The effect of indices of crystal facets on the properties of nanomaterials has attracted widespread interest. However, the synthesis of silver chloride (AgCl) nanocrystals with high-index facets is still a difficult problem. By precisely controlling iodine ions (I − ), AgCl nanocrystals with 24 high-index {433} facets were successfully synthesized. We discussed I − selective landing on specific positions of crystal and its role in controlling the formation of high-index facets. In addition, we also utilized the AgCl crystals to catalyze the degradation of hexavalent chromium, an environmental pollutant. {433}-bounded AgCl crystals exhibits twice catalytic efficiency for K 2 Cr 2 O 7 degradation compare with {311}-bounded. Moreover, its catalytic efficiency is much higher than that of AgCl nanocrystals exposed low-index facets. Graphical abstract Description the formation of AgCl crystal with {433} facets.
AgCl nanocrystals with cubic, spherical and octahedral morphology, and tunable size of 0.3– 2 μm have been successfully prepared by a one pot hydrothermal method using cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) as Cl − source and stabilizer . Besides, the unconventional plate-like AgCl particles can be obtained by the addition of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). Photocatalytic tests show that the as-prepared AgCl photocatalysts with cubic, octahedral and plate morphology all exhibit stable photocatalytic efficiency, and the plate AgCl nanocrystals exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than cubic and octahedral AgCl nanocrystals owing to its high-index facets, stacking faults and twin defects, making it a promising photocatalyst applied in environmental management.
AgCl semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) with trapezohedral (TPH) and concave hexoctahedral (HOH) structures have been successfully synthesized for the first time in high yield by a direct one-pot solvothermal method. The as-prepared TPH, concave HOH AgCl NCs with unconventional polyhedral shapes and smooth surfaces were enclosed by 24 high-index {311} facets and 48 high-index {15 5 2} facets, respectively. A specific ionic liquid poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA) acted as both a Cl− ion precursor and a morphology-controlled stabilizer, which was indispensable for the formation of these high-index faceted AgCl polyhedra and the derived uniform octahedral AgCl in an appropriate concentration of hot AgNO3 and ethylene glycol (EG) solution. With high-index facets exposed, both TPH and concave HOH AgCl NCs exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity than octahedral AgCl NCs that have mainly {111} faces exposed, with lower surface areas and surface energies, for the degradation of organics under sunlight. It is expected that the use of polyhedral AgCl NCs with high-index facets is an effective approach for the design of alternative semiconductor photocatalysts with a high performance, which may find potential applications such as in photochromics and environmental management.
