Molten salt aluminum-sulfur batteries are based exclusively on resourcefully sustainable materials, and are promising for large-scale energy storage owed to their high-rate capability and moderate energy density; but the operating temperature is still high, prohibiting their applications. Here we report a rapid-charging aluminium-sulfur battery operated at a sub-water-boiling temperature of 85 °C with a tamed quaternary molten salt electrolyte. The quaternary alkali chloroaluminate melt – possessing abundant electrochemically active high-order Al-Cl clusters and yet exhibiting a low melting point – facilitates fast Al 3+ desolvation. A nitrogen-functionalized porous carbon further mediates the sulfur reaction, enabling the battery with rapid-charging capability and excellent cycling stability with 85.4% capacity retention over 1400 cycles at a charging rate of 1 C. Importantly, we demonstrate that the asymmetric sulfur reaction mechanism that involves formation of polysulfide intermediates, as revealed by operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, accounts for the high reaction kinetics at such temperature wherein the thermal management can be greatly simplified by using water as the heating media.

Power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term stability are two vital issues for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, there is still a lack of suitable hole transport layers (HTLs) to endow PSCs with both high efficiency and stability. Here, NiO x nanoparticles are promoted as an efficient and 85 °C/85%-stable inorganic HTL for high-performance n-i-p PSCs, with the introduction of perovskite quantum dots (QDs) between perovskite and NiO x as systematic interfacial engineering. The QD intercalation enhances film morphology and assembly regulation of NiO x HTLs . Due to structure–function correlations, hole mobility within NiO x HTL is improved. And the hole extraction from perovskite to NiO x is also facilitated, resulting from reduced trap states and optimized energy level alignments. Hence, the promoted NiO x -based n-i-p PSCs exhibit high PCE (21.59%) and excellent stability (sustaining 85 °C aging in air without encapsulation). Furthermore, encapsulated solar modules with QDs-promoted NiO x HTLs show impressive stability during 85 °C/85% aging test for 1000 hours. With high transparency, QDs-promoted NiO x is also demonstrated to be an advanced HTL for semitransparent PSCs. This work develops promising NiO x inorganic HTL in n-i-p PSCs for manufacturing next-generation photovoltaic devices.

CsPbI3 as a newly emerging semiconductor material has displayed tremendous prospects for optoelectronic applications. However, the poor photoactive black-phase stability limits its further application. In this work, we introduce transition metal nickel ion (Ni2+) as a B-site substitute into CsPbI3 nanocrystals (NCs) to stabilize their black phase. The optimized CsPbI3 NCs film presents a record photoactive black-phase stability time of 54 hours under the conditions of 85 °C and 85% relative humidity, over 108 times that of the undoped film. Furthermore, the Ni2+-doped CsPbI3 NCs solutions maintain bright red emission after vigorous stirring with an equal volume of water for 200 hours (the undoped solution is almost completely quenched), and also show bright red emission after being stored in the air for 200 days (the undoped solution is completely quenched within 43 days). Meanwhile, the photoluminescence quantum yield increased from 31.48% for undoped CsPbI3 NCs to 87.69% for doped Ni-3.65% CsPbI3 NCs. We suggest that these outstanding stabilities and excellent optical properties can mainly be attributed to the increased defect formation energy after rational Ni doping and lattice adjustment by partial replacement of Pb2+ with small-sized Ni2+. Our work provides guidance for the synthesis of phase-stabilized CsPbI3 NCs and an insight into the effect of B-site doping in a perovskite lattice, providing a promising pathway to construct stable and efficient photoelectronic devices.

Almost all proton-conducting materials display poor conductivity at subzero temperatures, which significantly limits their application in cold regions. Thus, effective strategies to achieve high proton conductivity in a wide range from subzero to medium temperatures (−40 to 85 °C) need to be developed. Herein, we prepared proton-conductive materials by encapsulating the acid–base adduct based on Keggin-type H3PW12O40 (HPW) and aminoethanesulfonic acid (C2H7O3NS, HSN) in the linear channels of SBA-15 (named HPW-HSN@SBA-15). The result is the same as we expected: HPW-HSN@SBA-15 exhibits high proton conductivity over a wide temperature range (−40 to 85 °C). The proton conductivity of 75 wt % HPW-HSN@SBA-15 (3HPW-HSN@SBA-15) reaches 0.16 S cm–1 at 85 °C, 97% relative humidity (RH), and 6.8 × 10–5 S cm–1 at −40 °C. The excellent proton conductivity at subzero temperature of HPW-HSN@SBA-15 is mainly attributed to the ultrafast proton transfer with low energy barrier between proton donor (acid group) and proton acceptor (base group) in acid–base adduct without the attendance of water. Furthermore, the proton conductivity cycle test of 3HPW-HSN@SBA-15 demonstrates its good durability and stability.
