In this study, carbonyl iron based magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) with 12-hydroxy stearic acid (12-HSA) oil solutions as carrier were fabricated. Rheological performance of the magnetorheological fluid, including viscosity, yielding, magnetic hysteresis, dynamic modulus as well as thixotropic behavior, was investigated by using a rotational rheometer equipped with a magnetic device. It is found that the 12-HSA gave rise to an increase in the off-state viscosity and shear stress in the absence of magnetic field, indicating gel structure developed in the suspensions. This gel network associating with field-induced particle structure lead a substantial yield stress and dynamic modulus. The hysteresis test validated that the gel like network had a certain effect on maintaining the aggregation structure after removing the magnetic field. Dynamic oscillatory tests showed that 12-HSA solution based MRF exhibits solidlike property in the absence of magnetic field. The dependence of plateau value G′ on magnetic field showed relationship of natural logarithm. Regarding to the thixotropy, a longer recovery progress was observed in 12-HSA solution based MRF due to the restriction of gel network. The sedimentation measurements revealed that the strong flocculation could be formed by 12-HSA and enhances the stability of suspensions.

Marine oil spills pose a serious threat to the marine ecological environment. Phase-selective organogelators (PSOGs) are ideal candidates for oil spill gelation when used in combination with a mechanical recovery method. However, the toxicity of an organic solvent carrier has become a key problem when it is applied in the remediation of marine oil pollution. In this study, through an inexpensive and nontoxic ionic cross-linking and freeze-drying method, we successfully developed composite oil gelling agents that used a biomass sodium alginate aerogel as the carrier of 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA). Simultaneously, carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNF-C) with large specific surface area and graphene oxide (GO) with excellent mechanical properties as reinforcing fillers were combined with an alginate matrix. 12-HSA, as a green and inexpensive organic gelator, was uniformly loaded on the aerogels by vacuum impregnation. The sodium alginate aerogel was capable of absorbing and storing oil due to its three-dimensional network skeleton and high porosity. Rheological studies have demonstrated that the organic gelator 12-HSA can be released from the aerogel substrate and self-assemble to form an oleogel with the absorbed oil quickly. The synergistic effect between absorption and congelation endows the composite oil gelling agent with efficient oil spill recovery capability. Based on eco-friendly, biodegradable, and simple synthesis methods, this composite oil gelling agent shows great potential for application in marine oil spill recovery.

During frequent transportation, the marine environment is continuously exposed to significant threats from crude oil and organic solvent leakage. Non-covalent self-assembly of organogelator on the adsorbent matrix to fix non-polar solvents is an efficient and sustainable remediation method. This contribution proposes an organogelator-adsorbent composite by blending aluminum 12-hydroxystearate (Al HSA) and expanded graphite (EG) during lignin-based polyurethane foaming. Al HSA molecule synergizes with EG to modulate the shape (hexagonal), oil retention, mechanical property, and hydrophobicity (water contact angle = 151.3°) of the lignin-based polyurethane foam (LPUF) skeleton. Al HSA-LPUF (OTS-LPUF/EAH) superhydrophobic foam exhibits sorption capacity up to 13.2–53.0 g g −1 in various oils and organic solvents. From the microscopic morphology, the Al HSA on the skeleton self-assembles into spherical nanoclusters driven by hydrogen bonding, realizing the capturing of oils and organic solvents. Even after 20 cycles, the foam still has a high oil/water separation capacity and mechanical performance. OTS-LPUF/EAH also shows improved flame retardancy and a 61 % reduction in total smoke release (TSR) compared to pristine LPUF.

The efficient surface modification of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) particles with different sizes was first carried out with “water only method” (Appl. Surf. Sci. 2018, 447, 664–672) developed in our group using 12-hydroxy stearic acid (12-HSA) as the modifier. The 12-HSA-modified TiO 2 particles with different sizes were then used to explore their effect on the mechanical and thermal properties of a thermoplastic polyurethane urea (TPUU) elastomer with superior mechanical and thermal properties produced newly in our lab using nonsymmetric alicyclic diisocyanate and diamine. Orthogonal experimental results showed that the order of impact of each factor on the modification efficiency of TiO 2 particles was: Temperature > time > modifier content. It was found that, in the nanometer (≤100 nm) range, smaller particles were more helpful to enhance the tensile strength of the TPUU elastomer, while larger ones to increase more significantly the elongation at break. Besides, the TiO 2 /polyurethane urea nanocomposites exhibited much better thermomechanical performance than the pristine TPUU elastomer, and the thermomechanical performance of the nanocomposites increased with decreasing particle size.

This study aimed at improving the physical stability of the electrospinning fiber aerogel (EFA) templates and the templated oleogels (EFA-O), and study the effect of hydrophobic treatment on the properties of the templates and oleogels. The protein thermal denaturation and 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA) loading were utilized to hydrophobically modify the electrospun fiber aerogel templates. Both of the two treatments increased the average fiber diameter, and 12-HSA loading made the EFA obtained a stable and lasting hydrophobicity (water contact angle was around 130°). Meanwhile, both hydrophobic treatments improved the stress feedback of EFA, and thermal denaturation could maintain the excellent resilient performance. The oil adsorption and holding capacity of EFA reached 48.77 g/g and 85.73 %, respectively, and the two low-degree hydrophobic methods were combined to prepare compositely treated EFA-O with excellent performances. The hydrophobic EFA framework supported the 3D structure of oleogels, where the fiber diameter could reach 464.01 nm. Thermal denaturation was beneficial to improve the rheological properties, and 12-HSA loading significantly strengthened the texture properties. Hydrophobic treatments could also effectively inhibit the release of free fatty acids (down to 23.84 %) or curcumin (down to 14.19 %) in EFA-O, which was promising for constructing stable controlled-release systems. The combination of the two treatments can achieve complementary modification effects and lead to better physical and chemical properties. This modification method was not only an effective way to strengthen the performances of EFA, but it met the edibility and safety requirements of oleogel preparation.
