Both soil erosion and soil contamination pose critical environmental threats to the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). Green, efficient and feasible remediation technologies are highly demanded to meet these challenges. Herein we propose a unique “soil for soil-remediation” strategy to remediate the heavy metal polluted soil in CLP by converting loess into zeolite for the first time. With a simple template-free route, the natural loess can be converted into cancrinite (CAN) type of zeolite. A highly crystalline CAN was obtained via hydrothermal treatment at 240 o C for 48 h, with a precursor alkalinity of Na/(Si+Al)> 2.0. The as-synthesized CAN zeolite exhibits excellent remediation performance for Pb(II) and Cu(II) polluted soil. Plant assay experiment demonstrates that CAN can significantly restrain the uptake and accumulation of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions in vegetables, with a high removal efficiency up to 90.7% and 81.4%, respectively. This work demonstrates a “soil for soil-remediation” strategy to utilize the natural loess for soil remediation in CLP, which paves the way for developing green and sustainable remediation eco-materials with local loess as raw materials.

The leakage of chemical compounds in landfill leachate led to serious environment pollution, especially, the compounds termed endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A (BPA). It is very important to study the adsorption behavior of endocrine disruptors in modified soil for predicting and evaluating the potential harm of endocrine disruptors to the soil. Bentonite-amended Chinese loess mixtures, with various proportions of bentonite, were used for the removal of BPA from an aqueous solution. A batch test was used to investigate the adsorption properties of bisphenol A on bentonite and Chinese loess mixtures. The influences of bentonite proportion, temperature, reaction time, pH, and soil-water ratios on the adsorption process were considered. The Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) was used to clarify the change of functional groups before and after the adsorption of BPA on soil. The adsorption mechanism of BPA on soil was discussed preliminary. The results show that the addition of bentonite to the loess can improve the adsorption rate of BPA. The adsorption of BPA was mainly a spontaneous, exothermic, entropy decreasing physical adsorption process. The interaction between bentonite content and reaction concentration had a beneficial effect on BPA adsorption. The linear relationship between bentonite content and adsorption capacity was obtained. The results indicate that bentonite amended loess can provide a good liner for BPA.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a toxic endocrine disruptor often found in landfill leachate . Adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of BPA onto organo-bentonites amended loess , e.g., Hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride-bentonite (HTMAC-B) and Carboxymethylcellulose-bentonite (CMC-B) were experimentally investigated. The adsorption capacity of loess amended by HTMAC-B (LHB) and CMC-B (LCB) is 4.2 and 4 times greater than that of loess (L), respectively. It is attributed to the increase of hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic lateral interactions between the adsorbent and the adsorbate. The binary (Pb 2+ -BPA) systems may enhance BPA adsorption onto the samples by the formation of coordination bonds between the hydroxyl group of BPA and Pb 2+ ions. A cycled column test was used for investigating the transport behavior of BPA in LHB and LCB samples. The hydraulic conductivity of loess amended by the organo-bentonite (e.g., HTMAC-B, CMC-B) is generally lower than 1 × 10 −9 m/s. Especially for CMC-B amended loess, the hydraulic conductivity can be reduced to 1 × 10 −12 m/s. This guarantees the hydraulic performance of the liner system. Transport behavior of BPA in cycled column test is explained by the mobile-immobile model (MIM). Modelling results showed that loess amended by organo-bentonites can increase the breakthrough time of BPA. In comparison to loess-based liner, the breakthrough time of BPA for LHB and LCB can be increased by a factor of 10.4 and 7.5, respectively. These results indicate that organo-bentonites can serve as a potentially effective amendment for improving the adsorption of loess-based liners.

More attention has been paid to graphene as an emerging stabilizer due to its advanced mechanical properties. The aim of this work investigates the stabilizing and environmental performance of graphene as a loess stabilizer towards a cleaner treatment. The unconfined compression strength of samples with different graphene contents was measured, indicating that graphene significantly enhanced the strength of the loess. A series of microstructural techniques were used to explore the microstructure and thus explain the variation in mechanical properties of samples with different graphene content. The results show that the addition of graphene does not chemically react with the loess to produce new substances, but mainly produces physical stabilization of the loess structure. As the graphene content increases, the pore area in the sample decreases and the inter-aggregate pores tend to flatten out, which have a positive correlation with the increase in sample strength. This study also compares the results of graphene production by electrochemical exfoliation and chemical oxidation and found that graphene produced by chemical oxidation showed significant advantages in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and cumulative energy demand.

The high concentration of fulvic acid (FA) derived from natural matter in landfill leachates has generated increasing interest, as it plays a significant role in influencing the mobility of potentially toxic elements in landfill groundwater environments. This study examines the adsorption and transport behavior of FA on landfill unmodified and modified loess soil liners, analyzing key factors (initial concentration, organ-bentonite content, reaction time, and soil–water ratio) using a Box–Behnken design-based Response Surface Methodology (RSM-BBD). Additionally, the research objective includes evaluating the adsorption of lead (Pb 2 ⁺), providing a comprehensive assessment of the soil liners' performance against both organic and inorganic contaminants. RSM-BBD analysis showed that the higher the hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride-modified bentonite (HTMAC-B) content, the larger the adsorption capacity of the mixed soil for FA, which proved that FA was mainly adsorbed on the HTMAC-B. Loess + HTMAC-B exhibited the highest capacity, which can be 30.6 times that of loess. The presence of Pb 2+ notably enhanced the adsorption capacity of FA on the loess with HTMAC-B mixture. However, the increase in HTMAC-B content resulted in a decrease in the equilibrium adsorption of FA in the FA-Pb 2+ dual-contaminant system, mainly due to the reduction of adsorbed COO-Pb + and (COO) 2 -Pb complexes. When the HTMAC-B content reached 20%, the breakthrough time of Pb 2+ in the modified liner was shortened by 82%. The use of 5% content of HTMAC-B was identified as appropriate to achieve excellent retardation performance for multi-component pollutants such as organics, organic acids and potentially toxic elements. These insights contribute to understanding how geochemical mitigation of humic substances affects the mobility of potentially toxic elements, and from an engineering perspective, the alternative materials presented in this study may facilitate the construction of thinner liners that meet system requirements while exhibiting excellent adsorption performance for multi-component contaminants.

Adsorption desorption is an important behavior affecting the migration of phenanthrene in soil. In this study, three typical soils of loess, silts and silty sand in Guanzhong Basin, Shaanxi Province, China were used as adsorbents. Batch equilibrium experiments were carried out to study the adsorption desorption kinetics and isotherm of phenanthrene in different soils. Response surface method (RSM) was used to study the effects of temperature, pH, phenanthrene concentration and organic matter content on soil adsorption of phenanthrene. The results showed that after adsorption, the outline of soil particles became more blurred and the degree of cementation increased. The kinetic adsorption of phenanthrene by soil conforms to the quasi second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption desorption isotherm is nonlinear and conforms to the Freundlich model. Due to the difference of soil properties, the adsorption amount of phenanthrene by soil is loess > silty sand > silts. The thermodynamic results show that the adsorption of phenanthrene by soil is spontaneous and endothermic, and the desorption is spontaneous and exothermic. Through RSM, the interaction between phenanthrene concentration and soil organic matter in Loess and silts is significant, and the interaction between temperature and soil organic matter in silty sand is significant. Among the four factors affecting the adsorption rate of loess, silts and silty sand, soil organic matter is the most significant. The theoretical optimum adsorption rates of loess, silts and silty sand are 98.89%, 96.59% and 93.37% respectively.

Nanoparticulates released from surface soils may significantly affect contaminant fate and transport. Here, we show that nanoscale soil particles can markedly enhance the transport of BDE-209 (one of the most commonly detected polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the environment) in groundwater. Specifically, BDE-209 that is initially associated with three types of soil nanoparticles—including nanoparticles extracted from black soil (Mollisol), purple soil (Inceptisol), and loess soil (Entisol)—remains bound to the nanoparticles when migrating through saturated porous media, regardless of the types of surface coating and heterogeneity (i.e., quartz sand, humic-acid-coated sand, and goethite-coated sand). Accordingly, the mobility of BDE-209 is determined by the mobility of the soil nanoparticles. The nanoparticles of black soils have the highest mobility, whereas those of loess soil display the lowest mobility, because the presence of calcite enhances the deposition of the nanoparticles due to increased particle aggregation and ripening. The coating of humic acid on quartz sand enhances the mobility of all three soil nanoparticles (and therefore, BDE-209) due to increased electrostatic repulsion, steric hindrance, and the blocking of deposition sites, while the coating of goethite subdues the mobility due to decreased electrostatic repulsion and deposition in the primary minimum (i.e., positively charged surface heterogeneity). Findings in this study highlight the important roles of soil nanoparticles in mediating contaminant behaviors and point to the potential risks of PBDE spreading in groundwater, even though the common wisdom is that these chemicals are highly immobile and PBDE contamination is restricted to surface soils.

Loess stabilizer technologies offer potential solutions for mitigating soil erosion. However, it faces significant challenges, including scalability, environmental compatibility and multifunctional integration. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel strategies to mitigate soil erosion problem. In this study, a multifunctional polymer soil stabilizer (MPSS) was synthesized through modified nano-zinc oxide copolymerizing with acrylic acid and as an effective additive to prevent soil erosion. Loess particle size, bulk density, porosity, and microstructural changes during material addition were studied systematically. It was worth noting that addition of 0.50 % MPSS to soil extends the soil anti-scouring duration to 83.0 h with erosion degree decreased from 100 % to 45.00 % (a 55.00 % reduction), representing an increase in anti-erosion time by a factor of 1000. The Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of loess was increased by a factor of 14, respectively. It exhibited better water retention, plant compatibility and soil structure stability. In summary, we provided a novel and efficient synthetic strategy for polymeric soil stabilizers. The MPSS was expected to be applied to control soil erosion, contributing to soil-water resources, agricultural development and environmental remediation.
