High-Efficiency Silicon Solar Cells with Chemical and Field-Effect Passivation Using Novel 2PACz/MoOx Hole-Selective Contacts

Qianfeng Gao,Jianghao Liu,Zhiyuan Xu,Yu Yan,Wei Li,Taiqiang Wang,Hongyu Dun,Jiakai Zhou,Ke Tao,Baojie Yan,Bo Yu,JinChao Shi,Qian Huang,Xiaodan Zhang,Ying Zhao,Guofu Hou

Dopant-free crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells face critical challenges in hole transport layer (HTL) design, where conventional molybdenum oxide (MoO x ) contacts suffer from interface oxidation and insufficient electron blocking. While self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) demonstrate potential in organic photovoltaics, their application in silicon-based HTLs remains unexplored. In this study, a novel organic SAM (2PACz) is proposed, where phosphonic acid (PA) groups form strong coordination bonds with MoO x as HTL, aiming to improve cell performance via both chemical and field-effect passivation. The incorporation of 2PACz raises the work function of MoO x by 0.66 eV and significantly improves the minority carrier lifetime, which, in turn increases the built-in potential ( V bi ) to 1.06 V. These improvements contribute to a boost in both open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) and short-circuit current ( J sc ). Finally, the solar cell with 2PACz/MoO x -Au NPs-MoO x (MAM) stack achieves a V oc of 753.3 mV, a J sc of 40.10 mA cm − 2 , a fill factor ( FF ) of 79.12%, and a conversion efficiency ( E ff ) of 23.90%. The application of 2PACz in the HTL significantly enhances solar cell performance, offering a novel strategy for interface optimization in c-Si solar cells and other optoelectronic devices.

Dual Surface Modifications of NiOx/Perovskite Interface for Enhancement of Device Stability

Jingyang Lin,Yantao Wang,Abdul Khaleed,Ali Asgher Syed,Yanling He,Christopher C. S. Chan,Yin Li,Kuan Liu,Gang Li,Kam Sing Wong,Jasminka Popović,Jing Fan,Alan Man Ching Ng,Aleksandra B. Djurišić

Various phosphonic acid based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been commonly used for interface modifications in inverted perovskite solar cells. This typically results in significant enhancement of the hole extraction and consequent increase in the power conversion efficiency. However, the surface coverage and packing density of SAM molecules can vary, depending on the chosen SAM material and underlying oxide layer. In addition, different SAM molecules have diverse effects on the interfacial energy level alignment and perovskite film growth, resulting in complex relationships between surface modification, efficiency, and lifetime. Here we show that ethanolamine surface modification combined with [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz) results in significant improvement in device stability compared to devices with 2PACz modification only. The significantly smaller size of ethanolamine enables it to fill any gaps in 2PACz coverage and provide improved interfacial defect passivation, while its different chemical structure enables it to provide complementary effects to 2PACz passivation. Consequently, the perovskite films are more stable under illumination (slower photoinduced segregation), and the devices exhibit significant stability enhancement. Despite similar power conversion efficiencies (PCE) between 2PACz only and combined ethanolamine-2PACz modification (PCE of champion devices ∼21.6–22.0% for rigid and ∼20.2–21.0% for flexible devices), the T80 lifetime under simulated solar illumination in ambient is improved more than 15 times for both rigid and flexible devices.

Ultrathin Self-Assembled Monolayer for Effective Silicon Solar Cell Passivation

Wenheng Li,Ziqi Zhao,Jianxin Guo,Bingbing Chen,Xiao Wang,Yuhua Bai,Jingwei Chen,Dehua Yang,Qing Gao,Xueliang Yang,Jianming Wang,Dengyuan Song,Shufang Wang,Xuning Zhang,Jianhui Chen

Passivation technology is crucial for reducing interface defects and impacting the performance of crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. Concurrently, maintaining a thin passivation layer is essential for ensuring efficient carrier transport. With an ultrathin passivated contact structure, both Silicon Heterojunction (SHJ) cells and Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon) solar cells achieve an efficiency surpassing 26%. To reduce production costs and simplify solar cell manufacturing processes, the rapid development of organic material passivation technology has emerged. However, its widespread industrial production is hindered by environmental safety concerns, such as strong acid corrosion and biological and ecological safety issues. Here, we discovered a low-cost self-assembled monolayer (SAM) hole-selective transport material known as 2PACz ([2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl) ethyl] phosphonic acid) with phosphate groups to form c-Si solar cells for the first time. The ultrathin film of 2PACz with phosphate groups can establish strong and stable P–O–Si bonds on the silicon surface. Meanwhile, like 2PACz, a uniform ultrathin film with a carbazole function group can offer electron-localizing and thus hole-selective properties, which provides ideas for studying dopant-free silicon solar cells. As a result of such interfacial passivation engineering, it plays an important role in repairing porous structures, such as pyramid-textured silicon surfaces, and cutting losses during the commercialization of c-Si solar cells. Crucially, this advancement offers insights for the development of new high-efficiency ultrathin film passivation methods in the postsilicon era.

Self-assembled mono-hole-injecting layers towards efficient deep-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes

Xin Zheng,Changting Wei,Shichen Yuan,Daqing Zhang,Xiansheng Li,Xin Luo,Weiling Lu,Bo Xu,Jing Huang

Hole-injection layers (HILs) play crucial roles in enhancing the performance of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) by lowering the energy barrier between the anode and the hole-transport layer (HTL). However, the commonly employed HIL, poly( 3 , 4 -ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT: PSS) has notable drawbacks, such as extreme acidity and susceptibility to corrosion, which severely hampers device efficiency and stability. Herein, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-[ 2 -( 9H -Carbazol- 9 -yl) ethyl] phosphonic acid (2PACz) instead of PEDOT: PSS was employed in PeLEDs, which could reduce the negative impacts on neighboring perovskite sites and indium tin oxide electrodes. To obtain favorable energy level alignment between 2PACz and the perovskite layer, poly( 9 -vinylcarbazole) (PVK) was introduced as an indispensable HTL. Consequently, the 2PACz/PVK-based deep-blue PeLEDs exhibit a lower turn-on voltage of 3.20 V, and a peak external quantum efficiency of 4.42 % at 467 nm, which is a threefold improvement over the control devices. This impressive performance boost can be attributed to the reduction in interfacial defects and the improved balance of carrier injection, leading to more efficient light emission. Our study not only introduces an innovative and cost-effective HIL solution for PeLEDs but also provides valuable insights and guidance for the development of highly efficient and stable PeLEDs in the future.

Self-Assembled Carbazole-Phosphonate Hole-Injection Layer with a Dual-Modification Mechanism Enables High Efficient and Stable Blue Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diode

Yuyu Liu,Minming Yan,Kai Zhang,Ye Chen,Yaowu He,Hong Meng,Yong Huang,Yong Zhang

As a widely used hole-injecting material in quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) remains limited by its acidity and hygroscopicity, which cause ITO corrosion and degrade the long-term stability of the devices. Herein, a carbazole-phosphonic acid, [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz), is introduced as a substitute for PEDOT:PSS. As a result, the blue CdSe/ZnSe/ZnS QLEDs achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE), current efficiency, and luminance of 16.58%, 11.15 cd·A–1, and 31,764 cd·m–2, respectively. Notably, the T50 lifetime of the devices is extended from 55 h in PEDOT:PSS-based QLEDs to 148 h in 2PACz-based counterparts at a constant current density of 20 mA·cm–2. In our analysis, this enhancement is attributed to the dual-modification mechanism of 2PACz. On one hand, interaction between ITO and 2PACz modifies the work function, improves the film surface roughness, and ultimately reduces the interfacial traps of ITO. On the other hand, interaction between 2PACz and poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(4,4′-(N-(4-s-butylphenyl)diphenylamine)] (TFB) facilitates hole injection by optimizing the transport pathway through the π–π stacking, which effectively balances charge recombination.

Self-Assembled Monolayer Enables Hole Injection Layer-Free Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with Over 31% External Quantum Efficiency

Yanfu Wan,Chunyan Yang,Xingquan Zhu,Xinyu Zhang,Junfeng Tong,Jianfeng Li,Zhilong Qian,Xiang Ma,Heng Zhang

PEDOT:PSS is widely employed as a hole injection layer (HIL) in quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). However, its hygroscopicity and acidity can lead to electrode corrosion and compromise device stability. Here, high-performance HIL-free QLEDs are demonstrated, enabled by carbazole-based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) functioning as an interfacial modification layer (IML) on ITO. The SAMs boost ITO work function for direct hole injection and use shallow low unoccupied molecular orbital level (LUMO) to curb leakage. Consequently, the QLED incorporating 2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl phosphonic acid (2PACz) IML achieves high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 31.33%, an excellent brightness of 430 900 cd m − 2 and a long T 95 operational lifetime of 5971 h at 1000 cd m −2 , all of which significantly outperforming the PEDOT:PSS device. To the best of the knowledge, these performances are the highest ever reported for HIL-free QLEDs. Furthermore, the 2PACz-based QLEDs can also sustain high EQE (≈20%) at extremely low current densities of 0.015 mA cm −2 (3.6 cd m − 2 ), which is very beneficial for displays to achieve high efficiency at low brightness. This work paves the way for stabler, high-performance QLEDs and faster commercialization.
