Ag2O/TiO2 nanorods heterojunctions as a strong visible-light photocatalyst for phenol treatment

Jiang Bo,Jiang Liangliang,Shi Xuewei,Wang Wenchao,Li Guisheng,Zhu Fengxia,Zhang Dieqing

Ag 2 O/TiO 2 nanorods heterojunctions were synthesized by an environmentally benign approach, including hydrothermal treating TiCl 4 aqueous solution for the formation of rutile TiO 2 nanorods and precipitating Ag 2 O quantum dots on the surface of rutile TiO 2 nanorods. The as-obtained Ag 2 O quantum dots were highly uniformly deposited on the surface of rutile TiO 2 rods for the formation Ag 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunctions photocatalyst. Such photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N 2 adsorption desorption, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the samples were evaluated by phenol under visible-light irradiation. It was found that the optimal Ag:Ti molar ratio (4:10) contributed the highest photocatalytic performance for removing phenol (10 mg/L) with a degradation rate of 66 %, about 11 and 5 times of that of the pure rutile TiO 2 nanorods and N-doped TiO 2 , respectively, after 40 min of reaction under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Such greatly enhanced photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared photocatalysts was attributed to the strong Ag 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunctions, 1D rutile TiO 2 architecture, and high visible light absorption capability.

Hydrogen production from bio-derived biphasic photoreforming over a raspberry-like amphiphilic Ag2O-TiO2/SiO2 catalyst

Enqi Bu,Ying Chen,Chao Wang,Zhengdong Cheng,Xianglong Luo,Riyang Shu,Jingtao Zhang,Mingzheng Liao,Zhiqiang Jiang,Qingbin Song

Photoreforming of bio-derived liquids is anattractive approach toward sustainable H 2 production. Although a large number of bio-liquids are thermodynamically feasible for photocatalytic hydrogen production, few of them have been involved in this process due to their water insoluble nature. To achieve and promote the efficiency of photoreforming hydrogen production in bio-derived biphasic system, the Pickering interfacial catalysis was established over an amphiphilic Ag 2 O-TiO 2 /SiO 2 catalyst. In this case, the Ag 2 O-TiO 2 /SiO 2 sample was synthesized by means of an electrostatic self-assembly method by surface charge regulation of SiO 2 and the surface hydrophobic modification of Ag 2 O-TiO 2 /SiO 2 particles using a Pickering emulsion method. As shown in the results, the amphiphilic Ag 2 O-TiO 2 /SiO 2 particles were observed to successfully stabilize the bio-octanol/water emulsion. Even the complex structure and surface modification slightly reduce the light absorption efficiency and specific surface area of the catalyst, the hydrogen yield was greatly promoted over Ag 2 O-TiO 2 /SiO 2 compared to that of bare TiO 2 , Ag 2 O-TiO 2 and TiO 2 /SiO 2 . It was also discovered that the cyclic hydrogen production performance can be improved by simple re-emulsification. The effect of bio-octanol concentration for photoreforming was studied by a Langmuir-Hinshelwood-type kinetic model, and the reaction rate constant and bio-octanol adsorption constant were obtained. This study shows that photocatalyst after effective surface amphiphilic modification could provide a prospective approach for the hydrogen production from a bio-derived oil/water biphasic system under solar light.

Facile preparation of PAN@Ag–Ag2O/TiO2 nanofibers with enhanced photocatalytic activity and reusability toward oxidation of As(III)

Ren Hai-Tao,Han Jing,Li Ting-Ting,Liang Yu,Jing Meng-Zhen,Jiang Si-Meng,Lin Jia-Horng,Lou Ching-Wen

Visible light response PAN@Ag–Ag 2 O/TiO 2 (PAN@AT) nanofibers with different mass ratios between Ag–Ag 2 O and TiO 2 were synthesized via a facile electrospinning technique and pH-induced precipitation reaction. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope analyses manifest the formation of Ag–Ag 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunctions, and Ag–Ag 2 O/TiO 2 nanoparticles are evenly distributed on PAN nanofibers. The fabricated nanofibers show a highly photocatalytic performance toward As(III) oxidation under visible light, and the conversion is 92.1% after 120-min reaction at pH 5.0 in the system of PAN@AT4. Furthermore, conversion of As(III) can retain 88.6% of the original activity after repeating four cycles, indicating the good recyclability of PAN@AT4 nanofibers. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectra analysis further demonstrate that the predominate active species for As(III) oxidation by PAN@AT4 are h + and · OH. The enhanced catalytic activity of PAN@AT4 is therefore ascribed to the formation of Ag–Ag 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunctions on PAN surface and the efficient separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. This study provides a new material to oxidize reducing pollutants [such as As(III)] and also sheds light on the fabrication of recyclable photocatalysts.

A New Strategy for Improving the Efficiency of Low-temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with CH4via the Combination of Non-thermal Plasma and Ag2O/TiO2 Photocatalyst

Wang Hui,Wang Jiafeng,Zhang Lei,Yu Qinqin,Chen Zewen,Wu Shengji

In the present work, a remarkable combination of non-thermal plasma and photocatalyst was developed to widen the operating temperature window of selective catalytic reduction(SCR) of NO x with CH 4 , especially to improve the low-temperature removal efficiency of NO x . It was shown that the operating temperature window was significantly widened. Among all the catalysts prepared, 1%Ag 2 O/TiO 2 showed the highest catalytic activity for NO x removal due to the utilization of near ultraviolet light. The conversion of NO x to N 2 over the in-plasma 1%Ag 2 O/TiO 2 photocatalyst at 60 and 300 °C could achieve 31.8% and 53.0%, respectively. The combination mode of plasma and catalyst affected NO x removal efficiency greatly, the in-plasma catalysis outperformed the post-plasma catalytic mode remarkably, signifying the contribution of photocatalytic processes on the catalysts. Meanwhile, the characterizations of the catalyst demonstrated that the morphology and structure of the Ag 2 O/TiO 2 catalyst were unchanged throughout the non-thermal plasma and photocatalytic processes, implying the superior stability of the catalyst.

A facile synthesis of Ag/Ag2O@TiO2 for toluene degradation under UV–visible light: Effect of Ag formation by partial reduction of Ag2O on photocatalyst stability

Xiuling Xue,Xiuwen Gong,Xiaoyi Chen,Bor-Yann Chen

In recent years, environmental pollution caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has posed a great challenge to environmental protection. This first-attempt study provided a novel facile chemical precipitation-reduction method to construct Ag/Ag 2 O@TiO 2 (A/AO@TO) photocatalyst for the removal of gaseous toluene. The introduction of Ag in the presence of NaBH 4 with N 2 purging inhibited the passivation of Ag 2 O and thus enhanced the stability of A/AO@TO. A/AO@TO exhibited outstanding photocatalytic performance toward gaseous toluene under different light sources like UV light , simulated sunlight and natural light, which were 99.3%, 48.3% and 28.5%, respectively. The superior photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the synergy effect of p-n heterojunction between Ag 2 O and TiO 2 and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag, which facilitate the separation of charge carriers and thus suppress the recombination rate of them, and enhance the light response. The active species like ·OH, ·O 2 − and h + were contributed to the excellent photocatalytic performance. The study provided a new method for the fabrication of A/AO@TO photocatalyst and introduce p-n scheme A/AO@TO as a feasible natural sunlight photocatalyst for further applications.

Polarization field promoted photoelectrocatalysis for synergistic environmental remediation and H2 production

Yunni Liu,Qian Li,Zichao Lian,Jinchen Fan,Ying Tao,Guisheng Li,Hexing Li

Polarization field introduced photoelectrocatalytic system has been raised and applied for environmental purification and green fuel generation. Herein, we synthesized the Ag 2 O/TiO 2 nanotubes arrays (TNTs) p - n heterojunction photoanodes and innovatively introduced the SrTiO 3 (STO) as a relay to construct a highly stable PEC system. The SrTiO 3 layers with the ferroelectric properties were inserted in the interfaces between p-Ag 2 O and n-TiO 2 , creating a charge-stable polarized electric field thereby maintaining a constant driving force that promoted the effctive separation of electron and hole between SrTiO 3 and TNTs, and prevented the electron transfer from SrTiO 3 to Ag 2 O. Controlling suitable annealing and regulating hydrothermal time could induce SrTiO 3 spontaneous polarization, resulting in effective photoinduced charge separation. Consequently, the as-designed TNTs/STO/Ag 2 O photoanodes exhibited excellent PEC activity and stability (>40 h) for both persistent organic pollutants degradation and synergistic hydrogen evolution owing to the strengthened charge carrier capture ability of solar light and improved photocurrent density.

Dynamic interfacial proton-electron synchronization on MOF-derived Ag2O/TiO2 heterojunctions for steering CO2 photoreduction to methane

Jiaman Wang,Zekai Cui,Yuechang Wei,Zhiling Tang,Jing Xiong,Yingli Wang,Xiong Wang,Xuanzhen Li,Yunpeng Liu,Zhen Zhao

MOF-derived Ag 2 O/TiO 2 p-n heterojunction enhances charge separation. • Ag 2 O acts as a proton shuttle, enabling selective CO 2 reduction to CH 4 . • In-situ DRIFTS and DFT reveal the key role of *CO protonation. • Achieves 27.89 μmol g −1 h −1 CH 4 rate with 85.87% selectivity. The photocatalytic conversion efficiency of CO 2 with H 2 O to hydrocarbons is dependent on the simultaneous enrichment of protons and electrons. Herein, the composite photocatalyst of Ag 2 O/TiO 2 were constructed by anchoring Ag 2 O species onto the MOF-derived TiO 2 support via a laser deposition technique. The optimally engineered Ag 2 O/TiO 2 photocatalyst exhibited a remarkable CH 4 selectivity of 85.87% with a formation rate of 27.89 μmol g −1 h −1 in the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CH 4 , surpassing the near-zero CH 4 yield of pristine MIL-125(Ti). By combining the results of in situ DRIFT spectra and density functional theory calculations, the photocatalytic mechanism is proposed: The catalytic interface effectively overcomes the kinetic bottleneck of *CO hydrogenation, by synchronously delivering enriched protons from the Ag 2 O sites and photogenerated electrons from the MOF-derived TiO 2 support. This targeted facilitation of the critical *CO protonation step suppresses intermediate desorption which dictates the selectivity toward CH 4 . This work unveils a universal strategy of coupling robust MOF-derived microenvironments with dynamic proton-electron delivery to overcome kinetic limitations in multi-step catalytic processes. Fabrication of Ag2O/TiO2-Zeolite composite and its enhanced solar light photocatalytic performance and mechanism for degradation of norfloxacin

Jianfeng Gou,Qiuling Ma,Xiaoyong Deng,Yuqi Cui,Huixuan Zhang,Xiuwen Cheng,Xiaoli Li,Mingzheng Xie,Qingfeng Cheng

Norfloxacin, as an antimicrobial drug, has frequently been detected in municipal plants, which is predicted to be potential risk on human beings and the environment. In the present study, zeolite immobilizes silver oxide decorated titanium dioxide (Ag 2 O/TiO 2 -Zeolite) composite has been fabricated through modified sol-gel method. Afterwards, physicochemical properties of the as-fabricated Ag 2 O/TiO 2 -Zeolite sample are systematically studied by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron microscopy, ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and surface photovoltage spectra measurements. Besides these, photocatalytic (PC) performance of Ag 2 O/TiO 2 -Zeolite composite is evaluated by photodecomposition of norfloxacin under simulated solar light illumination and generation of active hydroxyl ( OH) radicals. Results indicate that the decorated Ag species exists in the form of Ag 2 O, which can greatly enhance the visible light absorbance and charge separation efficiency. Furthermore, Ag 2 O/TiO 2 -Zeolite composite displays superior PC performance, which is mainly ascribed to the intense light absorbance in visible region, narrow band gap level and high charge separation efficiency. In addition, the solar light PC degradation pathways of norfloxacin are proposed according to the HPLC-MS/MS measurements, including hydroxylation addition to parent compound, decarboxylation and defluorination of side chain from the norfloxacin. Moreover, the as-fabricated Ag 2 O/TiO 2 -Zeolite composite exhibits high stability after consecutive utilization for seven times.
