Synthesis of UiO–66–NH2(Ti/Zr) and its Catalytic Conversion of Cellulose to 5-HMF

Xu Lingling,Pan Xiaomei,Gao Lijing,Wei Ruiping,Li Jihang,Wen Xiu,Li Yuanzhuang,Xiao Guomin

UiO–66–NH 2 (Ti/Zr) modified by Ti metal oxide (TiO 2 ) was used to catalyze the hydrolysis of cellulose to prepare 5-HMF. Under the optimal reaction conditions of H 2 O(NaCl)/THF(1/4 mL), 190 °C, 2 h and 50 mg UNT-3(Ti/Zr) (TiO 2 and UiO–66–NH 2 with mass of 1.5 and 0.1 g, respectively), the yield of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural reached 59.88%. UiO–66–NH 2 (Ti/Zr) nanocomposites with different mass ratios were successfully prepared by simple solvent evaporation method. SEM and TEM have shown that the modified UiO–66–NH 2 (Ti/Zr) are wrapped into sphere by TiO 2 densely attached to the surface of UiO–66–NH 2 , which provides favorable conditions for the uniform dispersion of TiO 2 and coordination of the Lewis acidic site of UiO–66–NH 2 . NH 3 –TPD results confirmed the existence of super-strong, strong, middle and weak acid sites in UiO–66–NH 2 (Ti/Zr), and Py-FTIR confirmed the existence of Brønsted and Lewis acids. After four cycles, the yield of 5-HMF and FUR decreased slightly from 59.88 to 51.89% and 9.11 to 7.66%, respectively, and the yield of 5-HMF could still remain above 50%. The results showed that the modified composite treatment of TiO 2 with rich Lewis acid/base and UiO–66–NH 2 could provide a certain idea for the extensive application of biomass research in the future. Microwave-Assisted Catalytic Conversion of 5-HMF for Biofuel Additives by Molybdophosphoric Acid Encapsulated KCC-1

Srinivasan Vinju Vasudevan,Jin Cai,Junming Xu,Hongjian Lin,Hongliang Wang,Quan Bu

In this work, the microwave-assisted reaction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) into valuable ether and acylated production formation was investigated with the help of molybdophosphoric acid encapsulated dendritic fibrous silica (KCC-1) as a catalyst. XRD, N2adsorption-desorption, SEM, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, and TEM were used to analyze the physicochemical and structural properties of the synthesized catalysts. The microwave etherification of 5-HMF with ethanol was tested using synthesized catalysts. The effects of the reaction temperature, reaction time, catalytic amount, and microwave power were investigated. The resulting MPA-KCC-1 and IMPA-KCC-1 catalysts demonstrated excellent activity for the etherification of 5-HMF with ethanol, producing 5-(hydroxymethyl) furfural diethyl acetal (HMFDEA) and 5-(ethoxymethyl)furfural diethyl acetal (EMFDEA) products selectively. The significant advantages of the work are the selective production of EMFDEA at 82%, the catalyst can be easily removed via filtration, and the catalyst activity remains nearly intact even after five reaction cycles.Keywords:biomass;acetylation;5-HMF;etherification;heteropolyacid;fibrous silica

Acid-Base Bifunctional Metal-Organic Frameworks: Green Synthesis and Application in One-Pot Glucose to 5-HMF Conversion

Yunlei Zhang,Pei Jin,Minjia Meng,Lin Gao,Meng Liu,Yongsheng Yan

The direct synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with acidic and basic active sites is challenging due to the introduction of functional groups by post-functionalization method often jeopardize the framework integrity. Herein, we report the direct synthesis of acid-base bi-functional MOFs with tuning acid-base strength. Employing modulated hydrothermal (MHT) approach, microporous MOFs named UiO-66-NH 2 was prepared. Through the ring-opening reaction of 1,3-propanesultone with amino group, UiO-66-NH 2 -SO 3 H-type catalysts can be obtained. The synthesized catalysts were well characterized and their catalytic performances were evaluated in one-pot glucose to 5-HMF conversion. Results revealed the acid-base bi-functional catalyst possessed high activity and excellent stability. This work provides a general and economically viable approach for the large-scale synthesis of acid-base bi-functional MOFs for their potential use in catalysis field.

Low-Temperature Plasma Modification of Lignin-Derived Carbon Solid Acid Catalyst for Catalytic Production of 5-HMF

Lv Shijun,Deng Xiaoya,Zhu Peiwen,Ruan Lingyu,Tao Yuheng,Wang Liqun,Zhu Jie,Qing Qing

Sulfonated carbon catalysts exhibit superior catalytic performance for production of biobased chemicals, but the catalyst preparation approaches are still suffered from high corrosion and possible pollution risks. In this paper, lignin extracted from corn stover was used to prepare lignin-based activated carbon, which was then subjected to grafting modification by sulfur dioxide nonthermal plasma method to construct a novel lignin-derived solid acid catalyst (LP-LDSA). The catalytic performances of LP-LDSA were further determined by dehydration of fructose to produce 5-HMF in a biphasic solvent system composed by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water. Under the optimal conditions, the 5-HMF yield and reaction selectivity were 88.9% and 89.4%, respectively. This LP-LDSA catalyst also exhibited excellent stability and reusability in five sequential reaction batches. This method has advantages of shorter solid acid preparation duration, lower energy consumption, and higher catalytic stability, presenting an innovative and green method for sulfonation production of solid acid catalyst. Defective MIL-53(Al)-NH2: A bifunctional Lewis-Brønsted acid catalyst for efficient 5-HMF production from glucose

Mengjiao Yu,Xiong-Fei Zhang,Siting Yang,Yunhua Bai,Zhongguo Wang,Jianfeng Yao

Developing functional catalysts with both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites is an essential task for achieving the direct conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a process that is crucial for the sustainable production of renewable fuels and chemicals. In this work, a mixed-linker strategy is proposed to prepare defective MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 by introducing trifluoroacetic acid into the MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 synthesis process. The creation of defects facilitates the exposure and accessibility of Al 3+ centers, as well as changes the coordination environment within the MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 skeleton. Both the number of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are boosted, which is beneficial for glucose activation and 5-HMF generation. Through optimizing the reaction conditions, a glucose conversion of 98.3 % with a 5-HMF yield of 59.3 % was achieved by using defective 6d-MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 in a biphasic tetrahydrofuran/H 2 O NaCl system. Moreover, the 6d-MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 catalyst showed excellent recyclability and reusability, with its catalytic efficiency maintained almost unchanged for consecutive 10 cycles. The catalytic mechanism was elucidated and the acidity of the Lewis and Brønsted acid was modulated by defect engineering to achieve exceptional performance.

Highly selective oxidation of 5-HMF to HMFCA via a facile Pt-Ag co-catalytic strategy

Ming-Kun Ke,Yuan Min,Shu-Chuan Mei,Hou-Wei Zeng,Zhao-Hua Wang,Tian-Wei Hua,Jie-Jie Chen,Gui-Xiang Huang,Han-Qing Yu

5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA) is an important feedstock in chemical and pharmaceutical industries . Its production through aerobic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) has promising prospects but is challenged by the over-oxidation. In this work, we develop a refined Pt-Ag co-catalytic strategy to tailor the selectivity of 5-HMF’s aerobic oxidation. By simple in situ addition of AgNO 3 to the thermal catalytic system of Pt nanoparticles , the main products of 5-HMF oxidation could be shifted from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) to HMFCA with an ultrahigh selectivity of over 99 %. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that such strategy could alter the HMFCA adsorption sites from Pt to Ag sites and prevent the oxidation of hydroxymethyl group . In addition, this strategy can be extended to other Ag species, such as AgCl, Ag 2 O and AgO. This work provides insights into the Pt-Ag synergistic catalysis and opens up a simple avenue to control the product selectivity for biomass refinement.

Sensitive photoelectric sensing for 5-HMF detection

Xin He,Caiyun Jiang,Jie Yang,Shuangchao Sheng,Yuping Wang

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a heterocyclic compound with six carbons commonly found in heat-treated carbohydrate-rich foods. 5-HMF exceeding the specified limit is cytotoxic to the human body, and will be converted into carcinogenic substances (5-sulfoxide methyl furfural) after long-term accumulation in the body. Therefore, it is highly necessary to develop a sensitive and accurate detection method for 5-HMF in the field of food safety. In this study, a photoelectric sensing method was developed for the highly sensitive detection of 5-HMF using hollow TiO2 nanospheres successfully synthesized by template, sol–gel and lye etching methods. The structure and composition of the materials were studied by XRD, XPS, SEM and TEM. The electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties of an h-TiO2 electrode probe based on indium tin oxide (ITO) slides were investigated. The results indicated that the linear relationship of 5-HMF is good in the concentration range of 10−11–10−7 M, and the detection limit of 5-HMF is 0.001 nM. Moreover, the PEC sensor shows high accuracy in the detection of actual samples.

Exploring the formation pathway and antioxidant properties of the sugar-smoking pigment 5-GGMF

Teng Liu,Yumin Niu,Kexin Cheng,Qichao Fei,Dengyong Liu

The present study aimed to elucidate the pathway of pigment formation and identify the source of antioxidant activity during sugar smoking. Building upon previous research, this investigation replicated the sucrose cleavage process involved in sugar-smoking through model reactions to obtain distinct model reaction products. The products were analyzed using various techniques such as ultraviolet–visible spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The findings revealed that the pyrolysis of sucrose at 330 °C yielded glucose and fructose, with fructose pyrolysis producing significantly more 5-HMF than glucose. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of 5-HMF was found to make a substantial contribution. The primary source of 5-HMF was identified as fructose resulting from the cleavage of sucrose at 330 °C, while the primary pathway for the formation of the sugar-smoking pigment 5-GGMF was attributed to the intermolecular dehydration of 5-HMF and glucose at 150 °C.

Identification of key constituent of sugar-smoking pigment and its photobleaching, antioxidant and antiproliferative properties

Yufeng Zou,Jianbo Zhang,Yumin Niu,Dengyong Liu

The key constituent(s) of sugar-smoking brown pigments were identified, the chemical and biological properties were subsequently investigated, and the possibility of obtaining it from nature was explored. A pigment was isolated, which was identified as condensation product of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfuraldehyde (5-HMF) with glucose: 5-(α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1–6)-α-D-glucopyranosyloxymenthyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde (5-GGMF). The molecular weight was 450.00. The interaction between pigment with protein on chicken skin was mainly via hydrogen and carbon-hydrogen bonds. It was obtained by caramelization instead of Maillard reaction. Discoloration of sugar-smoking pigments were mainly due to cleavage of chromophores caused by the oxidation reaction followed by photobleaching mechanism. Both radical scavenging and antiproliferative capacity of sugar-smoking pigment were in a dose-dependent manner. However, the IC 50 values for HepG2 and PANC-1 cells differed by more than ten times. Since 5-GGMF is also present in plant resources (like Rehmanniae Radix ), it can be obtained as natural additive to produce clean label sugar-smoked meat products.

5-HMF inhibits glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis through the VEGFR2/PI3K/AKT pathway

Liu Siqi,Fang Fei,Jiang Yu

Chronic administration of glucocorticoids are being linked to an increased risk of osteoporosis. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a natural compound that possesses various biological activities, including osteogenic regulation. In this research, we sought to investigate the potential of 5-HMF to exert protective effects against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. In cellular investigations, we deployed Western Blot (WB), Real-Time Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin S-red (ARS) staining to scrutinize the expression of osteogenic differentiation markers within MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts and BMSCs. We used dexamethasone to establish a mouse model for glucocorticoid-Induced osteoporosis and administered 5-HMF to evaluate its influence on bone density and architecture through the use of micro-CT and histological analysis. In addition, we employed network pharmacology to elucidate the potential pathways and targets of 5-HMF. Finally, we explored the effect of AKT knockout on the treatment of 5-HMF. We found that 5-HMF significantly enhanced VEGFR2 phosphorylation, reestablishing angiogenesis and activating the PI3K/AKT pathway in vitro and in vivo. 5-HMF also inhibited Dexamethasone -induced apoptosis by regulating Bax and Bcl-2 expression. MK2206, an AKT inhibitor, abrogated 5-HMF’s protective properties against GCs. These results indicate that 5-HMF counteracts the negative effects of GCs on osteoblasts and has good bone-promoting differentiation effects.

Efficient conversion of 5-HMF to FDCA over MOF-on-MOF derived catalyst

Rui Zhang,Shimin Li,Jiale Chen,Jiantao Li,Jian Xiong,Zhihao Yu,Xuebin Lu

A template-assisted approach was employed to synthesize a MOF-on-MOF derived catalyst for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Characterization revealed that the catalyst forms a cobalt–manganese metal oxide composite phase with a hierarchical porous structure and uniformly distributed Co/Mn active sites. The oxygen vacancies work together with the Lewis acid sites to gradually oxidize the hydroxyl and aldehyde groups in 5-HMF. In the context of reaction conditions that have been identified as optimal (140 °C, 6 h, 50 mg catalyst, 5.88 mol L−1 H2O2), the yield of FDCA was 87.55%, accompanied by 5-HMF conversion rate of 98.66%. The catalyst exhibited exceptional cycling stability, sustaining an FDCA yield exceeding 75% across five cycles. Mechanism studies indicate that the Co–Mn bimetallic synergistic effect optimizes the reaction pathway through electron transfer and oxygen species activation, while the microporous structure prolongs the residence time of intermediates through confinement effect, promoting multi-step oxidation. Compared with the single-metal MOFs derived catalysts, this catalyst has significantly improved adsorption performance and oxidation efficiency, providing an efficient solution for the green synthesis of the bio-based polyester monomer FDCA.

Microwave assisted rapid conversion of fructose into 5-HMF over solid acid catalysts

Jie Wang,Ting Qu,Minsi Liang,Zhenbo Zhao

In this work, we investigated the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using solid catalysts with microwave assistance in dimethyl sulfoxide. Five kinds of solid catalyst ZrO2, WOx/ZrO2, MoOx/ZrO2, SO42−/WOx–ZrO2 and SO42−/MoOx–ZrO2 were prepared and characterized by XRD, UV-DRS, FTIR, XPS, TEM, TPD, BET, and Raman and the surface acid amount was obtained by combining pyridine adsorption and UV spectrometry. The SO42−/WOx–ZrO2 catalyst was found be the most active catalyst, and a fructose conversion of 95.80% with 83.90% 5-HMF yield was obtained at 150 °C in a relatively short reaction time of 5 min. The value of the activation energy was comparable with previous values reported in the literature, implying that SO42−/WOx–ZrO2 was efficient for the dehydration of fructose to 5-HMF and that microwave radiation heating had a remarkable accelerating effect on the fructose conversion.
