Adsorption is considered to be a promising butanol recovery method for solving the issue of inhibition in the ABE (acetone-butanol-ethanol) fermentation. As a byproduct in the second generation biobutanol industry, lignin was found to be a good adsorbent for the butanol enrichment. It is conducive to the full utilization of renewable lignocellulose biomass resource. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments indicated that lignin had a satisfactory adsorption rate and capacity that are comparable to those of many synthetic materials. Multicomponent adsorption experiments revealed that lignin had higher adsorption selectivity toward butanol than that of ethanol and acetone. The adsorption capacity of lignin for butanol first increased and then gradually decreased with increasing temperature. And maximum adsorption capacity reached 304.66 mg g −1 at 313 K. The inflection point of temperature is close to the ABE fermentation temperature of 310 K. The condensed butanol by desorption was 145 g L −1 , with a satisfying regeneration performance. 1 H NMR and FT-IR spectra indicated that the aromatic units of lignin formed π -systems with A/B/E. The π -system is particularly significant for butanol due to its longer hydrocarbon chain. These results could contribute to the emerging lignin-based materials for butanol separation.

Developing a simple and efficient process for the conversion of biomass to petrol, diesel and jet fuels are our urgent mission due to the limitation of fossil fuels. Biobutanol is an important biomass-derived biofuel that can be converted to longer-chain petrol-range, diesel-range and jet-range fuels. Basing on the obtained concentrated acetone-1-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation broth through a prefractionator, we report a palladium-catalysed alkylation of acetone with ethanol and 1-butanol to more efficiently produce C 5 –C 11 fuel precursors in a reactor, where all the precursors and reactants were separated simultaneously by the salting-out effect of K 3 PO 4 . The precursors include ketones and a small amount of alcohols that can be reduced to alkanes for use as liquid transportation fuels. Tuning the reaction conditions can obtain different proportions of C 5 –C 7 products (monoalkylation) and C 9 –C 11 products (double alkylation) and the overall product contents accounted for up to 82 wt%. More than 99.5% of water from the concentrated ABE fermentation broth was removed by the salting-out effect of K 3 PO 4.

The treatment of high chemical oxygen demand (COD) organic wastewater is one of the major technical bottlenecks for the industrialization of second-generation biobutanol production . An effective strategy to decrease the wastewater discharge in biobutanol fermentation process is broth recycling (BR). Nevertheless, the conventional BR process suffered from server organic-acid by-products inhibition, causing low butanol yield. In this study, to solve the barrier, active carbon (AC) adsorption system was hybrid with the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation and ex - situ product separation (ESPR) units. After fermentation and pervaporation , organic acids that remaining in the ABE-separated broth were partially adsorbed onto AC so that improve the continuity and efficiency of the BR process. The physicochemical characterizations of different types of commercial ACs and the organic acids adsorption efficiency was evaluated by analyzing the static and dynamic adsorptions kinetics. When adopting the DD-type AC (code C299105), the better adsorbent for organic acids removal, 87.50% of fermentative wastewater can be saved whilst the ABE concentrations were also kept constantly at 15.22 ± 0.45 g L −1 in the following cycles of fermentation, and the ABE productivity was almost no changed (0.21 ± 0.01 g L −1 h −1 ) after 3 cycles of operation. Therefore, the AC assisted ESPR process is an attractive method for ABE production with low wastewater discharge.

The shortage of fossil resources and strict environmental regulations have ignited great efforts in the production of bio-based fuels and chemicals via biorefinery. Herein, considering the strong interaction between Ni and Mg species, we specially designed and prepared Ni/CaMgO and Ni/MgSiO for alkylation and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reactions during the upgrading of the acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) fermentation mixture. Gratifyingly, the Mg-decorated catalysts exhibited great catalytic performance: a selectivity of 63.9% under a conversion of 94.2% was achieved for C8–C15 ketones and alcohols, which is higher than that over other heterogeneous alkali-based catalysts, and the obtained mixture was completely converted into the corresponding alkanes at 190 °C (H2 pressure: 1 MPa). It is worth noting that jet fuels or gasoline could be efficiently and selectively obtained by facile adjustment of the composition of the ABE fermentation product. Moreover, investigation on the structure–activity correlation confirmed that the outstanding activity of Ni/MgSiO for HDO could be attributed to the synergic catalysis between Ni0 and strong acid sites. The Ni/CaMgO and Ni/MgSiO catalysts reported in this work offer three advantages: selectively upgrading zymotic biomass wastes into biofuels, replacing the expensive noble metal (Pd) by the base metal (Ni), and realizing the HDO process under mild conditions and complying with the principles of “green chemistry”. Overall, this work opens a new possibility for biofuel production, which is conductive to the rational design and implementation of highly active heterogeneous catalysts.

Biobutanol has a high energy density, good miscibility with gasoline, and a low environmental impact; therefore, it is a possible substitute or additive for gasoline. Because biobutanol is typically obtained through so-called ABE fermentation, the effective separation of butanol from the product mixture is important. Ionic liquids (ILs) have been used as extractants, and tailoring the IL structure to promote hydrogen bonding with butanol could improve the extraction performance. In the present work, an amine group was added to the imidazole cation of an IL, paired with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide as the anion. Hydroxyl groups were added to the 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]-undec-7-ene cation, and an imidazolium-based IL was produced by combining hydroxyl with imidazole. The structures of these three ILs were verified by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analyses. The binding energies between these substances and butanol, acetone, and ethanol were calculated using the Gaussian software package based on density functional theory. The results indicated that the interaction energies between N,N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)octan-1-aminium hydroxide imidazole ([C8DIPA][Im]) and butanol, acetone, and ethanol are greater than that with water. These ILs were examined as extractants for the separation of butanol, acetone, or ethanol with water, and the [C8DIPA][Im] exhibited the best performance. Effects of extraction time, extraction temperature, and IL proportion on extraction rate were assessed, and this IL extracted 78%, 34%, and 6% of the three components, respectively. This performance remained stable after 10 recycling trials, and [C8DIPA][Im] was also used to separate the products in an actual ABE fermentation mixture.
