The collision cross-section (CCS) values of ions determined by ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) can be used to deduce the shape and size of the ions. For each compound, as well as its isomer or tautomer, a unique arrival time peak was obtained in extracted ion mobility (EIM) spectra, which corresponded to a specific CCS value. However, the generation of solvated ions by electrospray ionization (ESI) increases the number of mobility peaks, which makes the EIM spectra difficult to interpret. In this study, solvent clusters formed by acetonitrile and methanol around 1,8-naphthalic anhydride (1,8-NA) cations ([C12H6O3 + H]+1,8-NA) were investigated using trapped ion mobility spectrometry-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TIMS-TOF MS). The effects of infusion flow rate, nebulizer gas pressure, drying gas rate, and drying gas temperature on the formation of solvent clusters from acetonitrile and methanolic solution were systematically studied. The formation of solvent clusters was observed with infusion flow rates increased, which was manifested by the larger experimental CCS values of [C12H6O3 + H]+1,8-NA. Acetonitrile tended to form solvent clusters around ions more readily than methanol. These solvent clusters were stable enough to be detected by TIMS, but they cannot survive under ion activation conditions of mass spectrometry (MS). Increasing the nebulizer gas pressure seems to be a better way to eliminate the formation of solvent clusters in TIMS-TOF MS and give a “cleaner” EIM spectra. The current research demonstrates that more attention should be paid to the solvent effect on CCS values and their interpretation.

The pH-responsive fluorescent P(1,8-naphthalic anhydride (NA)-acrylic acid (AA)) matrix was successfully prepared by a doping method using poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a pH-sensitive polymer and NA as a fluorescent tracer. The fluorescent behaviors of the used NA dispersed in PAA frameworks were demonstrated based on fractal features combined with various characterizations, such as small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) patterns, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, thermogravimetry (TG) profiles, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and time-resolved decays. The effects of NA-doping on the representative fluorescent P(NA-AA) were investigated, in which the fluorescent performance of the doped NA was emphasized. The results indicated that aggregated clusters of the doped NA were gradually serious with an increase in NA doping amount or extension of NA doping time, accompanied by an increase in mass fractal dimension (Dm) values. Meanwhile, the doped NA presented stable fluorescent properties during the swelling–shrinking process of PAA. Ibuprofen (IBU) was used as a model drug, and fractal evolutions of the obtained P(NA-AA) along with the drug loading and releasing behaviors were evaluated via SAXS patterns, in which the drug-loaded P(NA-AA) presented surface fractal (Ds)characteristics, while theDmvalue varied from 2.94 to 2.58 during sustained drug-release in pH 2.0, indicating occurrences of its structural transformation from dense to loose with extension of IBU-releasing time. Finally, the cytotoxicity and cellular uptake behaviors of the obtained P(NA-AA) were preliminarily explored. These demonstrations revealed that the resultant P(NA-AA) should be a potential intelligent-responsive drug carrier for targeted delivery. Keywords:dispersion;drug delivery;poly(acrylic acid);1,8-naphthalic anhydride;fluorescence;fractal;pH-sensitive

The Fe 3+ -modified 1, 8-naphthalic anhydride (Fe-NA) was prepared, and thereafter successfully grafted on the mesoporous surface of bimodal mesopores material (BMMs) by post-synthesis method. The influence of various parameters, including amount of Fe 3+ ion, various solvents, different concentrations and loadings of FC-NA on the fluorescence behavior of resultant hybrid materials (FC-NA grafted BMMs) was investigated, and then its fluorescence properties were compared to the parent FC-NA. Meanwhile, their structural properties and photoluminescence performances were investigated using various characterizations XRD , TEM , SEM, SAXS , FT-IR, TGA, ICP-OES, elemental analysis , N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and fluorescence measurement. The results showed that the mesoporous structural integrity was remained intact after introduction of FC-NA in the mesoporous channels of APTES-BMMs. Particularly, SAXS patterns revealed the mass fractal dimension of the hybrid FC-NA@BMMs were gradually increased with increasing loaded amount of FC-NA, and resulted in the uneven distribution and self-similarity fractal features. The fluorescence profiles exhibited the occurrence of red-shifts and then blue-shifts of characteristic peak with increasing grafted FC-NA amount. These shifts demonstrated a highly aggregation on the amine-modified mesoporous surface of APTES-BMMs when the obtained mass ratio of FC-NA/AP-BMMs was lower than 0.2, whereas a uniform monodispersion distribution was observed when the mass ratio got higher than 0.2. The obtained functionalized mesoporous materials with enhanced fluorescence intensity have a potential application in drug sustained/controlled delivery systems.
