Impact of temperature and salinity on fines detachment: AFM measurements and XDLVO theory

Wei-Feng Yuan,Yu-Long Yang,Lu Yuan,Ji-Rui Hou

Fine particle detachment and subsequent migration can lead to severe pore plugging and consequent permeability decline. Therefore, it is crucial to quantify the critical condition when fine particle detachment occurs. The frequently observed deviations or even contradictions between experimental results and theoretical predictions of fines detachment arise from an insufficient understanding of adhesion force that can be highly influenced by salinity and temperature. To clarify the intrinsic influence of salinity and temperature on fines detachment, adhesion forces between carboxyl microspheres and hydrophilic silica substrates in an aqueous medium were measured at various salinities and temperatures using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM-measured adhesion force decreases with increasing salinity or temperature. Trends of mean measured adhesion forces with temperature and salinity were compared with the DLVO and XDLVO theories. DLVO theory captured the trend with temperature via the impact of temperature on electric double layer interactions, whereas XDLVO theory captured the observed trend with salinity via the impact of salinity on the repulsive hydration force. Our results highlight the significance of hydration force in accurately predicting the fate of fines in porous media.

Quantitative analysis of intermolecular forces in cellulose microfibrils and hemicellulose with AFM nano-colloidal probes

Yi Kong,Xingyu Lan,Weixiong Zhang,Shao-Yuan Leu,Chuanshuang Hu,Ying Wang,Shiyu Fu

It is an interesting research topic to study the interfacial interactions between hemicellulose and cellulose, specifically how hemicellulose's structure affects its binding to cellulose nanofibers. Our research proposes that dispersion interaction play an important role in this interfacial interaction, more so than electrostatic forces when considering the adherence of cellulose to xylan. To quantify these interactions, the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) colloidal probe technique is applied to measure the intermolecular forces between cellulose nanofibers, which are attached to the probe and xylan. These measured forces are then analyzed in relation to the length, diameter and functional groups of the nanocellulose, as well as the molecular weight and side chains of the xylan. Moreover, the predominance of dispersion forces by contrasting the adhesive forces before and after the grafting of a large nonpolar group onto xylan. This modification significantly reduces contact between the cellulose and xylan backbone, thereby markedly diminishing the dispersion interactions. Parallel to the AFM experiments, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations corroborate the experimental results and support our hypotheses. Collectively, these findings contribute to a deeper understanding of polysaccharide interactions within lignocellulose.

Exploring the Role of LiI Additive in Regulating the Morphology of Lithium Deposition by In Situ AFM

Wei-Wei Wang,Yu Gu,Chen-Xi Liu,Jiawei Yan,Bing-Wei Mao

The morphology of Li deposition has a profound effect on the cycling performance of a Li-metal battery. However, in situ research studies on the targeted regulation of Li deposition behavior and exploration of the thermodynamic and kinetic factors affecting Li deposition morphology are quite limited. Herein, we employ in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the effects of lithium iodide (LiI) additive on the evolution of Li deposition morphology in propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolyte. The spherical Li deposits formed via three-dimensional (3D) nucleation and growth partially transform into planar morphology after the addition of 10 mM LiI, leading to a combined 3D nucleation and quasi-two-dimensional (2D) growth behavior. Complemented by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) profiling analysis and AFM nanomechanical characterization, the composition, structure, and properties of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) are comprehensively inspected. The SEI formed in the LiI-containing electrolyte bears an inorganic–organic hybrid structure with improved mechanical flexibility, compared with the rigid and thick SEI formed in the basic electrolyte. Meanwhile, the possible interfacial adsorption of Ĩ– contributes to the uniform distribution of Li+ and rapid diffusion of the Li atom. This work reveals the importance of an additive in regulating the Li deposition behavior, which is helpful in improving the Li-metal battery performance.

Interaction force between coal and Na-, K- and Ca- montmorillonite 001 surfaces in aqueous solutions

Hongliang Li,Hua Han,Yue Wang,Xianshu Dong,Hongli Yang,Minqiang Fan,Yang Hu,Zeyu Feng

In coal beneficiation, the clean coal would be easily contaminated with the super fine montmorillonite particles coating on it. This interaction between coal (hydrophobic) and montmorillonite (hydrophilic) surfaces is the interactions between the asymmetric systems. Previous studies detected the force between the montmorillonite and graphite or between the montmorillonite mounted tip and coal substrate to represent the interactions between 001 surface and coal. However, there is still lack of experimental direct measurement on the interaction between montmorillonite 001 surface and coal macerals. In this study, proposes methods for determinine the interactions between coal macerals and 001 surface of Na-, K- and Ca- montmorillonite directly by using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The results indicate that the 001 surface of Na- and Ca- montmorillonite served as the chaotropic and kosmotropic surface when it is adjacent to coal surfaces, with an attractive force and repulsive force occurring between them, respectively. The 001 surface of K-montmorillonite served as the chaotropic surface and kosmotropic surface while it is close to liptinite and inertinite, respectively. This chaotropic or kosmotropic property of the surface is determined by the coordination number of the cations and wettability of the hydrophobic surface simultaneously.

AFM Studies on Liquid Superlubricity between Silica Surfaces Achieved with Surfactant Micelles

Jinjin Li,Chenhui Zhang,Peng Cheng,Xinchun Chen,Weiqi Wang,Jianbin Luo

By using atomic force microscopy (AFM), we showed that the liquid superlubricity with a superlow friction coefficient of 0.0007 can be achieved between two silica surfaces lubricated by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) solution. There exists a critical load that the lubrication state translates from superlow friction to high friction reversibly. To analyze the superlow friction mechanism and the factors influencing the critical load, we used AFM to measure the structure of adsorbed C16TAB molecules and the normal force between two silica surfaces. Experimental results indicate that the C16TAB molecules are firmly adsorbed on the two silica surfaces by electrostatic interaction, forming cylinder-like micelles. Meanwhile, the positively charged headgroups exposed to solution produce the hydration and double layer repulsion to bear the applied load. By controlling the concentration of C16TAB solution, it is confirmed that the critical load of superlow friction is determined by the maximal normal force produced by the hydration layer. Finally, the superlow friction mechanism was proposed that the adsorbed micellar layer forms the hydration layer, making the two friction surfaces be in the repulsive region and meanwhile providing excellent fluidity without adhesion between micelles.

Crystallization of Polymer Chains Chemically Attached on a Surface: Lamellar Orientation from Flat-on to Edge-on

Yihuang Chen,Tiansheng Gan,Chunfeng Ma,Linge Wang,Guangzhao Zhang

Crystallization of polymer chains confined on a surface greatly influences surface properties. We have grafted comb-like copolymer, consisting of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) backbone and semicrystalline poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) side chains, on silicon surface and investigated the crystallization of such confined PCL chains upon solvent evaporation by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GI-WAXS), and polarized optical microscope (POM). Our studies reveal that the PCL chains align and form “flat-on” lamellae at a low PCL chain density. As the chain density increases, the comb-like polymer (PHEMA-g-PCL) chains undergo pancake-to-mushroom-to-brush transition, and the lamellae turn from “flat-on” to “edge-on” in orientation. Further increasing PCL chain density leads the “edge-on” lamellae to change from a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) to quasi-three-dimensional (quasi-3D). Because of the confinements of polymer chains, we can observe the evolution of spherulites at different stages during the mushroom-to-brush transition of PHEMA-g-PCL chains. The confinements also result in knobbly substructures in the edge-on lamellae.

A novel assessment method for the catalytic activity of ionic liquid degradation of PET

Ruiqi Zhang,Panpan Hao,Xiujie Cheng,Rana R. Neiber,Ling Wang,Yi Li,Junli Xu,Dongxia Yan,Qing Zhou,Jiayu Xin,Xingmei Lu

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been recognized as environmentally friendly and effective catalysts for poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) glycolysis. However, further investigation is required to gain a deeper understanding of the depolymerization mechanism. In this study, a series of experiments are conducted to investigate the impact of metallic and non-metallic ILs, containing diverse anions, on the interaction with PET surfaces. The findings indicate that the catalytic efficiency of IL is strongly correlated to the intensity of the interaction with PET. When the interface adhesion strength is more than twice that of PET/PET, the IL exhibits efficient catalytic properties in PET glycolysis. Therefore, an innovative approach involving the use of AFM for efficiently assessing highly effective IL catalysts is proposed. In addition, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform-infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate the predominant interaction mechanism between ILs and PET. This research provides guiding significance for understanding the mechanism of PET glycolysis.

Probing spatial variation in AFM-measured adhesion: Implication of distributed nanoscale charge heterogeneity

Yulong Yang,Weifeng Yuan,William Johnson,Eddy Pazmino,Lu Yuan,Zhenjiang You

Nanoscale charge heterogeneity is often invoked to explain colloid attachment to grain surfaces in the presence of repulsive energy barriers, yet characterizing its direct impact on the detected spatial variation of colloid-surface interactions through spectroscopy remains unexplored. To gain deeper insights into how intrinsic charge heterogeneity impacts colloid-surface adhesion forces, we measured the spatial distribution of adhesion forces between carboxylated polystyrene latex microspheres and hydrophilic silica substrates in an aqueous solution across different NaCl concentrations (SC) using colloid-probe atomic force microscope (AFM). Trends of mean measured adhesion force with SC were compared to predictions from DLVO and extended DLVO (xDLVO) theories. The xDLVO framework successfully captured the observed trend with NaCl concentration via the impact of NaCl concentration on the repulsive hydration force. Incorporating nanoscale charge heterogeneity into colloid-surface interaction simulations reproduced the experimentally-observed variation around the mean, highlighting the prominent contribution of charge heterogeneity to observed spatial variation of adhesion forces.

Ultrasound enhanced the binding ability of chitinase onto chitin: From an AFM insight

Furong Hou,Liang He,Xiaobin Ma,Danli Wang,Tian Ding,Xingqian Ye,Donghong Liu

In order to evaluate the effect of ultrasound to chitinase from a molecular level, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to investigate the interaction force of chitinase binding onto chitin surface. In the measurement of force-distance curve, a series of pull-off events were discovered using the immobilized AFM tips with chitinase either treated by ultrasound or not, whereas no interaction peak was observed by the AFM tips without chitinase, indicating that the obtained adhesion forces were coming from the binding functions between chitinase and chitin. Through the analysis of these force curves, at the loading velocity of 0.3 μm/s, the maximum binding force of the chitinase treated by ultrasound for 20 min onto chitin was measured to be 105.33 ± 23.51 pN, while the untreated onto chitin was 71.05 ± 12.73 pN, suggesting the stronger binding force between ultrasonic treated chitinase and chitin substrate. Therefore, AFM has provided a useful method to directly and quantitatively characterize the interactions between chitinase and chitin, and successfully proved that ultrasound could activate chitinase by enhancing the binding ability of chitinase onto chitin.

Fabrication of Nanopatterns on Silicon Surface by Combining AFM-Based Scratching and RIE Methods

Geng Yanquan,Yan Yongda,Wang Jiqiang,Zhuang Yun

This study presents an atomic force microscope (AFM)-based scratching combined with reactive ion etching (RIE) method to fabricate nanopatterns on the silicon surface. All AFM-based scratching processes are performed on the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) film to create features in order to protect the AFM tip from wearing and enlarge its life time. Two types of resist films are selected for the RIE process. One is only PMMA thin-film resist, and the other one contains two-layer thin-film resist which are PMMA and aluminum thin films. The nanopatterns on the silicon after etching using RIE with these two types of resist film are compared. Results show that when using PMMA film, the width of the nanopattern on silicon is larger than on the PMMA film, and the material pile-ups formed during the scratching process cannot be considered as a resist. On the contrary, the aluminum thin films can improve the quality of the transfer. It indicates that the thin-film resist with bilayers can guarantee the transfer accuracy of the features, which can expand the application of the AFM tip-based scratching technique.

AFM study on the adsorption of Hg2+ on natural molybdenum disulfide in aqueous solutions

Feifei Jia,Xian Zhang,Shaoxian Song

The adsorption of Hg2+ on natural molybdenum disulfide has been studied using atomic force microscope (AFM). The AFM imaging clearly illustrated the adsorption of Hg2+ on the surface of molybdenum disulfide, and also hydration layers on the surfaces. It was found that the presence of a hydration layer on molybdenum disulfide surfaces hindered the Hg2+ adsorption. Also, it was observed that the Hg2+ adsorbed appeared in the form of multilayers. The first adsorbed Hg2+ layer might be mainly attributed to the complexation of Hg2+ with S atoms exposed on molybdenum disulfide surfaces, while the second one might be due to the electrostatic interaction between negatively charged molybdenum disulfide and the cation Hg2+.

Quantification Characterization of Hierarchical Structure of Polyurethane by Advanced AFM and X-ray Techniques

Jiadong Wang,Min Wang,Xi Zhang,Yang Han,Yingxue Wu,Dong Wang,Xuan Qin,Yonglai Lu,Liqun Zhang

Polyurethane (PU) with microphase separation has garnered significant attention due to its highly designable molecular structure and a wide range of adjustable properties. However, there is currently a lack of systematic approaches for quantifying PU’s microphase separation. To address this research gap, we utilized an atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanomechanical mapping technique along with Gaussian fitting to recolor and quantitatively analyze the evolution of PU’s microphase separation. By varying the ratios of the chain extender to cross-linking agent, we observed the changes in the hydrogen bonding between the soft and hard segments. As the ratio of the chain extender to cross-linking agent decreases, the strength of the hydrogen bonding weakens, resulting in a reduction in the quantity and phase percentage of hard segment (HS) domains. Consequently, the degree of microphase separation between the soft and hard segments decreases, leading to specific alterations in the material’s mechanical properties and dynamic viscoelasticity. To further investigate the hierarchical structure of PU, we employed various techniques, such as X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and AFM-based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR). Our findings reveal a spherulite pattern composed of lamellae within the HS domains, with the cross-linking density gradually increasing from the center to the periphery. Overall, our comprehensive characterization of PU provides valuable insights into its hierarchical structure and establishes a quantitative framework to explore the intricate relationship between the structure and properties.
