1T-phase molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is considered to be one of the most promising candidates to substitute noble metals in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Fabricating single layer 1T-phase MoS2 with abundant sulfur vacancies as well as good stability to further enhance catalytic performance remains a challenge. Herein, we develop an efficient in situ TMA cation ((CH3)4N+) intercalation method to produce 1T-phase MoS2. The obtained MoS2 nanosheets comprise about 81% 1T-phase and abundant sulfur vacancies (>12%), as verified by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-HAADF-STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), etc. In addition, the surface of as-prepared ST-MoS2 is negatively charged, making it very stable in aqueous solution. The as-prepared ST-MoS2 exhibits excellent electrochemical HER performance with a low over-potential and a small Tafel slope as well as superior cycling stability. Furthermore, it is an excellent co-catalyst when coupled with CdS nanowires to form a CdS/ST-MoS2 heterojunction photocatalyst for the HER under visible light irradiation. It achieves a maximum H2 production rate and apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of approximately 1187 μmol mg−1 h−1 and 73.4%, respectively, which are significantly higher than those of reported CdS/MoS2 photocatalysts.

Water electrolysis is an effective method of obtaining hydrogen energy, which is the key to achieve the global “carbon neutrality” goal. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with a layered structure is considered to be a competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst. However, until now, metal-atom-modified 1T-phase MoS2 with rich edge active sites has rarely been reported. Herein, we first report Co and Al co-optimized 1T-phase MoS2 (CA-1T-MoS2) with rich edge active sites using a simple one-step ball-milling method. The CA-1T-MoS2 exhibits an outstanding HER performance with an overpotential value of 102 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH. The density functional theory (DFT) results prove that the introduction of Co and Al atoms on the rich edges of 1T-MoS2 provides rich active sites, improves the electrical conductivity, accelerates the distortion of H2O to generate H* and reduces the adsorption energy of hydrogen. Thus, CA-1T-MoS2 exhibits a prominent HER performance. This work provides a novel strategy for the simple preparation of metal-atom-modified 2D transition-metal sulfide HER catalysts with rich edge active sites.

The modified MoS 2 -based material, with a higher conductivity and rich active sites, is promising one of a variety of nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, the bulk MoS 2 is exfoliated to form small-size MoS 2 clusters by pulse laser, which are diluted in solid sulfur and further to form porous film. The 1T phase MoS 2 ratio in the prepared film was modulated by adding the different content of sulfur into MoS 2 target. Besides, this addition also has an effect on the pore structure of films. Finally, the obtained high-content 1T phase MoS 2 film provides the highly metallic conductivity and more active sites, which results in the more enhanced HER catalytic activity with a lower Tafel slope of 38 mV dec −1 , a smaller overpotential of 151 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , compared with the pure MoS 2 film.

Graphical Better anode by design : A designed anode structure combining the metallic conductivity of 1T-MoS 2 with interconnected TiO 2 /MoO 3 grains is beneficial for fast charge-transfer reactions and reduced transmission losses. Moreover, a flexible carbon framework buffers swollen lithium compounds, such as Li x MoO 3 and Li x MoS 2 , and supports the shrinking delithiated products, with potential for achieving high capacity stability in both Li- and Na-ion batteries. Integrating layered nanostructured MoS 2 with a structurally stable TiO 2 backbone to construct reciprocal MoS 2 /TiO 2 -based nanocomposites is an effective strategy. C@TiO 2 /MoO 3 composite nanofibers doped with 1T-phase MoS 2 nanograins were fabricated by partially sulfurizing MoO x /TiO 2 precursors. By controlling a suitable preoxidation temperature before severe thermolysis of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), the MoO x /TiO 2 precursors formed a polymer-embedded array through coordination of the Mo source and pyrrolidyl groups of PVP. Sulfidation under water/solvent hydrothermal conditions led to partial formation of metallic 1T-phase MoS 2 from the MoO x precursor with preoxidation at 200 °C. After carbonization, the TiO 2 /MoO 3 /MoS 2 nanograins were encapsulated in a carbon backbone in a vertical pattern, providing both chemical contact for confined electron transport and sufficient space to adapt to volume changes. The obtained carbon-based platform not only has the advantages of an integral structure, but also exhibited ultrastable specific capacities of 540 and 251 mAh g −1 for Li-ion batteries and Na-ion batteries, respectively, after 100 cycles.

MoS 2 is considered a highly promising anode material for supercapacitors owing to its distinctive two-dimensional structure. However, its relatively low electrical conductivity restricts its further development and practical application. For the purpose of addressing this issue, this study reports the first synthesis of a CuO@MoS 2 /MXene ternary heterostructure based on hollow CuO. The formation of the built-in electric field, along with the redistribution of local charge, facilitates the transformation of 2H-MoS 2 into highly conductive 1T-MoS 2 . In addition, the three-dimensional crosslinked network structure formed by the highly conductive MXene and MoS 2 layers offers additional storage capacity for electrolyte ions, thereby further enhancing the energy storage density of the material. This negative material exhibits a maximum specific capacitance of 1435.2 F g −1 , which is significantly higher than that of most reported MoS 2 -based negative materials. The synergistic support provided by the porous CuO substrate and the MXene layer effectively inhibits the lamellar aggregation of MoS 2 , thereby achieving a capacitor retention rate of 90.1 % after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The asymmetric supercapacitor constructed from the material achieves a maximum energy density of 91.4 Wh·kg −1 , demonstrating excellent application potential in various fields. This study addresses the research gap concerning negative electrode materials for high specific capacitance MoS 2 -based supercapacitors and offers a novel approach to further enhancing the energy density of supercapacitors.

The metallic phase MoS 2 (1T-MoS 2 ) supported metal-nanocatalyst is an appealing material system for accelerating the redox kinetics of non-aqueous Li | |O 2 batteries. However, the drawbacks associated with the surface orbital steric effect and the internal electron coupling results in a detrimental effect for the stability of 1T-MoS 2 , especially for the interface charge transfer. This makes it difficult to incorporate guest metal nanoparticles without compromising the 1 T phase support. To circumvent these issues, here we propose a p-block element (In-O) doping strategy to stabilize the 1 T phase MoS 2 by moderating the surface orbital steric effect and strengthening the internal chemical bonding, and thus for the epitaxial Ru nanocatalyst graft on the stabilized 1T-MoS 2 for Li | |O 2 batteries. The experimental and theoretical analyzes indicate that the In-O-MoS 2 @Ru enhances the O 2 dissociation and facilitates the adsorption of LiO 2 intermediates. This effect promotes the growth of weakly crystalline Li 2 O 2 films during oxygen reduction reaction, which can be more easily decomposed during the oxygen evolution reaction, thereby enhancing the bifunctional-catalytic kinetics. When employed at the positive electrode for non-aqueous Li | |O 2 batteries, In-O-MoS 2 @Ru shows an overpotential of 0.37 V and a cycling life of 284 cycles at 200 mA g −1 with a final discharge specific capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 at 25 °C.
