Ag-MXene as peroxidase-mimicking nanozyme for enhanced bacteriocide and cholesterol sensing

Yu Chen,Chengyu Rong,Wenhui Gao,Siyu Luo,Yuxin Guo,Yingqiu Gu,Guohai Yang,Weiqing Xu,Chengzhou Zhu,Lu-Lu Qu

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are ideal alternative antibacterial reagents for rapid and effective sterilization. Although a variety of ROS-based antimicrobial strategies have been developed, many are still limited by their inefficiency. Herein, we report the synthesis of the Ag-MXene nanozyme, which have superior peroxidase-like activity for antibacterial applications. As a result, Ag-MXene nanozyme can efficiently increase the level of intracellular ROS, converting H 2 O 2 into hydroxyl radicals that effectively kill both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and disrupting the bacterial biofilm formation. Moreover, a sensitive and selective colorimetric biosensor was constructed for assaying cholesterol based on the Ag-MXene’s prominent peroxidase-mimicking activity and the cholesterol oxidase cascade reaction. The biosensor exhibits high performance with a linear cholesterol detection range of 2–800 μM, and a detection limit of 0.6 μM. Ag-MXene nanozyme can be used for the rapid detection of cholesterol in serum without complicated sample pretreatment. Collectively, it is conceivable that the proposed Ag-MXene nanozyme could be used as a biocide and as a cholesterol sensor. This study provides a broad prospect for the rapid detection and sterilization of MXene nanozymes in the biomedical field.

Dual-drive energy conversion plasmonic Ag@MXene thermal management textiles inspired by bearing structure

Yidan Zhang,Zhiguang Guo

Multifunctional wearable textiles can simulate human perception and convert it into visual data, which has advanced application prospects. As an important branch, thermal management wearable textiles have been widely concerned in the aspects of thermal insulation, flame retardant, photothermal anti-icing, electrothermal deicing and even water evaporation. Here, inspired by the bearing structure, we simply soaked the PET textile in Ag@MXene hybrid solution several times to form a Ag@MXene conductive network with Ag NPs as the connection point on the textile fiber, and finally carry out hydrophobic modification. Based on plasma effect, the synergistic action of Ag NPs and MXene enhances the photothermal response of the material. In addition, the addition of Ag NPs effectively reduces the stacking between MXene layers and forms a Ag@MXene conductive network with Ag NPs as the connection point on the textile fibers. The stable temperature range of PDMS/Ag@MXene PET textile is 70–80 °C under one solar illumination intensity, and the stable temperature of PDMS/Ag@MXene PET textile can reach 117 °C at a constant voltage of 3 V. Based on the excellent thermal effect, this textile achieves photothermal anti-icing, electric thermal de-icing, keeping warm and removing sweat. The textile has a water evaporation efficiency of about 0.58 g h −1 , which can achieve excellent anti-sweat function. Finally, the textile also achieved rapid flame retardant within 7 s. PDMS/Ag@MXene PET textile processes excellent photothermal and electrothermal conversion ability, acid/water stability and flame retardant ability, and has promising application prospects in thermal management textiles such as deicing and anti-icing, fire prevention, warmth and water evaporation.

Preparation and sensing properties of multiscale conductive filler hybrid CNTs@Ag-MXene-TPU/TPU double-layer strain sensing materials

Yanzhi Cai,Dengpeng Chen,Laifei Cheng,Siyu Guo,Zhongyi Hu,Yuhan Wang,Haiming Yu,Yuan Zhou

The performance of sensors is often limited by the structural characteristics of the single form of conductive filler, making it difficult for sensors to simultaneously consider the broad sensing range and high sensitivity. How to achieve high sensitivity and broad working range of sensors through innovative sensing materials and sensor structure design remains a challenge. Here, a flexible sensor with multidimensional sensing materials and a double-layer structure is constructed. It consists of a high-performance CNTs@Ag-MXene-TPU sensing layer and a TPU flexible layer with significant deformability. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the double-layer structure and multidimensional sensing materials, this sensor has a high sensitivity of up to maximum gauge factor of 12216.3 and a wide sensing range of 300 %. Its response time and recovery time can reach 200 and 250 ms, respectively, and it also exhibits excellent cycling stability.

Enhancing the performance of injectable self-activating PVA-alginate hydrogel by Ag@MXene nanozyme as NIR responsive and photoenhanced antibacterial platform for wound healing

Zepeng Liang,Zelin Sang,Yumei Li,Zhenhua Chen,Xifan Mei,Xiuli Ren

Design of tough and functional hydrogel based on carbohydrate polymers is always attracting. Injectable hydrogel based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (Alg) have great potential for wound repair. However, simple hydrogel lacks functionality, such as antibacterial, which limits its application. Herein, we proposed a strategy of using Ag@MXene nanozyme to functionalize hydrogel and construct a near-infrared laser (NIR) responsive, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generating, and antibacterial platform for wound repair. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and Ag cluster modified Ti 3 C 2 (E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 ) was prepared to enhance the performance of injectable PVA-alginate hydrogel (E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H). The functionalized hydrogel presents porous structures (67 % porosity percentage) and excellent compressive and tensile properties (elongation up to 157 %). Under NIR laser irradiation, E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H showed photothermal conversion efficiency and ROS generation ability. The inhibition rate for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) can reach to 91.2 % and 90.3 %, respectively. Molecular biology experiments showed that the composite hydrogel could promote angiogenesis and wound healing by upregulating the expression of anti-inflammatory factors. The obtained injectable E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H hydrogel is potential in accelerating diabetic wound healing.

Electrocatalytic study on the degradation of tigecycline wastewater using a three-dimensional porous agarose@MXene hydrogel carbon cloth electrode with high conductivity

Haina Bai,Jian Zhang,Shipeng Li,Muchen Lu,Jia Li,Ruoyi Li

In this study successfully prepared AG@MXene/CC composite electrodes by employing a thermosolvation-ultrasonication technique combined with an impregnation method. This approach uniformly dispersed MXene, known for its high electrochemical properties, onto the surface of carbon cloth (CC) through biomass-derived AG hydrogels featuring a three-dimensional network structure. The hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces between AG and MXene were harnessed to enhance material interactions, thereby improving electron transfer efficiency and electrocatalytic activity. Experimental results demonstrated that the composite electrode could achieve up to 96.16 % degradation rate of tigecycline (TGC) within 30 min under optimal conditions. Furthermore, this study delved into the reaction mechanism of the electrocatalytic system, clarifying the key roles of H* and H 2 O 2 generated at the cathode, as well as ·OH and active chlorine species on the anode's surface during the TGC degradation process. A synergistic catalytic mechanism for the cathode and anode was proposed. The intermediates that may be formed during TGC degradation were analyzed and their toxicity was evaluated, confirming the high biosafety of the treated wastewater. This work not only offers new insights for designing efficient and stable electrocatalysts but also broadens the application scope of the green material AG in the electrocatalytic degradation of antibiotics.

Humidity/photothermal dual-responsive TpPa-SO3H/Ag@MXene actuator for intelligent thermal management

Song Luo,Xiaohe Tian,Li Pan,Runhua Zhou,Shunda Zhu,Zuyi Yan,Kui Rao,Bo Liu,Shaofei Wang,Hong Wu

With the increasing severity of urban heat islands, personal thermal management (PTM) has emerged as a critical solution for maintaining human thermophysiological comfort in dynamic environments. Traditional air conditioning systems are energy-intensive and lack individualized control, highlighting the need for efficient, low-energy PTM strategies. Current PTM materials often operate in static modes, limiting their adaptability to varying conditions. To overcome this, we developed a Janus-structured humidity-photothermal actuator (TpPa-SO₃H/Ag@M) by integrating a TpPa-SO₃H covalent organic framework (COF) for rapid water transport and a silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-intercalated MXene (Ag@M) for humidity gradient formation and enhanced photothermal conversion. The COF layer facilitates moisture accumulation, while the Ag@M laminar structure delays water diffusion, enabling a sensitive humidity response. AgNPs expand the MXene interlayer spacing, improving water uptake and response efficiency by triple compared to initial TpPa-SO₃H/MXene systems, while also preventing structural collapse during cycling. Additionally, AgNPs enables strong solar absorption, boosting photothermal performance. Under combined humidity and light stimulation, the Janus actuator exhibits dynamic bending, enabling autonomous sweat evaporation and body temperature regulation without external energy input. This dual-responsive design offers a promising approach for adaptive, energy-efficient PTM in extreme environments.

Conductive, self-healing, and antibacterial Ag/MXene-PVA hydrogel as wearable skin-like sensors

Lumin Li,Xiaofeng Ji,Kai Chen

The rapid development of flexible electronic technology has led to the in-depth study of flexible wearable sensors to achieve accurate sensing under different external stimuli. However, it is still a huge challenge to develop hydrogel-based wearable skin-like sensors with super ductility, high sensitivity, and self-healing properties. Herein, the Ti3C2 type of MXene was synthesized, and the Ag/MXene nanocomplexes were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol-borax matrix to construct a novel composite hydrogel as the multifunctional nanofillers, which could bring both improved properties and novel functionalities. The Ag/MXene-Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel displayed integrated merits of highly strain sensitive (GF = 3.26), self-healing (within 10 min, 91% healing efficiency), and excellent antibacterial activity. The hydrogel could be assembled into a wearable skin-like sensor to monitor human movement, including large deformations (finger, elbow, wrist, and knee bending) and tiny deformations (mouth’s movement and throat vocalization) in real time. Therefore, this work shed a new light on the development of flexible wearable skin-like sensors for the personalized healthcare monitoring, human–machine interfaces, and artificial intelligence.

Lightweight, flexible, and electrically conductive thin films with high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness and excellent thermal management capability are ideal for portable and flexible electronic devices. Herein, the asymmetric and multilayered structure Ag-MXene/ANFs composite papers (AMAGM) were fabricated based on Ag-MXene hybrids and aramid nanofibers (ANFs) via a self-reduction and alternating vacuum-assisted filtration process. The resultant AMAGM composite papers exhibit high electrical conductivity of 248,120 S m−1, excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength of 124.21 MPa and fracture strain of 4.98%, superior EMI shielding effectiveness (62 dB), ultra-high EMI SE/t (11,923 dB cm2g−1) and outstanding EMI SE reliability as high as 96.1% even after 5000 cycles of bending deformation benefiting from the unique structure and the 3D network at a thickness of 34 μm. Asymmetric structures play an important role in regulating reflection and absorption of electromagnetic waves. In addition, the multifunctional nanocomposite papers reveal outstanding thermal management performances such as ultrafast thermal response, high heating temperatures at low operation voltage, and high heating stability. Ag-MXene conductive ink-based highly sensitive, screen-printed sweat sensor with multi-ions detection

Rimsha Abbas,Muhammad Umair,Suzhu Yu,Jingjing Luo,Peike Wang,Jun Wei

Highly conductive and flexible inks are crucial for the fabrication of next-generation wearable electrochemical sensors. This study presents a multi-ion sweat sensor composed of screen-printed Ag-MXene conductive ink, featuring a high electrical conductivity of 2 × 10 6 S m -1 . A novel electrode configuration was developed, comprising three working electrodes (WEs) together with a common reference (RE) and counter electrode (CE), all coated with the same ion-selective gel. The use of a uniform gel across all WEs ensures a consistent sensing environment, minimizes ion cross-talk, and improves repeatability. The Ag-MXene ink has excellent electrochemical activity, resulting in rapid, reproducible, and very selective potentiometric responses even at low ion concentrations. The Ag-MXene ink-based multi-ion sweat sensor achieved near-Nernstian sensitivities of 65.1 ± 0.7 mV/decade for Na + , 59.8 ± 0.6 mV/decade for K + , and 57.5 ± 0.8 mV/decade for Li + . These results are close to the theoretical Nernstian slope (∼59.2 mV/decade at 25 °C). On-body testing reveals that the sensor performs consistently under mechanical deformation and in real-world situations, demonstrating its viability for continuous health monitoring. After mechanical cycling, the Ag–MXene electrodes retained R/R 0 ≈1 with negligible hysteresis, demonstrating the structural and electrical integrity of the composite ink. Sensing cycling further verified stability: repeated stepwise measurements for Na + (5–160 mM), K + (1–32 mM), and Li + (1–100 mM) produced nearly identical potential peaks across successive cycles with no cumulative drift and minimal up/down hysteresis. The calibrations remained near-Nernstian, with response times of ∼2–3 s and sub-second recoveries, demonstrating excellent mechanical and electrochemical durability. The scalable screen-printing fabrication approach enables the cost-effective and reliable fabrication of flexible, wearable multi-ion sensors. This study demonstrates the potential of Ag-MXene-based electrodes for high-performance, multi-functional sweat sensing and offers a feasible path to enhance wearable electronic technologies.

Structural and electronic co-regulation of Ag@MXene-VOH heterostructures for durable aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Chenlong Wang,Yifan Zu,Jun Natsuki,Jing Xu,Xueting Zhai,Chenhong Lang,Xiaojuan Li,Toshiaki Natsuki,Wenqi Nie

Hydrated vanadium pentoxide (VOH) is regarded as a promising cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) owing to its open layered framework and multivalent redox chemistry. However, its practical application is limited by sluggish charge-transfer kinetics and structural instability during repeated Zn²⁺/H⁺ insertion and extraction. Herein, an integrated AgNP@MX-VOH composite cathode is constructed by coupling VOH nanorods with Ag nanoparticle-decorated Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene. The flexible MXene sheets provide continuous electron-transport pathways and bridge neighboring VOH nanostructures, while the dispersed AgNPs act as local conductive contact nodes and regulate the stacking configuration of the MXene assembly. This hierarchical interfacial network helps suppress MXene restacking, maintain accessible porous regions, and improve the structural and electrical stability of the conductive framework. Meanwhile, the formation of the AgNP@MX-VOH heterointerface modifies the local electronic environment of VOH, accompanied by an increased V⁴⁺ contribution and enhanced oxygen-defect-related features. These structural and interfacial effects facilitate charge transfer and reversible ion-storage kinetics while maintaining electrode integrity during cycling. Consequently, the AgNP@MX-VOH cathode delivers a high reversible capacity of 361.2 mAh g⁻¹ at 0.5 A g⁻¹ , a capacity of 268.96 mAh g⁻¹ at 5 A g⁻¹ , and 90.2% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 5 A g⁻¹ . This work provides an interfacial-engineering strategy for constructing stable MXene/vanadium-oxide heterostructures toward durable aqueous zinc-ion storage.

Lightweight multifunctional electromagnetic shielding composites achieved by depositing Ag@MXene hybrid particles on wood-based aerogel

Shuang Wu,Ting-yu Zhu,Zhu Zeng,De-xiang Sun,Jing-hui Yang,Xiao-dong Qi,Yong Wang

As electronic devices become more integrated into daily life, concerns about electromagnetic radiation pollution become more severe, despite the increased portability they offer. Designing a lightweight and multifunctional material that is environmentally friendly, thermally conductive, and electromagnetically shielded is urgently needed. In this work, novel composites were fabricated by incorporating Ag@MXene hybrid particles into the wood-based aerogel. Compared with the aerogels containing only Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) or MXene , the Ag@MXene/W aerogel exhibited more homogeneous dispersion of unfolded MXene nanosheets and more AgNPs but higher porosity (97.1 %) and smaller density (0.047 g cm −3 ). Consequently, the Ag@MXene/W aerogel exhibited high compressibility and low energy dissipation, remarkable strain sensitivity, impressive electrical conductivity (33.9 S m −1 ) and specific electromagnetic shielding efficiency (5765.96 dB cm 2 g −1 ), and high thermal conductivity (0.81 W m −1 K −1 ). The excellent comprehensive performances ensure that the aerogel has wide applications in various fields, including electromagnetic pollution protection, strain detecting, and thermal management, etc.

Conductive cotton fabric fabricated using stable Ag/MXene colloidal solution and PDMS for heating and electromagnetic shielding

Xinyu Wang,Qingbo Xu,Jingchao Wang,Peng Wang,Yanyan Zhang

Cracking of conductive coatings is a primary cause of the poor durability of conductive fabrics. To address this, an Ag/MXene colloidal solution was prepared, which was stable owing to the evenly dispersed Ag particles on the MXene sheet structure. A cotton fabric sample was then coated with Ag/MXene using a dipping method, which resulted in excellent electrical conductivity. Finally, the Ag/MXene conductive coating on the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-covered fabric significantly improved the conductive durability of the fabric. The finished cotton fabric exhibited excellent conductive properties, with a surface resistance of 13.9 ± 0.3 Ω/sq. In addition, the finished cotton fabric exhibited excellent mechanical durability against bending, folding, and strain. Therefore, finished cotton fabrics with excellent electrical conductivity and durability have great potential for application in wearable textiles and flexible sensors.
