Study on flame retardancy of APP/PEPA/MoO3 synergism in vinyl ester resins

Gaofeng Zeng,Weiwei Zhang,Xin Zhang,Wenchao Zhang,Jianxin Du,Jiyu He,Rongjie Yang

A range of flame retardant vinyl ester resins (VERs) samples have been produced containing different contents of PEPA (1-oxo-4-hydroxymethyl-2,6,7-trioxa-l-phosphabicyclo[2.2.2]octane), APP (ammonium polyphosphate), and MoO 3 (molybdenum trioxide). By investigating the flame retardancy of VER samples such as limiting oxygen index and UL-94, the synergistic flame retardance of APP, PEPA, and MoO3 has been revealed. The cone calorimeter is an instrument that measures the combustion data of samples. In the VER composites on fire, the synergistic smoke suppression effect of the APP, PEPA, and MoO 3 was detected. The gas and condensed phase of VER composites with APP, PEPA, and MoO 3 were tested by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and FTIR. The char residues of samples have been studied at length by scanning electron microscopy and FTIR. The results show that the presence of MoO3 can promote the formation of P  O and PO structures.

Composite silica aerogel based on HNTs-modified APP with enhanced thermal insulation and flame retardancy performance for organosilicon resin

Ke Wang,Wei Gao

Efficient thermal insulation and flame-retardant materials are crucial in reducing energy consumption and minimizing fire hazards. This work presents a novel method for preparing a composite aerogel: a silane coupling agent was used as a chemical bridge to synthesize a new flame retardant AKH (modified APP with HNTs). AKH was incorporated into the silica sol to fabricate the SA-AKH composite aerogel. SA-AKH features a dense three-dimensional network skeletal structure, excellent thermal stability, and a high specific surface area. When integrated into organosilicon resin, SA-AKH significantly enhances the flame resistance of composite materials. During cone calorimetry testing (CCT), SSAKH4 exhibited a peak heat release rate (PHRR) of 281.88 kW/m 2 and total smoke production (TSP) of 5.52 m 2 , representing a decrease of 30.8 % and 4.5 %, respectively, compared to SSA4. The composite material, derived from the unique mesoporous structure of aerogel combined with the flame retardant and hollow characterization of AKH, demonstrates exceptional flame retardancy and smoke suppression. SA-AKH is expected to make novel advancements in the field of high-efficiency insulation and flame-resistant composites.

Organic-inorganic hybrid functionalized chitosan/ammonium polyphosphate (APP): A synergistic strategy for flame-retardant and high-mechanical-strength epoxy thermosets

Yunfan Li,Zhiwang Yang,Jie Guan,Qibin Yan,Ziqiang Lei

Epoxy resin (EP) is an industrially essential polymer widely used in electronic packaging, adhesives, and construction. Despite its utility, the high flammability of EP poses a significant safety risk. In this study, a novel chitosan-derived organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardant (CPMM) was synthesized, which was then combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and added to epoxy resin (EP) to produce high-performance flame-retardant epoxy thermosets. Samples containing 7.5 wt% CPMM and 7.5 wt% APP reached a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 30.5 % and a V-0 rating, along with a marked decrease in peak heat release rate from 1447.0 kW/m 2 to 267.1 kW/m 2 compared to pure EP. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the synergistic effect of CPMM and APP promotes the formation of more complete intumescent char structures, thereby enhancing the flame-retardant properties of the epoxy thermosets. Furthermore, mechanical performance tests showed improvements in both tensile and flexural strengths due to the robust interaction between CPMM and the matrix. This study provides a promising strategy for the design of bio-based organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardants and epoxy thermosets with enhanced performance.

A novel organic-inorganic hybrid K-HBPE@APP performing excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression for polypropylene

Naien Zhang,Jie Zhang,Hong Yan,Xiaorong Guo,Qiang Sun,Ruijie Guo

To overcome the flammability and severe dripping of polypropylene (PP), a novel organic-inorganic hybrid K-HBPE@APP (microencapsulated APP by a hyperbranched polyester (HBPE) via silane coupling agent (KH-550)) was obtained and used as a high-efficient flame retardant and smoke suppressant. Herein, HBPE acted as the charring agent for APP. 20 wt% of K-HBPE@APP imparted PP excellent flame retardancy, V-0 rating (UL-94 test) and 82.6% decrease in the peak of heat release rate (PHRR). However, PP with 25 wt% of mechanically mixed APP and HBPE achieved V-1 rating (UL-94 test) and 77.3% decrease in PHRR. That is because the direct contact and sufficient interaction between APP and HBPE gives full play to their synergy. Besides, K-HBPE@APP accelerated the formation of cross-linked P O C/Si O Si/ Si O C/Si O P/P O Φ structures, leading to a strong and compact char layer with a result of dramatic reduction in heat release rate and smoke production. Furthermore, K-HBPE@APP was highly water-resistant and has good compatibility with PP matrix. In particular, the flame-retarded PP had similar tensile strength to pure PP and enhanced impact strength.

Fabrication and properties of PEI/APP layer-by-layer coated ramie fabric combined with low-temperature plasma treatment

Huaqing Wang,Hongqiang Yan,Zhengping Fang

Summary The present work demonstrates a surface pretreatment of reducing assembly layers for flame retardant modification of ramie fabric used by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. In order to achieve this goal, low-temperature plasma (LTP) pretreatment was chosen. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to confirm the effect of LTP pretreatment on polyethylenimine/ammonium polyphosphate (PEI/APP) flame retardant coating constructed on the surface of ramie fabric using LbL assembly. The thermal property and flame retardancy of PEI/APP coated ramie fabrics were analyzed by TG, LOI, UL94 vertical burning, and cone calorimeter tests. The results indicated that the decomposition rate of ramie fabrics was reduced and the char forming ability at high temperature was improved by PEI/APP coating on the ramie surface. Its LOI increased markedly to 30.6% and ramie fabric achieved self-extinguishing effect. Meanwhile, LTP-O 2 -(PEI/APP) 20 ramie fabric exhibited the low flammability and high fire safety. It was proved that LTP pretreatment under oxygen atmosphere could endow ramie fabric with better flame retardancy due to more PEI/APP adsorbed on its surface. These findings have significant implications for the application of LTP pretreatment to flame retardant modification of ramie fabric by LbL assembly.

KDM6B knockdown alleviates sleep deprivation-induced cerebrovascular lesions in APP/PS1 mice by inhibiting PARP16 expression

Wenkai Yu,Xinyu Li,Chan Zhang,Pengpeng Niu,Jinghao Wu,Wenjun He,Kai Gao,Yuming Xu,Yusheng Li

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a neurological disorder in the elderly, involving the deposition of vascular amyloid-β (Aβ). Sleep deprivation (SD) causes memory deficits during CAA. Lysine specific demethylase 6B (KDM6B) is a histone H3 lysine 27-specific demethylase associated with neuronal injury and inflammation. However, the role of KDM6B in CAA has yet to be studied. In the current study, the multi-platform over-water method was used to induce chronic SD in APP/PS1 mice. Pathological analysis revealed that SD exacerbated vascular lesions in this model, as manifested by extensive formation of Aβ-positive deposits. In addition, SD led to a significant increase in the expression of KDM6B in the cerebral cortex of APP/PS1 mice. Next, the effect of KDM6B on CAA progression was explored through loss of function. Further experiments illustrated that KDM6B knockdown diminished SD-induced memory impairment, neuronal injury and vascular lesions in vivo . Additionally, isolated primary cortical neurons were treated with 10 µM Aβ 1-42 for 48 h to induce the cell model. As expected, knockdown of KDM6B inhibited the Aβ 1-42 -induced cytotoxicity in primary neurons. Mechanistically, our results demonstrated that KDM6B knockdown downregulated poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase16 (PARP16) expression by increasing trimethylated lysine 27 on histone 3 (H3K27me3) levels, indicating that KDM6B epigenetically regulated PARP16 expression. Function recovery experiment results further proved that PARP16 overexpression negated the effect of KDM6B knockdown on Aβ 1-42 -induced cytotoxicity. Overall, our findings uncover an unanticipated role of KDM6B in CAA, and KDM6B may serve as a potential therapeutic target for CAA. Abbreviations: CAA, cerebral amyloid angiopathy; Aβ, amyloid-β; SD, sleep deprivation; KDM6B, lysine specific demethylase 6B; AD, Alzheimer’s disease; H3K27me3, trimethylated lysine 27 on histone 3; PARP16, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase16; AAV2, adeno-associated virus 2; CHIP, chromatin immunoprecipitation; ANOVA, one-way analysis of variance.

Agomelatine Prevents Amyloid Plaque Deposition, Tau Phosphorylation, and Neuroinflammation in APP/PS1 Mice

Yang Xiao-bo,Zu Heng-bing,Zhao Yong-fei,Yao Kai

Agomelatine, an agonist of melatonergic MT1 and MT2 receptors and a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine 2C receptor antagonist, is widely applied in treating depression and insomnia symptoms in several neurogenerative diseases. However, the neuroprotective effect of agomelatine in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is less known. In this study, a total of 30 mice were randomly divided into three groups, namely, wild type (WT), APP/PS1, and agomelatine (50 mg/kg). After 30 days, the Morris water maze was performed to test the cognitive ability of mice. Then, all mice were sacrificed, and the hippocampus tissues were collected for ELISA, Western blot, and immunofluorescence analysis. In this study, we found that agomelatine attenuated spatial memory deficit, amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition, tau phosphorylation, and neuroinflammation in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice. Further study demonstrated that agomelatine treatment upregulated the protein expression of DHCR24 and downregulated P-Akt, P-mTOR, p-p70s6k, Hes1, and Notch1 expression. In summary, our results identified that agomelatine could improve cognitive impairment and ameliorate AD-like pathology in APP/PS1 mice via activating DHCR24 signaling and inhibiting Akt/mTOR and Hes1/Notch1 signaling pathway. Agomelatine may become a promising drug candidate in the therapy of AD.

ELAVL1 interacts with APP and promotes Aβ-induced apoptosis in Alzheimer's disease by activating Bcl-2/Bax signaling

Jun Fu,Chengjie Ding,Wenqing Li,Jiali Lei,He Wang,Lingfei Meng,Xiaoya Lin,Weiyuan Chen,Hongchang Gao

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline, with hallmark pathological features including Aβ deposition and tau protein hyperphosphorylation. These pathological alterations are particularly prominent in the Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) and exert profound effects on cognitive function. The present study aimed to reveal key proteins in the PFC and provide insight into their potential mechanisms of action in AD. Accordingly, proteomic analysis was conducted to profile differential proteins in 5 × FAD mice, followed by in vivo and in vitro validation of core proteins through AAV-mediated interference of target gene expression. Furthermore, transcriptomics and molecular biology techniques were employed to confirm the underlying mechanisms of action of core proteins in AD. The results demonstrated that ELAVL1 was significantly upregulated in the PFC of AD mice. Behavioral experiments revealed that inhibition of ELAVL1 expression markedly improved long-term memory in AD mice. Immunostaining and Western blot analyses confirmed that suppressing ELAVL1 expression alleviated Aβ1–42 deposition and apoptosis. In vitro experiments indicated that knocking down ELAVL1 significantly reduced the apoptotic response of SH-SY5Y cells induced by Aβ1–42 and APP/Swe cells. Transcriptomic analysis further revealed that ELAVL1 regulates Aβ1–42-induced apoptosis via activation of the Bcl-2/Bax pathway. Notably, immunofluorescence co-localization staining and pull-down assays confirmed that ELAVL1 directly interacts with APP. Collectively, these findings provide valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying AD and suggest ELAVL1 as a promising therapeutic target for AD.

A core–shell-structured APP@COFs hybrid for enhanced flame retardancy and mechanical property of epoxy resin (EP)

Bi Xue,Di Hang,Liu Jia,Meng Yafang,Song Yuying,Meng Weihua,Qu Hongqiang,Fang Lide,Song Pingan,Xu Jianzhong

Epoxy resin (EP) is a commercially important resin with many important industrial applications but is impeded by its inherent flammability. Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) represents an eco-friendly and effective fire retardant for EP, but its moisture sensitivity and poor interfacial compatibility with EP often give rise to unsatisfactory fire retardance and adverse impacts on mechanical properties of EP. To address these issues, we herein report a core–shell-structured modified APP, APP@COFs, using Schiff base covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as a surface modifier. The results show that the addition of 2 parts per hundreds of resins (phr) APP@COFs effectively enhances the flame retardancy of EP, leading to a self-extinguishing capability and a limiting oxygen index of 27.1%. Compared with virgin EP, the peak heat release rate is decreased by 54.7% due to the modes of action of APP@COFs in both gas and condensed phases. Additionally, because of improved interfacial compatibility, the resulting EP/APP@COFs composites show improved mechanical properties, e.g., a 37% increase in the impact toughness of EP/2 phr APP@COFs relative to that of EP. This work provides an effective method for modifying APP and the development of advanced fire-retardant EP materials for practical applications in industries. Graphical abstract A core–shell-structured fire retardant has been developed for creating fire-retardant epoxy resin composites with improved mechanical properties.

Investigation of MXene@APP/FDS/AgNPs@EG system for preparing multifunctional thermoplastic polyurethane composites with flame retardancy and electromagnetic shielding performance

Minghao Li,Chunhui Chen,Wenqing Hai,Ziyang Jiang,Qian Meng,Enquan Hao,Hongjie Li,Huiqi Shao,Guangwei Shao,Jinhua Jiang,Nanliang Chen,Siyi Bi

In order to comply with the requirement of flame retardancy and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding for encapsulant applied to electronic devices, multifunctional thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites are prepared with the construction of an intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system comprising internal conductive network. In this work, ammonium polyphosphate wrapped with MXene (MXene@APP) is attained by microencapsulation, and expandible graphite decorated with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs@EG) is prepared by the reducibility of silk sericin. The IFR system with conductivity is established by the introduction of MXene@APP, AgNPs@EG and furfural-derived Schiff base (FDS). The as-prepared TPU/MXene@APP/FDS/AgNPs@EG composites are able to attain significant elevation in flame retardancy, exhibiting V-0 rating and a LOI value of 33.1 %. Furthermore, TPU composites are integrated with warp-knitted metal mesh (WMM) to fabricate TPU@WMM coated fabric, displaying strengthened electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of 37.53 dB within X band. This work provides a potential method for application in encapsulant with flame retardancy and electromagnetic protection.

Integrated untargeted and targeted metabolomics to reveal therapeutic effect and mechanism of Alpiniae oxyphyllae fructus on Alzheimer’s disease in APP/PS1 mice

Zhou Shengnan,Liu Liwei,Zhang Yuanyuan,Zhang Zhibo,Li Hanbing,Fan Feng,He Jiuming,Kang Jian,Zuo Lihua

Introduction: Alpiniae oxyphyllae Fructus (AOF) has been abundantly utilized for the treatment of diarrhea, dyspepsia, kidney asthenia, and abdominal pain in China. AOF is effective for treating AD in clinical trials, but its exact mode of action is yet unknown. Methods: In this study, metabolomics was combined to ascertain the alterations in plasma metabolism in APP/PS1 transgenic mice, the therapy of AOF on model mice, and the dynamic variations in 15 bile acids (BAs) concentration. Results: 31 differential biomarkers were finally identified in APP/PS1 group vs. the WT group. The levels of 16 metabolites like sphinganine (Sa), lyso PE (20:2), lysoPC (17:0), glycocholic acid (GCA), deoxycholicacid (DCA) were increased in APP/PS1 group, and those of 15 metabolites like phytosphingosine, cer (d18:0/14:0), and fumaric acid were reduced in APP/PS1 group. After AOF treatment, 29 of the 31 differential metabolites showed a tendency to be back-regulated, and 15 metabolites were significantly back-regulated, including sphinganine (Sa), lyso PE (20:2), glycocholic acid (GCA), deoxycholic acid (DCA). The relationship between BAs level and AD had been received increasing attention in recent years, and we also found notable differences between DCA and GCA in different groups. Therefore, a BAs-targeted metabonomic way was established to determine the level of 15 bile acids in different groups. The consequence demonstrated that primary BAs (CA, CDCA) declined in APP/PS1 model mice. After 3 months of AOF administration, CA and CDCA levels showed an upward trend. Conjugated primary bile acids (TCA, GCA, TCDCA, GCDCA), and secondary bile acids (DCA, LCA, GDCA, TDCA, TLCA GLCA) ascended in APP/PS1 group. After 3 months of AOF treatment, the levels of most BAs decreased to varying degrees. Notably, the metabolic performance of DCA and GCA in different groups was consistent with the predictions of untargeted metabolomics, validating the correctness of untargeted metabolomics.Discussion: According to metabolic pathways of regulated metabolites, it was prompted that AOF ameliorated the symptom of AD mice probably by regulating bile acids metabolism. This study offers a solid foundation for further research into the AOF mechanism for the therapy of AD.

Ginsenoside Ro ameliorates cognitive impairment and neuroinflammation in APP/PS1 mice via the IBA1/GFAP-MAPK signaling pathway

Tianyao Li,Jiaxin Chen,Zhouyuan Xie,Jiansong Fang,Qiqing Wu,Xinyue Cao,Ziying Chen,Yiyun Wang,Qiqi Fan,Qi Wang,Jinman Liu

Introduction Ginseng, known as the “king of herbs,” has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine due to its beneficial properties, including anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects. Ginsenosides, the active compounds in ginseng, have shown promise in treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This study investigates the therapeutic potential of Ginsenoside Ro and its underlying mechanisms in AD treatment. Methods In this study, male APP/PS1 transgenic mice were divided into five groups and treated with Ginsenoside Ro or ginseng for one month. Cognitive function and anxiety were assessed through behavioral tests, including the open field test (OFT) and Morris water maze (MWM). To evaluate Aβ deposition, neuronal apoptosis, neuroinflammation, and the MAPK pathway, various techniques were employed: Thioflavin-T staining, Nissl staining, immunofluorescence, Western blot, and qRT-PCR analyses. Results Ginsenoside Ro significantly improved cognitive function and reduced anxiety in APP/PS1 mice. It also decreased Aβ deposition and ameliorated neuronal apoptosis in the cerebral cortex. The treatment regulated the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins (Bax and Caspase3) and increased the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. Additionally, Ginsenoside Ro reduced neuroinflammation by decreasing IBA1-positive microglia and GFAP-positive astrocytes and lowering pro-inflammatory cytokines while enhancing anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Furthermore, the phosphorylation levels of p38 and JNK in the MAPK pathway were significantly reduced, suggesting a key mechanism for its therapeutic effects. Discussion These findings provide strong evidence supporting Ginsenoside Ro as a potential therapeutic agent for Alzheimer’s disease. Its effects appear to be mediated through the modulation of the IBA1/GFAP-MAPK pathway, which may offer new insights into AD treatment strategies.
