Fast and low-cost patterning of electrodes on versatile 2D and 3D substrates by cutting and origami cohesive thermoplastic for biosensing applications

Zhuanzhuan Shi,Xiaoshuai Wu,Yao Lu,Zhisong Lu,Chang Ming Li,Ling Yu

In this work, cohesive thermoplastic-assisted patterning was successfully used to fabricate versatile 2D and 3D electrodes for biosensing application. The cohesive thermoplastic template was fabricated by cutter shaping to remove wet-chemical processes and UV-lithography. This low cost approach is compatible with versatile inks and substrates. Both single and multi-step grafting of inks work well with cohesive thermoplastic templates to form electronic units on substrates. Other than work on a 2D flat substrate, the cohesive thermoplastic origami can easily fabricate electrodes on 3D objects, demonstrating itself as a good candidate to implant electronic unit on a stereotype object. The flexibility, convenience and operability seen here make this method a fast prototype method to evaluate the proof-of-concept design. It also provides alternative fabrication solutions for researchers from resource-limited laboratories to work on miniaturized devices.

Flexible 3D Substrate of Ag Nanoparticle-Loaded Carbon Aerogels with Outstanding Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Performance

Chunxue Zheng,Jie Yu,Liguang Dou,Zhen Wang,Zhulin Huang,Xinyang Li,Xiaoye Hu,Yue Li

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), an ultra-sensitive and non-destructive analytic technique, has attracted wide attention from the scientific community. Despite its rapid development, limited hotspots on the SERS substrates have restricted their potential in practical applications. Herein, we developed a facile method to fabricate a flexible three-dimensional (3D) SERS substrate composed of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs)-loaded carbon aerogels (CAs). Such a flexible Ag NPs/CAs substrate exhibited numerous hotspots, which can facilely be adjusted not only by tuning the density of Ag NPs but also by controlling the bending degree of the flexible substrate. In addition, the influence of hotspots on the local electric field enhancement was investigated by theoretical calculations. Moreover, the 3D network structure of the CAs with a large specific surface area and strong adsorption ability can improve the capture of target molecules. Consequently, the optimal Ag NPs/CAs substrate has a low detection limit of 10–12 M for rhodamine 6G molecules as well as good repeatability. Furthermore, based on the good performance of SERS detection of the Ag NPs/CAs substrate, it can also be practically used for the detection of thiram molecules on the surface of cherry tomatoes. Such a flexible 3D Ag NPs/CAs substrate has great potential for practical environmental monitoring applications.

Construction of nanoparticle-based 3D protein microarrays with high protein capacity and controllable density

Guo Li,Yu Wang,Tao Chen,Haili Zhao

Three-dimensional (3D) substrates have received considerable attention for the fabrication of protein microarrays with high protein capacity owing to their enlarged surface area for the high density immobilization of proteins. In this work, a facile strategy for constructing the protein microarrays with a low background and high signal intensity was developed based on the polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) assembled substrate. The discontinuous hydrophilic surface with hydrophobic initiators and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) brushes was fabricated in the first step via digital micromirror device (DMD)-mediated photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (Photo-ATRP) process, and the hydrophilic interaction between sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-modified PS-NPs and PEGMA brushes enabled the selective assembly of PS-NPs on the PEGMA brush region, resulting in the successful formation of arrayed surface with PS-NPs patterns. Then, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) brushes were grafted surrounding the PS-NPs to eliminate background noise caused by non-specific protein absorption. Compared to the PGMA brushes patterned substrate, the PS-NPs substrate exhibited excellent protein adsorption capability, leading to the 3D protein microarrays with higher protein capacity were easily obtained. Especially, the assembly density could be controlled by adjusting the PS suspension concentration, resulting in the effective regulation on the density of surface-bound proteins. Finally, the spatial control of protein density on the same substrate was achieved through regulating the distribution density of assembled PS-NPs, allowing for a protein microarrays with controllable density. This simple and effective mothed for fabricating nanoparticle-based 3D protein microarrays has tremendous potential in the fields of biomedical detection and high-throughput analysis.

Cauliflower-Inspired 3D SERS Substrate for Multiple Mycotoxins Detection

Jinjie Li,Heng Yan,Xuecai Tan,Zhicheng Lu,Heyou Han

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising analytical tool, but simultaneous detection of multiple targets using SERS remains a challenge. Herein, a cauliflower-inspired 3D SERS substrate with intense hot spots was prepared through sputtering Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the surface of polydimethylsiloxane coated anodic aluminum oxide (PDMS@AAO) complex substrate. As a result, the cauliflower-inspired 3D SERS substrate achieved the highest SERS activities at a sputtering time of 8 min. Under the optimal conditions, this SERS substrate possessed a low detection limit of 10–12 M, excellent enhancement uniformity (relative standard deviation, RSD = 4.57%) and high enhancement factor (2.2 × 106) for 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA). Furthermore, the results of Raman showed that the 3D-Nanocauliflower SERS substrates could realize the simultaneous label-free detection for three mycotoxins (aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone) in maize for the first time. It behaved good linear relationship between the concentrations and Raman intensities of aflatoxin B1, zearalenone, and deoxynivalenol. For the three mycotoxins, this method exhibited the limit of detection (LOD) of 1.8, 47.7, and 24.8 ng/mL (S/N = 3), respectively. The 3D-Nanocauliflower SERS substrates with dense hot spots presented remarkable SERS effect and activity, which could be act as a potential candidate for SERS substrate applied in the rapid and label-free detection.

Ti3C2Tx MXene-Loaded 3D Substrate toward On-Chip Multi-Gas Sensing with Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) Barcode Readout

Kuo Yang,Kai Zhu,Yuanzhe Wang,Ziting Qian,Yizhi Zhang,Zhaoyan Yang,Zhuyuan Wang,Lei Wu,Shenfei Zong,Yiping Cui

Gas sensors lie at the heart of various fields ranging from medical to environmental sciences, and the demand of gas sensors is instantly expanding. However, in the face of complex gas samples, how to maintain high sensitivity while performing multiplex detection still puzzles the researchers. Here, by introducing Ti3C2Tx MXene into a microfluidic gas sensor with a three-dimensional (3D) transferable SERS substrate, a powerful gas sensor having both multiplex detecting ability and high sensitivity is demonstrated. The employ of MXene endows the sensor with a universal high adsorption efficiency for various gases while the generation of in situ gas vortices in the sophisticated nanomicro structure extends the molecule residence time in SERS-active area, both leading to the increased sensitivity. In the proof-of-concept experiment, a limit of detection (LOD) of 10–50 ppb was achieved for three typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) according to the intrinsic SERS signals of gas molecules. Besides, the well-designed periodic 3D structure solves the general repeatability problem of SERS substrates. In addition, the detailed composition of gas mixture was revealed using classic least-square analysis (CLS) with an average accuracy of 90.6%. Further, a chromatic barcode was developed based on the results of CLS to read out the complex composition of samples visually.
