Heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of phenanthrene in aqueous solution was investigated using schwertmannite biosynthesized by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans LX5 as a catalyst. The effects of different reaction parameters including catalyst loading, H2O2 concentration, initial solution pH and inorganic anions on the Fenton-like degradation of phenanthrene were studied. Results showed that the biosynthesized schwertmannite had an effective catalytic ability on phenanthrene degradation. The degradation efficiency of phenanthrene was 99.0% within 3–5 h reaction under conditions of H2O2 200 mg L−1, schwertmannite 1 g L−1, phenanthrene 1 mg L−1 and pH 3.0–4.5. The degradation was mainly via a surface mechanism, in which phenanthrene was readily adsorbed on the surface of schwertmannite and then oxidized by ˙OH produced from H2O2 decomposition. The XPS results of schwertmannite before and after Fenton-like degradation of phenanthrene revealed the change of Fe2+/Fe3+ species on the surface of schwertmannite. Moreover, phthalates, octadecanoic acid and 9,10-phenanthraquinone were identified by GC-MS analyses as the main intermediate compounds during phenanthrene degradation, and all the intermediates were finally mineralized. The repeated use of biosynthesized schwertmannite for phenanthrene degradation illustrated its stability and reusability as a Fenton-like catalyst. Therefore, schwertmannite biosynthesized using A. ferrooxidans is an excellent catalyst for the degradation of phenanthrene in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions.

Elemental sulfur (S 0 ), as one of the most important intermediates formed during chalcopyrite bioleaching, can exist in a variety of allotropic forms, among which amorphous μ-S and orthorhombic ɑ-S 8 are the most common forms. Although previous studies have focused on the effect of S 0 on chalcopyrite bioleaching, how S 0 allotropes affect chalcopyrite bioleaching is unclear. Therefore, in this work, the differential effect of ɑ-S 8 and μ-S on chalcopyrite bioleaching by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans ( A. ferrooxidans ) was studied at the molecular and atomic levels by combining synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, comparative transcriptome analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, accompanied by the determination of solution behaviors and mineral surface morphologies. The results showed that µ-S was favorable for bacterial adsorption and that the addition of µ-S could promote the copper extraction rates by A. ferrooxidans , while the addition of ɑ-S 8 inhibited the copper extraction rates. The XANES results showed that both cases with the addition of ɑ-S 8 and µ-S could affect the formation and evolution of secondary minerals during bioleaching by A. ferrooxidans . The comparative transcriptome analysis showed that the gene expression of A. ferrooxidans was much more affected by the addition of µ-S, with more genes upregulated than ɑ-S 8 . The DFT results indicated that both ɑ-S 8 and µ-S could adsorb on the CuFeS 2 (0 0 1) surface easily, and µ-S could make the CuFeS 2 surface obviously change, while ɑ-S 8 hindered the adsorption of bacterial cells. Of note, µ-S could enhance the interaction between the CuFeS 2 (0 0 1) surface and bacterial cells with stronger bonding and more transferred electrons than ɑ-S 8 .

Worldwide graphene use is rapidly increasing in a variety of industrial applications to such an extent that efflux into the environment seems inevitable where the likely final reservoirs of graphene wastes is likely to be wastewater treatment plants are. Despite this an understanding of how graphene products impact the bioleaching of metals from sludge is still limited. In this study, the effect of reduced graphene oxide synthesized from eucalyptus leaf extracts (EL-rGO) on Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ bioleaching from sludge was investigated. The major new findings were that EL-rGO had a negative effect on Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) growth; since optical density decreased by 0.059 as EL-rGO dose increased from 1 to 50 mg/L, and the bioleaching of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ decreased by 27.7 and 20.2%, respectively. While at a EL-rGO dose of 1 mg/L A. ferrooxidans grew better, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that exposure to EL-rGO caused cell membrane disruption at 50 mg/L. Cytotoxicity tests showed that this was related to an increase in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release rate and a decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. These new findings provide evidence that green synthesized rGO is toxic to microorganisms and that toxicity increased with rGO dose.

Chalcopyrite is the most abundant copper-bearing sulfide mineral, characterized by a stable crystal structure. Bioleaching of chalcopyrite is inherently slow and further constrained by surface passivation layers during prolonged bioleaching. In this study, bacteriophages released from Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans were introduced to promote chalcopyrite bioleaching. Mineralogical characterization, microbial profiling, and functional gene analysis were employed to reveal the underlying mechanisms. One day after phage introduction, phage abundance was 9.42 × 10 5 VLPs mL −1 in the phage-treated group, 150-fold higher than in the control (6.26 × 10 3 VLPs mL −1 ). Over a 60-day leaching period, the copper leaching efficiency of the phage-treated group was 31.72%, significantly higher than that of the control (20.43%). Phage introduction alleviated surface passivation, suppressed elemental sulfur (S 0 ) and jarosite-type deposition, and increased the apparent product-layer diffusion rate constant 3.60-fold. Bacterial diversity and the relative abundance of heterotrophic bacteria were elevated. The increase in heterotrophic bacteria may alleviate the inhibitory effects of organic matter on autotrophic bioleaching microorganisms. Genes associated with the Sox system, dissimilatory sulfur metabolism, and organic sulfur transformation were significantly enriched in the phage-treated group, consistent with enhanced S 0 turnover and reduced surface accumulation. Together, these results indicate that phage introduction enhances chalcopyrite bioleaching by alleviating surface passivation and promoting sulfur turnover through coupled interfacial and microbial regulation. This study provides a novel approach for sustainable intensification of bioleaching of refractory sulfide minerals.

Arsenopyrite is an important gold-bearing sulfide mineral, and pretreatment is essential before gold extraction to maximize gold recovery. Bioleaching, with its advantages of simple operation and environmental friendliness, has received widespread attention over the past decade. However, the low efficiency and long cycle of bioleaching hinder its large-scale application. Humic acid (HA) is a potential substance that can enhance the bioleaching of arsenopyrite and has advantages such as ease of acquisition, and environmental friendliness. Currently, there is a lack of research on the promoting effect and mechanism of HA on the bioleaching of arsenopyrite under the action of mesophile microorganism. This study investigates the effects of HA mediated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans on the arsenopyrite leaching behavior, the valence states and forms of arsenic. The results showed HA can promote the bioleaching of arsenopyrite and shorten the leaching cycle. The addition of 20 mg/L HA can significantly reduce the bioleaching cycle of arsenopyrite from 14 days (without HA) to 6 days. HA can promote the growth of microorganisms and enhance the Fe/S oxidation capacity of microorganisms. Meanwhile, HA can adsorb onto the mineral surface, facilitating the oxidation of arsenopyrite by Fe 3+ adsorbed by HA, thereby promoting the bioleaching of arsenopyrite. This study offers new insights into shortening arsenopyrite bioleaching cycle.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a notorious environmental issue, and its economically and environmentally sustainable management remains challenging. A major driving force of AMD formation is the biooxidation of pyrite, largely mediated by acidophilic bacteria like Leptospirillum and Acidithiobacillus . Our previous study demonstrated that lignin can effectively inhibit pyrite oxidation by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, thereby preventing AMD formation at the source. Building upon this, the current study investigated the structure-activity relationship of lignin in inhibiting A. ferrooxidans activity. Our findings indicated that low-molecular-weight lignin exhibits superior antibacterial activity, primarily through the induction of reactive oxygen species both intracellularly and extracellularly. Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis revealed that lignin influences critical bacterial pathways, including membrane biogenesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and signal transduction. This influence leads to an excessive consumption of the bacteria's internal carbon sources and disrupts their internal signal transduction system, ultimately inhibiting biofilm formation. This disruption culminates in cellular damage and bacterial cell death. Overall, this study offers technical guidance for selecting and preparing lignin with high antibacterial activity to enhance AMD control. It also sheds light on the molecular inactivation mechanism of lignin inhibiting A. ferrooxidans , providing a scientific basis for preventing acidification and supporting ecological restoration in new mining areas.

Schwertmannite and jarosite, two secondary Fe(III)-hydroxysulfate minerals abundant in acid-mine drainage, can be biosynthesized by an Fe-oxidizing bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans , but the differences of their catalytic activities in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions are still unclear to date. In the present study, the catalytic activities of biosynthesized schwertmannite and jarosite were compared through investigating the heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of a target organic pollutant phenol. Results showed that these two catalysts efficiently catalyzed heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of phenol, and the degradation in both systems consisted of an induction period (first-stage) and a followed rapid degradation stage (second-stage). Schwertmannite exhibited a much higher catalytic capacity than jarosite, because of its shorter induction period and higher kinetic rate ( k ) of the second-stage, but jarosite catalytically degraded phenol in a much wider pH range (pH 3.0–7.5) over schwertmannite (pH 3.0–4.5). Based on the results of radical scavenger effect, H 2 O 2 decomposition, Fe leaching and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis, similar catalytic mechanisms were proposed in schwertmannite/H 2 O 2 and jarosite/H 2 O 2 systems, in which the induction period can be ascribed to the activation of catalysts by H 2 O 2 and the second-stage was mainly attributed to the homogeneous Fenton reaction in bulk solution. During the catalytic degradation of phenol, catechol was firstly accumulated and was then further decomposed into smaller molecular organic acids. The repeated uses of schwertmannite and jarosite for phenol degradation manifested their stability and reusability as Fenton-like catalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants.
