Photocatalysis is widely acknowledged as an efficient and environmentally friendly method for treating dye-contaminated wastewater. However, the utilization of powdered photocatalysts presents significant challenges, including issues related to recyclability and the potential for secondary pollution. Herein, a novel technique based on 3D printing for the synthesizing of iron oxide (Fe2O3) involving chlorella was presented. Initially, chlorella powders were immobilized within acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) substrate plastics using melt extrusion technology. Subsequently, these composite materials were transformed into ABS/TPU/chlorella skeletons (ATCh40), through fused deposition molding (FDM) technology. The integration of Fe2O3 onto the ATCh40 (ATCh40-Fe2O3) skeletons was accomplished by subjecting them to controlled heating in an oil bath. A comprehensive characterization of the synthesized materials confirms the successful growth of Fe2O3 on the surface of 3D skeletons. This strategy effectively addresses the immobilization challenges associated with powdered photocatalysts. In photocatalytic degradation experiments targeting methyl orange (MO), the ATCh40-Fe2O3 skeletons exhibited a remarkable MO removal rate of 91% within 240 min. Under conditions where the pH of MO solution was maintained at 3, and the ATCh40-Fe2O3 skeletons were subjected to a heat treatment in a 150 °C blast drying oven for 2 hours, the degradation rate of MO remained substantial, achieving 90% removal after 6 cycles. In contrast, when the same synthetic procedure was applied to ABS/TPU (AT) skeletons, the resulting product was identified as α-FeOOH. The MO removal rate by the AT-α-FeOOH skeletons was considerably lower, reaching only 49% after 240 min. This research provided a practical approach for the construction of photocatalytic devices through the use of 3D printing technology.

Herein, the 3D printing technology is harnessed as a new and flexible strategy to fabricate a structural-parameter adjustable 3D-structured Ti-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode. The Ti alloy was discovered to be practicable during the synthesis of Ti-Fe 2 O 3 and enlisted as a substrate material for crafting a conical-array patterned Ti-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode. The conical array fashions an angle between the incident light (longitudinal side) and the photogenerated charge transport (transverse side), along with a considerably augmented light-receiving area. Significantly, the charge separation efficiency progressively escalates as the cone height augments. This undertaking accentuates the importance of modulating the parameter of a 3D-structured Fe 2 O 3 photoanode.

Polytetrafluoroethylene/Aluminum (PTFE/Al) composite with high energy density and combustion reaction performance has received widespread attention in the field of propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnics. In order to precisely control combustion reaction and energy output performance, gradient structured PTFE/Al composite (mass and diameter gradient) has been designed and constructed through 3D printing technology . PTFE/Al ink is prepared by acoustic resonance mixing to control rheological properties (viscosity and modulus) for 3D printing technology. The largest reaction heat (7749.95 J/g) and burning rate (~130 mm/s) are achieved for gradient lines with diameter of 2.42 mm and mass ratio of 60:40 (PTFE/Al). Moreover, the progressive change from steady combustion to deflagration containing three stages of pressure output is observed for gradient structured PTFE/Al cylinder. This work reveals that gradient structure could provide new strategy to tune energy output and combustion performances, which can promote the practical application of PTFE/Al reactive materials.

The low bioavailability of orally administered drugs as a result of the instability in the gastrointestinal tract environment creates significant challenges to developing site-targeted drug delivery systems. This study proposes a novel hydrogel drug carrier using pH-responsive materials assisted with semi-solid extrusion 3D printing technology, enabling site-targeted drug release and customisation of temporal release profiles. The effects of material parameters on the pH-responsive behaviours of printed tablets were analysed thoroughly by investigating the swelling properties under both artificial gastric and intestinal fluids. It has been shown that high swelling rates at either acidic or alkaline conditions can be achieved by adjusting the mass ratio between sodium alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan, enabling site-targeted release. The drug release experiments reveal that gastric drug release can be achieved with a mass ratio of 1:3, whilst a ratio of 3:1 allows for intestinal release. Furthermore, controlled release is realised by tuning the infill density of the printing process. The method proposed in this study can not only significantly improve the bioavailability of oral drugs, but also offer the potential that each component of a compound drug tablet can be released in a controlled manner at a target location.

In view of the high incidence and long-term treatment of dental caries, personalized dental fillers with long therapeutic action have broad application prospects in the dental clinic. The objective of this study was to fabricate and evaluate novel dental fillers using state-of-the-art 3D printing technology. Tinidazole (TNZ), a commonly used antibacterial drug in the dental clinic, was chosen as the model compound. Models of molars with carious cavities were obtained via 3D scanning. TNZ dental fillers were indirectly produced by thermal pressing using customized 3D printed molds. In addition, bio-relevant in vitro dissolution and mechanical testing methods were developed using customized 3D printed release and compression molds, respectively. It was observed that the formability, mechanical properties, and release behavior of the TNZ dental fillers were affected by mold materials, plasticizers, and release modifiers. The developed dental fillers were capable of sustained releasing TNZ over one week. The TNZ release characteristics can be tailored based on clinical requirements by varying hydroxypropyl methylcellulose E5 (HPMC-E5) concentrations and filler dimensions. Moreover, computational simulation based on the finite element method showed that the biomechanical behavior of the TNZ dental fillers met the daily use requirement. The present study demonstrated that the state-of-the-art 3D printing technology can be used to design and fabricate personalized dental fillers with high mechanical strength and “on-demand” drug release characteristics.

As a typical energetic composite, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/aluminum (Al) has been widely applied in explosives, pyrotechnics, and propellants due to its ultra-high energy density and intense exothermic reaction. In this work, the radial gradient (RG) structure of PTFE/Al cylinders with three different PTFE morphologies (200 nm and 5 μ m particles and 5 μ m fiber) and content changes are prepared by 3D printing technology. The effect of radial gradient structure on the pressure output of PTFE/Al has been studied. Compared with the morphology change of PTFE, the change of component content in the gradient structure has an obvious effect on the pressure output of the PTFE/Al cylinder. Furthermore, the relationships of the morphology, content of PTFE and the combustion reaction of the PTFE/Al cylinder reveal that the cylinder shows a more complex flame propagation process than others. These results could provide a strategy to improve the combustion and pressure output of PTFE/Al.

Oxidizing Hypochlorous acid (HOCl),which widely exists in environment, is closely related to the health of organisms. Herein, the low-cost up-conversion (UCNPs)-Carmine system, without noble metal nanoparticle, was designed to detect HOCl based on inner filter effect (IFE) using UCNPs as energy donors and dye molecules carmine as energy receptors. Specifically, the green UCL (up-conversion luminescence) of UCNPs can be effectively quenched by the HOCl-sensitive carmine and red UCL retained unchanged, owing to the spectral overlap between the absorption of Carmine and emission of UCNPs in the green region. Once exposed to HOCl, the Carmine dye molecule is degraded, and thus the green UCL of UCNPs restores, the variation of which can accurately reflect the content of HOCl. This nanosensor has a low detection limit of only 0.30 μM, which is much lower than that of colorimetric detection, and is successfully applied to detect HOCl spiked in spring water with good recoveries. Notably, by means of 3D printing technology, we have created a portable hydrogel sensing platform that can quickly and efficiently detect HOCl in samples. The detection limit of G/R of this sensing platform is only 12.87 μM, and satisfactory recovery values in real sample detection. This innovation not only improves the sensitivity of the sensor, but also provides a more convenient solution for environmental monitoring and safety testing, demonstrating the potential of hydrogels for a wide range of applications in sensing.

Increased multiantibiotic-resistant bacteria means that infected bone defects remain a significant challenge to clinics. Great interest has emerged in the use of non-antibiotic antimicrobials to reduce the rate of multiantibiotic-resistant bacterial infection and facilitate bone regeneration. The cationic antimicrobial peptide LL-37 is the sole human cathelicidin and has shown nonspecific activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. In this study, we fabricated the poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/β-calcium phosphate/peptide LL-37 (PLGA/TCP/LL-37, PTL) scaffold with low-temperature 3D-printing technology for the treatment of infected segmental bone defects. The prepared scaffolds were divided into three groups: a high LL-37 concentration group (PTHL), low LL-37 concentration group (PTLL) and blank control group (PT). The cytocompatibility and antimicrobial activity of the engineered scaffolds were tested in vitro, and their osteogenesis properties were assessed in vivo in a rat infected bone defect model. We found the fabricated PTL scaffold had a well-designed porous structure that could support a steady and prolonged LL-37 release. Furthermore, the PTHL group showed strong antibacterial activity againstStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) andEscherichia coli(E. coli) without any inhibition of the proliferation or alkaline phosphatase activity of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in vitro. In addition, the infected femoral defects implanted with PTHL group displayed new bone formation in four weeks without any evidence of residual bacteria, which showed similar antibacterial outcomes to the vancomycin and cancellous bone mixture group. In conclusion, the PTHL composite scaffold is a promising non-antibiotic antimicrobial graft with good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and osteogenic capability for infected bone defects. Keywords:peptide LL-37;non-antibiotic antimicrobial graft;PLGA/TCP/LL-37 scaffolds;low-temperature 3D-printing technology;rat infected femoral defect model

In order to repair critical-sized bone defects, various polylactic acid-glycolic acid (PLGA)-based hybrid scaffolds are successfully developed as bone substitutes. However, the byproducts of these PLGA-based scaffolds are known to acidify the implanted site, inducing tiresome acidic inflammation. Moreover, these degradation productions cannot offer an osteo-friendly microenvironment at the implanted site, matching natural bone healing. Herein, inspired by bone microenvironment atlas of natural bone-healing process, an osteo-microenvironment stage-regulative scaffold (P80/D10/M10) is fabricated by incorporating self-developed decellularized bone matrix microparticles (DBM-MPs) and multifunctional magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles (MH-NPs) into PLGA with an optimized proportion using low-temperature rapid prototyping (LT-RP) 3D-printing technology. The cell experiments show that this P80/D10/M10 exhibits excellent properties in mechanics, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, meanwhile superior stimulations in osteo-immunomodulation, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis. Additionally, the animal experiments determined that this P80/D10/M10 can offer an osteo-friendly microenvironment in a stage-matched pattern for enhanced bone regeneration, namely, optimization of early inflammation, middle neovascularization, and later bone formation. Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis suggested that the in vivo performance of P80/D10/M10 on bone defect repair is mostly attributed to regulating artery development, bone development, and bone remodeling. Overall, this study reveals that the osteo-microenvironment stage-regulative scaffold provides a promising treatment for bone defect repair.

Conductive fibers are widely used in wearable sensors and implantable devices in real life due to their excellent properties of softness and lightweight. However, most conductive fibers obtained through the simple blending of polymer elastomers and inorganic conductive particles often leads to issues such as uneven conductor distribution and poor mechanical performance. Herein, the composite fiber consists of deep eutectic solvents (composed of choline chloride and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and thermoplastic polyurethane was prepared by wet spinning/ ultraviolet dual-curing method. The uniform distribution of deep eutectic solvents and the resilience of thermoplastic polyurethane ensure that the fiber material can maintain stable signal monitoring capability when subject to various strains over the long term. The composite fiber as motion sensor with an ultra-wide operating range (0–710 %), fast response time (186 ms), long lifetime (stable after 5 months), wide temperature range and excellent weather resistance. It is worth mention that the dual curing process combined with 3D printing technology, allows for the fabrication of flexible sensors in a variety of shapes. 3D printing sensors can be produced underwater to achieve different sensitivities, enabling customization to meet the requirements of applications. This innovative study holds tremendous potential for the next generation of flexible electronic products, such as human motion monitoring and information transmission.

The clinical repair of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) presents high complexity, while neural conduits (NGCs) implantation serves as a potential strategy to promote peripheral nerve regeneration. However, integrating multiple factors such as three-dimensional microscopic porous structures, improved mechanical properties, surface topological features, and electrical stimulation (ES) to regulate the neural cell fate and reconstruct the regeneration microenvironment remains a significant challenge. Here, we successfully fabricated the PCL/MXene NGCs featuring microgroove structures and electrical conductivity using phase separation 3D printing technology. The NGCs demonstrate excellent mechanical properties (Young’s modulus: 12.78 ± 0.38 MPa) and electrical conductivity (5.68 ± 0.48 S/m), meeting the requirements for clinical application. Additionally, we incorporated electromagnetic induction technology to achieve synergistic modulation of directional guidance and non-invasive ES on rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells growth. In vitro cell culture experiments demonstrated that the PCL/MXene NGCs significantly guided the axonal orientation of PC12 with at 54.56 ± 4.84 % axons aligning within 0-30°. This magneto-induced, non-invasive ES further promoted cell proliferation and axonal growth, with the axonal length increased by approximately 31 % compared to the non-ES groups. This conductive grooved the PCL/MXene NGCs, constructed based on phase separation 3D printing and electromagnetic induction technology, holds promise for investigating nerve cell behaviors and offers innovative approaches for treating PNI.
