Synthesis and characterisation of AlB2 nanopowders by solid state reaction

Chunmei Jiang,Yongjun Ma,Fengqi Zhao,Lun Wei,Heng Zhang,Chonghua Pei

A simple and effective way for preparing AlB 2 nanopowders was developed using solid state reaction with a mixture of nanometre-sized powders of aluminium and amorphous boron. The optimum synthesis conditions and the structural characteristics of the products were carefully investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and an energy dispersive spectrometer. The best result was obtained at a synthesis temperature of 900°C for 2 h with a molar ratio of 1:1.8. The obtained AlB 2 nanopowders consisted of numerous anomalous spherical particles with the grain size ranging from 100 to 200 nm. Furthermore, differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that the combustion characteristics of the as-prepared AlB 2 nanopowders were better than that of the commercial AlB 2 powder under the same condition.

Anti-oxidative quartz/carbon-braided fiber reinforced ceramizable composites modified with B4C and AlB2: Mechanical robustness, phase evolution and anti-oxidation mechanism

Bo Xu,Fengyi Wang,Minxian Shi,Zhixiong Huang,Xueyuan Yang

Carbon fiber reinforced ceramizable phenolic resin matrix composites (C f /CPR) have been widely used in the field of thermal protection materials. However, the industrial application of the C f /CPR is restricted by its easy oxidation failure under high temperature condition. In this work, a novel antioxidative ceramizable composites modified with AlB 2 and B 4 C (C f -Q f /CPR) were prepared by using quartz fiber-coated carbon fiber (C f -Q f ) as reinforcements via co-weaving technique. The thermal stability, mechanical properties, interfacial phase evolution and anti-oxidation mechanism of the composites were investigated. The residue yield and the flexural strength of the composites after treatment at 1200°C for 15 min were 93.4 % and 62.4 MPa, increased by 5.4 % and 67.3 % compared with those of C f /CPR. Quartz fiber and ceramic protective layer showed synergistic effect to improve the oxidation resistance of carbon fiber and PyC, confirming good high temperature mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of as-received composites.

AlB2 nanosheets as energetic boosters: enhancement of energetic performance of AlB2 fuels

Ziting Wei,Wanjun Zhao,Nan Li,Wei Le,Zhigang liu,Qingjie Jiao

AlB 2 nanosheets containing nanoscale AlB 2 were obtained via a liquid-phase exfoliation method. • AlB 2 nanosheets/AP composite showed 2.53 times higher peak pressure than bulk AlB 2 /AP. • Enhanced output performance of AlB 2 nanosheets can be attributed to the two-dimensional structure and increased surface area. • AlB 2 nanosheets are a kind of promising high-energy fuel for energetic materials. AlB 2 has been a focused candidate for applying as a solid fuel in energetics. However, the limited energy release rate of AlB 2 fuel restricts its wider adoption. To address this limitation, we prepared AlB 2 nanosheets containing nanoscale AlB 2 by liquid-phase exfoliation to improve the energetic performance of AlB 2 fuel. The microstructure and exfoliation principle of fuels were characterized and investigated. The oxidation kinetics and corresponding oxidation process of the AlB 2 nanosheets were explored. The superiority of AlB 2 nanosheets in terms of combustion release rate was verified by using laser ignition experiments and combustion pressure tests. Additionally, the combustion mechanism of AlB 2 nanosheets was investigated through an analysis of combustion products. The research findings indicate that the peak pressure of the AlB 2 nanosheet/AP composite exhibits a significantly enhanced energy release capacity—2.53 times greater—compared to the bulk AlB 2 /AP composite. The pressure rise rate and burning rate of the former are 3.38 times and 1.46 times those of the latter, respectively, which can be attributed to the existence of two-dimensional AlB 2 and the larger surface area of the AlB 2 nanosheets. HTPFA-Coated AlB2 with Enhanced Combustion Performance as a High-Energy Fuel

Jiangfeng Wang,Wanjun Zhao,Chen Shen,Yapeng Ou,Qingjie Jiao

High-energy boron-based fuel aluminum-diboride (AlB2) has attracted much attention in the field of solid propellants. However, the low reactivity of AlB2hindered its further application. In this study, highly reactive AlB2@hydroxyl-terminated perfluoropolyether alcohol (AlB2@HTPFA) composites with a core–shell structure were prepared by coating AlB2with functionalized fluoropolymers by using a facile one-step in situ polymerization method. AlB2@HTPFA composites with varying polymer contents (0, 5, 10, and 15 wt%) were obtained. The in situ polymerization strategy enables precise control over the polymer coating thickness and interfacial interactions, which is critical for optimizing the reactivity and thermal stability of composites. The morphology and structure were characterized, and the microcore–shell structure of AlB2@HTPFA was obtained. Compared with raw AlB2, the combustion efficiency of coated fuel increased by 4.1%, 5.6%, and 7.5%, respectively, with varying polymer contents. Meanwhile, the reactivity of AlB2@HTPFA (5 wt%) was 0.65 MPa/s, which is ~1.5 times that of AlB2. Additionally, the ignition and combustion characteristics of AlB2@HTPFA were investigated by laser ignition experiments with potassium perchlorate (KP) as an oxidant. The results revealed that AlB2@HTPFA/KP composites showed a greatly reduced combustion duration compared to uncoated AlB2. The ignition and combustion enhancement mechanism of AlB2@HTPFA was proposed. During the ignition process, the existence of HTPFA can result in a pre-ignition reaction, thus raising its reaction activity. This work provided a promising candidate for high-energy fuel that can be used in energetic materials.

Facile Synthesis of Tungsten Diboride (WB2-191) in Molten Salt and Its Hydrogen Evolution Performance in Acidic and Alkaline Media

Xiyan Liu,Manxin Cao,Jun Wen,Yu Gong

The AlB2-type WB2-191 with only graphene-like flat boron layers is deemed to be an ideal electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. However, such investigation is severely hindered by the lack of facile synthesis methods for this type of WB2-191. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of AlB2-type WB2-191 by a one-step molten salt method via the reaction of WCl6 and NaBH4 in LiCl–KCl molten salt at 800 °C under atmospheric pressure. The as-synthesized WB2-191 presents a nanosheet structure, as demonstrated by the scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy results with a large BET surface area of 63 m2/g. Such WB2-191 nanosheets exhibit remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction activity, delivering low overpotentials of 121 in 0.5 H2SO4 and 147 mV in 1.0 M KOH to drive 10 mA/cm2, which is superior to any previously reported binary tungsten borides. Furthermore, an outstanding stability was shown over 70 h of potentiostatic operations in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes.

The Synthesis and Mechanism of AlB2-KAlF4 Composites Prepared by Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis Method

Yu Li,Pan Yang,Weijun Tian

Using Al and KBF 4 as raw materials, AlB 2 -KAlF 4 composites were synthesized by self-propagating high temperature synthesis method. The phase composition and morphology of the composites were investigated and its mechanism was revealed. The results show that the phases of the combustion synthesized product of the Al-KBF 4 system are AlB 2 and KAlF 4 , in which AlB 2 is a hexagonal cylinder, and KAlF 4 has two morphologies: a tetragonal cylinder and a hollow needle-shaped leaf particle. The combustion synthesis reaction of the Al-KBF 4 system begins with the successive melting of KBF 4 and Al. With the increase of temperature, KBF 4 decomposes to form liquid phase KF and gas phase BF 3 . Subsequently, the gas phase BF 3 reacts with the liquid phase Al to form B and AlF 3 , then, AlF 3 reacts with KF to produce KAlF 4 . Finally, the reduced B reacts with the remaining Al to produce AlB 2 .
