Constellating stardom, Berlin-style: Bowie, Christiane F, Hedi Slimane

Susan Ingram

This article charts the importance of Berlin in the constellation of Bowie’s success and probes what stardom means in the context of Berlin. It links what Berlin meant to Bowie with what Bowie’s connection to the city has meant to Berlin in its establishing itself as the ‘poor but sexy’ clubbing capital of Europe. In order to get at the stylistic implications of this form of stardom, I bring together Bowie’s Berlin experiences with those of two countercultural personalities the city brought him together with, who are black stars in their own right: Christiane Felscherinow and Hedi Slimane. In ascertaining that Felscherinow and Slimane share with Bowie a dark aesthetic, which is also a politics and ethics of time and space, I probe the German Romantic lineage of the concepts of constellation and elective affinity and their critical potential via the writings of Berlin-born Walter Benjamin to show that this aesthetic is characteristic of the kind of stardom that the city of Berlin is struggling to maintain in the face of gentrifying pressures. Its appeal, I conclude, lies in the potential it offers for a lifestyle counter to the hegemonic, heteronormative, nuclear-family one of bourgeois modernity.

Evaluating the Potential Value of Natural Product Cuminic Acid against Plant Pathogenic Fungi in Cucumber

Yong Wang,Jie Zhang,Yang Sun,Juntao Feng,Xing Zhang

Fusarium wilt and anthracnose are two major diseases which limit the yield and quality of cucumber worldwide. Cuminic acid was extracted from the seed ofCuminum cyminumL. The mean EC50values of cuminic acid for inhibiting mycelial growth and zoospore germination of fiveFusarium oxysporumf. sp.cucumerinumstrains were 25.66 ± 3.02 μg/mL and 15.99 ± 2.19 μg/mL, and of fourColletotrichum lagenarium(Pass.) Ellis and Halsted strains were 29.53 ± 3.18 μg/mL and 18.41 ± 2.78 μg/mL, respectively. In greenhouse experiments, cuminic acid at 2000 μg/mL exhibited 70.77% protective and 62.63% curative efficacies againstF. oxysporum, and 65.43% protective and 55.46% curative efficacies againstC. lagenarium. Moreover, the translocation behavior of cuminic acid, determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), showed that it could be readily absorbed and transported upward and downward in cucumber. Importantly, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and pyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities of cucumber leaves treated with cuminic acid increased significantly. All results indicated that cuminic acid showed antifungal activity, and could be used as a botanical fungicide in disease management. This study encourages further investigation on the mechanism of action of cuminic acid and the development of alternative antifungal drugs. Keywords:botanical fungicide;cuminic acid;cucumber;F. oxysporum;C. lagenarium;control efficacy

Phenyllactic acid primed reactive oxygen species metabolism and phenylpropanoid pathway to induce resistance against Alternaria alternata in Malus domestica

Shuang Min,Jiaxin Liu,Canying Li,Tian Gao,Yajun Wang,Yonghong Ge

Black spot rot, caused by the pathogen Alternaria alternata , is a prevalent disease in apple cultivation. The present study investigated the effects of phenyllactic acid (PLA) immersion on black spot rot in apples and elucidated the potential mechanisms underlying its action. Results revealed that 1.00 g L -1 PLA inhibited the lesion development in A. alternata- inoculated apples. PLA resulted in a decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) content, while simultaneously increasing the levels of H 2 O 2 , ascorbic acid (AsA), and reduced glutathione (GSH) in apples. PLA also induced the increase in gene expressions and enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbic acid reductase (DHAR), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H), 4-coumarate/coenzyme A ligase (4CL), and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) in apples. Moreover, inoculation of both PLA-treated and control fruit with A. alternata led to a further increase in the levels of H 2 O 2 , GSH, and AsA, along with enhanced gene expressions and enzymatic activities of CAT, SOD, DHAR, GR, APX , MDHAR, POD, PPO, C4H, 4CL and PAL, compared to un-inoculated fruit. Additionally, PLA dipping increased total phenols and flavonoids contents in apples, and inoculation with A. alternata further augmented the accumulation of these bioactive compounds. Furthermore, PLA-treated fruit displayed a more rapid response to A. alternata inoculation compared to control fruit, characterized by heightened enzymatic activity, gene expression, and metabolite content. Collectively, PLA has the potential to stimulate disease resistance against A. alternata in apples through regulating major enzyme activities, gene expressions, and metabolites contents involved in reactive oxygen species and phenylpropane metabolisms.

Natural products-based: Synthesis and antifungal activity evaluation of novel L-pyroglutamic acid analogues

Ai Likun,Fu Shiqi,Li Yong,Zuo Mei,Huang Wen,Huang Jian,Jin Zhichao,Chen Yang

Botanical pesticides are one of the sources of third-generation pesticides, which have received much attention at home and abroad in recent years due to their degradable and pollution-free advantages in nature. This article explored a concise approach toward synthesizing a series of novel L-pyroglutamic acid analogues from L-hydroxyproline. Furthermore, bioassay studies of these sulfonyl ester derivatives against Pyricularia oryzae, Fusarium graminearum, Alternaria brassicae, Valsa mali, and Alternaria alternariae showed moderate antifungal activity. For instance, C08a and C08l provide potential lead agents for controlling Fusarium graminearum because of their inhibitory activity.
