Chicken feather, which is consisted of keratin, has always been abandoned as solid waste. The utilization technologies of waste keratin have been developed in electric zones and materials fields so far. Recently, numerous new types of adsorbents have been used for antibiotic removal. The chicken feather carbon is supposed to be a potential one. In this study, an activated feather carbon (AFC) was developed as the absorbent of amoxicillin (AMOX) in simulated wastewater. The micropore structures of AFC were detected by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) was recorded and analyzed. A BET surface area, as high as 1838.86 m 2 /g, was measured in this study. At the meantime, a rapid adsorption (5∼7 min) and high removal efficiency (99.63%) could be observed. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption of AMOX by AFC was an exothermic physic-adsorption. The interaction between AMOX and AFC surface was supposed to be a multiple-layer adsorption process for it is well fitted with the Freundlich model. The adsorption behavior could be described by pseudo-second-order model almost perfectly in kinetic studies. In addition, effect of pH, ionic strength, and reusability properties were also discussed in this paper. The AFC was proved to be the most rapid, efficient, and economically absorbent for AMOX removal, which was effective enough under various temperatures and saline circumstances. It was also proved useful, convenient, and renewable in dealing with the tough antibiotic pollutant problems and rebuilding of antibiotic sewage treatment facilities.

Herein, we present a novel, straightforward, eco-friendly and cost-effective method for synthesizing fluorescent carbon dots. A simple one-pot hydrothermal method was used to create blue-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) from waste chicken feathers and ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) as precursors. The research demonstrates that N-CDs not only exhibit excellent photostability, but also serve as a versatile nanoscale fluorescence sensor for the efficient qualitative and quantitative detection of chlortetracycline (CTC) in samples. The mechanism of fluorescence quenching is attributed to the specific and rapid quenching of N-CDs fluorescence by chlortetracycline through the static quenching and inner filter effect (IFE). The concentration of CTC within the range of 0.05–0.35 mM exhibits a significant linear relationship with the fluorescence quenching of N CDs, as indicated by the formula (I 0 -I)/I = 4.74248c(CTC)-0.09041. Subsequent spiked recovery experiment confirms the feasibility of this method for the detection of CTC in samples. Therefore, leveraging the concept of turning waste into treasure, this study successfully developed a green and cost-effective method for synthesizing N CDs from natural biomass, offering a novel perspective for further development of multifunctional sensors.

To improve the adsorption efficiency, a H 3 PO 4 -modified biochar (CFCP) was prepared using chicken feather and applied to Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ adsorption. The pseudo-second-order model could explain the Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ adsorption behavior. CFCP had faster adsorption rate than non-modified biochar (CFC2). The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm could better describe the Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ adsorption, respectively. The value of q m for Cd 2+ adsorption and K F for Pb 2+ adsorption by CFCP was 7.84 mg·g −1 and 24.41 mg 1−(1/n) ·L 1/n ·g −1 , which was 1.38 and 5.41 times of the corresponding results of CFC2. Relative to Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ was selectively adsorbed by biochars in the binary metal system. Phosphate precipitation explained in part the selective adsorption of Pb 2+ . Proline, glucose, and pH (4–6) had little influence on Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ adsorption. Electrostatic interaction, precipitation, and O–H bonds were the primary adsorption mechanisms. The increased N-containing heterocycles of CFCP accounted for the increased Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ adsorption.

Chicken feather keratin (CK), a biomaterial that contains a large amount of nitrogen is extracted from chicken feathers and has significant potential for use as a flame retardant. In this study, CK and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) were added in different amounts to an epoxy resin (EP), and their flame retardancy and smoke suppression effects were studied. The results showed that CK exhibits a good flame-retardancy effect and better smoke suppression characteristics than those of DOPO when added to EP. Furthermore, it greatly reduces the CO yield in smoke. While the EP samples with DOPO showed better flame-retardancy properties than those of the samples with CK, they also produced more smoke, which had a higher CO content. Furthermore, when CK and DOPO were added to EP together, the flame-retardancy characteristics of the samples varied with the CK/DOPO ratio. Then the pyrolysis of all samples was divided into two stages based on thermokinetics analysis and the activation energies of these samples in the two stages were investigated. Finally, the flame-retardancy mechanism was discussed. When samples burn, the PO· free radicals derived from DOPO combine with H· and OH· to induce a quenching effect. In addition, the phosphate resulting from the decomposition of DOPO promotes the formation of the char layer. At the same time, the noncombustible gases generated during the pyrolysis of CK cause the char layer to expand and remove some of the heat. Thus, CK and DOPO synergistically improved the flame retardancy of EP.

N self-doped porous biochars (KBCs) were synthesized through high-temperature carbonization and KHCO 3 activation using chicken feathers as biomass. Subsequently, it was employed for the remediation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC)-contaminated water and soil. The properties of KBCs were analyzed by various characterization techniques. The results verified that KBC 800-2 exhibited outstanding specific surface area (1648.89 m 2 g −1 ) and pore volume (0.806 cm 3 g −1 ). The maximum adsorption capacity of KBC 800-2 for TC was 147.8 mg g −1 , which was superior to that of raw biochar (15.5 mg g −1 ). The results of pseudo-second-order and Freundlich indicated that the process was dominated by chemisorption. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of KBC 800-2 was stable over a wide pH range of 3–12 and high coexisting ionic strength. The consequences proved that the enhancement of pore filling effect and π-π electron interactions between TC and N self-doped adsorbent were the predominant driving forces to improve the adsorption efficiency of TC. Notably, compared to T50 (soil and 50 mg kg −1 TC), the properties of organic carbon, total nitrogen, and sucrase, urease, and catalase activities in TKBC 800-2 (soil, 50 mg kg −1 TC, and 2% KBC 800-2 ) were increased by 108.57%, 4.98%, 886.08%, 89.52%, and 78.08% respectively. KBC 800-2 as a low-cost and highly effective adsorbent for antibiotic pollution has enormous application potential. Graphical

Waste chicken feathers are the ideal precursor for the production of low-cost N-enriched biochar. KOH-modified N-enriched biochar (KNB) containing 15.92 wt% N was successfully prepared using waste chicken feathers. The adsorption kinetics results showed that KNB had rapid Cd (2 h) and Pb (1 h) adsorption rates. The Cd and Pb adsorption capacities of KNB (the values of K F were 22.324 (Cd) and 119.654 (Pb) mg 1−(1/n) ·L 1/n ·g −1 ) were 7.07 and 26.52 times higher than those of the original biochar based on the adsorption isotherm results. The KNB was stable at pH 3–6 and had stronger co-adsorption capacities in double-ion systems. Based on the adsorption experiments and various characterization methods, we concluded that the primary Cd and Pb adsorption mechanisms of KNB involved electrostatic interactions, cation-π interactions, complexation, and K + exchange. The precipitation mechanism could partially account for Pb adsorption but not for Cd adsorption. KOH modification enhanced the electronegativity of biochar and then increased the electrostatic attraction. Surface O- and N-containing functional groups were involved in Cd and Pb adsorption. Graphitic-N, oxidised-N, and O C O were the main active adsorption groups, the relative contents of which increased after KOH modification, thus increasing the Cd and Pb adsorption performance. Therefore, KNB can be used as a fast and highly efficient adsorption agent to remove Cd and Pb from wastewater containing either Cd and Pb or a combination of these two metals.
