Enhancing cadmium immobilization by AQDS-mediated dissimilatory reduction under coexisting conditions of iron and manganese oxides

Gongting Wang,Zedong Teng,Ziyi Wei,Xin Zhao,Wenqing Luo,Yuxin Cheng,Yali Guo,Xiaonan Ji,Wei Hu,Min Li

The serious contamination of cadmium (Cd) in sediments has become an urgent environmental problem. Quinones mediated dissimilatory iron and manganese reduction widely occurs in sediments, this process may enhance Cd immobilization by promoting production of secondary minerals. Nevertheless, the enhancing effect of Cd immobilization is still poorly understood. Here, 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid (AQDS) was used to facilitate the microbial reduction of iron and manganese oxides by Geobacter metallireducens GS-15, and its effects on Cd species was investigated. Compared to goethite (FeOOH), microorganisms preferentially reduced birnessite (MnO 2 ) due to more dramatic interfacial electron transfer between birnessite and AQDS. AQDS thus significantly enhanced microbial reduction of iron and manganese coexisted minerals as well as Cd 2+ immobilization. After 80 days, an impressive 83% of reducible-Cd appeared in the FeOOH–MnO 2 -AQDS group, demonstrating the most effective Cd immobilization. Furthermore, XANES results suggested that AQDS promoted the increase of vivianite-Cd in secondary minerals in MnO 2 -AQDS and FeOOH–MnO 2 -AQDS groups. Based on the structural equation model, HCl-extracted Fe(II) indirectly affected the increase of reducible-Cd mainly through vivianite-Cd. The AQDS enhancement on microbial reduction of iron and manganese oxides promotes the recrystallization of secondary minerals and the immobilization of Cd, offering a promising strategy for the remediation of Cd-contaminated sediments.

The humic substance analogue antraquinone-2, 6-disulfonate (AQDS) enhanced zero-valent iron based autotrophic denitrification: Performances and mechanisms

Jiaohui Xia,Yan Li,Xinbai Jiang,Dan Chen,Jinyou Shen

Zero-valent iron based autotrophic denitrification (ZVI-AD) has attracted increasing attentions in nitrate removal due to saving organic carbon budget in wastewater treatment , but limited by the low reaction speed, poor electron transfer efficiency as well as the compaction/blocking by iron hydrolysis products. Humic substances (HS) were promising to regulate iron cycle and accelerate electron transfer by serving as electron mediators. In this study, HS analogue, antraquinone-2, 6-disulfonate (AQDS), was added to enhance ZVI-AD process. Results showed that the dosage of AQDS led to a NO 3 − -N removal efficiency of 83.37 ± 3.98% within 96 h, which was 32.28 ± 1.25% higher than that in ZVI-AD system. The corrosion of ZVI and microbially nitrate reduction were both improved at the presence of AQDS. The addition of AQDS enriched the functional species, including autotrophic denitrobacteria namely Thauera and Hydrogenophaga , iron redox-related species namely Ferruginibacter and HS respiration related species namely Flavobacterium . The genes napA and napB related to electron transfer, nirK and nosZ related to the accumulation of intermediate products were also enriched by the addition of AQDS. AQDS addition boosted the electrons flowing to both abiotic and biotic nitrate reduction. Nitrate removal mechanism involved in ZVI-AQDS coupled system was proposed. This study provided an alternative strategy for improving ZVI-AD by HS.

AQDS-guided growth of nanocilia-like polyaniline on graphene nanofiber as cathode material for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Yuanyuan Du,Xiaobing Wang,Baoming Li,Haixia Lü,Yu Shen

Reduced graphene oxide nanofiber (rGONF) modified by anthraquinone-1,5-disulfonate (AQDS) (AQDS-rGONF) was prepared by one-step hydrothermal reaction , and nanocilia-like polyaniline (PANI) grew uniformly on the surface of rGONF under the guidance of AQDS as a starting point of polymerization to fabricate successfully PANI/AQDS-rGONF composite. The results showed that PANI/AQDS-rGONF composite had a larger specific capacitance of 511 F/g than PANI/rGONF composite of 360 F/g or PANI of 312 F/g at a current density of 8 mA/cm 2 , and a greater electrochemical stability with the specific capacitance retention of 82.4% than PANI/rGONF of 63.2% or PANI of 52.2% after 2000 cycles, which were closely related to the synergistic effects of special nanocilia-like structure, large specific surface area, rGONF as a supporting skeleton and AQDS as a “bridge”. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on PANI/AQDS-rGONF composite as cathode was assembled, which exhibited a high energy density of 17.9 Wh/kg at a power density of 907 W/kg.

The combined enhancement of RL, nZVI and AQDS on the microbial anaerobic-aerobic degradation of PAHs in soil

Lianghe Lv,Lina Sun,Chunli Yuan,Yue Han,Zhaohui Huang

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants in soil, which have carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic hazards. The effects of rhamnolipid (RL), nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid (AQDS) on the degradation of PAHs in soil were studied. It was found that the treatment of 5 mg·kg −1 RL + 1% nZVI +0.2 mmol·kg −1 AQDS had the highest degradation rate. The degradation rate of total PAHs and HMW-PAHs was 72.81% and 79.47% respectively after 90 days. High-throughput sequencing showed that in RL + nZVI + AQDS enhanced soil, Clostridium , Geobacter , Anaeromyxobacter and Sphingomonas were the dominant species for anaerobic degradation of PAHs. Rhodococcus , Nocardioides , and Microvirga are the dominant species for aerobic degradation of PAHs. The activities of methyltransferase, dehydrogenase and catechol 1,2-dioxygenase in the anaerobic-aerobic degradation process of PAHs were consistent with the degradation process of PAHs, indicating the role of these enzymes in the degradation of PAHs. RL, nZVI, and AQDS combined enhanced microbial anaerobic-aerobic degradation has great application potential in remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

Simultaneous removal of nitrogen, Cu2+, and bisphenol A in a hydrogel-biochar-AQDS immobilized bioreactor with added bicarbonate: Performance and metagenomic insights

Yu Liu,Xue Li,Junfeng Su,Yihan Bai,Yue Wang,Xuan Li

As the complexity of industrial wastewater pollution continues to increase, the simultaneous removal of nitrogen, metal contaminants, and persistent organic pollutants under low carbon conditions has become a key challenge for biological treatment systems. To address the operational instability and dependence on carbon sources observed in immobilized systems when exposed to copper (Cu 2+ ) and bisphenol A (BPA), the Pseudoalteromonas japonicus strain LY0623 was integrated into a hydrogel-biochar-AQDS composite carrier to construct a multifunctional immobilized biofilm system. Notably, under conditions containing only NaHCO 3 , the R4 system achieved an NH 4 + -N removal rate of 89%. Under conditions where Cu 2+ and BPA coexist, the R4 system achieved removal of NH 4 + -N (89%), NO 3 - -N (100%), Cu 2+ (85%), and BPA (88%). Sediment characterization confirmed that Cu 2+ was immobilized through adsorption, complexation, and microbiologically induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). Metagenomic analysis further indicated that the Pseudomonadota phylum remained the dominant phylum, while functional pathways associated with inorganic carbon assimilation, HNAD nitrogen metabolism, endogenous carbon transformation, biomineralization, electron transfer, and aromatic compound degradation were preserved. By combining ammonia oxidation driven energy production, inorganic carbon utilization, redox mediated processes, and biomineralization, this study provides a highly promising low carbon strategy for treating industrial wastewater containing mixed pollutants.
