A nano-ZnO semiconductor material loaded with mineral attapulgite (ATP) photocatalyst has been investigated. Using ATP as a carrier, a variety of various mixtures of ZnO/ATP composites was synthesized. A scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and UV-Vis spectrophotometer (UV-Vis) were used to examine the morphology, synergistic effects, and photocatalytic properties of ZnO/ATP nanocomposites. The target pollutant for photocatalytic degradation is methylene blue solution. When ATP is mixed with pure ZnO, the degrading performance of composite nanomaterials in methylene blue solution is considerably enhanced. The degree of methylene blue degradation increases as the amount of ATP in the composite grows, and the degradation rate of ZnO/40% ATP can reach 96% in 45 min under solar light illumination. The amount of ATP in the system is excessive, and the adsorption effect is visible. The optimal composite ratio was determined to be ZnO/30% ATP. After discovering the ideal composite ratio and synergy of ZnO/ATP, g-C 3 N 4 was compounded in the aforesaid system, dramatically increasing the composite’s photocatalytic activity. At 45 min, the degradation rate of methylene blue reaches 97%. The absorption range and intensity of ternary composites increased, and the photogenerated electron-hole recombination rate decreases significantly. The reaction rate constant increases from 0.033 to 0.069 min −1 . SEM revealed rod-like attapulgite particles packed with tiny zinc oxide particles and a moderate layered structure of C 3 N 4 . The XRD pattern indicated that C 3 N 4 ’s crystallinity is poor and ZnO’s peak intensity is excessively high, masking the composite material’s distinctive peaks. The degradation rate of g-C 3 N 4 /ZnO/30% ATP to methylene blue was found to be 91.5% after 5 cycles.
The hybrid fillers (Al 2 O 3 –ATP hybrids) composed of two types of inorganic materials—modified alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) and modified attapulgite (ATP)—were principally prepared, following which the epoxy matrix (EP) composites reinforced with Al 2 O 3 –ATP hybrids were synthesized. The mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of fabricated Al 2 O 3 –ATP/EP composites are enhanced by doping Al 2 O 3 –ATP hybrids into EP. The highest impact and flexural strength of EP composites (3 wt% Al 2 O 3 –3 wt% ATP/EP) are improved to 27.88 kJ/m 2 and 157.04 MPa, which are 457.6% and 89.2% higher than those of the pure epoxy resin, respectively. The glass transition temperature of Al 2 O 3 –ATP/EP composites increases by 8.8 °C, compared with pure EP composites and the dielectric constant and dielectric loss can reach 3.19 and 0.0041 at 100 Hz. These excellent mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties, accompanied by dielectric property may expand the practical applications of EP composites in industrial engineering.

The degradation of large flow volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low temperature remains a significant challenge. Photothermal catalytic technology, which integrates the advantages of photocatalysis and thermal catalysis, has the potential to address this challenge. In this work, using attapulgite (ATP) as the substrate, MnCo 2 O 4.5 /ATP composites with various spinel loading amount were prepared via a sol-gel approach. Results demonstrated that the 20 % MnCo 2 O 4.5 /ATP catalyst presented the best catalytic performance at a space velocity of 10,000 mL·g −1 h −1 (500 ppm toluene) under light illumination. The toluene conversion rate and mineralization rate reached 99 % and 81 %, respectively. The surface temperature of MnCo 2 O 4.5 /ATP composite rapidly increased under Xenon lamp irradiation, reaching as high as 301.6 °C. In-situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations were performed to explore the photothermal catalytic reaction mechanism. The effective MnCo 2 O 4.5 /ATP interface facilitated the mobility of lattice oxygen and strengthened the activation of oxygen. The ATP surface with its high surface area and rich hydroxyl groups promoted the adsorption of toluene. The oxygen vacancies enriched on the surface of MnCo 2 O 4.5 intensified the adsorption and activation of oxygen, facilitating the transformation of toluene at the MnCo 2 O 4.5 /ATP interface. Current work offers a new strategy for the efficient catalytic elimination of VOCs by taking advantage of solar energy and minerals.
