The preparation of cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and highly selective adsorbents is crucial for capturing 90 Sr from radionuclide-contaminated wastewater due to its long half-life and chemical toxicity. In this study, a novel IDA-type chelating resin (PS-IDA) was synthesized by chloroacetylating polystyrene (PS) and introducing iminodiacetic acid (IDA) onto it. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the adsorption of Sr 2+ on PS-IDA, including pH, contact time, initial concentration of Sr 2+ , and competing ions. The results indicated that pH 10 was the optimal condition for maximum Sr 2+ ion adsorption. According to isotherm and kinetic data, the adsorption was well-fitted to the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Notably, PS-IDA exhibited a high removal rate at pH 10, removing 98.0% and 99.6% of non-radioactive Sr 2+ and 90 Sr, respectively. In simulative groundwater, PS-IDA demonstrated remarkable selectivity for trace levels of 90 Sr ( 90 Sr: Na + : K + : Cs + : Mg 2+ molar ratio = 1: 6.6 × 10 15 : 3.8 × 10 14 : 2.5 × 10 14 : 1.5 × 10 13 ), indicating its potential for selective capture of 90 Sr from contaminated groundwater. Furthermore, PS-IDA resin with a suitable diameter and improved mechanical strength can be used for large-scale remediation of 90 Sr-contaminated wastewater by column chromatography method. Finally, the adsorption mechanism was explained based on experimental data and characterizations which included ion exchange between Sr 2+ in the solution with H + on the resin and then the formation of chelates between adsorbed Sr 2+ and O, N atoms from IDA.

Objectives: Radioactivity monitoring around nuclear facilities is crucial to provide important baseline data for effective detection of radioactive leakage to the environment. We aim to establish a baseline study for monitoring radioactive levels of 90Sr and 137Cs around Sammen Nuclear Power Plant (SNPP) and to assess their associated health impact on surrounding residents. Methods: In this study, we collected water and food samples around the SNPP from 2011 to 2020 and determined for 90Sr and 137Cs activity concentrations. We statistically analyzed the temporal trends of 90Sr and 137Cs and evaluated their radiation exposure to the local residents. Results: During this period, the activity concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs varied within 1.2–9.9 mBq/L and 0.10–7.6 mBq/L in water, and 0.037–1.3 Bq/kg and 0.011–0.45 Bq/kg in food, respectively, with no significant seasonal variation trend. Conclusions: All reported activity concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs were significantly lower than the recommended value of WHO and Chinese national standards. There is no indication of notable radioactive release into the study area due to the operation of SNPP during 2018–2020. The annual effective doses (AEDs) from the ingestion of 90Sr and 137Cs in water and food were well below the international permissible limits, indicating the radiation exposure around SNPP during 2011–2020 was kept at a safe level.

Yttrium-90 ( 90 Y), a beta-emitting radionuclide with suitable half-life and radiation energy, is considered an ideal therapeutic nuclide and has been used for the treatment of inflammatory joint diseases, relapsed or refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and liver metastases of colorectal cancer. It has great potential for application in nuclear medicine. In this work, stable isotopes were employed to simulate the production conditions of curie-level Y-90 in a system with a Sr/Y concentration ratio of 20,000. The electrolysis was conducted with 0.1 M NH 4 NO 3 as the supporting electrolyte, pH adjusted to 2.5, and a current density of 100 mA/cm 2 applied for 3 h, resulting in a Y recovery rate exceeding 98%. Meanwhile, by adjusting the cathode cleaning step, a theoretical purification factor of (6.8 ± 0.8) × 10 5 was achieved in the simulated secondary electrodeposition. Based on this, a six-step process was developed for the simulated production of 2.4 Ci of 90 Y per day and 2.4 Ci per week. The obtained Y recovery liquid theoretically conformed to the requirements for medicinal application.

A simultaneous analytical method for sequential separation and determination of actinides and 90 Sr in large-size environmental samples has been developed. In this method, successive co-precipitation steps were firstly conducted to remove matrix elements, then sequential column separation method was applied for simultaneous separation and purification of actinides and 90 Sr/ 90 Y. By using vacuum box technology, the total analytical time was minimized and batch processing allowed analyzing 12 samples in four days. The activity of 90 Sr was obtained immediately by measuring its daughter radionuclide ( 90 Y) with triple-to-double coincidence ratio (TDCR) Cherenkov counting, while the concentrations of Pu isotopes and 241 Am could be measured by alpha spectrometry and mass spectrometric techniques. The overall recoveries of Pu, Am, Sr and Y were higher than 70% for the entire procedure, while the recovery ratios of Sr/Y were between 0.95 and 1.04 before chromatographic separation . The developed method was verified using 20 g and 50 g of environmental soil samples spiked with certified reference materials IAEA-384 or IAEA-385 and standard solution of 90 Sr/ 90 Y, and good agreement between the expected values and measured results has been achieved.

In this study, a carboxyl-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF) rich in nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) functional groups was prepared and characterized, which provided a new opportunity for the efficient and rapid treatment of radioactive contamination in nuclear wastewater. The synthesis of the COF (Tp-DTA) was constructed using 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) and 2,5-diaminoterephthalic acid (DTA), providing a large specific surface area, mesoporous pore, and abundant coordination sites with high adsorption capacity and exceptional affinity for Sr 2+ . Batch adsorption experiments exhibited that Tp-DTA achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 145.4 mg/g for Sr 2+ in alkaline solutions, reaching adsorption equilibrium within 60 min. Tp-DTA exhibited rapid kinetics for 90 Sr, with the amounts of 90 Sr removed more than 95% within 3 min. In the presence of coexisting ions (Na + , K + , Cs + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ ), Tp-DTA displayed excellent preferential selectivity for Sr 2+ and high removal efficiency. Even in simulated groundwater containing multiple complex ions, Tp-DTA demonstrated a strong affinity for Sr 2+ and showed practical applicability with a nearly 100% removal efficiency for 90 Sr. XPS and FTIR characterizations confirmed that the adsorption mechanism of Sr 2+ involved chelation exchange between the carboxyl groups of Tp-DTA and Sr 2+ in the solution. Furthermore, the desorption efficiency of HCl (>0.01 mol/L) can reach 95% and five cyclic desorption-adsorption experiments demonstrated the reusability of Tp-DTA, endowing the carboxyl-functional COF with great potential in the treatment of 90 Sr-contaminated radioactive wastewater and environmental remediation.

Extraction of 90 Sr from groundwaters is of great significance in energy and ecological environment. Phosphate minerals have been proposed as a suitable matrix for the in-situ remediation of radionuclides from groundwaters by encouraging co-precipitation. However, the understanding of how Sr 2+ precipitate into phosphate minerals affected by grain growth has not been fully resolved. In this work, the precipitation reaction of Sr 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH and SrHPO 4 were studied based on experiments and PHREEQC simulation. Some specific issues such as the precipitation reaction kinetics and the phase evolution during grain growth were discussed in detail, along with investigating the chemical stability of obtained precipitations before and after calcination . The results show that pH appears to be a prevailing factor with a recommended pH = 8 ∼ 11 to obtain the stability domain of Sr 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH and SrHPO 4 to remove Sr 2+ with a removal rate over 98 %. Interestingly, SrHPO 4 is more likely to preferentially nucleate at pH = 8 solution compared to Sr 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, and the poorly crystalline SrHPO 4 tends to disappear over time. TEM and SAXS results show the plate-like nanoparticles of SrHPO 4 are wrapped into the rod-like particles of Sr 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH during the grain growth, and the inner SrHPO 4 can react with Sr 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH to form Sr 3 (PO 4 ) 2 at temperature over 600 ℃. This observation is inconsistent with the previous grain growth result of poorly crystalline SrHPO 4 , where it is believed to recrystallize into more stable Sr 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH crystals over time. Moreover, the Sr-O binding energy plays an important role in controlling the degradation of Sr 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, Sr 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , SrHPO 4 and β -Sr 2 P 2 O 7 .
