Suppression of Secondary Phases with Additive Engineering for the Spectrometer-Grade CsPbBr3 Single Crystals

Yongning Liu,Minghao Cui,Xiaoxi Feng,Wenzhen Wang,Xudong Tang,Sirui Bao,Kunpeng Mou,Benlan Zeng,Fangxiong Tang,Jianing Hu,Huaxing Gou,Jinkun Liu,Yan Zhu,Run Xu

CsPbBr3 single crystals have garnered significant attention as one of the most promising candidates for room-temperature semiconductor radiation detectors. However, the current solution-based growth of CsPbBr3 single crystals suffers from issues of the formation of secondary phases (CsPb2Br5) and strain-induced cracks in crystals due to high growth temperatures above the phase transition. In this study, 4-bromobutyric acid (BBA) as an additive was introduced in the precursor, which leads to an effective suppression of secondary phase formation and simultaneously a reduction of the crystal growth temperature. The CsPbBr3 single crystals grown with BBA exhibited improved crystal quality, with a full width at half-maximum of (200) X-ray rocking curve (XRC) as low as 0.025° and a high hole mobility-lifetime product (μτh) of 0.57 × 10–4 cm2/V. Moreover, the energy resolution for 57Co γ-ray spectra was improved to around 15.2%, indicating a great improvement in transport properties for CsPbBr3 single crystals grown with BBA. This study suggests that the effective suppression of the CsPb2Br5 secondary phase is likely one of the most important issues for a spectrometer-grade CsPbBr3 detector.

A Novel Pyrene-Based Fluorescent Probe for the Detection of Cu2+

Haixia Wang,Ning Xiao,Chen Zhou,Evgeny Kovtunets,Mingxin Luo,Chenyang Zou,Yining Wang,Jing Sun

A novel fluorescent probe (PYB) for selective and sensitive detection of Cu2+ions was rationally designed and synthesized via a multi-step organic reaction using pyrene as the fluorophore and salicylaldehyde-diethylenetriamine Schiff base as the recognition moiety. The structural characterization of PYB was confirmed by1H NMR,13C NMR, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Photophysical properties investigation revealed that the probe exhibited strong fluorescence emission at 362 nm in DMF/HEPES-NaOH buffer solution (v:v= 1:1, pH 7.4), which underwent a significant fluorescence quenching response (quenching efficiency up to 77%) upon the addition of Cu2+, attributed to the formation of a 1:1 PYB-Cu2+complex (binding constant K = 799.65 M−1). The probe showed excellent selectivity for Cu2+over other common metal ions (Ba2+, Na+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Hg2+, Fe3+, Co2+), with a low detection limit of 8.35 × 10−7M, which is well below the maximum allowable concentration of Cu2+in drinking water specified by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, a portable fluorescent test strip based on PYB was successfully fabricated, enabling rapid and visual detection of Cu2+under UV light. Fluorescence imaging experiments in living HepG2 cells demonstrated that PYB could penetrate cell membranes efficiently and realize the intracellular detection of exogenous Cu2+. These results collectively indicate that PYB holds great potential as a practical tool for Cu2+detection in environmental monitoring, food safety, and biological systems.

Yang Chenxuan,Wang Heda,Liu Minghang,Cai Yuang,Chi Jimei,Huang Liang,Su Meng,Wu Dongdong,Xu Bainan

Objective This study aimed to construct a perovskite quantum dot probe targeting isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutation. The probe is intended to enable rapid in vitro pathological diagnosis of IDH1-mutant glioma, guide surgeons in formulating scientific and rational resection strategies during surgery, and facilitate precise individualized intraoperative treatment for glioma patients. Methods Via surface ligand engineering, a perovskite nanocrystal (PNC) probe modified with bromobutyric acid (BBA) was developed in this study. This probe enhances water/oxygen stability and addresses the limitation that restricts the application of perovskite quantum dots as fluorescent probes. The probe was used to stain intraoperative tumor frozen sections to verify its specific recognition capability for IDH1-mutant glioma. Results Verification using 50 glioma frozen sections demonstrated that the probe could accomplish rapid pathological detection within 30 min (with a 5-minute incubation period). Fluorescence imaging showed specific green fluorescence in IDH1-mutant glioma. When compared with genetic testing results, the probe exhibited the following detection performance: sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 84%, positive predictive value of 86.2%, negative predictive value of 100%, and accuracy of 92% (κ = 0.84, P  < 0.001). Conclusions This BBA-stabilized perovskite probe enables rapid and specific in vitro detection of IDH1-mutant glioma. It provides real-time guidance for glioma surgery, is expected to assist surgeons in achieving precise resection of glioma, and thus advances the development of precision neuro-oncology.

Synergistic Surface Modification of Bromocarboxylic Acid-Oleylamine Dual Ligands for Highly Stable and Luminescent CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals

Wenjun Chen,Rui Zhang,Xiaobo Hu,Jingsheng Ma,Duna Su,Chuanli Wu,Yanqiao Xu,Xiuxun Han

The poor stability of CsPbBr 3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) caused by weak and dynamic ligand coordination severely limits their commercial applications. Herein, a dual-ligand synergistic modification strategy based on bromocarboxylic acids (BCAs) and oleylamine (OAm) was developed to mediate the surface structures and luminescent dynamics of CsPbBr 3 PNCs. The results reveal that carboxylate groups of BCA ligands modulate crystal growth, while its terminal Br atom forms a strong coordination with exposed Pb 2+ on the PNCs surface, which can effectively passivate lead- and bromine-related defects. The synergistic protection of OAm ligands enhances the stability of PNCs via amino-halide electrostatic interactions and steric hindrance effects. Notably, based on the relatively dense surface coating of 4-bromobutyric acid (BBA) and OAm dual-ligands, the prepared CsPbBr 3 PNCs exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 85.2 ± 2.4% and remarkable storage stability, retaining 90.2 ± 1.7% of their initial PL intensity after being stored for 63 days under ambient conditions. Furthermore, a prototype white light-emitting diode (WLED) fabricated with these PNCs displays a wide color gamut covering 122.1% of the NTSC standard and a luminous efficacy of 64.6 lm/W. This work provides a facile and feasible ligand engineering strategy to obtain highly stable and emissive PNCs.

Water-stable Bi-based perovskite for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in aqueous media

Chun Sun,Jiazhi Cui,Zhengtao Qiu,Jiabao Bai,Chao Fan,Dan Huang,Guohua Jia

Perovskites have attracted considerable interest as potential photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen generation. Nonetheless, their intrinsic instability in aqueous media significantly constrains their practical deployment in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. To address this challenge, we propose a versatile strategy for stabilizing Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 (CBB) perovskite photocatalysts through combining zwitterionic ligand encapsulation with Sn 4+ doping. The zwitterionic ligand, synthesized by reacting 4-bromobutyric acid (BBA) with oleylamine (OLA), was employed to passivate the perovskite surface by anchoring to both Bi 3+ and Br − sites, effectively mitigating surface defects. Notably, Sn 4+ doping is essential for aqueous stability, as the incorporation of Sn 4+ not only enhances the intrinsic stability of CBB but also reinforces the binding affinity of surface ligands. As a result, the Sn 4+ -doped CBB (CBBS x ) with ligand encapsulation demonstrates remarkable stability, retaining its structural integrity in water for over six months and withstanding more than three cycles of photocatalytic testing. Importantly, this strategy demonstrates considerable generality, as it can be readily extended to the synthesis of other halide perovskites. Specifically, the MoS x -loaded Sn 4+ :Cs 3 Bi 2 Br x I 9-x (MoS x /CBBIS 0.2 ) composite achieves a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 18.2 mmol h −1  g −1 , which represents the highest performance reported to date among Bi-based perovskite photocatalysts.

Sequential passivation strategy enables ultra‑stable CsPbX3 perovskite quantum dots for high‑color‑rendering white light‑emitting diodes

Teng Gao,Tianshu Chen,Haijiang Tian,Qiusheng Lin,Hongping Duan,Siyuan Li,Bosen Zhang

All-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite quantum dots (CsPbX 3 QDs) exhibit exceptional optoelectronic properties but suffer from poor stability under ambient conditions, which severely limits their practical applications. In this work, a sequential passivation strategy was developed to simultaneously enhance the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and long-term stability of CsPbX 3 QDs. First, 4-bromobutyric acid (BBA) and oleylamine (OLA) were employed as co-ligands during a recrystallization synthesis in aqueous solution, yielding BBA/OLA-capped CsPbX 3 QDs with improved water resistance. Subsequently, the as-prepared QDs were further treated with phenethylammonium bromide (PEABr) to passivate residual surface defects, particularly bromide vacancies, forming a dense hydrophobic ligand shell. Systematic characterization using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV–vis absorption, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the sequential passivation not only refines the morphology and crystallinity but also significantly suppresses non-radiative recombination. The resulting PEABr/BBA/OLA-CsPbX 3 QDs exhibit superior stability under various harsh conditions, including high humidity (70% RH), water immersion, continuous UV irradiation (365 nm), and elevated temperatures (up to 100 °C). As a proof of concept, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) was fabricated using the passivated QDs as the green-emitting layer together with a commercial InGaN blue chip and CsPb(Br/I) 3 red QDs. The device achieves Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.3302, 0.3261), a correlated color temperature of 5650 K, and a high color rendering index of 96, demonstrating stable white emission under varying driving currents. This sequential passivation strategy provides a facile and effective route to high-performance, ultra-stable CsPbX 3 QDs for next-generation display and solid-state lighting applications.

Dual Organic-Inorganic Encapsulation and Ternary Heterojunction Engineering Toward Water-Resistant CsPbBr3 Perovskite Photocatalysts for Hydrogen Production

Chun Sun,Jiabao Bai,Ruifeng Wang,Zhengtao Qiu,Jiazhi Cui,Yuxin Zhang,Zekang Zang,Dan Huang,William W. Yu

Metal halide perovskites are promising photocatalysts for solar hydrogen production but suffer from severe water instability. Herein, a dual organic-inorganic encapsulation strategy is developed to construct water-resistant CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals. Hydrophobic zwitterionic ligands, in combination with an epitaxial CsPb 2 Br 5 shell, effectively isolate the CsPbBr 3 core from water while maintaining structural integrity. To overcome the carrier-blocking effect induced by encapsulation, hollow CoS x is introduced to form a sandwich-like heterostructure, in which CsPbBr 3 is spatially confined between CoS x and CsPb 2 Br 5 . This architecture enables directional charge transfer via a Schottky CoS x /CsPbBr 3 interface for efficient electron extraction and a type-II CsPbBr 3 @CsPb 2 Br 5 heterojunction for hole transport. Benefiting from the synergistic stabilization and charge-management effects, the resulting photocatalyst achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 5.36 mmol h −1 g −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 4.19% at 420 nm, while maintaining stable performance over five cycles. This work provides a general strategy for integrating multi-layer encapsulation with carrier-selective interfaces to realize durable and efficient perovskite photocatalysts for aqueous hydrogen evolution.

Fully Aqua-Mediated Ripening of Perovskite Quantum Dots with 98% PLQY and Self-Assembly into Bioimaging Nanoparticles

Junyang Yin,Jie Zhang,Wen Pan,Zhenzi Wu,Feng Wu,Jiangnan Dai,Jiajun Luo,Changqing Chen

Ongoing research on perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) spanning diverse areas such as crystallography and biology represents a rapidly expanding frontier in nanotechnology, yet is still limited by the poor water stability and inadequate biocompatibility. Herein, this study reports an ultra-simplified, eco-friendly, cost-effective, and industrial-grade fully aqua-mediated ripening (FAMR) technique for aqueous-PQDs (APQDs) with tunable spectra, achieved by directly stirring the raw precursors with zwitterionic ligands in water at a set pH via Ostwald ripening crystallization. These APQDs exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of up to 82.8% (blue), 98.2% (green), and 92.4% (red), respectively. Owing to the highly efficient bidentate binding of zwitterionic ligands onto APQDs surfaces, as confirmed by theoretical studies, the APQDs demonstrate excellent water storage stability for over 1 month and can retain an impressive 83% of the initial PL intensity after 3 months when transferred to EtOH. With elevated exciton binding energy, extended carrier lifetimes, and lower defect density, APQDs also outperform conventional oil-phase PQDs in terms of thermal and UV irradiation stability. Based on this, water-soluble fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized through self-assembly of APQDs and DSPE-PEG 2000 using EtOH and water as biphasic solvents. Finally, the APQDs@NPs, possessing desired luminescence and biocompatibility, exhibited excellent bioimaging performance in U251 cells.

Remote Control of Mechanical Forces via Mitochondrial-Targeted Magnetic Nanospinners for Efficient Cancer Treatment

Mengwei Chen,Jiaojiao Wu,Peng Ning,Jingjing Wang,Zuan Ma,Liqun Huang,Gustavo R. Plaza,Yajing Shen,Chang Xu,Yu Han,Maciej S. Lesniak,Zhongmin Liu,Yu Cheng

In cells, mechanical forces play a key role in impacting cell behaviors, including adhesion, differentiation, migration, and death. Herein, a 20 nm mitochondria-targeted zinc-doped iron oxide nanocube is designed as a nanospinner to exert mechanical forces under a rotating magnetic field (RMF) at 15 Hz and 40 mT to fight against cancer. The nanospinners can efficiently target the mitochondria of cancer cells. By means of the RMF, the nanocubes assemble in alignment with the external field and produce a localized mechanical force to impair the cancer cells. Both in vitro and in vivo studies show that the nanospinners can damage the cancer cells and reduce the brain tumor growth rate after the application of the RMF. This nanoplatform provides an effective magnetomechanical approach to treat deep-seated tumors in a spatiotemporal fashion.

CsPbBr3@PbSO4 nanocomposites with near-unity photoluminescence and ultrastability via in-water in situ embedding synthesis strategy

Junyang Yin,Feng Wu,Jiangnan Dai,Changqing Chen

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are emerging as promising nanomaterials for optoelectronic applications. However, developing a cost-effective green synthesis process that simultaneously possesses satisfactory photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and stability remains a severe challenge. Here, CsPbBr 3 @PbSO 4 nanocomposites with a near-unity PLQY of 99.8 % and robust ambient stability are synthesized in situ in water via 4-Bromobenzenesulfonic acid and ditetradecylamine ligands. Notably, these nanocomposites show no decline in PLQY even after being immersed in water for over 250 days, and also exhibit superior stability against heating, ultrasonication, UV irradiation, anion exchange, and erosion by polar solvents. First-principles calculations reveal that CsPbBr 3 @PbSO 4 nanocomposites can form a natural quantum well structure, which effectively promotes the radiative recombination of carriers in CsPbBr 3 QDs. Meanwhile, the remarkable stability is attributed to the ultrahigh decomposition enthalpy of PbSO 4 that serves as a strong barrier preventing the invasion of anions and polar media into the embedded CsPbBr 3 QDs. Finally, besides the convenient application of green fluorescent paper, a fingerprint recognition is demonstrated by fabricating a bright-green LED integrated with the CsPbBr 3 @PbSO 4 nanocomposites powder and a commercial UV chip. This work provides a new strategy for green synthesis and practical application of high-efficient and ultrastable PQDs.

Engineered a Gemcitabine Nano-Prodrug Targeting Desmoplastic Pancreatic Tumor with Dual Enhancement of Penetration Dynamics

Qida Hu,Fu Zhang,Bowen Li,Piaopiao Jin,Junming Huang,Zhuo Yao,Xinyu Zhao,Shiyi Shao,Meng Wang,Yuan Ping,Tingbo Liang

The desmoplastic nature characterized by dense tissue and poor vascular conditions in pancreatic cancer (PDAC) poses a significant barrier to effective chemotherapy. Targeting the extracellular matrix and reducing desmoplasia in the tumor microenvironment is a rational approach to improve the penetration and efficacy of gemcitabine (GEM) in PDAC. Herein, a small molecular self-assembly nano-prodrug is developed for the “three-in-one” co-delivery of GEM chemotherapeutics, all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), and nitric oxide (NO) donors, decorated with PDAC-homing targeting peptide. Stimulated by the PDAC microenvironment, the nano-prodrug releases ATRA that quiesces activated pancreatic stellate cells to alleviate stromal desmoplasia. Simultaneously, it generates abundant NO to induce a vasodilatory effect as well as a “nanomotor” effect. This combinational nano-prodrug delivery strategy, with a dual enhancement of drug penetration dynamics, effectively improves the distribution and bioavailability of the co-delivered GEM into the deep and dense pancreatic tumor tissue, which leads to significant amplification of tumor growth inhibition in different PDAC mouse models.

Aqueous-Phase Preparation of Core–Shell Perovskite Nanorods Encapsulated in Polydopamine with Ultrahigh Water Stability

Qile Li,Shuochen Fan,Xiaodong Luan,Ke Xu,Xianqi Wei,Qinlin Shao,Huaping Peng,Linxing Shi

All-inorganic perovskite CsPbBr 3 (CPB) nanocrystals (NCs) are not widely applied in aqueous environments due to their readily decomposable nature. Therefore, the aqueous-phase preparation of CPB NCs has been a considerable challenge. In this work, a feasible method is proposed for preparing aqueous-phase core–shell CPB nanorods (NRs) encapsulated with polydopamine (PDA) by employing a multifunctional additive cesium trifluoroacetate (Cs-TFA). Highly luminescent TFA-CPB NRs are obtained via a chemical transformation of Cs 4 PbBr 6 NCs in water. Subsequently, PDA constitutes a robust shell on the surface of TFA-CPB NRs through the covalent oxidative polymerization, which effectively reduces the original dynamic properties of surface ligands, retards the decomposition of ligands and inhibits the leakage of Pb 2+ ions. The results demonstrate that the fluorescence intensity of TFA-CPB@PDA NRs maintains 49.3% of the initial intensity after 136 days. Meanwhile, the NRs exhibit low cytotoxicity, and the cell viability remains at 80% when the concentration of the NRs is 200 μg mL −1 . The reliable preparation of aqueous-phase core–shell perovskite NRs (PNRs) will facilitate their development in many fields, such as materials science, biology, medicine, and their applications in aqueous environments.
