A facile strategy for obtaining fresh Ag as SERS active substrates

Zibao Gan,Aiwu Zhao,Maofeng Zhang,Dapeng Wang,Wenyu Tao,Hongyan Guo,Da Li,Ming Li,Qian Gao

A facile strategy has been reported to obtain on-line fresh Ag as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates by making AgCl nanoparticles exposed to the laser beam of Raman spectrometer. The composition and morphology of AgCl nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The laser-driven evolvement and possible formation mechanism of cubic AgCl nanoparticles to Ag/AgCl composites were also investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Raman measurements demonstrate that the fresh Ag nanoparticles with a few defects have a prominent SERS sensitivity to probe molecules, such as the 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) and 4-aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules. The SERS intensity of 4-Mpy and PATP increases up to the maximum when the laser irradiation time is prolonged to 50   s, which corresponds to the defect extent and the proportion of fresh Ag in the Ag/AgCl composites. This work provides a simple, efficient and feasible approach for obtaining on-line fresh Ag as SERS substrates.

Formation of AgCl nanoparticle in reverse microemulsion using polymerizable surfactant and the resulting copolymer hybrid membranes

Li-guang Wu,Ting Wang,Zeng Jiang

AgCl nanoparticles were synthesized in water—in—oil microemulsions using polymerizable 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) as the surfactant and a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA) mixture as the oil phase. AgCl/poly(GMA-co-MMA-co-AMPS) copolymer hybrid membranes were prepared by in situ microemulsion polymerization. The morphology of the AgCl particles and hybrid membranes was characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy , and scanning electron microscopy. A size decrease was observed in the AgCl nanoparticles with increased surfactant and salt concentrations. The AgCl nanoparticles maintained an even dispersion in the hybrid membranes. The separation performance of the hybrid membranes was evaluated by pervaporation experiments of benzene/cyclohexane mixtures. The high solubility of the polymerizable surfactant in the MMA-GMA mixture led to better hybrid membrane performance compared with the hybrid membranes prepared by macromolecular surfactant. The swelling–sorption behavior of benzene and cyclohexane indicated that the equilibrium swelling–sorption amounts in all hybrid membranes were larger than in membranes without the nanoparticles. When the surfactant and salt concentrations were both 0.3   mol   L −1 , the equilibrium swelling–sorption amounts in the hybrid membranes reached a maximum.

Fabrication of AgCl@tannic acid-cellulose hydrogels for NaBH4-mediated reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Zhang Mingzhu,Li Meng,Yu Ningya,Su Shengpei,Zhang Xiaomin

A series of tannic acid (TA)-modified cellulose hydrogels embedded size-controlled AgCl nanoparticles (AgCl@TA x -cellulose hydrogels) were fabricated successfully via a one-step method. The size of AgCl nanoparticles in the TA-cellulose hydrogels could be adjusted expediently by varying the TA content. With the increase of TA content, the size of AgCl nanoparticles initially decreased and reached the minimum size of 5.5 nm at 5% TA content and then increased dramatically. The hydrogels with the smallest AgCl nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic activity in NaBH 4 -mediated reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP); the reaction rate constant was as high as 1.383 min −1 . It should be noted that NaBH 4 played a double role in the reduction of 4-NP presented here, i.e., in-situ reduction of AgCl to Ag nanoparticles and successive reduction of 4-NP over the resultant Ag@TA x -cellulose hydrogels. In such a way, the strategy of “catalysis along with reduction” provided a novel path for catalytic systems involving noble metal catalysts. Also, the above AgCl@TA x -cellulose hydrogels exhibited good catalytic activity for NaBH 4 -mediated reduction of various organic dyes following the procedure of “catalysis along with reduction”.

Biochemical Synthesis of Ag/AgCl Nanoparticles for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Removal of Colored Dyes

Xiyun Zhao,Jie Zhang,Binsong Wang,Amir Zada,Muhammad Humayun

Photocatalytic removal of organic pollution such as waste colored dyes was a promising technique for environment technique. However, effective photocatalysts were needed to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. Ag/AgCl was regarded as high performance catalyst for photocatalytic degradation. Ag/AgCl nanoparticles were biochemically prepared with metabolin of living fungi which was used as reductant and characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Ag/AgCl nanoparticle composites showed spherical aggregation shape with an average size of about 3–5 nm which is well inside the quantum regime. The UV-visible study showed that Ag/AgCl nanoparticles had strong visible light absorption and exhibited excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance. Photocatalytic results indicated that the obtained Ag/AgCl nanoparticles were suitable for photocatalytic removal of RhB dye under visible light irradiation. The excellent photocatalytic activities could be attributed to the quantum size nanoparticles and the Plasmon resonance of Ag/AgCl composites.

A Novel Ag@AgCl Nanoparticle Synthesized by Arctic Marine Bacterium: Characterization, Activity and Mechanism

Shuang Li,Hui Zhang,Bailin Cong,Peiqing He,Wenqi Liu,Shenghao Liu

An additive- and pollution-free method for the preparation of biogenic silver and silver chloride nanoparticles ([email protected]NPs) was developed from the bacteriaShewanellasp. Arc9-LZ, which was isolated from the deep sea of the Arctic Ocean. The optimal synthesizing conditions were explored, including light, pH, Ag+concentration and time. The nanoparticles were studied by means of ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometers (ICP-OES). The transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that the nanoparticles were spherical and well dispersed, with particle sizes less than 20.00 nm. With[email protected]nanoparticles, the kinetic rate constants for congo red (CR) and rhodamine B (RhB) dye degradation were 2.74 × 10−1min−1and 7.78 × 10−1min−1, respectively. The maximum decolourization efficiencies of CR and RhB were 93.36% and 99.52%, respectively.[email protected]nanoparticles also showed high antibacterial activities against the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrum indicated that the O-H, N-H and -COO- groups in the supernatant of Arc9-LZ might participate in the reduction, stabilization and capping of nanoparticles. We mapped the schematic diagram on possible mechanisms for synthesizing[email protected]NPs.Keywords:[email protected]nanoparticles;synthesis mechanisms;Shewanellasp.;dye reduction;antibacterial activity
