We report an eco-friendly approach to improve the hydrophobicity of jute fabrics via horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-catalyzed covalent grafting of butyl acrylate (BA) and 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFBMA). Hydrophobic vinyl monomers were grafted onto the exposed lignin molecules of the jute surface by free-radical polymerization in the presence of a HRP/H2O2/acetylacetone (ACAC) system. Coupling onto the lignin–jute surface was demonstrated by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (solid-state 19F NMR), elemental analyses, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hydrophobicity and oleophobicity of modified jute fabrics was estimated in terms of contact angle and wetting time. The results indicated that it was essential to attain vinyl monomers grafting polymerization onto jute surfaces in a HRP/H2O2/ACAC system. Moreover, the grafting of vinyl monomers led to hydrophobicity increases of 53.86% and 61.03% in the contact angle of grafted jute fabrics with BA and HFBMA when compared with unmodified jute fabrics, respectively. Both vinyl monomers demonstrated high propensity to be polymerized by HRP in the presence of H2O2, and acquired the ability to act as high-performance composites with hydrophobic resins.

Enzymatic grafting of synthetic molecules onto lignins provides a mild and eco-friendly alternative for the functionalization of lignocellulosic materials. In this study, laccase-mediated grafting of octadecylamine (OA) onto lignin-rich jute fabrics was investigated for enhancing the surface hydrophobicity. First, the lignins in jute fabrics were isolated and analyzed in the macromolecular level by MALDI–TOF MS, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and HSQC-NMR. Then, the surface of jute fabrics was characterized by FT-IR, XPS, and SEM. Subsequently, the nitrogen content of jute fabrics was determined by the micro-Kjeldahl method, and the grafting percentage (Gp) and grafting efficiency (GE) of the enzymatic reaction were calculated. Finally, the surface hydrophobicity of the jute fabrics was estimated by contact angle and wetting time measurements. The results indicate that the OA monomers were successfully grafted onto the lignin moieties on the jute fiber surface by laccase with Gp and GE values of 0.712% and 10.571%, respectively. Moreover, the modified jute fabrics via OA-grafting showed an increased wetting time of 18.5 min and a contact angle of 116.72°, indicating that the surface hydrophobicity of the jute fabrics increased after the enzymatic grafting modification with hydrophobic OA molecules.

Transparent jute fiber (TJF) was prepared from delignified jute fiber (DJF) and was subjected to various surface knitting densities (190 and 340 g/m2) before epoxy resin (ER) impregnation under vacuum. The preparation process and properties of TJF were evaluated. The mechanical properties and surface morphology of the jute fiber samples were also studied. The mechanical properties were compared with transparent coir fiber (TCF) and transparent balsa wood (TBW). Optical properties, such as surface color, optical transmittance, and visual haze, of natural jute fiber (JF) and TJF were measured to better understand the influence of delignification. The experimental results showed transparency of 51% even for dense jute fiber cloth, and the maximum transmittance was as high as 60% with a low surface density. TJF had similar tensile strength as TBW but was higher than TCF, indicating a maximum tensile strength of 43.25 MPa with a surface density of 340 g/m2. These results suggest that TJF has the potential to meet the particular optical and mechanical properties of transparent wood. Transparent jute fiber can replace transparent wood for industrial production because of the simple preparation process and lower price. Keywords:transparent jute fiber;epoxy resin;transmission;tensile strength;chromatic aberration

The preparation and performance control of the cellulose membrane are one of the hot topics in the environmentally friendly separation membrane field. In this study, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was prepared by microwave-assisted acidic hydrolysis of cellulose obtained from jute, followed by the use of a mixture ofN-methylmorpholine-N-oxide and water as a solvent to obtain the homogeneous casting liquid, which was scraped and subsequently immersed in the coagulation bath to form a smooth and dense cellulose membrane. During membrane formation, the crystal structure of MCC changed from type I to type II, but the chemical structure remained unchanged. The mechanical strength and separation performance of the membrane were related to the content of MCC in the casting liquid. When the content of MCC was about 7%, the tensile strength of the membrane reached a maximum value of 13.49 MPa, and the corresponding elongation at break was 68.12%. The water flux (J) and rejection rate (R) for the bovine serum albumin were 19.51 L/(m2·h) and 95.37%, respectively, under an optimized pressure of 0.2 MPa. In addition, the coagulation bath had a significant effect on the membrane separation performance, and J and R were positively and negatively correlated with the polarity of the coagulation bath. Among them, it was note-worthy that J and R of membrane formed in ethanol were 33.95 L/(m2·h) and 91.43%, separately. Compared with water as a coagulation bath, J was increased by 74% at the situation and R was roughly equivalent, showing better separation performance. More importantly, the relationship between the structure and separation performances has also been studied preliminarily. This work provides certain guidance for the preparation of high-performance MCC membranes. Keywords:jute;microcrystalline cellulose;cellulose membrane;microwave-assisted hydrolysis;separation

Cellulose fibers deposited with metallic nanoparticles as one kind of renewable, biocompatible and antimicrobial nanomaterials evoke much interest because of their versatility in various applications. Herein, for the first time, a facile, simple and rapid method was developed to fabricate TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical) selectively oxidized jute fibers in situ deposited with silver nanoparticles in the absence of reducing reagents. The average size of silver nanoparticles deposited on the fibers is 50.0 ± 2.0 nm by microwave heating for 5 min and 90.0 ± 4.7 nm for 10 min heating sample, respectively. The versatile jute–silver nanoparticles nanocomposites with superior thermal stability and high crystallinity would be particularly useful for applications in the public health care and biomedical fields.

Jute ( Corchorus olitorius L.) leaves have long been consumed as an edible vegetable in Asia and Africa, which are underexplored sources of bioactive polysaccharides. This study employed sequential solvent extraction (water, oxalate, acid, alkali) to isolate four novel polysaccharide fractions (WJP, OJP, HJP, AJP) and evaluated their structural, functional, and antioxidant properties. Polysaccharides were characterized for chemical composition, monosaccharide profile, molecular weight, and microstructure. Functional properties (oil/water holding, emulsification, rheology) and DPPH/ABTS scavenging activities were assessed against commercial citrus pectin (CP). All polysaccharide fractions were RG-I dominant with solvent-dependent features. WJP had the highest M w (3.30 × 10 6 Da) and viscosity; OJP showed peak emulsification linked to high DE (27.79 %); HJP exhibited superior emulsion stability from extensive branching; AJP contained abundant protein (12.70 %) and phenolics (59.46 mg GAE/g), driving exceptional antioxidant capacity. Functionally, jute leaf polysaccharides surpassed CP in OHC, WHC, and emulsification. Outperforming antioxidant activities of AJP and WJP correlated with protein-phenolic content and structural features. Solvent-directed sequential extraction yields jute polysaccharides with customizable functionality. OJP (emulsifier), WJP (thickener), and AJP/WJP (antioxidants) offer sustainable, high-performance alternatives to commercial hydrocolloids, contingent on further purification.

The horseradish peroxidase (HRP)/hydrogen peroxide system can catalyze the free-radical polymerization of aromatic compounds such as lignins. In this study, to improve the hydrophilicity of lignin-rich jute fabrics, acrylamide (AM) was grafted onto their surface by HRP-mediated oxidative polymerization. The resulting AM-lignin graft polymer in jute fibers, from which the lignin was removed by extracting with dioxane, was characterized by gel permeation chromatography, elemental analysis, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that AM was grafted to the jute fiber by HRP . Furthermore, the hydrophilicity of the fabrics was determined in terms of wetting time, balance moisture regain, and static contact angle. Compared to the control sample, the wetting time, balance moisture regain, and static contact angle of the grated fabrics varied from 11.62 min to 7.45 min, from 9.78% to 10.40%, and from 122.30° to 92.84°, respectively, indicating that the hydrophilicity of the raw jute fabric improved. The modification conditions of the HRP-catalyzed AM-grafting reaction were optimized in terms of the nitrogen content of the jute fabrics.

Besides excellent adsorption performance of adsorbents, the disposal of spent adsorbents should be considered for environmental concern. In this study, a new all-biomass double network Jute/sodium alginate (Jute/SA) gel is prepared via the simple dripping technique. 80 wt% water of Jute/SA hydrogel endows the adsorbent with high permeability for heavy metal ions diffusion onto internal adsorption sites. The Jute/SA gel adsorbent can efficiently remove heavy metals from melting wastewater, especially Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ . The adsorbent shows high adsorption capacities of 291.3 mg g −1 for Pb 2+ and 149.9 mg g −1 for Cd 2+ at 298 K. The adsorption equilibrium reaches within 45 min for 45 mg L −1 Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ using 1 g L −1 adsorbent, showing 98% removal efficiency of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ . Moreover, the removal efficiencies in 45 min reach up to 99.1% for Pb 2+ (7.539 mg L −1 ) and 89.9% for Cd 2+ (4.743 mg L −1 ) in actual melting effluent containing Zn (43.95 mg L −1 ), Cu (16.50 mg L −1 ), Mn (19.24 mg L −1 ), Ni (4.90 mg L −1 ) and Fe (33.75 mg L −1 ) using 1 g L −1 adsorbent. The concentrations of Pb and Cd decrease below 0.001 mg L −1 using 4 g L −1 adsorbent. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiencies for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ remain above 95% in the tenth cycle, and the desorption efficiency is up to 99%. In addition, the spent Jute/SA gel was a good organic fertilizer for plant growth. This work develops an efficient and eco-friendly biomass adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals in actual wastewater.

Lightweight, good processability and efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have captured more interest with the recognition of electromagnetic pollution hazards. Biomass-based carbon has been considered as a promising EMI shielding due to its low cost, renewability and environmental friendliness. Here, we used jute felt as the precursor of biomass carbon to fabricate the MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x )/jute composite (MXene/CJ) via a simple carbonization process and dip-and-dry method. Higher carbonization temperature and more MXene loading are conducive to electrical conductivity and shielding effectiveness (SE). When the carbonization temperature was 900 °C and dip-and-dry times was 3, the average EMI SE of 59.08 dB was achieved in 8.2–12.4 GHz (X-band) with a reflection-dominated mechanism. Besides, the composite also exhibits the potential to be used as a strain sensor. Under small pressure, the composite possessed excellent sensitivity and response time. The wrist bending, swallowing and vocal cord vibration can be monitored in real-time. These results illustrate that the MXene/CJ composite has a broad prospect in the EMI shielding and wearable electronics fields. This work also provided a feasible approach for the high-value utilization of natural biomass resources.

The jute and polypropylene fiber (PP) were formed into jute/PP composite by carding, netting and needling. Using surface dusting process, β-CD and ammonium phosphate (APP) were combined and hot pressed to form a flame-retardant layer on the surface of jute/PP composite. The results show that the thermal compression film formation on the surface of jute/PP composite after β-CD and APP compounding can significantly improve the flame retardancy and thermal stability of the jute/PP composite. When the mass ratio of β-CD to APP is 1:2 and keeping the 20wt% total content of the flame retardants, the jute/PP composite becomes extinguished after 58s combustion. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value is 26.6%, which reaches the third fire resistance according to Japan's JISD 1201-77 standard. The heat release rate and effective combustion calorific show the lowest value and the carbon residual at 700°C is increased by 11. 68%.

Natural fiber/resin composites exhibit poor fiber–matrix compatibility and easy combustion. In this study, jute-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin was used to prepare composite materials by adding marine shell powder, which is a natural non-combustible inorganic filler that originates from a variety of sources. The morphology, composition, thermal stability, combustion performance, and mechanical properties of the prepared composites were tested using several characterization methods. The results show that the marine shell powder was evenly distributed in the epoxy resin and did not affect the adhesion between the epoxy resin and the jute fiber. When 20% marine shell powder (SMJF20) was added to the jute-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composite, the pyrolytic residual content was 21.88% (60.2% higher than that without), and the maximum heat release rate was 350.75 kW/m 2 (22.8% lower than that without). The total heat release and total smoke release of SMJF20 were also 13.9% and 30% lower than that of MJF, respectively. The addition of marine shell powder did not significantly affect the tensile strength, whereas the tensile modulus of SMJF20 increased by approximately 13.9%, the fracture strain decreased by approximately 13.4%, and the bending strength and modulus decreased by approximately 12.9% and 13.0%, respectively. Marine shell powder is an ideal biomass filler for jute-fiber-reinforced epoxy resins. Highlights Jute-fiber-epoxy composites fortified with non-combustible marine shell powder. Effective filler distribution without compromising epoxy-jute fiber adhesion. 20% marine shell powder significantly reduces heat release and smoke release. Tensile strength unaffected; tensile modulus and residual content increased. Marine shell powder proves ideal for enhancing epoxy resin with jute fibers.

In this study, nonpolar octyl gallate (OG), dodecyl gallate (DG), and octadecyl gallate (OCG) were grafted onto the surface of hydrophilic jute fabrics, which were mediated by horseradish peroxidase to improve the hydrophobicity of jute materials. The gallate-grafted jutes were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and grafting percentage (Gp), and the hydrophobic properties were evaluated by water contact angle and wetting time measurements. The Gps determined by saponification was 3.91%, 5.12%, and 4.58% for OG, DG, and OCG, respectively. The nonpolar chain length and the grafting rate of the monomers had a considerable effect on the hydrophobicity of the modified jute fabrics. The as-prepared hydrophobized jute fabrics had superior interfacial compatibility with nonpolar resins, such as polypropylene (PP) and polylactic acid (PLA) making them most suitable to be utilized in the development of jute fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites. The tensile and dynamic mechanical properties of the grafted jute/PP or jute/PLA composites were improved compared with pure PP, PLA, and non-modified jute composites.
