3D printable phase change based thermal interface material with lower total thermal resistance at operating temperature

Lei Hou,Jin-Chao Ji,Gong-Peng Cui,Kai-Yin Sun,Hong-Bo Lan,Mei Chen,Chang-Ping Feng,Fang Wei

Thermal interface materials (TIMs) play a crucial role in addressing the heat dissipation challenges of electronic components, which needing high thermal conductivity and low thermal resistance to effectively improve heat transfer between chip and heat sink. This work focuses on the design of a 3D printable phase change based TIMs, which can be integrated with 3D printing technology to provide shapes suitable for quickly filling the gap between the chip and the heat sink in actual automated production. The optimized sample exhibits a total thermal resistance of 0.0012 m 2 K/W at operating temperature, with a through-plane thermal conductivity of 0.48 W/mK and an in-plane thermal conductivity of 1.24 W/mK. In practical thermal management, the resulting samples demonstrated a temperature reduction of 22 °C comparison with commercial TIM, highlighting its superior heat dissipation capability.

Zwitterionic Skins with a Wide Scope of Customizable Functionalities

Zhouyue Lei,Peiyi Wu

With growing interest in the fields of wearable devices, it is crucial yet rather challenging to develop skinlike soft conductive materials with customizable functionalities and human tissue-compatible mechanical properties. Previously reported electronic skins struggle to meet the demands for transparence, mechanical adaptability, and stable conductivity during deformation. The recent rise of ionic skins with inorganic salts or ionic liquids doping provides the intrinsic stretchability, however, dilemmas remain for their limited functionalities such as a monotonous appearance and a narrow scope of mechanical and sensory properties. Herein, we design a type of zwitterionic hydrogels from the perspective of molecular interactions, which successfully combines ultrastretchability (>10000% strain), high strength (∼300 kPa), self-healability (at room temperature within 12 h), 3D printability, distinct stimuli-responsibility, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity. The wide spectrum of such excellent properties has been rarely reported before and along with the ability to fabricate bioinspired intelligent skins recreating multiple sensations and mechanical properties of human skin, covering a broad range of sensitivity, and displaying tunable visual effect. We believe this work will inspire the programming of stimuli-responsive skinlike materials and contribute to the smart devices for information transformation between natural and artificial interfaces.

Novel Bio-Based Polyurethane Elastomers Customizable for Orthopedic Devices: Toughness, Rapid Degradability, and Safety

Chenxin Xu,Yushu Tian,Hengheng Zhao,Jiadong Wang,Qingjun Wang,Xiang Lin,Jun Liu,Zhao Wang,Xuan Qin,Liqun Zhang

Given the increasing global demand for sustainable materials and growing concerns over the depletion of petrochemical resources, we report the synthesis of an amorphous bio-derived polyester diol, and this diol was polymerized with various isocyanates and butanediol, yielding a novel series of bio-based polyurethane elastomers (BPUEs). Notably, the prepared HDI-17% exhibited remarkable mechanical properties comparable to petroleum-based elastomers while demonstrating exceptional biodegradability. Specifically, the elastomer indicated an enzymatic degradation ratio of 82.0% within 20 days and a relative compost degradation ratio of up to 95.5% compared with lignin over 90 days. These results significantly surpass the degradation rates of other degradable PUs reported in the literature. Regarding the degradation mechanism, our findings indicated that enzymatic degradation primarily targeted the ester groups of soft segments, with the process occurring layer-by-layer from exterior to interior. Additionally, microphase separation significantly influenced the degradation rate. Notably, both the BPUEs and their degradation byproduct solution were found to be nonbiotoxicity, highlighting their potential for safe application within biological systems. Furthermore, the BPUEs exhibited remarkable 3D printability, allowing for the precise fabrication of complex devices. These results mark a significant step forward in sustainable materials, providing viable options for the applications of customizing degradable biomedical devices.

Bioinspired 3D Printable, Self-Healable, and Stretchable Hydrogels with Multiple Conductivities for Skin-like Wearable Strain Sensors

Jingjiang Wei,Jingjing Xie,Pengchao Zhang,Zhaoyong Zou,Hang Ping,Weimin Wang,Hao Xie,James Zhijian Shen,Liwen Lei,Zhengyi Fu

Bioinspired hydrogels have promising prospects in applications such as wearable devices, human health monitoring equipment, and soft robots due to their multifunctional sensing properties resembling natural skin. However, the preparation of intelligent hydrogels that provide feedback on multiple electronic signals simultaneously, such as human skin receptors, when stimulated by external contact pressure remains a substantial challenge. In this study, we designed a bioinspired hydrogel with multiple conductive capabilities by incorporating carbon nanotubes into a chelate of calcium ions with polyacrylic acid and sodium alginate. The bioinspired hydrogel consolidates self-healing ability, stretchability, 3D printability, and multiple conductivities. It can be fabricated as an integrated strain sensor with simultaneous piezoresistive and piezocapacitive performances, exhibiting sensitive (gauge factor of 6.29 in resistance mode and 1.25 kPa–1 in capacitance mode) responses to subtle pressure changes in the human body, such as finger flexion, knee flexion, and respiration. Furthermore, the bioinspired strain sensor sensitively and discriminatively recognizes the signatures written on it. Hence, we expect our ideas to provide inspiration for studies exploring the use of advanced hydrogels in multifunctional skin-like smart wearable devices.

Wet Spinning/UV Dual-Curing enabled 3D printable fiber for intelligent electronic devices

Tingxuan Duan,Bo Liu,Yiyan Gao,Guanghui Gao

Conductive fibers are widely used in wearable sensors and implantable devices in real life due to their excellent properties of softness and lightweight. However, most conductive fibers obtained through the simple blending of polymer elastomers and inorganic conductive particles often leads to issues such as uneven conductor distribution and poor mechanical performance. Herein, the composite fiber consists of deep eutectic solvents (composed of choline chloride and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and thermoplastic polyurethane was prepared by wet spinning/ ultraviolet dual-curing method. The uniform distribution of deep eutectic solvents and the resilience of thermoplastic polyurethane ensure that the fiber material can maintain stable signal monitoring capability when subject to various strains over the long term. The composite fiber as motion sensor with an ultra-wide operating range (0–710 %), fast response time (186 ms), long lifetime (stable after 5 months), wide temperature range and excellent weather resistance. It is worth mention that the dual curing process combined with 3D printing technology, allows for the fabrication of flexible sensors in a variety of shapes. 3D printing sensors can be produced underwater to achieve different sensitivities, enabling customization to meet the requirements of applications. This innovative study holds tremendous potential for the next generation of flexible electronic products, such as human motion monitoring and information transmission.

Mechanically robust, shape memory, self-healing and 3D printable thermoreversible cross-linked polymer composites toward conductive and biomimetic skin devices applications

Hongjie Bi,Gaoyuan Ye,Hao Sun,Zechun Ren,Tongfei Gu,Min Xu

The current work demonstrates excellent thermal, mechanical, shape memory, and self-healing properties of 3D printable, thermoreversible, cross-linked network composites. The thermoreversible cross-linked networks are composed of Diels-Alder (DA) reversible covalent and transient cross-links, which are formed by thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). Also, cellulose nanocrystalline (CNC) is utilized as a cross-linking agent. The incorporated CNC, modified with furan (CNC-FA) and maleic anhydride groups (CNC-MAH), exhibits excellent compatibility with TPU/PCL matrix, forming physical and chemical cross-linking structures in the composites. Also, the mechanical properties , thermal stability, and self-healing properties are significantly improved after the addition of modified CNC. In addition, the mechanism of performance enhancement is further analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. One should note that the mechanically robust and 3D printable self-healing composites enable the fabrication of durable conductive devices and biomimetic skin devices with high mechanical integrity, excellent electrical healing and superior strain-induced fluorescence properties, showing promise in next-generation flexible electronics, encryption devices and electronic skins, and may broaden the variety and applications of 3D-printable materials.
