The eco-friendly cellulosic paper-based mulch film has become an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. However, the integration of black, hydrophobic and high mechanical performances into cellulose mulch film still remained challenge. Herein, multifunctional (P/SLS-Fe/CA) black mulch film with the sandwich structure was designed by layer-by-layer assembly (LBL) strategy using filter paper (P) as the substrate, sodium lignosulfonate chelated with iron (SLS-Fe) as black factor and cellulose acetate (CA) as the hydrophobic layer. The quinone structure formed by the chelation and redox reaction between Fe 3+ and SLS induced the color change from brown-yellow to black of lignin. Moreover, the dynamic reversible physical bonds between P, SLS-Fe and CA endowed the composite with enhanced mechanical performance. The dry and wet tensile strength of the composite were 1.6 times and 21.3 times higher than pristine filter paper, respectively. The water contact angle increased from 58.4º for pure filter paper to 138.7º for the optimized P/SLS-Fe 4 /CA. Furthermore, the prepared black paper-mulch has low water vapor transmittance, heat preservation properties and good water resistance, which promote the growth of cabbage seeds. This work provides a prototype for the design and preparation of black cellulose fiber base membrane, and promotes the green development of agriculture.

Jade is most valued in Chinese culture since ancient times. For unearthed jade artifacts, the alteration color resulting from weathering effects and human activities provides information for cultural heritage conservation, archaeology, and history. Currently, the noninvasive 3-dimensional characterization of jade artifacts with high chemical and spatial resolution remains challenging. In this work, we applied femtosecond pump–probe microscopy and second harmonic generation microscopy techniques to study the black alteration of an ancient jade artifact of the late Spring and Autumn period (546 to 476 BC). The direct cause of the “mercury alteration” phenomena was discovered to be the conversion of metacinnabar from buried cinnabar in the tomb. Furthermore, a 3-dimensional optical reconstruction of the black alteration was achieved, providing a high-resolution method for analyzing the blackening mechanism without the need of sample damage. Our approach opens up new opportunities to extract microscopic spatiochemical information for a broad range of alteration colors in jade artifacts.

Salt deposits are a key challenge of solar driven desalination technology due to the fact that the evaporation rate of the system sharply deteriorates when salt accumulates. In this paper, a self-blacking aerogel (SBA) is first demonstrated with excellent deposited salt self-cleaning performance, and the self-cleaning mechanism is illustrated by the theory of chemical potential. The color of the SBA can be changed from light brown to black under the inducement of water and light, and its light absorption ability clearly increases from 34.5% to 77.0% in the whole spectral range (200–2500 nm). SBA is fabricated by quinoa bran cellulose (QBC) and graphene oxide (GO) with an evaporation rate of 3.6 kg m −2 h −1 under one sun. Importantly, for natural solar irradiation, the average evaporation rate reaches up to 12.6 and 12 kg m −2 day −1 in the period of 15 days of outdoor experiments for pure water and stimulated seawater respectively, which can meet the drinking water demand for 5–6 people. This work provides a convenient strategy to improve the salt deposit problem with high evaporation rate, and low cost for practical desalination, with water purification applications.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) is a promising strategy for sustainable water purification, but most systems still rely on external photothermal materials, many of which are costly or raise environmental concerns. Here, a fully biomass-based evaporator composed of sodium alginate (SA) and coffee grounds (CO) is developed, achieving efficient solar evaporation without any photothermal additives. The key lies in a wetting-induced blackening effect: upon water absorption, the porous hydrogel darkens significantly, increasing average solar absorbance from 71.9% to 94.4%, enabling excellent light-to-heat conversion. The evaporator features a radially aligned microstructure formed via directional freeze-drying and tunable surface wettability through Fe 3 ⁺-tannin complexation, allowing precise water transport control. As a result, it achieves a high evaporation rate of 2.2 kg m −2 h −1 with 91.2% solar-to-vapor efficiency under 1.0 sun irradiation. Furthermore, trapezoidal surface patterning induces Marangoni convection, enhancing salt resistance and light harvesting at low solar angles. Outdoor tests confirm stable freshwater output and excellent water quality. This work offers a sustainable and high-performance SDIE solution based entirely on biomass materials, demonstrating great potential for green desalination.
