The common use of peroxides in the remediation of malodorous black water may lead to the activation of heavy metals in sediment when eliminating black and odorous substances. The mechanisms of heavy metal interactions with dissolved organic matter (DOM) in response to in situ capping have not been elucidated, but this information could guide the optimization of capping materials. We developed a capping material consisting of hydrothermally carbonized sediment (HCS), hydrated magnesium carbonate (HMC) and sodium percarbonate (SPC) and used microcosm experiments to investigate the dynamics of Mn and Cu at the sediment–water interface in malodorous black water. The results showed that HCS, HMC and SPC contributed multiple functions of mechanical protection, chemical isolation and oxygen provision to the new caps. HMC promoted the conversion of Mn/Cu into carbonate minerals. The optimal mass proportions were 25 % HCS, 60 % HMC and 15 % SPC based on the mixture design. In situ capping altered the fate and transformation of metals in the sediment-overlying water profile in the short term through Mn immobilization and Cu activation. The complexation of Cu(II) ions was significantly stronger than that of Mn(II) ions. In situ capping had a significant effect on the order of complexation of different fluorescent DOM molecules with Mn(II)/Cu(II) ions: microbial byproducts and fulvic acid-like components were preferentially complexed with Cu(II) ions after capping, while phenolic and humic acid-like components preferentially interacted with Mn(II) ions. Humic-like components bound to Cu were affected the most by capping treatment, whereas protein-like components were relatively weakly affected. Our study provides valuable knowledge on the impact of in situ capping on DOM–metal complexes.

Black-odorous waters are an increasingly common phenomenon characterized by excessive levels of nutrients, the formation of metal sufide precipitates, volatile sulfurous compounds, low dissolved oxygen and high chemical oxygen demand. Black-odorous waters frequently occur in lake and river systems where inputs have restricted circulation. The key remediation issue is the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Here, we present a novel aeration-adsorption system using fiber balls and we study treatment parameters and removal mechanism. Kinetics and changes of the solid phase were followed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Results show complete removal of ammonia N, initially at 31 mg/L, and 92.8% removal of total nitrogen, initially at 29 mg/L, after a 24 h reaction time at pH 9.67. At pH 5.67 and 9.67, total phosphorus and phosphate could be significantly reduced by 90–92% at 3.2–5.2 mg/L after 24 h. Treatment met China’s integrated wastewater discharge standards, demonstrating an effective and robust treatment capability. First-order and second-order kinetic models provided a good fit to the treatment data, indicating physical and chemical adsorption were involved in the treatment reactions. The reaction mechanism involved hydrogen substitution and binding to oxygen. These results present a cost effective and robust approach for the removal of N and P from black, odorous water, providing opportunity to abate environmental contamination.

Ferrous sulfide (FeS) and humic acid (HA) are typical black substances in black bloom water. Based on the strong reduction ability of FeS and the photosensitivity of HA, the transformation of toxic organic pollutants by the combination of FeS and HA (HA-FeS) is not clear. In order to explore this issue, the stability of HA-FeS was analyzed by measuring the hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential of HA-FeS, and then the removal mechanism and possible degradation pathway of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) by HA-FeS under continuous illumination were discussed. The results showed that the hydrodynamic diameter of FeS was reduced and the stability of FeS was improved, and it was easily suspended after FeS combined with the HA in the water. The combination of HA and FeS promoted the removal of TBBPA in water, no matter it was in the presence or absence of light. Besides, compared with the absence of light, the removal efficiency of TBBPA was improved by HA-FeS with continuous light. There were two reasons for the increase in the removal efficiency of TBBPA by HA-FeS. On the one hand, Fe 2+ and S 2− of HA-FeS had more stable chemical valence and obtained better reducibility under continuous light than that in the dark. On the other hand, light induced the release of active species ( O 2 − , 1 O 2 , and OH) in the HA-FeS composite colloid and further promoted the degradation of organic pollutants. Therefore, the black substances (FeS) of black blooms may play a beneficial role in the removal of pollutants under sunlight.

Black-odour water with organic compounds and heavy metals caused by domestic and industrial activities has aroused people's attention in recent years, yet little is known about the ecological effects on aquatic organisms, especially microorganisms in sediments. To explore the response of microbial communities to environmental factors, the community and metabolites of nine river sediments with different pollution in Dongguan city, China were investigated using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and liquid chromatography tandem-mass. The results revealed that the composition and structure of sedimentary microbial communities significantly changed in rivers with varying pollution levels. Cyanobacteria were the most abundant organisms in the sediment of black-odorous rivers, while the relative abundance of Thaumarchaeota was gradually increased with the river quality gets better. The relative abundance of organic acids (including amino acids), alcohols, esters, and ketones associated with microbial metabolism in sediments of polluted rivers was increased. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing-based molecular ecological network analysis indicated that the interactions amongst bacteria were enhanced in severely contaminated communities. Sphingomonadaceae and Cyanobacteria have important roles in bacterial community structures of polluted rivers and those with ongoing treatment. The correlation analysis showed significant metal resistance and/or tolerance of the following bacteria species Thalassiosira weissflogii , Aminicenantes bacterium clone OPB95 , ‘Candidatus Halomonas phosphatis’ , and archaeal species Methanolinea and unidentified Thermoplasmata . These results indicated that sedimentary microbial communities may shift in composition and structure, as well as their interaction network, to adapt and resist environmental contamination and promote restoration.

Background Energy-efficient remediation technology for black and odorous water bodies in cold and salty areas is in high demand. This study experimentally investigated the performance of a novel integrated process at lab and pilot scales, in both batch and continuous-flow modes, to treat black and odorous lake water from Daqing City, China. Methods In 25-liter batch tests, relevant influence conditions were optimized. The 756-liter batch tests confirmed these results. Meanwhile, a continuous flow experiment was added to improve the removal rate of pollutants further. Significant findings In 25-liter batch tests maximum removal rates for COD, NH 4 + -N, TP, and TN were 78.6 %, 72.3 %, 79.1 %, and 76.3 %, respectively, using reed plants and carbon fiber grass with L 2 bacteria under optimal conditions (two cfb per floating-island unit, pH 8, DO of 4 mg/L, 25–30 °C, microbial enhancer of 0.75 g/flu). The 756-liter batch tests confirmed these results, achieving improved removal rates of 80.4 %, 75.1 %, 75.5 %, and 78.4 % over 30 days. Continuous-flow tests yielded maximum removal rates of 85.2 %, 89.5 %, 87.4 %, and 90.1 % at an 8-hour HRT, demonstrating superior performance under short retention times. The study revealed interactions with the key biological processes during remediation. The proposed costs for this method indicate high feasibility for field applications.

The large amount of municipal wastewater discharged into urban rivers sometimes exceeds the rivers’ self-purification capacity leading to black-odorous polluted water. Electro-flocculation has emerged as a powerful remediation technology. Electro-flocculation in a bubble column tower with a bipolar electrode (BPE) was tested in an attempt to overcome the high resistance and weak gas-floatation observed with a monopolar electrode (MPE) in treating such water. The BPE reactor tested had a Ti/Ta 2 O 5 -IrO2 anode and a graphite cathode with an iron or aluminum bipolar electrode suspended between them. It was tested for its ability to reduce turbidity, phosphate and sulphion and to increase the concentration of dissolved oxygen. The inclusion of the bipolar electrode was found to distinctly improved the system’s conductivity. The system’s electro-flocculation and electrical floatation removed turbidity, phosphate and sulphion completely, and the dissolved oxygen level improved from 0.29 to 6.28 mg/L. An aluminum bipolar electrode performed better than an iron one. Changes in the structure of the microbial community confirmed a significant improvement in water quality.

Black-odor water, which is caused by the excessive accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus in water, is a significant problem. Immobilized microorganisms are considered to be an effective technical solution, but there are still many key parameters to be determined, such as organic matter dissolution, insufficient stability, and insufficient phosphorus removal capacity, among other problems. In this study, the optimum raw material ratios of immobilized microorganism gel beads were determined by means of a response surface experiment. The optimal ratio of raw materials was 5% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), 1% sodium alginate (SA), and 6% bacterial powder. In addition, the nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance of the materials was improved by loading inorganic compounds, such as 0.5 wt.% zeolite, 0.5 wt.% iron powder, and 0.2 wt.% activated carbon. Tolerance analysis determined that these gel beads could maintain a good performance in a series of harsh environments, such as during intense agitation, at high temperatures, and at low pH values, etc. The total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies were 88.9%, 90%, and 95%.

Black-odorous water (BOW) in urban areas poses significant risks to water safety and human health. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a critical parameter for the control and monitoring of BOW. However, traditional methods for COD determination are expensive, time-consuming, and involve the use of hazardous chemicals. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and transitional metal particles (Cu, Ni) were used as working electrode materials for facile on-site determination of COD in BOW. Three composite materials (rGO/Cu, rGO/Ni, and rGO/Cu/Ni) were synthesized by one-step chemical reduction with different ratios, and their microstructure and chemical composition were characterized. Glucose solution and real water were used to evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of the different sensors. The ternary composite (rGO/Cu/Ni) screen-printed electrode sensor demonstrated excellent performance in COD analysis, with a low limit of detection (18.9 mg L−1), a broad linear detection range from 53 to 1500 mg L−1, and a 1.61% relative error for real water samples. The testing results were highly consistent with those obtained using the standard chromium sulfate method. This study offers promising prospects for the mass production of cost-effective COD electrochemical sensors, facilitating real-time, on-site monitoring of water bodies in major urban areas.
