such integrated properties are highly desirable for advanced materials in biomedical devices and soft robots but remain challenging in synthetic materials. Herein, a novel strategy of sequential ion treatment is employed to introduce micro/nanoscale-ordered structures and molecular-scale stimulus responses into hydrogel-derived self-assembly fibers under ambient conditions. The treated fibers exhibit strain-stiffening properties with a high toughness of 257 MJ m −3 and 73% damping capacity comparable to spider silk. Owing to their cross-linking network and reversible secondary structure, those fibers exhibit outstanding water-stability, wet stretchability, and hydration-responsive shape-memory performance, with ultimate elongation of 407%, shape-fixity ratio of 94%, and shape-recovery rate of 97%. This work furthers the green fabrication of smart materials with multifunction and presents promising applications in diverse fields, including biomimetics and biomedicine.

Damping materials, especially high-damping (loss factor (tanδ) > 0.5 and above) materials, are widely applied for suppressing vibration and controlling noise in industrial field, but achieving a high tanδ over a wide temperature range is a challenging task. Herein, we report a novel polyurethane (PU)/epoxy (EP) interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) damping material by using 21-hydroxyl β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) as PU chain extenders. At a high ratio of hydroxyls to isocyanate groups, every β-CD underwent a different degree of chain expansion. Then these β-CDs grafting different numbers of PU chains generated different-size hard segments, thus increasing the species of motion units and widening the damping temperature range. The unreacted hydroxyls on β-CDs provided a large quantity of hydrogen bonding protons, which could form hydrogen bonds with urethane groups, thus facilitating an increase in the tanδ value. Therefore, PU/EP IPNs with a broad high-damping temperature range were successfully prepared. The results showed that PU/EP IPNs cured by β-CDs underwent a damping temperature range of 93.1 K (tanδ > 0.5), 82.4 K (tanδ > 0.7) and even 74.1 K (tanδ > 0.8), much better than the corresponding 32.9 K, 23.9 K and 20.5 K for traditional PU/EP IPNs cured by trihydroxyl trimethylolpropane (TMP).

Although hindered phenol/polymer-based hybrid damping materials, with excellent damping performance, attract more and more attention, the poor stability of hindered phenol limits the application of such promising materials. To solve this problem, a linear hindered phenol with amorphous state and low polarity was synthesized and related polyurethane-based hybrid materials were prepared in this study. The structure and state of the hindered phenol were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) between hindered phenol and polyurethane was confirmed by FT-IR, and the amorphous state of the hybrids was confirmed by XRD. Moreover, by a combination of molecular dynamics simulation and dynamic mechanical analysis, the relationship between the structure optimization of the hindered phenol and the high damping performance of the hybrids was quantitatively revealed. By constructing the synthetic hindered phenol, the intramolecular HBs between hindered phenols were restricted, while the strength and concentration of the intermolecular HBs increased by increasing the amount of hindered phenol. Thus, intermolecular interactions were enhanced, which lead to the compact chain packing of polyurethane, extended chain packing of hindered phenol, and good dispersion of hindered phenol in polyurethane. Therefore, the stability of the hindered phenol and the damping properties of the hybrids were both improved. The experiment results are expected to provide some useful information for the design and fabrication of high-performance polymeric damping materials. Keywords:hindered phenol/polymer-based hybrid damping materials;stability;high damping performance;structure optimization;damping mechanism

Damping materials have application prospects in shock absorption and noise reduction due to their ability to convert vibration into other forms of energy dissipation. Although there have been tremendous attempts to prepare materials with high damping performance, it is still a challenge to fabricate materials with excellent mechanical properties and stability while maintaining a high energy dissipation capacity. Herein, damping materials of reinforced waterborne polyurethane by adjusting the ratio of soft and hard segments is reported. As the content of hard segments increases, the content of hydrogen bonds interaction between segments increases and the phase boundaries on the microscopic morphology form which obviously enhances the damping capacity. The ultimate samples exhibit a damping capacity of more than 90% and a toughness of 14.8 MJ m –3 , maintaining good toughness while exceeding the damping capacity of the most reported materials. The damping mechanisms are summarized into three aspects, the frication among soft segments, the destruction of hydrogen bonds, and the interface friction between soft and hard domains. This work paves an avenue for the application of waterborne polyurethane materials in kinetic energy buffering and impact reduction.

High-damping rubber materials are essential for fabricating high-performance green tires due to their distinct advantage of low noise and vibration, good auto-braking, and service life. However, the poor interfacial compatibility between the common nonpolar tread rubber materials and polar polymers/fillers severely restricts the development of high-damping rubber composites. Herein, we prepared a multi-functionalization high vinyl polybutadiene rubber (MFHVBR) without gel formation by anionic reaction. This significantly enhanced the interaction and compatibility with the high-damping ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) rubber. The interfacial potential energy of the MFHVBR/EVA blended system is nearly five times lower than that of the high vinyl polybutadiene rubber (HVBR) and EVA blended system, as certified by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. At an optimized MFHVBR/EVA weight ratio of 8:2, the composites demonstrate significantly improved damping performance without sacrificing the vulcanization rates and mechanical properties. The effective damping temperature range (tanδ > 0.3) from −11.1°C to 56.7°C totally covered the service temperature of tires and is also among the highest values for the reported tread rubber materials. The interfacial potential energy used for predicting the interfacial compatibility between the nonpolar rubbers and polar polymers/fillers provides insights for realizing high-damping rubber composites.

Effectively attenuating highly penetrative low-frequency noise (LFN, f < 500 Hz) presents a significant challenge. Traditional acoustic insulation materials are circumscribed by the mass law, presenting an inherent conflict between lightweight design and acoustic insulation. Despite the promising potential of PUA aerogels in acoustic insulation, attributed to their lightweight and high damping properties, their low-density results in inadequate areal density. Consequently, it remains challenging to effectively suppress LFN through mass inertia alone. Moreover, lightweight design often reduces mechanical properties, creating a conflict between lightweight, high strength, and low-frequency acoustic insulation. Inspired by the periodic structures of metamaterials, this study fabricates a PUA aerogel with an ordered metamaterial-like structure (density: 0.126 g/cm 3 ). Through self-assembly induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an ordered porous cavity and fibrous topological skeleton were formed. This structure creates an efficient interfacial reflection network that provides dynamic acoustic impedance for LFN attenuation. The average STL is at least 42.6 dB in the 45–500 Hz range and 39.6 dB in the broader 45–6300 Hz range, 16.35 times higher than that of commercial melamine foam of the same 2 cm thickness. Its weight is just 1/770 that of lightweight concrete bricks with equivalent noise reduction performance, and its thickness is only 2/25 of theirs. At 145 °C, the aerogel maintains a temperature difference of approximately 105.05 °C between its surfaces. The compressive strength of the modified aerogels is 2.76 times that of unmodified PUA aerogels. The simple, cost-effective fabrication process and the lightweight, high-strength, and outstanding low-frequency acoustic insulation properties make metamaterial-like PUA aerogels promising for noise reduction in residential, transportation, and industrial applications.
