A facile Z-scheme AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction photocatalyst with oxygen vacancies was fabricated by a water-bath method. The structural, morphological, optical and electronic properties of as-synthesized samples were systematically characterized. The oxygen vacancies were confirmed by EPR, which could optimize the band-gap of the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction and improve the photo-induced electron transfer. The optimized AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction showed excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency (82%) for tetracycline (TC). Simultaneously, E. coli was completely inactivated within 60 min due to the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction. The elevated catalytic activity of the optimal AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction was ascribed to the synergistic effect of the enhanced light absorption and effective photoinduced charge carrier separation and transfer. Moreover, the degradation efficiency of the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction towards ofloxacin, norfloxacin and Lanasol Red 5B was 73%, 74% and 96%, respectively. The experimental factors for the degradation efficiency of TC were also studied. Furthermore, active species trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radicals (˙O2−) were the main reactive species, and the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism helped to improve the photocatalytic activity.

AgCl/BiOCl heterostructures were synthesized by a simple one-pot combustion method. The as-synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photodegradation experiments show that the AgCl/BiOCl heterostructures exhibit better photocatalytic properties than pure BiOCl sample to degrade rhodamine B. The 15% AgCl/BiOCl shows the best photocatalytic performance under the UV light irradiation. The formation of heterostructure improves the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes derived from the coupling effect of BiOCl and AgCl heterojunction.

Photocatalysis technology is considered as a most promising method to decompose organic pollutant since the inexhaustible solar energy and facile reaction condition. Herein, a series of flower-like Ag/AgCl/BiOCl photocatalysts are successfully synthesized via hydrothermal and photochemical deposition method. All the samples are investigated and characterized by X-Ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and Photoluminescence to insight into the microstructures and optical properties. During the photocatalytic degradation of Methyl orange experiments, the optimized Ag/AgCl/BiOCl sample prepared by photoreduction with 40 min exhibits the excellent photocatalytic performance. Under visible-light irradiation for 60 min, degradation rate of Methyl orange reaches 97%, which is 9.7, 6.1 and 4.6 times higher than that of AgCl, Ag/BiOCl and BiOCl, respectively. The UV–vis diffuse reflectance and Photoluminescence spectra of the Ag/AgCl/BiOCl photocatalyst verify that the enhanced photocatalytic activity is ascribed to its extended absorption range to visible-light region and the efficient separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. In addition, the radical trapping experiment demonstrates that photogenerated hole and superoxide radicals play critical roles in the methyl orange degradation. The corresponding photocatalytic degradation mechanism is proposed that the excellent photocatalytic activity is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic Ag and heterojunction structure of Ag/AgCl/BiOCl photocatalysts.
