Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is easy to combine with residual pesticides and affect their morphology and environmental behavior. Given that the binding mechanism between DOM and the typical herbicide glyphosate in soil is not yet clear, this study used adsorption experiments, multispectral techniques, density functional theory, and pot experiments to reveal the interaction mechanism between DOM and glyphosate on Mollisol in farmland and their impact on the environment. The results show that the adsorption of glyphosate by Mollisol is a multilayer heterogeneous chemical adsorption process. After adding DOM, due to the early formation of DOM and glyphosate complex, the adsorption process gradually became dominated by single-layer chemical adsorption, and the adsorption capacity increased by 1.06 times. Glyphosate can quench the endogenous fluorescence of humic substances through a static quenching process dominated by hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces, and instead enhance the fluorescence intensity of protein substances by affecting the molecular environment of protein molecules. The binding of glyphosate to protein is earlier, of which affinity stronger than that of humic acid. In this process, two main functional groups (C–O in aromatic groups and C–O in alcohols, ethers and esters) exist at the binding sites of glyphosate and DOM. Moreover, the complexation of DOM and glyphosate can effectively alleviate the negative impact of glyphosate on the soil. This study has certain theoretical guidance significance for understanding the environmental behavior of glyphosate and improving the sustainable utilization of Mollisol. Graphical abstract

Purpose In this study, the adsorption behavior of diuron in a typical black soil and its bioavailability to crops and earthworms were investigated by adsorption and incubation experiments, combined with biochar amendment and aging time. Methods In this study, the adsorption of diuron, and its uptake by corn and earthworms were investigated in black soil with 0.1–5% (w/w) bamboo charcoal. Results Uptake of diuron by corns was reduced by 45% in black soil aged for 0 day in 0.1–5% biochar-amended soil, the concentration of diuron in both roots and stems of corn plants tended to decrease with the increase of aging time, and the enrichment coefficient of diuron in corn also tended to decrease in 0.1–5% biochar-amended soil. When aging time was 0 day and the biochar amendment in black soil was 0.1–5%, the accumulation concentration of diuron in earthworms decreased by 63%; the bioconcentration coefficient of diuron in earthworms in black soil with different levels of biochar decreased continuously with the increase of aging time. Conclusion Biochar is an efficient adsorbent for diuron and could significantly reduce the uptake of diuron by plants and earthworms from contaminated soil. Significant correlations indicated that regression analyses could be constructed between the bioconcentration factor and sorption coefficients to predict the bioavailability of diuron residues in soil to corns and earthworms. Biochar amendment could be used as an option to immobilize diuron in soil and protect non-target organisms from diuron contamination.

To address the contamination caused by DBP residues prevalent in black soils, this study developed a multifunctional bioremediation material (BHF@DK-P3) using humic acid and iron-modified corn stover biochar in combination with microbiota. The microbiota contained DBP-degrading bacteria ( Enterobacterium sp. DNB-S2), phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria ( Enterobacter sp. P1) and potassium-solubilizing bacteria ( Paenibacillus sp. KT), and formed a good mutualistic symbiosis. In the biochar microenvironment, the microflora had lower DBP biotoxicity responses and more cell membrane formation. The addition of BHF@DK-P3 brought the structure of the DBP-contaminated black soil closer to the optimal three-phase ratio. The microbiota was able to perform their biological functions stably under both DBP stress and acid-base stress conditions. The stability of soil aggregates and the efficiency of N, P, K nutrients were improved, with available phosphorus increasing by 21.45%, available potassium by 12.54% and alkali-hydrolysable nitrogen by 14.74%. The relative abundance of copiotrophic bacterial taxa in the soil increased and the relative abundance of oligotrophic bacterial taxa decreased, providing a good mechanism for the conversion and utilization of soil nutrients. Biochar and microbiota jointly influenced soil carbon and nitrogen metabolism in response to DBP.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) accumulation threatens soil microbial communities, yet its effects on microbial assembly mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the impacts of DBP with a wide range of level (i.e., 0–40 mg kg −1 , DBP0, DBP10, DBP20, and DBP40) on microbial community assembly processes in black soil of Northeast China through 90-day controlled laboratory incubations. A framework of infer community assembly mechanisms by phylogenetic bin-based null model analysis (iCAMP) was used to qualify the soil community assembly processes. The findings demonstrated significant reductions in soil enzyme activities (urease, β-glucosidase) and respiration intensity with elevated DBP concentrations. Microbial α-diversity declined significantly, with Shannon and Chao1 indices decreased by 1.79 % and 4.78 % for DBP10, 5.29 % and 9.70 % for DBP20, 14.66 % and 10.22 % for DBP40, respectively. The abundance of bacteria linked to soil carbon and nitrogen cycling exhibited reduction, such as Nocardioides (decreased from 1.24 % to 0.52 %) and Gp6 (decreased from 5.65 % to 3.67 %). Conversely, the relative abundances of bacteria which are associated with DBP degradation increased, such as Streptomyces (Increased from 20.21 % to 34.01 %) and Bacillus (Increased from 2.49 % to 5.21 %). DBP significantly altered microbial community assembly processes. As DBP concentration increased, the relative importance of homogeneous selection rose from 45.41 % to 55.63 %, while dispersal limitation declined from 48.89 % to 35.09 %. DBP homogenizes environmental conditions and a transition from neutral diffusion dynamics to pressure-driven selection, favoring taxa adapted to DBP degradation. This study advances understanding of DBP’s ecological impacts on soil microbial communities and their assembly dynamics.

Long-term input of agricultural chemicals such as pesticides into the soil can increase soil pollution, thereby affecting the productivity and quality of black soil. Triazine herbicide atrazine has been shown to have long-lasting residual effects in black soil. The atrazine residues affected soil biochemical properties, further leading to microbial metabolism restriction. It is necessary to explore the strategies to mitigate the limitations on microbial metabolism in atrazine-contaminated soils. Here, we evaluated the effect of the atrazine on microbial nutrient acquisition strategies as indicated by extracellular enzyme stoichiometry (EES) in four black soils. Atrazine degradation in soil followed the first-order kinetics model across various concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 mg kg −1 . We found that the atrazine was negatively correlated with the EES for C-, N-, and P-acquisition. Vector lengths and angles decreased and increased significantly with an increase of atrazine concentration in tested black soils except for Lishu soils. Moreover, the vector angles were >45° for tested four black soils, indicating that atrazine residue had the greatest P-limitation on soil microorganisms . Interestingly, microbial C- and P-limitations with different atrazine concentrations showed a strong linear relationship, especially in Qiqihar and Nongan soils. Atrazine treatment significantly negatively affected microbial metabolic limitation. Soil properties and EES interaction explained up to 88.2% for microbial C-/P-limitation. In conclusion, this study confirms the EES as a useful method in evaluating the effects of pesticides on microbial metabolic limitations.

Understanding the distribution of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is necessary for future risk evaluation of DEHP in agricultural soils. This study used 14 C-labeled DEHP to examine its volatilization, mineralization, extractable residues, and non-extractable residues (NERs) incubated in Chinese typical red and black soil with/without Brassica chinensis L. Results showed that after incubated for 60 days, 46.3% and 95.4% of DEHP were mineralized or transformed into NERs in red and black soil, respectively. The distribution of DEHP in humic substances as NER descended in order: humin > fulvic acids > humic acids. DEHP in black soil was more bioavailable, with 6.8% of initial applied radioactivity left as extractable residues at the end of incubation when compared with red soil (54.5%). Planting restrained the mineralization of DEHP by 18.5% and promoted the extractable residues of DEHP by 1.5% for black soil, but no such restrain was observed in red soil. These findings provide valuable information for understanding the distribution of DEHP in different soils and develop the understanding for the risk assessments of PAEs in typical soils. Nanoparticulates released from surface soils may significantly affect contaminant fate and transport. Here, we show that nanoscale soil particles can markedly enhance the transport of BDE-209 (one of the most commonly detected polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the environment) in groundwater. Specifically, BDE-209 that is initially associated with three types of soil nanoparticles—including nanoparticles extracted from black soil (Mollisol), purple soil (Inceptisol), and loess soil (Entisol)—remains bound to the nanoparticles when migrating through saturated porous media, regardless of the types of surface coating and heterogeneity (i.e., quartz sand, humic-acid-coated sand, and goethite-coated sand). Accordingly, the mobility of BDE-209 is determined by the mobility of the soil nanoparticles. The nanoparticles of black soils have the highest mobility, whereas those of loess soil display the lowest mobility, because the presence of calcite enhances the deposition of the nanoparticles due to increased particle aggregation and ripening. The coating of humic acid on quartz sand enhances the mobility of all three soil nanoparticles (and therefore, BDE-209) due to increased electrostatic repulsion, steric hindrance, and the blocking of deposition sites, while the coating of goethite subdues the mobility due to decreased electrostatic repulsion and deposition in the primary minimum (i.e., positively charged surface heterogeneity). Findings in this study highlight the important roles of soil nanoparticles in mediating contaminant behaviors and point to the potential risks of PBDE spreading in groundwater, even though the common wisdom is that these chemicals are highly immobile and PBDE contamination is restricted to surface soils.

The atrazine (ATR) is extensively used in dryland crops like corn and sorghum in black soil region of Northeast China, posing ecological risks due to toxic metabolites. Vermicompost are known for soil organic pollution remediation but their role in pesticide degradation in black soil remains understudied. The influence of vermicompost on the microbial degradation pathway of atrazine was assessed in this study. Although vermicompost didn't significantly boost atrazine removal, they notably aided in primary metabolite degradation, hydroxyatrazine (HYA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA), and deethylatrazine (DEA), reducing their content by 38.67 %. They also altered the soil microbial community structure, favoring atrazine-degrading bacteria like Proteobacteria , Firmicutes , and Actinobacteria . Five secondary degradation products were identified in vermicompost treatments. Atrazine degradation occurred via dechlorination, dealkylation, and deamination pathways mainly by Nocardioidacea , Streptomycetaceae , Bacillaceae , Sphingomonadaceae , Comamonadaceae and Nitrososphaeraceae . pH and available nitrogen (AN) influenced microbial community structure and atrazine degradation, correlating with vermicompost application rates. Future black soil remediation should optimize application rates based on atrazine content and soil properties.
