Rational intramolecular and interface design of cellulosic paper electrode via PEDOT with AQS as dopant and electrolyte additives

Shuaishuai Yang,Lijian Sun

Cellulose fibers(CFs)-based electrode materials are of considerable interest for future wearable electronic devices due to excellent flexibility and strength, and hydrophilicity. The effective introduction of electrode materials into CFs is essential for flexible supercapaciotors(SCs). A tunable electrochemical performance of conductive polymers for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT) has been aroused great interests. Herein, we design its electrochemical process via sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate(AQS) as dopant and electrolyte additive to construct active electrode interior and interface. As a result, the PEDOT@CFs electrode exhibits great increase of doping level from 0.16 to 0.29, conductivity from 353.46 to 626.15 S m −1 , and specific capacitance from 140.22 to 1211.57 F g −1 at a current density of 0.2 A g −1 . Furthermore, the PEDOT:AQS@CFs electrode possess excellent cyclic stability (96.01 %) after 1000 cycles. The work reveals the mechanism of AQS as dopant and electrolyte additive, and provides a new perspective for application of PEDOT in energy storage field.

PPy/AQS (9, 10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid) and PPy/ARS (Alizarin Red's) modified stainless steel mesh as cathode membrane in an integrated MBR/MFC system

Yaojie Li,Lifen Liu,Jiadong Liu,Fenglin Yang,Nanqi Ren

To increase effluent quality and membrane flux , membrane bioreactor was integrated with microbial fuel cell (MBR/MFC), in which functional cathode membranes could enable fouling reduction and even electro-catalytic pollutant degradation using the bio-generated electricity. Modifying stainless steel mesh (SSM) with only polypyrrole (PPy) or cheap ARS (Alizarin Red's) or expensive AQS (9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid) doped PPy film, helped obtain high ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) activity and higher power output in the integrated MBR/MFC system. The ARS and PPy modified cathode membranes, could not only increase the degradation of (MB) methylene blue (>   90%, 1   h), but also enable higher antifouling property in filtrations. Most importantly, replacing the blank SSM, the use of PPy/AQS, PPy/ARS and PPy modified SSM, increased power density 31.37, 27.06 and 23.7 times respectively in the integrated MBR/MFC system. The new system has great application potential and economic feasibility in effective removal of COD and NH 4 + -N nutrients, has better effluent qualities and has higher energy recovery.

Chromate Interaction with the Chromate Reducing Actinobacterium Intrasporangium chromatireducens Q5-1

Hongliang Liu,Jun Huang,Shengzhe Zhang,Biao Xu,Gejiao Wang

This study was conducted to determine the microbe-chromate [Cr(VI)] interaction and the effect of quinoid analogue anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) on aerobic Cr(VI) reduction by Intrasporangium chromatireducens Q5-1. The addition of redox mediator AQS, which might expedite the electron transfer, promoted Cr(VI) bioreduction. Addition of carbon sources, such as maltose, acetate, sucrose and lactose stimulated the AQS-promoted Cr(VI) reduction of strain Q5-1. Induction experiment clarified that the enzyme involves in the Cr(VI) reduction is constitutive. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) spectra showed the existence of trace Cr distributed on the cell surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the Cr(III) complex was bound to the cell surface (0.87%, atomic percent). The spectra shifts detected by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that Cr(III) was bound to the carbonyl and amide groups. In addition, Cr(VI) reduction by different cell fractions showed that Cr(VI) reduction was occurred extracellularly rather than intracellularly. The results disclosed that Cr(VI) detoxification of strain Q5-1 was mainly associated with extracellular Cr(VI) reduction process in combination with trace Cr(III) adsorption on the cell surface. A schematic figure depicting the interactions between strain Q5-1 and Cr(VI) was presented. This study enhanced the understanding of the microbe-Cr(VI) interaction mechanism and revealed the AQS-promoted aerobic Cr(VI) reduction of strain Q5-1. Such strain and quinoid analogue-mediated bacterial Cr(VI) reduction may facilitate the bioremediation for Cr(VI)-polluted environment.

Conductive PPy@cellulosic Paper Hybrid Electrodes with a Redox Active Dopant for High Capacitance and Cycling Stability

Shuaishuai Yang,Xueren Qian

Polypyrrole@cellulose fibers (PPy@CFs) electrode materials are promising candidates in the energy storage. Various strategies have been pursued to improve their electrochemical performance. However, the poor conductivity, specific capacitance, and cyclic stability still hindered its application. Compared with the previous studies, we selected AQS with electrochemical activity as a dopant to improve these defects. It exhibits a high capacitance of 829.8 F g−1at a current density of 0.2 A g−1, which is much higher than that of PPy@CFs electrode material (261.9 F g−1). Moreover, the capacitance retention of PPy:AQS/p-PTSA@CFs reaches up to 96.01% after 1000 cycles, indicating superior cyclic stability. Therefore, this work provides an efficient strategy for constructing high-performance electrode materials for energy storage. Keywords:CFs;PPy;AQS;doping effect;electrochemical performance

A novel strategy for enhancing electron transfer by adding BC/AQS in the anaerobic digestion of agriculture waste: Focusing on the interaction between quinone/C=O and microbes

Yulei Zhang,Zonglu Yao,Junyi Ma,Jiadong Yu,Ping Ai,Ruixia Shen,Yi Liang,Lixin Zhao

Low interspecies electron transfer efficiency among microorganisms is a critical factor limiting anaerobic digestion performance. In this study, conductive and stable biochar (BC) was combined with redox-active anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) to enhance electron transfer efficiency through their synergistic effects, thereby improving the efficiency of anaerobic digestion. Results showed that cumulative methane production (CMP) reached 176.34 mL/g VS under optimal conditions, including an AQS impregnation concentration of 1 mmol/L, a BC/AQS addition of 5 %, and a total solid (TS) content of 10 %. The addition of BC/AQS enriched Proteiniphilum and Methanobacterium , which shifted the methanogenic pathway from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic, significantly improving volatile fatty acid conversion and total organic carbon degradation. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and changes in key enzyme-encoding genes indicated that BC/AQS enhances the synergistic interaction between Proteiniphilum and Methanobacterium through the redox activity of quinone/C=O functional groups, which may play a key role in the formation of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). This study provides a promising strategy to enhance microbial electron transfer mechanisms in anaerobic digestion by leveraging the complementary properties of meso-materials, offering new insights into the utilization of agricultural waste for energy production.
